A three-dimensional model of the magnetic field configuration in the heliosphere is constructed by assuming that the interplanetary magnetic field consists of four components, (i) the solar dipole, (ii) a large number of small spherical dipoles located along an equatorial circle just inside the Sun (representing the magnetic field line arcade), (iii) the field of the poloidal current system generated by the solar unipolar induction and (iv) the field of an extensive current disc around the Sun lying in the ecliptic plane. The magnetic field intensity at a distance of 1 A.U. (about 20 R⊙ above the ecliptic plane) is normalized to fit the observed spiral configuration.  相似文献

The problem of electromagnetic perturbations of charged dust particle orbits in interplanetary space has been re-examined in the light of our better understanding of the large scale spatial and temporal interplanetary plasma and field topology. Using both analytical and numerical solutions for particle propagation it was shown that: (1) stochastic variations induced by electromagnetic forces are unimportant for the zodiacal dust cloud except for the lowest masses, (2) systemetic variations in orbit inclinations are unimportant if orbital radii are larger than 10 a.u. This is due to the solar cycle variation in magnetic polarity which tends to cancel out systematic effects, (3) systematic variations in orbital parameters (inclination, longitude of ascending node, longitude of perihel) induced by electromagnetic forces inside 1 a.u. tend to shift the plane of symmetry of the zodiacal dust cloud somewhat towards the solar magnetic equatorial plane, (4) inside 0.3 a.u. there is a possibility that dust particles may enter a region of “magnetically resonant” orbits for some time. Changes in orbit parameters are then correspondingly enhanced, (5) the observed similarity of the plane of symmetry of zodiacal light with the solar equatorial plane may be the effect of the interaction of charged interplanetary dust particles with the interplanetary magnetic field. Numerical orbit calculation of dust particles show that one of the results of this interaction is the rotation of the orbit plane about the solar rotational axis.  相似文献

An analysis of 373 well-defined high-speed solar-wind streams observed at 1 AU during the years 1985–1996 is outlined. The distribution of the occurrence of these streams as a function of Bartels rotation days using the dominant polarity of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) associated with the referred fast streams shows that a four-sector pattern for the positive IMF polarity and a two-sector pattern for the negative IMF polarity are the dominant features in the investigated period. The high-speed streams seem to occur at preferred Bartels days: positive polarity streams are most frequent near Bartels days 5 and 18, while negative polarity streams are most frequent in days 14 and 23. Moreover, the corotating streams with positive IMF polarity prefer to occur in days 5 and 18 of the Bartels rotation period, whereas flare-generated streams with negative IMF polarity occur in days 14 and 23. The observed distribution of Bartels days is probably related to the distribution of the solar sources of high-speed solar wind streams as the solar wind carries with it the photospheric magnetic polarity of the solar source region. In addition, the distribution of the streams reveals a similar behaviour during the ascending and the declining phase of the last solar cycle (22nd) in contrast to the previous one where it has an opposite appearance. Determined differences in the characteristics of the sector structured IMF associated with the fast streams of the last cycle with the previous one (21st) and some similarities with the alternate solar cycle (20th) seem to be attributed to the 22-year magnetic cycle and to the polarity reversals of the polar magnetic field of the Sun. As the magnetic sectors are due to multiple crossings of the solar equatorial plane by a large-scale, warped heliospheric current sheet, it is suggested that the two-sector pattern arises from a tilted solar magnetic dipole component and the more commonly observed four-sector pattern from a quadrupole component of the solar interplanetary magnetic field.  相似文献

An analysis, with a representative (canonical) example of solar-flare-generated equatorial disturbances, is presented for the temporal and spatial changes in the solar wind plasma and magnetic field environment between the Sun and one astronomical unit (AU). Our objective is to search for first order global consequences rather than to make a parametric study. The analysis - an extension of earlier planar studies - considers all three plasma velocity and magnetic field components (V r, Vφ, V0, and B r, B0, Bφ) in any convenient heliospheric plane of symmetry such as the ecliptic plane, the solar equatorial plane, or the heliospheric equatorial plane chosen for its ability (in a tilted coordinate system) to order northern and southern hemispheric magnetic topology and latitudinal solar wind flows. Latitudinal velocity and magnetic field gradients in and near the plane of symmetry are considered to provide higher-order corrections of a specialized nature and, accordingly, are neglected, as is dissipation, except at shock waves. The representative disturbance is examined for the canonical case in which one describes the temporal and spatial changes in a homogeneous solar wind caused by a solar-flare-generated shock wave. The ‘canonical’ solar flare is assumed to produce a shock wave that has a velocity of 1000 km s#X2212;1 at 0.08 AU. We have examined all plasma and field parameters at three radial locations: central meridian and 33° W and 90° W of the flare's central meridian. A higher shock velocity (3000 km s#X2212;1) was also used to demonstrate the model's ability to simulate a strongly-kinked interplanetary field. Among the global (first-order) results are the following: (i) incorporation of a small meridional magnetic field in the ambient magnetic spiral field has negligible effect on the results; (ii) the magnetic field demonstrates strong kinking within the interplanetary shocked flow, even reversed polarity that - coupled with low temperature and low density - suggests a viable explanation for observed ‘magnetic clouds’ with accompanying double-streaming of electrons at directions ~ 90° to the heliocentric radius.  相似文献

The large-scale structure of the solar magnetic field during the past five sunspot cycles (representing by implication a much longer interval of time) has been investigated using the polarity (toward or away from the Sun) of the interplanetary magnetic field as inferred from polar geomagnetic observations. The polarity of the interplanetary magnetic field has previously been shown to be closely related to the polarity (into or out of the Sun) of the large-scale solar magnetic field. It appears that a solar structure with four sectors per rotation persisted through the past five sunspot cycles with a synodic rotation period near 27.0 days, and a small relative westward drift during the first half of each sunspot cycle and a relative eastward drift during the second half of each cycle. Superposed on this four-sector structure there is another structure with inward field polarity, a width in solar longitude of about 100° and a synodic rotation period of about 28 to 29 days. This 28.5 day structure is usually most prominent during a few years near sunspot maximum. Some preliminary comparisons of these observed solar structures with theoretical considerations are given.  相似文献

For the period 1969–1975, a study has been made of the dependence of the interplanetary magnetic field structure on the distribution and evolutionary properties of solar magnetic fields. By direct comparison of a sequence of synoptic charts of the photospheric magnetic field with the interplanetary magnetic field, and by applying the method of correlation analysis, it is shown that to areas with an unstable polarity of the interplanetary magnetic field there correspond regions with a complicated inverse polarity line that forms either narrow gulfs and islands against a background of the dominant polarity, or bipolar magnetic regions and their clusters. At the time of reconstruction of the photospheric magnetic field the correlation between the photospheric and interplanetary magnetic field element distributions worsens. An asymmetry of the correlation between the interplanetary and photospheric magnetic field structures of different hemispheres is found. During the period of study, the interplanetary field structure shows a better correlation with the distribution of the photospheric magnetic field at middle and lower latitudes (0°–40°) of the southern hemisphere.  相似文献

The magnetic field lines of the corona associated with the solar-cycle surface general magnetic field are calculated by a potential-field approximation to study the solar-cycle evolution of the geometry of the coronal field. The surface field evolution used here is the radial field evolution, predicted by a model of the solar cycle driven by the dynamo action of the global convection, and justified observationally using Mount Wilson magnetic synoptic chart data. The evolution of the calculated coronal general field is now good for comparison with observations and shows the following. (i) The field of the polar and high-altitude corona has dipolar structure in almost all phases of the solar cycle except in a short time interval around maximum phase despite the quadrupolar structure of the general magnetic field at the surface; quadrupolar field forms loop-like structure in the lower corona. The almost-dipolar structure of the polar and high-latitude corona and the loop formation of the equatorial lower corona explain the appearance of the undisturbed minimum corona observed at eclipses. (ii) The polar field lines are directed almost radially at the minimum phase, which should be responsible for polar plumes. The field lines slowly open up to participate in the loop-like structure of the equatorial lower corona, and rapidly change their structure and polarity at the maximum phase, to resume the almost radial configuration slowly, (iii) During the rapidly changing maximum phase, the field lines do not penetrate deep into the interplanetary space resulting in the absence of polar plumes and the appearance of the circular corona- the maximum corona. In this phase, the coronal field should not be approximated by a dipole field. The surface field evolution which can explain such behaviors of the corona is characteristic of the solar-cycle process dominated by the latitudinal gradient of the differential rotation. If the radial gradient dominated in the subsurface process, the coronal evolution would look quite different and would show latitudinal propagation of enhancement of activity. Although nonaxisymmetric features should be superposed on the axisymmetric general field to express the real corona, the general field can be a basic coronal field in studying long-term interaction between the convection zone and the interstellar space especially in studying the magnetic braking of the solar rotation.  相似文献

The polarity of the interplanetary magnetic field observed by the Mariner IV spacecraft is compared to the polarity of the photospheric magnetic field observed with the solar magnetograph at Mt. Wilson Observatory. Unlike the results obtained from observations during the flight of IMP-I, these polarities are not well correlated when the photospheric polarity is determined from data along a narrow latitudinal strip. It is suggested that the structure of the interplanetary field is often related to major features in the photospheric field that are observed over a broad range of solar latitudes.  相似文献

Since the 1970s, the Solar-Terrestrial Environment Laboratory, Japan, has been publishing synoptic maps of solar wind velocity prepared using the technique of interplanetary scintillation. These maps, known as V-maps, are useful to study the global distribution of solar wind in the heliosphere. As the Earth-orbiting satellites are unable to probe regions outside the ecliptic, it is important to exploit the scope of interplanetary scintillation to study the solar wind properties at these regions and their relation with coronal features. It has been shown by Wang and Sheeley that there exists an inverse correlation between rate of magnetic flux expansion and the solar wind velocity. The NOAA/Space Environment Center daily updated version of the Wang and Sheeley model has been used to produce synoptic maps of solar wind velocity and magnetic field polarity for individual Carrington rotations. The predictions of the model at 1 AU have been found to be in good agreement with the observed values of the same. The present work is a comparison of the synoptic maps on the source surface using the interplanetary scintillation measurements from Japan and the NOAA/SEC version of the Wang and Sheeley model. The two results agree near the equatorial regions and the slow solar wind locations are consistent most of the times. However, at higher latitudes within ±60°, the wind velocities differ considerably. In the Wang and Sheeley model the highest speed obtained is 600 km s–1 whereas in the IPS results velocities as high as 800 km s–1 have been detected. The paper discusses the possible causes for this discrepancy and suggestion to improve the agreement between the two results.  相似文献

The persistent large-scale coronal magnetic structure associated with a sector boundary appears to consist of a magnetic arcade loop structure extending from one solar polar region to the other in approximately the north-south direction. This structure was inferred from computed coronal magnetic field maps for days on which a stable magnetic sector boundary was near central meridian, based on an interplanetary sector boundary observed to recur during much of 1968 and 1969.  相似文献

The mean photospheric magnetic field of the sun seen as a star has been compared with the interplanetary magnetic field observed with spacecraft near the earth. Each change in polarity of the mean solar field is followed about 4 1/2 days later by a change in polarity of the interplanetary field (sector boundary). The scaling of the field magnitude from sun to near earth is within a factor of two of the theoretical value, indicating that large areas on the sun have the same predominant polarity as that of the interplanetary sector pattern. An independent determination of the zero level of the solar magnetograph has yielded a value of 0.1±0.05 G. An effect attributed to a delay of approximately one solar rotation between the appearance of a new photospheric magnetic feature and the resulting change in the interplanetary field is observed.  相似文献

New observations of the out-of-the ecliptic trajectories of type III solar radio bursts have been obtained from simultaneous direction finding measurements on two independent satellite experiments, IMP-6 with spin plane in the ecliptic, and RAE-2 with spin plane normal to the ecliptic. Burst exciter trajectories were observed which originated at the active region and then crossed the ecliptic plane at about 0.8 AU. We find a considerable large scale north-south component of the interplanetary magnetic field followed by the exciters. The apparent north-south and east-west angular source sizes observed by the two spacecraft are approximately equal, and range from 25° at 600 kHz to 110° at 80 kHz.  相似文献

Data from the two HEOS satellites obtained during the period December 1968 to August 1974 are used to investigate the large-scale properties of the interplanetary magnetic field. The sector structure has been deduced from the observed times of sector boundary crossings which are tabulated. A two-sector pattern existed throughout most of the period with occasional intervals of 2–3 months duration in which four sectors appeared. The variation of the dominant sector polarity with heliographic latitude showed a reversal in sense during 1971 at the time of the reported reversal in the Sun's polar field. A statistical analysis of the change in polarity distribution with latitude suggests that at Earth's orbit the sector boundaries are inclined to the solar equator on average at an angle of 12 deg.No evidence was found in the HEOS measurements of the north-south field component to confirm the systematic latitude-dependent deviation of the plasma flow away from the solar equatorial plane suggested by several analyses of data from previous spacecraft. The mean field magnitude and the average amplitude of the directional fluctuations appeared to be independent of heliographic latitude within the ±7.3° range explored.  相似文献

The possible relation between type I noise active regions and the polarity distribution of the interplanetary magnetic field is examined for the period from 13 March to 21 August, 1968 (Solar Rotation Numbers 1842–1847) by using data from ground-based and satellite observations. In general four type I radio regions appeared during each solar rotation period except for Rotation No. 1842. The number of type I regions is the same as the number of sector boundaries. This result suggests that the configuration of the photospheric magnetic field extending into the interplanetary space may be related to the origin of the type I radio regions. Statistically the passage of the sector boundaries is delayed by approximately 5 days after the central meridian passage of the type I noise regions on the solar disk. The position of the source of the sector boundaries and its relation to the type I radio regions are investigated by taking into account the mean bulk velocity of solar winds as observed by space probes. A model of the large-scale structure of type I radio regions and their relation to the sector structure of the magnetic field as observed in the interplanetary space is briefly discussed.NASA Research Associate at the University of Maryland.  相似文献

Using the cosmic-ray intensity data recorded with ground-based monitors at Mt. Washington and Deep River, and with cosmic-ray telescopes on Pioneer 8 and 9 spacecraft as well as the 2-hour averages of the IMF (magnitude and direction) and the solar wind bulk speed and density at 1 AU, the cosmic-ray decreases and interplanetary disturbances, that occurred during the period of solar magnetic polarity reversal in solar cycle 20, were investigated. We observed a two-step Forbush decrease on 22–23 November 1969, and a Forbush decrease on 26 November 1969, which are respectively consistent with the model of Barnden (1973), and of Parker (1963) and Barnden (1973). Only one Forbush decrease event was observed in December 1969, a period during which there was a solar magnetic polarity reversal; the Forbush decrease was attributed to a long-lived corotating high-speed solar wind stream. This is indicative that at heliolongitudes from 43° E to 70° W of S–E radial, covered by the observations, the solar magnetic polarity reversal in solar cycle 20 was not carried by, nor related to, individual transient structures, and that the reversal most probably evolved gradually.  相似文献

The skewness of the monthly distribution of GSE latitudinal angles of Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) observed near the Earth (Sk) is found to show anti-correlation with sunspot activity during the solar cycles 20–24. Sk can be considered as a measure of the predominant polarity of north-south component of IMF (Bz component) in the GSE system near 1 AU. Sk variations follow the magnitude of solar polar magnetic fields in general and polarity of south polar fields in particular during the years 1967–2020. Predominant polarity of Sk is found to be independent of the heliographic latitude of Earth. Sk basically reflects the variations of the solar dipolar magnetic field during a sunspot cycle. It is also found that IMF sector polarity variation is not a good indicator of the magnitude changes in solar polar magnetic fields during a sunspot cycle. This is possibly due to the influence of non-dipolar components of the solar magnetic field and the associated north-south asymmetries in the heliospheric current sheet.  相似文献

Preferred bartels days of high-speed plasma streams in the solar wind   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
An analysis of 346 high-speed solar wind streams observed at 1 AU during 1964–75 is presented. The analysis shows that a two-sector structure was the dominant feature of the interplanetary magnetic field associated with the high-speed solar wind plasma. The high-speed streams occurred at preferred Bartels days: Positive polarity streams were most frequent near Bartels day 4, negative polarity streams were most frequent near Bartels day 17. Since the solar wind carries with it the photospheric magnetic polarity of the solar source region, the observed distribution of Bartels days must indicate a fundamental property of the distribution of the solar sources of high-speed plasma streams. The observations are explained in terms of a tilted dipole model of the solar-interplanetary field.Proceedings of the 14th ESLAB Symposium on Physics of Solar Variations, 16–19 September 1980, Scheveningen, The Netherlands.  相似文献

We propose a scenario to explain the observed phenomenon of double maxima of sunspot cycles, including the generation of a magnetic field near the bottom of the solar convection zone (SCZ) and the subsequent rise of the field from the deep layers to the surface in the royal zone. Five processes are involved in the restructuring of the magnetic field: the Ω-effect, magnetic buoyancy, macroscopic turbulent diamagnetism, rotary ?ρ-effect, and meridional circulation. It is found that the restructuring of magnetism develops differently in high-latitude and equatorial domains of the SCZ. A key role in the proposed mechanism of the double maxima is played by two waves of toroidal fields from the lower base of the SCZ to the solar surface in the equatorial domain. The deep toroidal fields are excited by the Ω-effect near the tachocline at the beginning of the cycle. Then these fields are transported to the surface due to the combined effect of magnetic buoyancy, macroscopic turbulent diamagnetism, and the rotary magnetic ?ρ-flux in the equatorial domain. After a while, these magnetic fragments can be observed as bipolar sunspot groups at the middle latitudes in the royal zone. This first, upward-directed wave of toroidal fields produces the main maximum of sunspot activity. However, the underlying toroidal fields in the high-latitude polar domains are blocked at the beginning of the cycle near the SCZ bottom by two antibuoyancy effects — the downward turbulent diamagnetic transfer and the magnetic ?ρ-pumping. In approximately 1 or 2 years, a deep equatorward meridional flow transfers these fields to low-latitude parts of the equatorial domain (where there are favorable conditions for magnetic buoyancy), and the belated magnetic fields (the second wave of toroidal fields) rise to the surface. When this second batch of toroidal fields comes to the solar surface at low latitudes, it leads to the second sunspot maximum.  相似文献

The evolution of the background magnetic field with the solar cycle has been studied using the dipole-quadrupole magnetic energy behaviour in a cycle. The combined energy of the axisymmetric dipole, non-axisymmetric quadrupole, and equatorial dipole is relatively lowly variable over the solar cycle. The dipole field changed sign when the quadrupole field was near a maximum, andvice versa. A conceptual picture involving four meridional magnetic polarity sectors proposed to explain these features may be in agreement with equatorial coronal hole observations. The rate of sector rotation is estimated to be 8 heliographic degrees per year faster than the Carrington rotation (P = 27.23d synodic). Polarity boundaries of sectors located 180° apart show meridional migrations in one direction, while the boundaries of the other two sectors move in the opposite direction. A simple model of how the magnetic field energy varies, subject to specifying reasonable initial photospheric magnetic and velocity field patterns, follows the observed evolution of the dipole and quadrupole field energies quite nicely.  相似文献

The interplanetary magnetic field has been mapped between 0.4 and 1.2 AU in the ecliptic plane, extrapolating from satellite measurements at 1 AU. The structure within sectors and the evolution of sectors are discussed. The development of a solar active region appears to produce magnetic loops in the interplanetary medium that result in the formation of a new sector.  相似文献
