Abstract

We apply the MHD energy principle to the stability of a magnetized atmosphere which is bounded below by much denser fluid, as is the solar corona. We treat the two fluids as ideal; the approximation which is consistent with the energy principle, and use the dynamical conditions that must hold at a fluid-fluid interface to show that if vertical displacements of the lower boundary are permitted, then the lower atmosphere must be perturbed as well. However, displacements which do not perturb the coronal boundary can be properly treated as isolated perturbations of the corona alone.  相似文献

Herein the propagation of transient waves in a rod due to impulsive end loading is investigated using the method of wavefront expansion. The Mindlin–Herrmann equations which include the Poisson effect are used to model the rod. Since this rod theory is restricted to lower values of Poisson's ratio (< 0.283), the present work also has the same restriction. The impulsive end loading on the rod can be prescribed in the form of stress, strain, velocity or acceleration boundary conditions. The analysis is based on the concept of a wave as a carrier of discontinuities in the field variables and their derivatives. These discontinuities are determined from a set of recurrence relations which are in turn generated by the use of time harmonic asymptotic series solutions to the equations of motion. Transients due to both velocity and strain (or stress) boundary conditions are treated. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the method of solution. The results indicate the distortion of the transient waves due to the dispersive nature of the governing equations. Transients due to other boundary conditions at the rod end can be treated by using the results presented in the paper.  相似文献

Abstract

The nonlinear equations of motion are integrated numerically in time for a region of x‐y‐z space of volume 3h × h × h, where h turns out to be a height slightly above the level where the wind first attains the geostrophic flow direction. Only the ideal case is treated of a horizontal lower boundary, neutral stability, horizontal homogeneity of all dependent mean variables except the mean pressure, and statistically steady state. The resulting flow patterns are turbulent and the eddies transport required amounts of momentum vertically.

Topics which are investigated include the relative directions of stress, wind shear and wind; differences in Ekman wind spirals for the neutral numerical case and a stable atmospheric case; profiles of dimensionless turbulence statistics; effect of allowing the mean density to be either constant or to decrease with height; effect of the wind direction or latitude upon the turbulence intensities; and characteristic structure of the eddies in the planetary boundary layer.  相似文献

This paper presents a complete asymptotic analysis of a simple model for the evolution of the nocturnal temperature distribution on bare soil in calm clear conditions. The model is based on a simplified flux emissivity scheme that provides a nondiffusive local approximation for estimating longwave radiative cooling near ground. An examination of the various parameters involved shows that the ratio of the characteristic radiative to the diffusive timescale in the problem is of order 10−3, and can therefore be treated as a small parameter (μ). Certain other plausible approximations and linearization lead to a new equation whose asymptotic solution as μ → 0 can be written in closed form. Four regimes, consisting of a transient at nominal sunset, a radiative-diffusive boundary (‘Ramdas’) layer on ground, a boundary layer transient and a radiative outer solution, are identified. The asymptotic solution reproduces all the qualitative features of more exact numerical simulations, including the occurrence of a lifted temperature minimum and its evolution during night, ranging from continuing growth to relatively sudden collapse of the Ramdas layer.  相似文献

Materials of structural-functional studies regarding the organization of the Moskva River ecosystem within the boundary of the city are presented, and the impact of the treated water discharged from Kur’yanovskaya Aeration Station onto aquatic biota is assessed. The conclusion is made that the structural-functional organization of biocenoses in different river reaches is related with the environmental factors that form under the effect of this water.  相似文献

Two coeval sections of red to white ammonite-rich pelagic limestones spanning the complete Kimmeridgian and most of the Tithonian were sampled in detail. All samples were treated by progressive thermal demagnetization to remove a present field overprint. Characteristic magnetization is carried primarily by magnetite. Polarity intervals are easily identified and correlate well between the two sections. The Tithonian polarity sequence can also be correlated to sections in northern Italy. The similarity between the polarity sequence and the M-sequence of marine magnetic anomalies, coupled with the precise biostratigraphic control, allows assignment of the following ages to the M-sequence: the Late/Early Tithonian boundary is correlated to the end of M-20, the Tithonian/Kimmeridgian boundary to the end of M-23, the Late/Early Kimmeridgian boundary to the latter part of M-24, and the Kimmeridgian/Oxfordian boundary within or slightly after M-25.The mean directions of characteristic magnetization have α95's less than 3° and demonstrate extensive differential block rotation within the Subbetic province. Paleolatitudes during the Kimmeridgian/Tithonian are in the range of 16–24°N.  相似文献

Scattering of Seismic Waves by Cracks with the Boundary Integral Method   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
— We develop a new scheme to compute 2-D SH seismograms for media with many flat cracks, based on the boundary integral method. A dry or traction-free boundary condition is applied to crack surfaces although other kinds of cracks such as wet or fluid-saturated cracks can be treated simply by assigning different boundary conditions. While body forces are distributed for cavities or inclusions to express scattered wave, dislocations (or displacement discontinuities between the top and the bottom surfaces of each crack) are used as fictitious sources along crack surfaces. With these dislocations as unknown coefficients, the scattered wave is expressed by the normal derivative of Green's function along the crack surface, which is called “double-layer potentials” in the boundary integral method, while we used “single-layer potentials” for cavities or inclusions. These unknowns are determined so that boundary conditions or crack surfaces are satisfied in the least-squared sense, for example, traction-free for dry cracks. Seismograms with plane-wave incidence are synthesized for homogeneous media with many cracks. First, we check the accuracy of our scheme for a medium with one long crack. All the predicted phases such as reflected wave, diffraction from a crack tip and shadow behind the crack are simulated quite accurately, under the same criterion as in the case for cavities or inclusions. Next, we compute seismograms for 50 randomly distributed cracks and compare them with those for circular cavities. When cracks are randomly oriented, waveforms and the strength of scattering attenuation are similar to the cavity case in a frequency range higher than k d $\simeq$ 2 where the size of scatterers d (i.e., crack length or cavity diameter) is comparable with the wavelength considered (k is the wavenumber). On the other hand, the scattering attenuation for cracks becomes much smaller in a lower frequency range (k d<2) because only the volume but not detail geometry of scatterers becomes important with wavelength much longer than each scatterer. When all the cracks are oriented in a fixed direction, the scattering attenuation depends strongly on the incident angle to the crack surface as frequency increases (k d>2): scattering becomes weak for cracks oriented parallel to the direction of the incident wave, while it gets close to the cavity case for cracks aligned perpendicular to the incident wave.  相似文献

In this paper, the degenerate kernels and Fourier series expansions are adopted in the null-field integral equation to solve the exterior Helmholtz problems with alluvial valleys. The main gain of using degenerate kernels in integral equations is free of calculating the principal values for singular integrals by locating the null-field point exactly on the real boundary. An adaptive observer system is addressed to fully employ the property of degenerate kernels for circular boundaries in the polar coordinate. Image concept and technique of decomposition are utilized for half-plane problems. After moving the null-field point to the real boundary and matching the boundary conditions, a linear algebraic system is obtained without boundary discretization. The unknown coefficients in the algebraic system can be easily determined. The present method is treated as a “semi-analytical” solution since error only attributes to the truncation of Fourier series. Earthquake analysis for the site response of alluvial valley or canyon subject to the incident SH-wave is the main concern. Numerical examples including single and successive alluvial valleys are given to test our program. Limiting cases of a single canyon and two successive canyons are also addressed. Amplification of soft basin is also observed in this study. The validity of the semi-analytical method is verified. Our advantages, well-posed model, principal value free, elimination of boundary-layer effect and exponential convergence and mesh-free, by using the present method are achieved.  相似文献

Abstract

A mathematical model of the flow and temperature distribution of polythermal glaciers or ice sheets is deduced. Cold ice is treated as a non-linear viscous heat conducting fluid, while temperate ice is regarded as a binary mixture of ice and water. The simplest mixture concept with two balance laws of mass but only one balance law of momentum and energy is proposed. The field equations for the ice and water content and the boundary conditions which must hold at the free surface, at the ice-water interface, at the cold-temperature transition surface and at the rock-bed are deduced. In particular it is shown that an earlier formulation of polythermal ice due to Fowler and Larson (1978) is inconsistent. No boundary value problems are solved as the emphasis is on the physical motivation and justification of the principles.  相似文献

Abstract

Chandrasekhar (1961) has summarized the stability results of Bénard convection in a rotating fluid for the cases where the boundary surfaces are both rigid and free, and for both exchange of stabilities and overstability. His analysis provides very accurate results for a limited range of Taylor number J. Bisshopp and Niiler (1965) presented an asymptotic analysis of the rigid boundary problem for exchange of stabilities which is valid for very large Taylor number. The present paper makes use of modern rotating fluid theory to develop an approximate scheme for evaluating the Rayleigh number and other parameters and variables. Known asymptotic results for the free boundary problem at large J are used and an expansion in powers of E1/6 (the Ekman number, E = 2J ) yields a sequence of equations and appropriate boundary conditions for the rigid boundary problem. After the algorithm for the calculation is developed, results are given for the problem to second order in the expansion parameter for the case of exchange of stabilities and to first order in the expansion parameters for the overstable case. Ekman boundary layers are important in the development as one might expect. However, an additional, diffusive boundary layer of thickness E? is necessary to provide the details of the temperature field. This boundary layer is the thermal response in the vertical direction to the horizontal spacing of the cells which is also order E?. The horizontal spacing of the cells is essentially a series of contiguous, Stewartson (1957) layers of thickness E?.  相似文献

The simultaneous measurements of the boundary of the trapped radiation region, where auroral electrons precipitate, on the Meteor-3M satellite (the circular polar orbit at an altitude of ∼1000 km) and the westward electrojet dynamics during the main phase of a strong (Dst = −263 nT) magnetic storm that occurred on May 15, 2005, are analyzed. At the end of the first hour of the storm main phase, the nightside boundary of the trapped radiation region and the peak of the precipitating electron fluxes with a energies of ∼1 keV shifted toward the Earth to L ∼ 3. The westward electrojet center approached the same L shell. Near the boundary of the trapped radiation region, the auroral electron spectrum had the shape of typical inverted V. The differential spectrum maximum shifted to an energy of ∼100 eV, when the latitude decreased by ∼1°. The nightside boundary of the trapped radiation region, the electron precipitation equatorward boundary, and the westward electrojet center are compared with the known empirical dependences of the position of these structures on the Dst variation amplitude.  相似文献

The general time-domain boundary element in cylindrical co-ordinates developed for the study of wave propagation in a layered half-space is extended to the response analysis of single piles under horizontal transient excitations. The pile is treated as a beam, and therefore, only the bending stiffness has to be considered in the analysis. As required by the non-axisymmetric nature of the problem, the soil is modelled by boundary (cylindrical) elements with the vertical, radial and tangential displacements as well as their corresponding tractions as independent variables. The characteristic matrices for the two different types of element can be formed in the usual manner, and they are combined to form the equation of motion for the whole system by virtue of compatibility and equilibrium conditions along the pile-soil interface. The transient responses of a pile under Heaviside loads are found to converge to the static values. Parametric studies are carried out to reveal the influences of pile-soil stiffness ratio (Ep/Es) and soil layering.  相似文献

The paper presents results obtained in experiments on a horizontal layer heated from below in its central part and cooled from above; the layer models the oceanic asthenosphere. Flow velocity and temperature profiles are measured and the flow structure under boundary layer conditions is determined (at Rayleigh numbers Ra > 5 × 105). The flow in the core of a plane horizontal layer heated laterally and cooled from above develops under conditions of a constant temperature gradient averaged over the layer thickness. The flow core is modeled by a horizontal layer with a moving upper boundary and with adiabatic bounding surfaces under conditions of a constant horizontal gradient of temperature. Exact solutions of free convection equations are found for this model in the Boussinesq approximation. Model results are compared with experimental data. Temperature and flow velocity ranges are determined for the boundary layer regime. Based on the experimental flow velocity profiles, an expression is found for the flow velocity profile in a horizontal layer with a mobile upper boundary heated laterally and cooled from above. Free convection velocity profiles are obtained for the asthenosphere beneath a mid-ocean ridge (MOR) with a mobile lithosphere. An expression is obtained for the tangential stress at the top of the asthenosphere beneath an MOR and the total friction force produced by the asthenospheric flow at the asthenosphere-lithosphere boundary is determined.  相似文献

Summary The question this paper is examining is the following: to what extent are the Love numbers dependent on certain characteristics of the inner structure of the Earth? It has been proven — on the basis of calculations carried out by the author-that these quantities are only in a small degree dependent on the density values measured on the surface of the Earth and on the selection of the density function in the mantle of the Earth. On the other hand the value of Love numbersh, k andl is considerably influenced by the assumptions made about the core of the Earth, namely by the position of the boundary between the core and the mantle and by the magnitude of the rigidity coefficient presumed in the core in the vicinity of the core-mantle boundary.The results of the calculations are compared with those mean values of Love numbers obtained from the data of stations operating at different places of the Earth. By reason of this it can be assumed that the core of the Earth has, in the vicinity of the core-mantle boundary, a coefficient of effective rigidity of the order of 1010 dyn/cm2, if the core-mantle boundary is placed at the relative Earth radius of 0.545 from the centre of the Earth.  相似文献

模拟弹性波在孔隙介质中传播,需要稳定有效的吸收边界来消除或尽可能的减小由人工边界引起的虚假反射. 本文在前人工作基础上,首次建立了弹性孔隙介质情况下完全匹配层吸收边界的高阶速度-应力交错网格有限差分算法,并详细讨论了完全匹配层的构建及其有限差分算法实现. 首先,本文通过均匀孔隙模型的数值解与解析解的对比,验证所提出的数值方法的正确性;然后,本文考察了完全匹配层对不同入射角度入射波和自由表面上的瑞利波的吸收性能,将完全匹配层与廖氏和阻尼吸收边界进行了对比,研究了这三种吸收边界在不同吸收厚度情况下对弹性波吸收能力. 数值结果表明,在孔隙介质中,完全匹配层作为吸收边界能十分有效地吸收衰减外行波,无论对体波还是面波,是一种高效边界吸收算法.  相似文献

Summary An analytical solution is obtained for the flow to an eccentric well in a leaky circular aquifer with lateral replenishment, both for steady and unsteady cases. The flows for external boundary conditions of constant head and zero flux, which were treated previously, follow in the limit from a more general boundary condition. The residence time of a tracer in a control domain is usually computed by releasing tracer parcels and registering the time when each of these tracer parcels cross the boundary of the control domain. In this Lagrangian procedure, the particles are discarded or omitted as soon as they leave the control domain. In a Eulerian approach, the same approach can be implemented by integrating forward in time the advection–diffusion equation for a tracer. So far, the conditions to be applied at the boundary of the control domain were uncertain. We show here that it is necessary to prescribe that the tracer concentration vanishes at the boundary of the control domain to ensure the compatibility between the Lagrangian and Eulerian approaches. When we use the Constituent oriented Age and Residence time Theory (CART), this amounts to solving the differential equation for the residence time with boundary conditions forcing the residence time to vanish at the open boundaries of the control domain. Such boundary conditions are likely to induce the development of boundary layers (at outflow boundaries for the tracer concentration and at inflow boundaries for the residence time). The thickness of these boundary layers is of the order of the ratio of the diffusivity to the velocity. They can however be partly smoothed by tidal and other oscillating flows.  相似文献

Two different approaches to finite-difference modeling of the elastodynamic equations have been used: the heterogeneous and the homogeneous. In the heterogeneous approach, boundary conditions at interfaces are treated implicitly; in the homogeneous, they are explicitly discretized. We present a homogeneous finite-difference scheme for the 2-D P-SV-wave case. This scheme represents a generalization of earlier such schemes, being able to model media with arbitrary non-uniformities, provided only that all interfaces are aligned with the numerical grid. We perform a detailed comparison of the generalized homogeneous scheme with the analogous heterogeneous scheme, and show the two schemes to be identical for media with a spatially constynt Poisson's ratio. For media where Poisson's ratio is spatially varying, the schemes differ by terms first-order in the spatial step size. However, a comparison of the numerical results produced by the two schemes shows that the resulting differences are negligible for a wide range of values of the Poisson's ratio contrast.  相似文献
