Extensive NO3 contamination of groundwater in the Abbotsford aquifer to levels above drinking water limits is a major problem in the Fraser Lowlands of southwestern British Columbia, Canada. Nitrate concentrations in the aquifer ranged from 0 to 151 mg/l NO3, with a median concentration of 46 mg/l NO3. Of 117 wells sampled, 54% had NO3 concentrations exceeding the drinking water limit of 45 mg/1. Approximately 80% of the study area had groundwater NO3 concentrations exceeding 40 mg/1 NO3. Potential NO3 source materials were poultry manure N and synthetic NH4 based fertilizers. Theδ15N of solid poultry manure samples ranged between + 7.9 and + 8.6‰ (AIR). Four brands of synthetic fertilizers commonly used hadδ15N values between −1.5 and −0.6‰. Ammonia volatilization caused theδ15N of groundwater NO3 produced from poultry manure N to range between +8 and +16‰. Theδ18O values of groundwater NO3, by contrast, mostly ranged between +2 and +5‰ (SMOW). This narrow range ofδ18O values fell within the expected range of NO3 produced by nitrification of reduced N forms such as poultry manure N and NH4 fertilizers, and had a similar range ofδ18O values as NO3 in the upper part of the unsaturated zone below raspberry fields and beneath former manure piles. Theδ15N-NO3 andδ18O-NO3 data confirmed that NO3 in the aquifer was predominantly derived from poultry manure and to a lesser extent from synthetic fertilizers. Theδ18O-NO3 data further suggested the nitrification process occurred mainly in the summer months, with the soil NO3 produced subsequently flushed into the aquifer during fall recharge. Theδ15N-NO3andδ18O-NO3 data conclusively indicated that no significant bacterial denitrification is taking place in the Abbotsford aquifer.  相似文献

Recent experimental studies have shown that the rates of Al–Si order-disorder and interdiffusion in alkali feldspars at high pressures under dry conditions increase dramatically in the approximate pressure range 7–14 kb, depending on temperature and feldspar composition (Goldsmith 1987, 1988). Enhancement of Al–Si interdiffusion rates is ascribed to the involvement of hydrogen, but the species of hydrogen involved is undetermined.A simple kinetic analysis of the data of Goldsmith (1987) on disordering of dry albite at 800°–950° C and 6–24 kb in the solid media press is consistent with the NaCl pressure cell acting as a proton donor by enhancing dissociation of water in the pressure medium, generating a high in the experimental environment. The rate constant for disordering of albite is found to increase linearly with the estimated experimental and with the density of aqueous salt solution, implicating H+ as the rate-enhancing species.Further experimental studies confirm the importance of . At 16 kb and 850° C, dry albite in sealed Pt capsules in a NaCl cell containing tantalum powder (which reduces H2O to H2) remains highly ordered over the same time that complete disordering would occur in the absence of Ta. H2 cannot therefore be the rate-enhancing species. At 1 kb and 850° C, the extent of Al–Si disorder in albite in direct contact with various NaCl–H2O solutions increases from partially disordered for pure H2O to completely disordered for saturated aqueous NaCl solution, giving strong support to the proton model. SIMS scanning ion imaging of albite run products demonstrates conclusively that solution-reprecipitation is not responsible for enhanced disordering rates.Results of disordering experiments in the solid media apparatus cannot be duplicated in Ar gas media internally-heated pressure vessels, even with the same experimental configuration around the albite-bearing capsules, due to the different proton-buffering capacities of the solid and gas media apparatus.  相似文献

Almost all the oil and gas reservoirs developed in marine sedimentary strata of China have undergone processes of multi-phase reservoir formation and later modification. The irregular reservoirs are classified into three types as the Naxi, Tahe and Renqiu ones, increasing successively in the development degree of karstificated pores and fissures and the connection degree of independent reservoirs. In these reservoirs, the unity in the fluid feature, pressure and oil-gas-water interface also increases successively from the Naxi to the Renqiu type. The main body of Ordovician reservoirs of the Tahe Oilfield in the Tarim Basin is a network pool rather than a stratified, massive, stratigraphically-unconformed or weathering-crust one. The fluid nature of oil, gas and water, the interface positions and the pressures, as well as the dynamic conditions of fluids within the reservoirs during the production are all different from those in stratified or massive oil and gas reservoirs. The upper greenschist - lower amphibolite facies, argillaceous to chemical-exhalative metasedimentary sequence of the Mesoarchaean Ghattihosahalli Schist Belt (GHSB), southern India, has been examined with a special focus on the paragenesis and solid solution characteristics of barian feldspars and associated dioctahedral Ba-Cr-bearing micas. Barian feldspars occur as untwinned porphyroblasts in a recrystallized finely banded matrix of barite, quartz and minor white mica. Idioblastic celsian (Cls98-76Or2-20Ab1-8) and hyalophane (Cls55-39Or35-51Ab10) predate the greenschist-facies foliation, whereas xenoblastic hyalophane (Cls44-35Or45-59Ab8–17) and mantles on celsian (Cls45-35Or42-60Ab13-5) as well as xenoblastic barian K-feldspar (Cls6Or90Ab2) postdate the last fabric-defining event. The preservation of extremely complex zoning patterns down to the micron-scale shows that diffusional homogenization did not operate at fluid-present low to medium-grade conditions (350–550 °C, 3–5 kb). Microstructures indicate that at these conditions barian feldspars deform exclusively by brittle fracturing and do not undergo recrystallization. Barian feldspar compositions confirm the positive correlation of Na-content with temperature and the existence of a narrow asymmetric compositional gap (Cls90-85?Cls55, ~350 °C) which probably closes at lower amphibolite facies conditions (Xc ~Cls75; Tc ~550 °C). White micas are solid solutions of the end-members muscovite, ganterite (Ba0.5?K0.5)Al2(Al1.5Si2.5)O10(OH)2, paragonite, celadonite with a significant substitution of [VI]Al by Cr. Zoning is a common feature with cores being enriched in Ba. The data document extensive Ba substitution for K from muscovite to ganterite, exclusively controlled by the coupled substitution [XII]K + [IV]Si ? [XII]Ba + [IV]Al and strongly dependent on bulk composition. The extent of solid solution from (Ms+Gnt) towards paragonite and celadonite end-members is controlled by the miscibility gap in the (Ms+Gnt)–Pg–Cel pseudoternary, with the Pg-substitution depending on temperature and the Cel-substitution on pressure. [IV]Si values between 3.1 and 3.3 in Ba-poor micas indicate minimum pressures of chemical equilibration in the order of 3–5 kbar, while the most sodian compositions of low-celadonite micas provide an upper temperature estimate of ~550 °C, consistent with P-T estimates for assemblages of metapelites (500–550 °C, 4–5 kb).  相似文献

Since the coexistence of the Cretaceous and Palaeocene was ascertained in the Hengyang Basin of Hunan in the middle of the 1960's, the Cretaceous and Tertiary boundary has been discussed in several papers, but it still remains controversal. A number of different impurities are located in the open channels of natural beryl crystals. The rare Maxixe beryl contains an unusual amount of NO2. The isoelectronic CO2 radical is found in the irradiated Maxixe-type beryl. The NO2 radicals are distributed in the Be–Al plane of the crystal, with the nitrogen atom close to the oxygens of the beryl cavity wall. These oxygens repel the negative CO2 radical, which is located at the center of the beryl cavity and rotates around its O–O axis, which is parallel to the crystal c-axis. When there is a nearby alkali ion at the center of the beryl channel, it reorients the CO2 radical so that its bisector is parallel to the c-axis and points toward the positive ion. Different signals are analyzed for Li+, Na+, and another counter-ion, which probably is Cs+. The related NO3 and CO3 radicals are the color centers in the investigated deep blue beryls. The slow decay of the color, which makes these beryls useless as gem stones, is related to the decay of the hydrogen atoms which are present in these crystals. Evidence is given that NO3 is created in Maxixe beryl by a natural process, while CO3 in Maxixe-type beryl has been created by irradiation. The temperature dependence of the EPR signals of these two radicals was investigated, but a definitive proof that they rotate at the center of the beryl cavity could not be given. Arsenic is the 20th most abundant element in the Earth crust. Humans are exposed to naturally occurring and anthropogenic sources of arsenic compounds in the environment. A wide variety of adverse health effects have been attributed to chronic exposure to high levels of arsenic. More than two-dozen arsenic compounds (species) are present in the environment and in biological systems. The various arsenic species have dramatically different behavior and toxicity. This presentation briefly describes arsenic speciation analysis, human exposure to and metabolism of arsenic species. Environmental issues on arsenic in Canada are briefly discussed. These include (1) the arsenic waste left from previous gold mining and smelting activities; (2) the domestic use of wood treated with chromated copper arsenate; and (3) use of well water as the source of drinking water by approximately one third of the Canadian population.  相似文献

This study focused on the geochemical distribution patterns and ecological effects of Cd and other heavy metals such as As, Hg, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn in rock, soil, water, sediment and crops in the area of the Three-Gorges Reservoir within Chongqing, and aimed at the protection of ecological environment and rational application of the local lands. This study found that the metals of Cd, Hg and Pb presented pollution in the surface environment along the Yangtze River, that is Cd〉Hg〉Pb (Cu)〉Zn〉As〉Ni〉Cr. The pollution of Cd in sediment was mainly attributable to the regional black shales, and partly to the urban sewage and garbage. The geochemical modes of metals in the sediment varied. Cr, Hg, Ni, and Pb mainly existed as residues, and Cd as carbonate. Cd exited as a high proportion in the modes of ion-exchange, carbonate, and iron-manganese oxidation, up to 63 percent. The contents of heavy metals in soiland sediment were correlated to the host clay minerals, such as illite, montmorillonite, kaolinite and chlorite. It is shown that Cd was transported with clay minerals in the Yangtze River over long distance and formed the regional anomaly. In the abnormal area of Jianping in Wushan County, higher Cd contents are reported in the local crops and local villagers' hairs than from the background areas.  相似文献

Rare earth element (REE) concentrations in alkaline lakes, circumneutral pH groundwaters, and an acidic freshwater lake were determined along with the free carbonate, free phosphate, and free sulfate ion concentrations. These parameters were used to evaluate the saturation state of these waters with respect to REE phosphate and carbonate precipitates. Our activity product estimates indicate that the alkaline lake waters and groundwaters are approximately saturated with respect to the REE phosphate precipitates but are significantly undersaturated with respect to REE carbonate and sulfate precipitates. On the other hand, the acidic lake waters are undersaturated with respect to REE sulfate, carbonate, and phosphate precipitates. Although carbonate complexes tend to dominate the speciation of the REEs in neutral and alkaline waters, our results indicate that REE phosphate precipitates are also important in controlling REE behavior. More specifically, elevated carbonate ion concentrations in neutral to alkaline natural waters tend to enhance dissolved REE concentrations through the formation of stable REE-carbonate complexes whereas phosphate ions tend to lead to the removal of the REEs from solution in these waters by the formation of REE-phosphate salts. Removal of REEs by precipitation as phosphate phases in the acid lake (pH=3.6) is inconsequential, however, due to extremely low [PO 4 3– ] F concentrations (i.e., 10–23 mol/kg).  相似文献

A simple mechanical model explaining the long-period (about 100-year) variations in the Earth’s rotational velocity is proposed. This model takes into account the gravitational interaction of the mantle with the solid core of the Earth and the fact that the core rotation leads that of the mantle. Well-known Earth parameters provide estimates of the gravitational torque that support the proposed model. The mathematical problem involved reduces to the classical problem of a nonlinear oscillator exposed to a constant torque. The well-known parameters of the core-mantle system result in a stable equilibrium and a stable limiting cycle on the phase cylinder of this oscillator. This equilibrium corresponds to a single angular velocity for the mantle and solid core, with no long-period oscillations in the length of the day. The limiting cycle corresponds to the core rotation leading the mantle rotation. In this case, the ellipsoidality of the gravitationally interacting bodies provides a periodic interchange of kinetic angular momentum between the mantle and solid core that results in long-period variations in the length of the day. The proposed model does not support the formerly widespread opinion that the core rotates more slowly than the mantle.  相似文献

Radon concentrations were continuously monitored in hot spring water in a 200-m-deep well in the Yugano hot spring area, Izu Peninsula, Japan from July to December 1995. Concentrations of Cl and SO42− were measured in the hot spring water about once a month from May to December 1995. The Rn concentrations in the hot spring water increased significantly in September and October 1995, when the 1995 earthquake swarm off the E coast of the Izu Peninsula occurred at a distance of about 30 km from the observation well. The 1995 earthquake swarm began on 11 September and became most active from the end of September to the beginning of October. The Rn concentration rose gradually from 8 September, 3 days before the onset of the swarm activity, increasing by about 50% by 17 September. It remained high in October but had returned to normal by the end of November. However, Cl and SO42− concentrations doubled suddenly from 22 to 23 September and remained high until the end of November. A good correlation between Cl and SO42− concentrations suggests the same mechanism for their anomalous increases, probably mixing of water with high Cl and SO42− concentrations caused by crustal deformation related to the seismic swarm activity. However, the anomalous increase in Rn concentration, which began 15 days before these anion increases, cannot be explained by the same water mixing mechanism. A possible mechanism for the anomalous Rn increase is the formation of microcracks caused by compressional stress, which preceded the onset of the earthquake swarm.  相似文献

The Montardone mélange (Mm) is a chaotic, block-in-matrix unit outcropping in the Montebaranzone syncline in the northern Apennines. The Mm occurs in the uppermost part of the Termina Fm, the Middle–Late Miocene interval of a succession deposited in a wedge-top slope basin (Epiligurian succession). The Mm is closely associated with bodies of authigenic carbonates, characterized by negative values of δ13C (from ?18.22 to ?39.05 ‰ PDB) and chemosynthetic benthic fauna (lucinid and vesicomyid bivalves). In this paper, we propose that the Mm is a mud volcano originated by the post-depositional reactivation and rising of a stratigraphically lower mud-rich mass transport body (Canossa–Val Tiepido sedimentary mélange or olistostrome) triggered by fluid overpressure. We base our conclusion on (1) the Mm pierces the entire Termina Fm and older Epiligurian units and represents the direct continuation of the underlying Canossa–Val Tiepido mélange; (2) the geometry and facies distribution of the Montebaranzone sandstone body, which are compatible with a confined basin controlled by the rising of the Mm; (3) the systematic presence of large-scale (lateral extension 300–400 m) seep-carbonates associated with the mélange, suggesting a persistent gas-enriched fluid vent from the ascending overpressured mud; (4) blocks and clasts sourced from the Mm, hosted by the authigenic carbonates, conveyed by ascending mud and gas-enriched fluids. The Mm represents one of the few fossil examples of reactivation of a basin-scale sedimentary mélange (olistostrome); a three-stage model showing mechanisms of Mm raising is proposed.  相似文献

Characteristics of deformation in the thrust belt and sequence stratigraphic framework in the foreland basin, structural features of the basin margin, and the episodic thrusting are studied in this paper by combining the eastern Qilian thrust belt and the Late Triassic foreland basin on the southwestern margin of Ordos. On this basis, a geological model and a mechanical model of coupling mechanism were established for the pair of thrust belt and foreland basin, and the subsidence and deposition process of the foreland basin were simulated on given parameters.  相似文献

This is a 4-year longitudinal study to evaluate changes to the environment and exposure of young children associated with the introduction of methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT) into Australia in 2000. The cohort includes 57 females and 56 males; age range of 0.29 to 3.9 years. Samples are collected every 6 months from children in residences located at varying distances from major traffic thoroughfares in Sydney. Environmental samples: air, house and day care dustfall, soil, dust sweepings and gasoline. Samples from children: blood, urine, handwipes prior to and after playing outdoors, and a 6-day duplicate diet. All samples are analyzed for a suite of 20 elements using ICP-MS. Results are presented for the first three 6-month sampling periods for Pb and Mn. For dustfall accumulation, there was no significant change over the 3 sampling periods (time) for Pb or Mn, and a positive relationship between ‘traffic exposure' (traffic volume and proximity to the road) and Pb but not Mn. For handwipes, Pb and Mn in wipes taken from children after playing outdoors were usually significantly greater than for wipes taken prior to playing. There was no significant association between Pb or Mn in handwipes with traffic exposure. Dustfall accumulation was a significant predictor for Pb in the handwipes, and dust sweepings were a significant predictor of Mn in handwipes.  相似文献

Extensive volcanism is one of the important features of Cenozoic geology in China.Based on temporal-spatial distribution,the volcanism was associated with three major different geological settings:1)the continental rift basalts in Northeast and North China;2)the tension-fault basalts on the continental margins of Southeast China; and 3) the collision-zone high-K volcanics in the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau and its vicinities.The characteristics of “depletion in the south and enrichment in the north“of the China continental mantle are strongly supported by isotopic evidence.The Cenozoic continental cal characters,into the following geochemical provinces:1)the depleted mantle in South China;2)the primary mantle in Northeast and NorthChina; 3)the hybrid and transi-tional mantle in the region of Shandong ,Anhui,Jiangsu and northern Zhejiang;4)the depleted mantle around the Bohai Bay and the Lower Liaohe River;5)the K-metasomatic enriched mantle in the northern part of Northeast China;and 6)the re-cycled enriched mantle in the ancient subduction zone in the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau and its surround-ings.These geochemical characteristics on a regional scale must be a reflection of the nature of lithosphere evolution.  相似文献

The Ordovician Changtu Fauna is recently discovered in the Xia' ertai and Hulan Groups in northernLiaoning-central Jilin. The fauna, containing 10 genera and 14 species (including 3 new genera, 9 new speciesand an unidentified species), is closely related in evolution with the Early Cambrian Qinghezhen Fauna. Thediscovery of this fauna is significant to the study on the age of the strata, Ordovician biostratigraphy and geo-logical evolution of the tectonostratigraphical terrane on the northern margin of the Sino-Korean plate.  相似文献
