It is a common opinion that only crustal earthquakes can occur in the Crimea–Black Sea region. Since the existence of deep earthquakes in the Crimea–Black Sea region is extremely important for the construction of a geodynamic model for this region, an attempt is made to verify the validity of this widespread view. To do this, the coordinates of all earthquakes recorded by the stations of the Crimean seismological network are reinterpreted with an algorithm developed by one of the authors. The data published in the seismological catalogs and bulletins of the Crimea–Black Sea region for 1970–2012 are used for the analysis. To refine the coordinates of hypocenters of earthquakes in the Crimea–Black Sea region, in addition to the data from stations of the Crimean seismological network, information from seismic stations located around the Black Sea coast are used. In total, the data from 61 seismic stations were used to determine the hypocenter coordinates. The used earthquake catalogs for 1970–2012 contain information on ~2140 events with magnitudes from–1.5 to 5.5. The bulletins provide information on the arrival times of P- and S-waves at seismic stations for 1988 events recorded by three or more stations. The principal innovation of this study is the use of the original author’s hypocenter determination algorithm, which minimizes the functional of distances between the points (X, Y, H) and (x, y, h) corresponding to the theoretical and observed seismic wave travel times from the earthquake source to the recording stations. The determination of the coordinates of earthquake hypocenters is much more stable in this case than the usual minimization of the residual functional for the arrival time of an earthquake wave at a station (the difference between the theoretical and observed values). Since determination of the hypocenter coordinates can be influenced by the chosen velocity column beneath each station, special attention is focused on collecting information on velocity profiles. To evaluate the influence of the upper mantle on the results of calculating the velocity model, two different low-velocity and high-velocity models are used; the results are compared with each other. Both velocity models are set to a depth of 640 km, which is fundamentally important in determining hypocenters for deep earthquakes. Studies of the Crimea–Black Sea region have revealed more than 70 earthquakes with a source depth of more than 60 km. The adequacy of the obtained depth values is confirmed by the results of comparing the initial experimental data from the bulletins with the theoretical travel-time curves for earthquake sources with depths of 50 and 200 km. The sources of deep earthquakes found in the Crimea–Black Sea region significantly change our understanding of the structure and geotectonics of this region.  相似文献

The problem of determining focal depths of earthquakes in the Crimea–Black Sea region is considered. Based on the results of interannual studies, it is found that the focal depths of Crimean earthquakes are mainly crustal, with maximum values of up to 60 km. Some recent publications, however, have described deep-focus earthquakes with depths of up to 300 km which were “revealed” in the Crimean region. In this respect, there arose the need to study such a large difference in estimated focal depths. Convincing examples show that the sensational “revelation” of deep earthquakes in Crimea was caused by incorrect processing of the experimental data, in particular, due to (1) a sharp distortion in the recorded arrival times of body waves, (2) exclusion of data from stations nearest to a source, (3) unreasonable arbitrary selection of data from seismic stations, and (4) dropping of data from the worldwide seismological network, including those on deep seismic phases. Thus, the conclusions about the presence of deep mantle earthquakes in Crimea are erroneous. We have redetermined the parameters of hypocenters and verified that the focal depths of earthquakes in the Crimea–Black Sea region are no more than 60 km. Based on these data, we analyze the features of the spatial distribution of focal depths to show that earthquake sources are grouped along conduits that dip southeastward, from the continental part of Crimea toward the Black Sea Basin, in the case of grouping of sources in the Alushta–Yalta and Sevastopol areas. The seismic focal layer of the Kerch–Anapa area dips northeastward, from the Black Sea beneath the North Caucasus.  相似文献

In an experimental study of requirements for the operational monitoring of nuclear tests, seismological data collected by a small but globally distributed network of array stations are transmitted to Blacknest Data Analysis Centre.Important features of the experiment have been the improvement of data communications links with the cooperating agencies which operate the overseas arrays and with other national data centres, together with the creation of a data-base on computer files linked to the ARPANETWORK and accessible to collaborating organisations.A brief summary is given of some results of event analyses using data mainly from single recording points at the array stations. These are preliminary results from the network, preceding an eventual improvement in detection capability of the array stations which will ensue when the installation of on-line processing systems is completed.  相似文献

This paper presents the main results from the development of the detailed seismological observation system in Kamchatka and the information on the system as of 2011. We describe the networks of seismological stations, the systems for the acquisition, storage, and processing of seismological observations and their technical, methodological, and software support. We discuss the basic characteristics of the recording channels and the system as a whole. We present the information resources of the Kamchatka seismological data bank that provide for basic research in earth sciences. In 2011, the system of seismological observation in Kamchatka was a specialized network for acquisition (recording), storage, transmission, and processing of seismic and geophysical data that provides support for the effective monitoring of seismic and volcanic activities, as well as tsunami warning.  相似文献

Earthquakes that occur on the territory of Vietnam and especially in the South China Sea are a major hazard to the Vietnam population and infrastructure because of possible destruction and tsunamis, like those took place there in earlier times according to geological data. Therefore, in the early 2000s, the government of Vietnam decided to modernize and expand the network of seismological observations on the territory of the republic. First, it was planned to modernize the seismic network in Vietnam with 20 broadband seismic stations and then increase that number to 30. This raised the problem of the optimal arrangement of these stations in the country to predict earthquakes and study the structure of the crust and upper mantle of Vietnam. The map of Vietnam clearly shows the impossibility of constructing a single optimal observation network to locate earthquake hypocenters over the entire territory, because it is strongly elongated from north to south. Any seismological observation network for such an entire territory will not be optimal. In this case, we can speak about improving local observation networks for some areas, such as the north, center, and south of the country. This work estimates the efficiency (distribution of the minimum representative magnitudes and the error in determining the coordinates of earthquake hypocenters) for the new network of seismological observations in Vietnam, consisting of 30 stations. To improve the quality of the network in central and southern Vietnam, six more seismic stations are proposed. Such a network will allow more accurate determination of the hypocenter parameters in central and southern Vietnam. During the construction of the optimal network configuration, one of the main problems was the choice of an effective network radius. The formula for determining the optimal radius in the seismic observation network is obtained for the case of a uniform distribution of hypocenters in a certain cylindrical region based on the radius of the base and height of this cylinder. In this work, it follows from the formula that the radius of the optimal network should be no less than the radius of the hypocentral region. In our case, the choice of network radius is confined within the state borders and coastline of Vietnam. These restrictions are taken into account in the calculations to optimize the number of seismic stations and the configuration of their location in the country.  相似文献

Efficiency of the modern network of seismological observations in Vietnam is estimated, and an optimal design of planning network, consisted of 14 seismic stations is proposed. The seismological observation system in China has experienced rapid development over the Tenth Five-year Plan period. China Earthquake Administration (CEA) has completed the establishment of China digital seismological observation network. CEA has accomplished analog-to-digital conversion of the existing seismological observation systems and set up a number of new digital seismic stations. The method for determining earthquake source parameters is considered in details. The experience in the seismological data interpretation taking recent velocity profiles of the region into account is demonstrated and the determination accuracy is justified. Summary The paper is intended as a contribution to the quantitative analysis of travel-time curves of seismic events recorded in the Ostrava-Karviná District (OKD). The input data represent a set of 2621 seismic events, recorded by the local seismological network of 26 mine stations DSLA and a regional diagnostic polygon consisting of five surface Lennartz stations. All the events were processed automatically in the Operational Seismological Centre of the Czechoslovak Army Mine in Karviná and stored in the seismological data base. The results are presented in the form of graphs of arrival times versus distance for the whole OKD, for two mines and one tectonic block.Travel-time curves of direct P and S waves, as well as of reflected and refracted waves are given. The direct P and S waves propagate well practically throughout the whole region studied, but their apparent velocities of propagation are affected by the properties of the rock medium.As a result of the complicated geological conditions, the recorded wave image is quite complicated. Methods of mathematical modelling, using kinematic and dynamic parameters of seismic waves, will have to be applied to identify the separate wave groups uniquely.  相似文献

The Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics provides seismological services which complement those provided by several other agencies.The services comprise the operation of 20 seismograph stations in continental Australia, and the operation of regional data centres for earthquakes and strong earth-motion data. The ambit of the data centres includes BMR stations in Antarctica and Papua New Guinea, and foreign stations in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Most of the data are lodged at World Data Centres, and the remainder are available from the BMR national centre.The combined Australian network has provided data at a regional level only for about the last twenty years. These have however, been sufficient to show that although seismicity is low it is not insignificant, and that there are several areas where damaging earthquakes can be expected to recur at 50-year intervals; about 500 Australian earthquakes are located annually.Complete national location capability does not extend below Richter magnitude 4, and it is unlikely that significant improvements can be expected in the near future. In most of the areas where earthquake risk is important from a civil standpoint the detection capability is about magnitude 3. For the other more remote areas advanced techniques based on unattended seismometers and satellite telemetry will probably be needed to attain the same capability.  相似文献

The method of coda waves was applied to two different sets of data for the evaluation of the relative site response.The first set of data consists of low magnitude earthquakes with closely spaced locations, recorded at a small aperture array of velocimeters located in the Abruzzo region, central Italy. The second set of data is composed of events with epicentral distance ranging from 20 to 300 km, recorded at a seismological network with an aperture of about 100 km located in the Puglia region, southern Italy.Results show that the coda wave method furnishes stable estimates of the site effect. An amplification, relative to an arbitrary site, of a factor of about 2 occurs in the 1.7–6 Hz frequency band for two stations of the Abruzzo network, while an amplification factor of about 0.5 occurs in the whole frequency band (1–24 Hz) for one of the stations of the Puglia network. This station is located in an area which is correlated with a low macroseismic intensity anomaly.  相似文献
