The measured drag characteristics of a variety of cable fairings are reviewed and compared with those of bare cables. The effect of cable inclination angle has been studied and an empirical rule developed for dealing with faired cables, the hydrodynamic properties of which are shown to depend significantly on the section shape of the fairing.Non-dimensional cable functions are tabulated for both bare and faired cable profiles and applied to show how the addition of fairings can improve the towing performance of a given system.Simple formulae are developed for calculating faired cable system properties and for assessing the effect of fish drag on the depression angle.  相似文献

The hydrodynamic forces and moments that act on a towed fish are described and related to fundamental static and dynamic towing characteristics. It is shown that, when the fin height is reduced almost to the point giving neutral stability in pitch, the fish maintains almost constant pitch attitude while it is forced to heave or surge by ship motion transmitted down the cable.Wind tunnel tests provide the necessary hydrodynamic data for a computer simulation in two dimensions of the Bath Mk 3 sonar fish towed on faired cable. The results show that the magnitude of the pitch attitude variations of the fish can be greatly reduced by decreasing the fin size, with further reduction being possible by correctly locating the pointwhere the cable is attached to the fish. It is also shown that decreasing the fin size reduces the magnitude of the tension variations in the cable, thereby lowering the probability that the cable will go slack.These results generalise to a large class of towed systems using either or bare cable, and a formula is included by which the magnitude of the ship-inducing pitching motion of a fish can be estimated, given the necessary hydrodynamic data.Possible difficulties associated with towing a low stability fish are considered and a method is included for assessing the minimum stability likely to be necessary to achieved satisfactory towing behaviour.  相似文献

Digital computer simulation in two dimensions of a neutrally-stable fish towed on a faired cable has been used to investigate the response of the fish to disturbances in the ship motion. The numerical methods used are described broadly, excluding mathematical detail, and selected results are presented which indicate typical behaviour of the system.The free oscillations of the fish-cable system and its response to deterministic and random ship disturbances are investigated. This reveals the dynamic principles governing the motion and allows the formulation of simple rules to give a first approximation to the magnitude of the fish response. It is shown that, provided resonances of the ship and fish-cable system do not coincide, the overall amplitude of motion of the fish is proportional to the sine of the angle made by the top of the cable with the horizontal. Formulae are given for calculating approximately the resonant frequencies of the towed system.  相似文献

The lateral motions of roll, yaw and sway of a heavy towed fish are investigated. Perturbation lateral ship motion propagates down the cable as a damped wave and non-dimensional tables are provided that allow the attenuation of the motion to be estimated. The tables are supplemented by a short BASIC computer program for calculations outside the tabular range.Three-dimensional dynamic simulation of the Bath Mk 3 Sonar Fish is used to establish the effects of fish weight, towstaff length and vertical fin size on the amplitude of rolling and yawing motion. It is shown that very careful adjustment of fin size can reduce the amplitude of yawing motion by a factor of about 3. It is also shown that attaching the cable to the fish with a towstaff free to pivot only in pitch improves the towing properties of the fish and reduces the amplitude of rolling motion.  相似文献

Experimental studies of the transverse motions induced in a long flexible cable by axial flows have been conducted in a large blowdown water channel. A cable with a diameter of 1.59 cm and a length of 9 m was employed. Experiments were conducted over a fluid velocity range of 4.6-9.1 m/s. Both free and fixed downstream terminations of the cable were utilized, the former simulating a towed cable and the latter a mooring cable. Measurements of the drag coefficient of the cable with the free end were also made. These results were compared with those obtained previously for a flexible cylinder with a smooth exterior surface, and the following conclusions were drawn. 1) The amplitudes of the flow-induced transverse motions in a flexible cable or cylinder with a free downstream end in general decrease with increasing distance from this end, but they exhibit weak dependence on flow velocity and surface roughness near this end. 2) The amplitudes of the flow-induced motions are in general smaller when the cable is fixed at both ends than when the downstream end is free. 3) The drag coefficient of the flexible cylinder or cable increases with increasing surface roughness.  相似文献

The results of dynamic and steady-state cable simulations are used to show that a towed system can behave in either of two different ways on entering a turn. In a large radius turn the system maintains its straight-tow equilibrium configuration but in a slightly perturbed form. In a turn of small radius the system effectively collapses resulting in a large increase of fish depth and cable tension. A formula is included by which the approximate minimum radius of turn that does not precipitate collapse can be quickly calculated.Non-dimensional tables are presented giving details of the equilibrium configuration adopted by the cable when the ship maintains a circular course.Graphs are presented from which the time constants for the decay of lateral and longitudinal disturbances of 2-D cable profiles can be easily calculated. These can be used to estimate the time taken for a towed system to return to equilibrium following a manoeuvre.The derivation of the equations for the steady-state configurations and the time constants are included in appendices.  相似文献

The use of the side-scan sonar SAR brings to light a new problem for the IFREMER teams in charge of operations: how to master the half-turn manoeuvre of the ship, cable and fish as a whole in order to cover the entire maritime area under study, the mesh being in this case greatly reduced (900 m).Having defined the criteria necessary for manoeuvring under optimal conditions, a mathematical model for simulating cable dynamics—the only method adapted to this kind of study—was introduced in order to determine typical behaviour patterns of half-turn manoeuvres for the various immersions envisaged (from 2000 to 6000 m).  相似文献

The analysis of the failure mechanism of an undersea telecommunication repeater has pointed to the corrosion-accelerating electric current generated by the Hall effect. The interaction between the earth's magnetic field and the moving ionic sea water of the Gulf Stream produced an electric potential on the outer conductor of the coaxial cable. With an outer-conductor fracture there was a net unbalance of induced circulating electrical current in each repeater section. This paper considers the velocity profile of the Gulf Stream across the cable route, measured Hall potentials on other cable systems, the interfacial resistance of a repeater housing in sea water, and the continuity of the cable outer conductor to show that the necessary conditions for corrosion acceleration were indeed satisfied.  相似文献

The polysubstrate monooxygenase system has been shown to be highly responsive to chemical pollution. The present study summarizes the enzyme based biomonitoring of the waste waters released by a pulp mill producing unbleached pulp and paperboard. Cytochrome P4501A enzyme activities of feral and caged fish, as well as cultures of fish hepatocytes, were tested. The 7-ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity was clearly induced in fish hepatocytes exposed to biotreated unbleached pulp mill effluent fractions in vitro. The effluent increased EROD activities also in feral perch, compared with controls. Caging experiments showed similar effects to those seen in feral fish: however, the maximal induction coefficients observed were higher. Unbleached effluents contain compounds that are able to affect the P4501A activities in fish.  相似文献

The suction anchor has been widely used in taut or semi-taut mooring systems as an effective and economical solution to anchoring problems. To ensure high reliability, the profile of the mooring cable connecting the fairlead and the pad-eye must be accurately designed. However, previous studies have rarely considered the effect of cable slippage in soil on the mooring behavior, or embedded cables have been studied with an assumed tension at the seabed. This paper, by treating the cable suspended in water and the cable embedded in soil as a single cable, presents a two-dimensional (2D) static model and a three-dimensional (3D) quasi-static model for the cable during pretensioning and in service, respectively. The two models take into account the comprehensive effects of ocean currents, soil resistance and cable elasticity, all of which are critical for the design of a mooring system. Three examples are analyzed using the models and some useful conclusions are drawn.  相似文献

Comprehensive wind tunnel measurements have been made of the drag coefficients of both the body and the faired cable of a towed system. The drag data has been embodied in theoretical calculations of the depth attained in tow, at speed up to 3 m s−1 (6 knots) with scopes up to 135 m (440 ft). The agreement with sea trial observations is excellent.The work has highlighted the importance of accounting for the variation of faired cable drag with cable angle and has shown that the drag increments due to gaps and misalignments between individual fairing elements cannot be ignored.Methods are derived for estimating these effects for application to other faired cable towed systems.  相似文献

This paper analyses nonlinear dynamics of cable towed body system. The cable has been modeled and analyzed using a new nodal position finite element method, which calculates the position of the cable directly instead of the displacement by the existing finite element method. The newly derived nodal position finite element method eliminates the need of decoupling the rigid body motion from the total motion, where numerical errors arise in the existing nonlinear finite element method, and the limitation of small rotation in each time step in the existing nonlinear finite element method. The towed body is modeled as a rigid body with six degrees of freedom while the tow ship motion is treated as a moving boundary to the system. A special procedure has been developed to couple the cable element with the towed body. The current approach can be used as design tool for achieving improved directional stability, maneuverability, safety and control characteristics with the cable towed body. The analysis results show the elegance and robustness of the proposed approach by comparing with the sea trial data.  相似文献

A numerical solution and computer program developed to analyse undersea flexible cable problems is presented. The cable is subject to hydrodynamic loads from a surrounding fluid medium. The object is to determine the cable profile and tensile forces developed. The cable equations and boundary conditions result in a classical two-point boundary value problem. An iteration ‘shooting method’ is used for solution. The program has been written to analyse a class of towing and anchoring problems. Our goal was to study the involvement of cytochrome P450 genes in estrogen metabolism and the extent to which the potentially carcinogenic 4-hydroxyestradiol metabolite is formed by channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus; CC). Estradiol metabolism and ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity were assessed in several tissues from fish collected from three variably contaminated sites in the Mississippi River Delta, from laboratory control fish, and from fish exposed to 20 mg/kg benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) i.p. for 4 days. Liver EROD activity was induced by BaP, but Delta fish EROD activities were not statistically higher than activities in control fish. Gill microsomal EROD activity was also induced by BaP, but activities were 8- to 77-fold lower than those from liver. The predominant estrogen metabolites formed by CC liver, gill and gonad microsomes were 2-hydroxyestradiol and estrone as detected by GC/MS. Liver and gill 2-hydroxyestradiol formation was induced in BaP-dosed fish. The trends in hydroxyestradiol formation in field collected fish were more variable. In all fish liver microsomes there was more 2- compared to 4-hydroxyestradiol formed. However, BaP-treatment increased the 4:2 hydroxyestradiol ratio from 0.04 in control fish to 0.2 in BaP-exposed fish, suggesting that BaP induces the formation of the potentially genotoxic estrogen metabolite. No detectable 4-hydroxyestradiol was produced by gill and gonad microsomes. These results will ultimately help in determining which fish P450 genes are susceptible to environmental contamination and may be involved in estrogen genotoxicity.  相似文献

Induction of hepatic cytochrome P450-dependent microsomal mono-oxygenase by xenobiotics is a well-established phenomenon in teleost fish. As in laboratory mammals, fish possess multiple forms of cytochrome P450 that display overlapping substrate specificity. One such isoform, CYP1A1, which has been cloned and sequenced from rainbow trout, has been shown to be orthologous to rat CYP1A1 and, as in mammals, is inducible up to several hundred-fold by planar aromatic hydrocarbons, PCBs and dioxins. It has been suggested that induction of CYP1A1 orthologues might provide a sensitive biomonitor for environmental pollution by mixtures of such compounds. In the current study, polyclonal antibodies directed against CYP1A1 purified from rat and trout liver were used to monitor induction of the CYP1A1 orthologue in hepatic microsomes from the fresh water species, the channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). Catfish from a local fish farm were induced in the laboratory by three daily injections of 50 mg/kg of the PCB mixture Aroclor 1254 and compared with fish taken from a site in central Arkansas—the Bayou Meto, known to be polluted with dioxin. Hepatic microsomal activities towards ethoxyresorufin (EROD) and pentoxyresorufin (PROD) were measured and Western blot analysis carried out with the two antibodies. EROD was elevated in both the Aroclor-treated fish and in the Bayou Meto fish compared with untreated fish farm controls; smaller but significant increases were observed in PROD. Spearman's rank correlations of 0·74 and 0·89 were observed between EROD and immunoquantified cross-reactivity towards the rat CYP1A1 and trout CYP1A1 antibodies.  相似文献

An industry accepted standard does not currently exist for determination of compression limits in a subsea cable. This has resulted in most manufacturers specifying that subsea cables are not permitted to be axially loaded in compression.Additionally industry guidance does not exist regarding the consequences of inducing compression forces within subsea cables and the resulting effect on cable integrity. Industry recommended practice and guidance also does not have any information regarding experimental test arrangements to determine allowable compression levels within a subsea cable. This lack of modelling/testing guidance along with manufacturer recommendations of zero compressive loads within subsea cables results in overly conservative and restrictive design parameters for subsea cable installation and use.Due to the complex interaction within a subsea cable structure, such as contact interaction and friction between cable strands, theoretical modelling has been unable to provide reliable stress predictions and therefore an experimental testing regime is required if compression limits within the cable are to be appropriately determined. This paper describes combined axial and bending test arrangements that can be used as a guideline for determination of allowable compression limits for subsea cables.  相似文献

This paper addresses the problem of simultaneous depth tracking and attitude control of an underwater towed vehicle. The system proposed uses a two-stage towing arrangement that includes a long primary cable, a gravitic depressor, and a secondary cable. The towfish motion induced by wave driven disturbances in both the vertical and horizontal planes is described using an empirical model of the depressor motion and a spring-damper model of the secondary cable. A nonlinear, Lyapunov-based, adaptive output feedback control law is designed and shown to regulate pitch, yaw, and depth tracking errors to zero. The controller is designed to operate in the presence of plant parameter uncertainty. When subjected to bounded external disturbances, the tracking errors converge to a neighbourhood of the origin that can be made arbitrarily small. In the implementation proposed, a nonlinear observer is used to estimate the linear velocities used by the controller thus dispensing with the need for costly sensor suites. The results obtained with computer simulations show that the controlled system exhibits good performance about different operating conditions when subjected to sea-wave driven disturbances and in the presence of sensor noise. The system holds promise for application in oceanographic missions that require depth tracking or bottom-following combined with precise vehicle attitude control.  相似文献
