The experimental studies done at high temperature and high pressure find that increased temperature can lead to dramatic velocity and strength reductions of most of rocks at high confining pressure[1,2]. What causes this phenomenon? Is it due to dehydrati…  相似文献

The Zuccale fault is a regional, low-angle, normal fault, exposed on the Isle of Elba in central Italy that accommodated a total shear displacement of 6–8 km. The fault zone structure and fault rocks formed at <8 km crustal depth. The present-day fault structure is the final product of several deformation processes superposed during the fault history. In this study, we report results from a series of rotary shear experiments performed on 1-mm thick powdered gouges made from several fault rock types obtained from the Zuccale fault. The tests were done under conditions ranging from room temperature to in situ conditions (i.e., at temperatures up to 300 °C, applied normal stresses up to 150 MPa, and fluid-saturated.) The ratio of fluid pressure to normal stress was held constant at either λ = 0.4 or λ = 0.8 to simulate an overpressurized fault. The samples were sheared at a constant sliding velocity of 10 μm/s for at least 5 mm, after which a velocity-stepping sequence from 1 to 300 μm/s was started to determine the velocity dependence of friction. This can be represented by the rate-and-state parameter (a–b), which was determined by an inversion of the data to the rate-and-state equations. Friction of the various fault rocks varies between 0.3 and 0.8, similar to values obtained in previous studies, and decreases with increasing phyllosilicate content. Friction decreases mildly with temperature, whereas normal stress and fluid pressure do not affect friction values systematically. All samples exhibited velocity strengthening, conditionally stable behavior under room temperature conditions and (ab) increased with increasing sliding velocity. In contrast, velocity weakening, accompanied by stick–slips, was observed for the strongest samples at 300 °C and sliding velocities below 10 μm/s. An increase in fluid pressure under these conditions led to a further reduction in (a–b) for all samples, so that they exhibited unstable, stick–slip behavior at low sliding velocity. The results suggest that phyllosilicate-bearing fault rocks can deform by stable, aseismic creep at low, resolved shear stress and low shear rate conditions. An increase in fluid pressure or loading of stronger portions could lead to a runaway instability. The runaway instability might be limited in size because of (1) the fault heterogeneity, (2) the observed strengthening at higher sliding velocities, and (3) a co-seismic drop in pore-fluid pressure.  相似文献

In this paper, we estimated the effective size of ice crystals in cirrus clouds using fall velocity derived from LiDAR (light detection and ranging) measurements at Chung-Li (24.58°N, 121.1°E), Taiwan. Nine shapes of the ice crystals, viz. hexagonal plates, hexagonal columns, rimed long columns, crystals with sector-like branches, broad-branched crystals, stellar crystal with broad arms, side planes, bullet rosettes and assemblages of planar poly-crystals of specific dimensions have been analyzed. The results show that the lidar derived most probable mean effective size of ice crystals is 340±180 μm with a dominant size range of 200–300 μm. The lidar derived mean effective size of cirrus crystals are parameterized in terms of cloud mid-height temperature as well as optical depth. The discussed method will be useful to study the most probable effective size distribution of ice crystals in cirrus cloud.  相似文献

Equivalent dose (De) values were measured by using medium aliquots of different grain size quartz fractions of five lakeshore sediments from the arid region of north China. There are two different relationships between De values and grain sizes of these five samples. The first relationship is that the De values obtained from various grain sizes are in agreement within 1 delta errors. The second relationship is that De values are similar to each other for fractions between 125 and 300 μm, while the De value of the 63–90 μm fraction is 40~55% smaller than others. For example, the De values obtained for sample #3 are 20.15 ± 1.19 Gy, 19.80 ± 0.83 Gy and 20.93 ± 1.06 Gy for fractions of 90–125, 125–150 and 250–300 μm respectively, but are 10.79 ± 0.84 Gy for the 63–90 μm fraction. The second relationship can't be interpreted by previous studies of both dosimetry and heterogeneous bleaching. It is deduced for sample #2, #3 and #6 that fine particles (<90 μm) intruded after the dominant sedimentation. Comparison of OSL ages from different grain size fractions of sample #2 with a radiocarbon age from the same lithologic layer supports that fractions coarser than 125 μm yield more reliable burial ages, while the fraction finer than 90 μm yields underestimated ages for some lakeshore sediments from this arid region.  相似文献

We have determined the concentrations and isotopic composition of helium in oceanic basaltic glass both by melting and by crushing in vacuo. A significant fraction of the helium is released by crushing, confirming that it resides within the vesicles. Comparison of volume percent vesicles to the fraction of helium contained in the vesicles gives qualitative agreement with experimental gas-melt partitioning studies. Measured concentrations are therefore, a function of original helium content, magmatic history, vesicle size and quantity, and grain size analyzed. Helium released by crushing is isotopically indistinguishable from that contained in the glass. Diffusion rates for helium in basaltic glass (in the temperature range 125–400°C) determined using the method of stepwise heating, yielded an activation energy of 19.9 ± 1 kcal/mole andlnD0 = ?2.7 ± 0.6 (cgs units). Extrapolation of these results to ocean floor temperatures (0°C) gives a diffusivity of 1.0 ± 0.6 × 10?17 cm2/s, indicating that diffusion is an insignificant mechanism for helium loss from fresh basaltic glasses. The3He/4He ratios are remarkably constant (at 1.10 ± 0.03 × 10?5) for samples from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (FAMOUS area and 23°N), the Juan de Fuca Ridge, the Galapagos spreading center, the Mid-Cayman Rise, and the Central Indian Ocean Ridge. This result is interpreted in terms of similar geochemical histories within the source regions for these samples.  相似文献

Hysteresis parameters Hcr, Hc, Jrs, Js, and their ratios Hcr/Hc, Jrs/Js have been measured for a large number of accurately prepared grain size fractions of magnetite in the range between 5 and 150 μm. For several grain size fractions three different concentrations of magnetite are used: 100, 0.1, and 0.002 vol.%. Most of the measurements were repeated after annealing the specimens to 600°C. For some specimens in the pseudo-single (PSD) and multidomain (MD) range Hc and Hcr have been measured as functions of temperature. Plots of the results from Hc, Hcr/Hc and Jrs/Js versus the grain size reveal curves with a convex and a concave part. Concentration and annealing affects the values of the hysteresis parameters, especially for grains coarser than 25 μm but the shape of the curves remains the same. The inflection point from convex to concave for all curves occurs at 25 μm and it appears to be independent of concentration and annealing. It is therefore proposed to define the transition from PSD to MD as the inflection point of these curves.  相似文献

An apparatus designed to determine the complex shear modulus of rock samples by forced torsion oscillations at high temperature and in the seismic frequency band 0.003–30 Hz is briefly described. Measurements were performed on natural dunite from Åheim (Norway) up to 1400°C and on polycrystalline forsterite up to 1500°C at 1 atm pressure. The two materials were chosen to study, by comparison, the effect of melt on the elasticity and anelasticity of mantle rocks.Between 1000 and 1200°C the absolute values of the shear modulus G are almost equal for both materials. Above 1200°C G for natural dunite decreases progressively with temperature and at 1400°C and 1 Hz reaches 13 of its value at 1100°C. In contrast, G of pure forsterite depends little on temperature. For petrological reasons, supported by simultaneous measurements of the electric resistivity, there is strong evidence that the decrease of G in dunite above 1200°C is due to melt from the lower melting components of the dunite. Based on different models estimates of the melt fraction are made.At high temperature, in both materials Q?1 is characterized by a monotonic decrease with frequency according to ω?α, with α ≈ 0.25. An apparent activation energy of 38±5 kcal mol?1 for forsterite and 48±8 kcal mol?1 for dunite was found with no significant change in the regime of partial melting. From this it is concluded that Q?1, even at partial melting, is dominated by solid state high temperature background absorption. There is no indication from these experiments for a constant-Q-band at low seismic frequencies or an increase of Q proportional to frequency as suggested by some seismologists. The present results are in good qualitative agreement with those for Young's modulus obtained previously by strain retardation experiments.  相似文献

The major Proterozoic igneous intrusions in the Swedish sector of the Baltic Shield are the Ragunda complex (1293 m.y., palaeomagnetic pole 165°E, 54°N) and the Nordingrågabbro-granite-anorthosite complex (1385 ± 30 m.y.). The latter body has been partially remagnetised by later post-Jotnian dolerites (1254 m.y.), and sites influenced by the dolerites have a stable magnetisation with a mean direction D = 45°, I = ?39°, (α95 = 4.3°). Elsewhere, the gabbro-anorthosite facies have a magnetisation of dual polarity predating the dolerite and recoverable at various stages of thermal and/or a.f. cleaning with a mean of D = 48°, I = 37° (α95 = 5.3°); medium and high coercivity remanence resides in large magnetite grains and fine, predominantly hematite, rods in feldspar megacrysts. The Nordingrårapakivi granite yields a mean, also including dual polarities, of D = 221°, I = ?25° (α95 = 13°), and the Gävle granite yields a mean of D = 26°, I = 17° (α95 = 13°).New data define the a.p.w. path for the Baltic Shield after final uplift and cooling of the ca. 1800 m.y. Svecofennian mobile belt and prior to intrusion of the post-Jotnian dolerites at 1250 m.y.; this (ca. 1500–1200 m.y.) path defines a double loop similar in size and shape to the contemporaneous path for the Laurentian Shield and the paths can be superimposed to define relative positions of the shields. They were in juxtaposition prior to 1200 m.y. with the optimum reconstruction obtained by rotation of approximately 64° about a Euler pole at 1°E, 36°N. Pre-1500 m.y. palaeomagnetic data are also shown to fit this same unique reconstruction. The main geological correlations are an alignment of the Lower/Middle Proterozoic major strike-slip zones, the structural trends within the pre-1700 m.y. mobile belts, and the Grenville and Sveconorwegian (ca. 1100 m.y.) mobile belts. The anorogenic magmatism characteristic of Proterozoic times became gradually more restricted to one active margin of the continental reconstruction as temperature gradients decreased and the crust consolidated. All of these Proterozoic tectonic/magmatic trends are parallel to the long axis of the continental reconstruction.  相似文献

Quartz and K-feldspar were grown and/or equilibrated in a common fluid at 600°C, and were analyzed mass-spectrometrically as pairs. Various errors that could affect quartz-feldspar oxygen isotope temperature calibrations that are derived from quartz-solution and feldspar-solution data of different studies, are thereby avoided. Using a range of starting materials, we obtained103 lnα(quartz-K-feldspar) = 1.8 ± 0.15, a value in reasonable agreement with geological data.  相似文献

Ultrasonic data for the velocities of SiO2-stishovite have been determined as a function of pressure to 10 kbar at room temperature for polycrystalline specimens hot-pressed at pressures P = 120kbar and temperatures T = 900°C. These cylindrical specimens are 2 mm in diameter and 0.9–1.4 mm long and have a grain size less than 10 μm. Compressional and shear wave velocities were measured both parallel and perpendicular to the axis of pressing and were found to be isotropic at 10 kbar with νp = 11.0 ± 0.2km/sec andνs = 6.9 ± 0.3km/sec; this shear velocit is substantially higher than that of Mizutani et al. (1972) perhaps due to the presence of crack orientations in their specimen which affected νs but not νp. The Murnaghan P-V trajectories calculated from the ultrasonic data [bulk modulus Ks = 2.5 ± 0.3Mbar and assuming (?Ks/?P)T = 6 ± 2] are consistent with recent hydrostatic compression data and with the shock wave compression data above 600 kbar. The combined evidence from the data of the ultrasonic and hydrostatic compression techniques suggests that the most probable value of the bulk modulus of stishovite at zero pressure is close to the upper limit of the uncertainty of our ultrasonically determined value, K0 = 2.7?2.8Mbar. Elasticity data for rutile-type oxides are not compatible with normal Ks-V0 systematics perhaps due to the neglect of non-central forces in the lattice model. These new stishovite data would make it impossible to satisfy the elasticity-density data of the lower mantle using an oxide mixture with either olivine or pyroxene stoichiometry.  相似文献

The palaeomagnetism of Middle Triassic (224 ± 5 m.y.) igneous rocks from the Ischigualasto-Ischichuca Basin (67°40′W, 30°20′S) was investigated through 86 oriented hand samples from 11 sites. At least one reversal of the geomagnetic field has been found in these rocks. Nine sites yield a palaeomagnetic pole at 239°E, 79°S (α95 = 15°, k = 13).The K-Ar age determinations of five igneous units of the Puesto Viejo Formation give a mean age of 232 ± 4 m.y. (Early Triassic). The palaeomagnetism of six igneous units of the Puesto Viejo Formation (68°W, 35°S) was investigated through 60 oriented samples. These units, two reversed relative to the present magnetic field of the Earth and four normal, yield a pole at 236°E, 76°S (α95 = 18°, k = 14).Data from the Puesto Viejo Formation indicate, for the first time on the basis of palaeomagnetic and radiometric data, that the Illawarra Zone, which defines the end of the Kiaman Magnetic Interval, extends at least down to 232 ± 4 m.y. within the Early Triassic. The palaeomagnetic poles for the igneous rocks of the Ischigualasto-Ischichuca Basin and Puesto Viejo Formation form an “age group” with the South American Triassic palaeomagnetic poles (mean pole position: 239°E, 77°S; α95 = 6.6°, k = 190). The Middle and Upper Permian, Triassic and Middle Jurassic palaeomagnetic poles for South America would define a “time group” reflecting a quasi-static interval (mean pole position: 232°E, 81°S; α95 = 4°, k = 131).  相似文献

In the western part of the Gardar Igneous Province of southern Greenland, lamprophyre dykes intruded at ca. 1276-1254 m.y. RbSr biotite ages yield a palaeomagnetic pole at 206.5°E,3°N (nine sites, dψ = 5.1°, dχ = 10.1°) Slightly younger dolerite dykes with RbSr biotite ages in the range 1278-1263 m.y. give a pole at 201.5°E,8.5°N (24 sites, dψ = 4.7°, dχ = 9.4°), and the syeno-gabbro ring dyke of the Kûngnât complex (RbSr isochron age 1245 ± 17 m.y.) cutting both of these dykes swarms, gives a pole at 198.5°E, 3.5°N (four sites, dψ = 2.3°,dχ = 4.4°). All these rock units have the same polarity and the poles are identical to those from Mackenzie and related igneous rocks of North America (1280-1220 m.y.) after closure of the Davis Strait; they confirm that this part of the Gardar Province is a lateral extension of the Mackenzie igneous episode within the Laurentian craton. In the Tugtutôq region of the eastern part of the Gardar Province 47 NNE-trending dykes of various petrologic types, and intruded between 1175 ± 9 and 1168 ± 37 m.y. (RbSr isochron ages) yield a palaeomagnetic pole at 223.9° E, 36.4°N (dψ = 4.1°, dχ = 6.1°). Fifteen other dykes in this swarm were intruded during a transitional phase of the magnetic field which, however, does not appear to have achieved a complete reversal over a period of several millions of years. The majority of dykes studied are highly stable to AF and thermal demagnetisation and contain single high blocking temperature components with single Curie points in the range 380–560°C.Palaeomagnetic poles from the Gardar Province between ca. 1330 and 1160 m.y. in age define the earlier part of the Great Logan apparent polar-wander loop; they correlate closely with contemporaneous North American results and confirm the coherence of the Laurentian craton in Upper Proterozoic times.  相似文献

Increasing evidence from fission track studies in Sweden indicate that large parts of the Fennoscandian Shield have been affected by a large-scale thermotectonic event in the Palaeozoic. In this study the results of 17 apatite fission track analyses from central Sweden are presented collected along three NW–SE transects trending from the Bothnian Sea to the Caledonides. On the Bothnian coast samples have been collected directly from the Sub-Cambrian Peneplain. The sedimentary cover protecting this surface until recently is responsible for the thermal increase detected through apatite fission track (FT) thermochronology. The apatite FT ages range between 516 ± 46 Ma (±1σ) on the Bothnian coast around sea level to 191 ± 11 Ma in the Caledonides (~500–1500 m.a.s.l.). The mean track lengths vary from 11.3 ± 2.2 μm (±1σ) in the east to 14.2 ± 2.8 μm in the west, indicating a longer stay in the PAZ in the east, versus a continuous cooling pattern in the west. This pattern in combination with other geological constraints indicates that the crystalline basement rocks near the Caledonian deformation front in the west experienced higher temperatures after the formation of the Sub-Cambrian Peneplain followed by denudation, compared with the basement rocks in the east near the Bothnian coast. The apatite FT data near the Caledonian deformation front indicates prevailing temperatures of more than 110 ± 10 °C prior to the Mid Palaeozoic, causing a resetting of the apatite fission track clock. The temperatures were progressively lower away from the deformation front. Apatite fission track analysis of samples collected from the Sub-Cambrian Peneplain along the Bothnian coast indicate maximum temperatures of 90 ± 15 °C during Late Silurian–Early Devonian time. This heating event is argued to be the result of burial beneath a developing foreland basin in front of the Caledonian orogeny. Assuming a geothermal gradient of 20 °C/km, this temperature increase can be converted to a total burial of the samples. The resulting geometry of this basin can be described as an asymmetrical basin at least 3.5 km deep in the vicinity of the Caledonian deformation front decreasing to about 2.5 km on the Bothnian coast, continuing further onto Finland. The width of this basin was in thus in the order of 600 km. Whether this was formed completely synorogenic or partly synorogenic, broadening after cessation of the orogeny, could not be revealed. The Late Palaeozoic and Mesozoic thermal evolution of this area is related to the extensional tectonics in the North Atlantic Domain.  相似文献

The thermal expansion of stishovite has been determined by an X-ray camera technique in a temperature range of 18 – 600°C at an atmospheric pressure. The thermal-expansion coefficients along the crystallographic a- and c-axes at 300 K are αa = (6.0 ± 0.6) · 10?6K?1 and αc = (1.4 ± 0.5) · 10?6K?1, respectively. The volume coefficient at 300 K is αν = (13.5 ± 0.6) · 10?6K?1.  相似文献

Very fine samples from the mineralized zones of the Jacupiranga complex at the Cajati mine were selected for crystallographic identification of Ti-magnesioferrite (TMf) nanostructures embedded in titanomagnetite (TM) using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A magnetic concentrate obtained of pyroxenite samples (sites 4 to 7) was reduced and divided into fractions of distinct range sizes: 26±2 μm, 19±1 μm, 13±1 μm, 9±1 μm, 6±1 μm and 6-0.1 μm. The mineralized samples of carbonatite and pyroxenite were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmitted and reflected light microscope, and scanning electron microscope with multielemental analysis. The finest magnetic concentrate sample (MC6) was analyzed under high-resolution transmitted electron microscopy (TEM) and high angle annular dark field and Raman spectroscopy. Magnetic properties were measured for the distinct granulometric fractions, showing drastic changes when grain sizes go beyond the frontier from micro to nanometer sizes. Frequency-dependent magnetic susceptibility percentage (÷fd%) report higher values (10.2%) for the finer fractions (6±1 μm and 6-0.1 μm) attributed to dominant fractions of superparamagnetic particles. Nanometer and < 6 μm grain size TMf in TM particles require a magnetic field up to 249 mT to reach saturation during the isothermal remanent magnetization experiment. Coercivity and remanent magnetization of these samples increase when the particle size decreases, probably due to parallel coupling effects. Magnetic susceptibility versus temperature experiments were conducted two times on the same (< 35 nm) sample, showing that the repetition during the second heating is probably due to the formation of new TMf nanoparticles and growth of those already present during the first heating process.  相似文献

In this study we test the potential of the elevated temperature infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) signals for dating Romanian loess. The recently developed post-IR IRSL protocol is applied to Romanian loess using polymineral fine grains extracted from the loess-palaeosol sequence at Mircea Vodă (SE Romania). This approach is aimed at obtaining an additional age control to examine the age discrepancy obtained from previous optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) studies using different grain-sizes of quartz (4–11 μm and 63–90 μm).Two preheat post-IR IR stimulation temperature combinations were used, 250–225 °C and 325–300 °C, respectively. The signals obtained are documented in terms of dose response curve, laboratory tests and fading. Although both post-IR IRSL signals exhibit small fading rates, dose response characteristics indicate that these rates may be laboratory artefacts. The post-IR IRSL signal stimulated at 300 °C is observed to suffer from dose dependent initial sensitivity changes as both natural and regenerated signals are observed to lie above the saturation level of the dose response curve. Uncorrected age results obtained using both post-IR IRSL signals are in general agreement with previously reported silt-sized quartz OSL ages for samples collected from the uppermost loess unit L1. For older material, the post-IR IRSL signal stimulated at 225 °C is considered to provide reliable age results, in agreement with independent age control available for this sequence.  相似文献

The applicability of both quartz and feldspar luminescence dating was tested on twenty-five samples from a marine succession now forming a coastal cliff at Oga Peninsula, Honshu Island, Japan. The quartz optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) signal shows thermal instability and linear modulated (LM)-OSL analysis revealed the dominance of a slow component. When compared with independent age control provided by two marker tephras, the quartz OSL ages grossly underestimate the depositional age. In contrast, potassium (K)-rich feldspar is a suitable dosimeter when measured using post-IR infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) at 225 °C (pIRIR225). Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses on the feldspar extracts revealed that the grains are amorphous with small crystalline inclusions; using standard internal dose rate parameters, this would result in a too large dose rate. Dose rates were calculated using the observed grain size of 40 ± 20 μm with an assumed K concentration of 12.5 ± 0.5%. The fading corrected pIRIR225 ages agree well with independent age control, and the sediments of the Katanishi Formation were deposited between 82 ± 6 and 170 ± 16 ka. This study demonstrates that pIRIR dating of feldspar is a powerful chronological tool for the dating of sediments of volcanic origin.  相似文献

Daihai Lake is one of the largest lakes in the mid-latitude of northern China. Previous environmental change investigations using the sediments from the lake have been mainly focused on the last 13 ka. In 2006, we drilled an 80-m borehole on the southwest coast of the lake. Here we report the results of initial optical dating of the upper 22-m sediments from the core. Most of the samples allow separation of the 4–11 μm fine-grained and 45–63 μm medium-grained quartz, both of which were used for equivalent dose (De) determination. Dose recovery test experiments with the single-aliquot regeneration-dose (SAR) protocol indicate that a preheat at 240 °C for 10 s combined with a cut-heat of 240 °C is suitable for these samples. The De values show marked discrepancy between the two grain size fractions with the fine-grained quartz yielding up to over 50% higher De values than the medium ones for some samples. We consider the OSL ages for the samples from upper ~10 m to be overestimated. The main cause of the overestimation is attributed to the incomplete bleaching of the sediment grains at deposition. The OSL ages for the lower part of the sequence are considered to be reasonable age estimates which provide useful temporal constrains on the deposition of the sediments for the period of 20–40 ka.

Extensive physical and biological measurements were made of the surface sediments within the shallow, semi-urbanised Coombabah Lake in southern Moreton Bay, Australia. Sediment bulk parameters (C/N ratios, δ13C and δ15N) and fatty acid biomarkers were used to determine distributions and sources of organic matter in the intertidal sediments. The determination of organic matter sources within coastal and estuarine settings is important in understanding the roles of organic matter as energy and nutrient sources. Spatial variability of biomarker values within the sediments were interpreted by thematic maps employing the Krigging algorithm. Grain size analysis indicated the lake was dominated by mud (<63 μm) in the southern (landward) and sand (>63 μm) in the northern (seaward) lake regions, respectively. Surface sediment organic C and N values ranged from 0.12% to 1.76% and 0.01% to 0.12% dry weight, respectively, and C/N ratios averaged 16.3±3.19%. Sedimentary δ13C values ranged from −26.1‰ to −20.9‰, with an average value of −23.9±1.0‰. Sedimentary δ15N values ranged from +1.7‰ to +4.8‰, with an average value of +2.8±0.8‰. Bulk sediment parameters suggested that sedimentary organic matter is provided predominantly by allochthonous sources in the form of fringing mangroves. Thirty-nine individual fatty acids were identified using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The mean contributions of long chain fatty acids (LCFAs), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), saturated fatty acids (SAFAs) and bacterial fatty acids (BAFAs) were, respectively, 13.9±11.4%, 7.6±4.1%, 53.6±8.6% and 18.2±4.6% of the identified fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs), with BAFAs occurring in all sampled sediments. Fatty acid compositions varied throughout lake sediments, which indicated spatial differences in autochthonous and allochthonous organic matter sources, including terrestrial and planktonic (i.e. zooplankton, diatoms and other algal species) sources. The contribution of organic matter from shoreline mangroves was confirmed by the presence of LCFAs and 18:2ω6 and 18:3ω3, which are markers for mangroves in this ecosystem. BAFAs were identified in increased proportions in sediments adjacent to urban developments and dominated by mud. Grain size was identified as a dominant factor in the fatty acid compositions and contributing values to FAME pool. Spatial patterns of C/N ratios, δ13C and δ15N values, and fatty acid biomarker contributions illustrated that there is a greater contribution of autochthonous and labile organic matter to the sedimentary organic matter pool in the northern (marine entrance) sediments compared to the more allochthonous sourced organic matter of the southern region of the lake. This study details the distribution and sources of organic matter within Coombabah Lake and illustrates the usefulness of a multiple biomarker approach in discriminating organic matter sources within estuarine environments.  相似文献
