We present a low‐cost, reliable method for long‐term in situ autonomous monitoring of subsurface resistivity and temperature in a shallow, moderately heterogeneous subsurface. Probes, to be left in situ, were constructed at relatively low cost with an electrode spacing of 5 cm. Once installed, these were wired to the CR‐1000 Campbell Scientific Inc. datalogger at the surface to electrically image infiltration fronts in the shallow subsurface. This system was constructed and installed in June 2005 to collect apparent resistivity and temperature data from 96 subsurface electrodes set to a pole‐pole resistivity array pattern and 14 thermistors at regular intervals of 30 cm through May of 2008. From these data, a temperature and resistivity relationship was determined within the vadose zone (to a depth of ~1 m) and within the saturated zone (at depths between 1 and 2 m). The high vertical resolution of the data with resistivity measurements on a scale of 5‐cm spacing coupled with surface precipitation measurements taken at 3‐min intervals for a period of roughly 3 years allowed unique observations of infiltration related to seasonal changes. Both the vertical resistivity instrument probes and the data logger system functioned well for the duration of the test period and demonstrated the capability of this low‐cost monitoring system.  相似文献

Solid‐contacted Potentiometric Electrodes for Measurements of Sulfate Ions in Aqueous Solutions A solid‐contact electrode for potentiometric measurement of sulfate ions in aqueous solutions was developed and examined. The electrode is based on a PVC membrane which contains the ionophore 3‐decyl‐1,5,8‐triazacyclodecan‐2,4‐dione (DTADD). Instead of the usual inner fluid junction, a polypyrrole layer applied on the inner side of the PVC membrane was employed as inner solid contact. The performance of this electrode was compared to solid‐state sulfate‐selective electrodes with the ionophore α,α′‐bis(N′‐phenylthioureylene)‐m‐xylene (BTH) and to electrodes in the coated‐wire configuration. For the parameters sensitivity, selectivity, and long‐term stability, electrodes with the DTADD ionophore show improved properties. In the sulfate concentration range of 5·10–5...10–2 mol L–1 the slope of the response is –(26.8 ± 0.5) mV/decade. The new solid contact sulfate electrodes showed a very low drift of the electrode potential within a period of 150 days when the electrode was stored in 10–2 M Na2SO4. In Na2SO4 solutions of the pH range of 4...9 the electrode potentials were constant. The 95% response time was about 10 s when the sulfate concentration was changed from 10–4 mol L–1 to 10–3 mol L–1. The selectivity with DTADD ionophore relating to the nitrate ions is higher than the selectivity with BTH. Improvements are also made in comparison with sulfate‐selective electrodes described in the literature which contain other ionophores with fluid inner reference electrolytes.  相似文献

长周期大地电磁测深需要观测最长周期为几万秒的大地电磁场信号,这要求用于测量电场信号的不极化电极具有很小的极差,以及至少长达1—2个月的稳定时间,普通的不极化电极不能满足要求。通过改进电极电解质配方和电极结构,试制出铅-氯化铅不极化电极。测量结果表明,该电极具有极差小、稳定时间长、使用寿命长、维护简单等优良特性。在山东菏泽等地的野外实验表明,该类不极化电极能够很好地观测几万秒的长周期信号。同等条件下,其性能优于国外同类产品,达到预期目标。  相似文献

Laboratory measurements of soil samples are necessary to assess the effect of mineralogy, grain size distribution, moisture content, and electrolyte composition on the resistivity spectrum of soil material. Laboratory results are also required for the interpretation of field data. Induced polarization phenomena in glacial soils are poorly understood and so far no convenient laboratory techniques are available for its measurement. Coarse grain size and the need to measure unsaturated samples and to monitor the homogeneity of the sample require a sample holder–electrode construction that differs from those presented in Clay mineral Studies. This study presents a spectral induced polarization laboratory system that is suitable for measuring fine- and coarse-grained and both saturated and unsaturated soil samples. The noise caused by the electrode–electrolyte interface is studied in detail. It is shown that easy-to-use platinum or acid-free steel potential electrodes are convenient over a broad frequency band ranging from 0.016Hz up to more than 1000 Hz. The laboratory experiments and comparisons between laboratory and field results also indicate that sampling and sample packing procedures have only a minor influence on the phase spectrum of glacial soils.  相似文献

Consideration is given to the use of a configuration of four electrodes set in a square array for resistivity measurements. It is found that, by passing current successively between different pairs of electrodes, an apparent resistivity can be determined which is both more sensitive to the position of the array centre and less dependent on orientation than the measures usually obtained with colinear arrays of electrodes. At the same time the observations made enable the degree of the departure of local conditions from conditions of lateral homogeneity to be assessed. Theoretical and practical examples of the use of this electrode system are given and the use of the system both as a tool in mapping and in depth investigations is considered. It is shown that provided electrode spacings are suitably arranged the results of a probe carried out using the square array can be interpreted by conventional methods. The system is shown to have particular advantages in the investigation of lateral resistivity variations and the reduced dependence on orientation makes possible the recasting of interpretation data in an orientationally invariant form with a consequent drastic reduction in the number of type curves required for a particular problem.  相似文献

Numerical simulations were used to identify and evaluate optimum electrode configurations and approaches for electrokinetic in situ chemical oxidation (EK‐ISCO) remediation of low‐permeability sediments. A newly developed groundwater and EK flow and reactive transport numerical model was used to conduct two‐dimensional scenario simulations of the coverage of an injected oxidant, permanganate, and the oxidation of a typical organic contaminant (tetrachloroethene, PCE). For linear configurations of vertical electrodes, the spacing of same‐polarity electrodes is recommended to be about one‐third to one‐quarter of the anode–cathode spacing. Greater coverage could also be achieved by locating additional oxidant injection wells at the divergence of the electric field in linear electrode configurations. Horizontal electrodes allowed greater contact between the injected permanganate and PCE and resulted in faster degradation of PCE compared to vertical electrodes. Pulsed oxidant injection, closer electrode spacing, and electric field reversal also resulted in faster EK‐ISCO remediation.  相似文献

As high-voltage, direct-current (HVDC) electrical power transmission technology advances, the siting and design of the grounded return electrodes become critical factors. Electrode sites should be chosen where surrounding geologic conditions will not unfavorably channel large earth currents and harmfully affect nearby populations. An optimum site allows direct contact between the electrode and a large volume of a stable, low-resistivity material. A saturated alluvial zone between dry surface soils and an underlying crystalline bedrock is an ideal material for containing the current flow from the electrode.
A hydrogeologic investigation was conducted to delineate the saturated zone in several alluvial valleys in the southwestern desert region. Regional ground water flow directions, water quality, and seasonal fluctuations of the water table elevations were determined. The structural shape and topography of the crystalline basement beneath the valleys were interpreted from gravity data. Iterative forward-modeling of the data provided a low-cost means of deducing the volume of the lightweight alluvium. Electrical resistivity surveys were completed to measure the lateral and vertical variations in soil resistivities throughout the valleys. The geophysical data were used to extend the known hydrologic information into areas with no wells.
Composite models of the saturated zones in each valley were produced by integrating gravity interpretations with hydrologic and resistivity results. The composite models were used to predict current density in the ground that would be associated with a HVDC electrode. This methodology proved to be a cost-effective means of siting electrodes in a suitable geologic environment that would minimize their detrimental effects.  相似文献

The aim of the technique described here is to follow displacement of a NaCl trace (brine), simulating pollution, in extent and time, from a river towards water boreholes in operation. 30–50 V electrodes, monitored simultaneously through passage of a direct current, provide the position of the NaCl “cloud” and in what time period it has appeared at each electrode in relation to the initial ground conditions prior to introducing the brine. Preferred seepage paths, foci of pollution flow, are thus exposed. Techniques to reduce the time needed to carry out 3D resistivity surveys with a moderate number (25 to 100) of electrodes and the computing time required to interpret the data have been developed. The electrodes in a 3D survey are normally arranged in a square grid and the pole-pole array is used to make the potential measurements. The number of measurements required can be reduced to about one-third of the maximum possible number without seriously degrading the resolution of the resulting inversion model by making measurements along the horizontal, vertical and 45° diagonal rows of electrodes passing through the current electrode. The smoothness-constrained least-squares inversion method is used for the data interpretation. The computing time required by this technique can be greatly reduced by using a homogeneous half-space as the starting model so that the Jacobian matrix of partial derivatives can be calculated analytically. A quasi-Newton updating method is then used to estimate the partial derivatives for subsequent iterations. This inversion technique has been tested on synthetic and field data where a satisfactory model is obtained using a modest amount of computer time. On an 80486DX2/66 microcomputer, it takes about 20 minutes to invert the data from a 7 by 7 electrode survey grid. using the techniques described below, 3D resistivity surveys and data inversion can be carried out using commercially available field equipment and an inexpensive microcomputer.  相似文献

An infinitely resistive/conductive horizontal bed is assumed in an otherwise homogeneous and isotropic half space. Schlumberger, three electrode, and unipole profiles are computed at right angles to the strike of the bed. The Schwarz-Christoffel method of conformal transformation and numerical methods of solving non-linear differential equations are used to solve the boundary value problem. It is observed that (i) the three electrode system is the most sensitive gradient electrode configurations for electrical profiling, (ii) the apparent resistivities for Schlumberger, three electrode, and unipole methods become maximum when the depth of the bed is 0.06 L, 0.1 L, and 0.055 L for a resistive bed and minimum when depths are 0.085 L, 0.04 L-0.02 L and indeterminate for conductive beds, respectively, (iii) the limiting depths of detection (defined in the text) by Schlumberger, three electrode, and unipole configurations are respectively 0.9 L, 6.6 L and 2.0 L for resistive beds and 0.58 L, 1.17 L and 1.5 L for conductive beds. Resistivity monitoring surveys are used to detect temporal changes in the subsurface using repeated measurements over the same site. The positions of the electrodes are typically measured at the start of the survey program and possibly at occasional later times. In areas with unstable ground, such as landslide‐prone slopes, the positions of the electrodes can be displaced by ground movements. If this occurs at times when the positions of the electrodes are not directly measured, they have to be estimated. This can be done by interpolation or, as in recent developments, from the resistivity data using new inverse methods. The smoothness‐constrained least squares optimisation method can be modified to include the electrode positions as additional unknown parameters. The Jacobian matrices with the sensitivity of the apparent resistivity measurements to changes in the electrode positions are then required by the optimisation method. In this paper, a fast adjoint‐equation method is used to calculate the Jacobian matrices required by the least squares method to reduce the calculation time. In areas with large near‐surface resistivity contrasts, the inversion routine sometimes cannot accurately distinguish between electrode displacements and subsurface resistivity variations. To overcome this problem, the model for the initial time‐lapse dataset (with accurately known electrode positions) is used as the starting model for the inversion of the later‐time dataset. This greatly improves the accuracy of the estimated electrode positions compared to the use of a homogeneous half‐space starting model. In areas where the movement of the electrodes is expected to occur in a fixed direction, the method of transformations can be used to include this information as an additional constraint in the optimisation routine.  相似文献

从电流守恒条件出发,得到了两个积分方程.其中第一个和在1964年提出的相同,它的未知函数是边界面上的隐电流源分布密度;第二个积分方程的未知函数则是电位函数本身. 在的文章以及本文作者的另一篇文章中,供电电极和测量电极都被当成点电极处理.用这种方法来处理电位电极系和梯度电极系已不够准确,用来处理三侧向或双侧向等具有大电极的电极系则完全无能为力. 测井中所用的电极系是包着金属外皮的绝缘心棒,金属外皮就是电极.本文提出了处理这种电极系的方法.结果表明,第二个积分方程在处理这种电极系时有明显优点.  相似文献

A validation experiment, carried out in a scaled field setting, was attempted for the long electrode electrical resistivity tomography method in order to demonstrate the performance of the technique in imaging a simple buried target. The experiment was an approximately 1/17 scale mock‐up of a region encompassing a buried nuclear waste tank on the Hanford site. The target of focus was constructed by manually forming a simulated plume within the vadose zone using a tank waste simulant. The long electrode results were compared to results from conventional point electrodes on the surface and buried within the survey domain. Using a pole‐pole array, both point and long electrode imaging techniques identified the lateral extents of the pre‐formed plume with reasonable fidelity but the long electrode method was handicapped in reconstructing vertical boundaries. The pole‐dipole and dipole‐dipole arrays were also tested with the long electrode method and were shown to have the least favourable target properties, including the position of the reconstructed plume relative to the known plume and the intensity of false positive targets. The poor performance of the pole‐dipole and dipole‐dipole arrays was attributed to an inexhaustive and non‐optimal coverage of data at key electrodes, as well as an increased noise for electrode combinations with high geometric factors. However, when comparing the model resolution matrix among the different acquisition strategies, the pole‐dipole and dipole‐dipole arrays using long electrodes were shown to have significantly higher average and maximum values within the matrix than any pole‐pole array. The model resolution describes how well the inversion model resolves the subsurface. Given the model resolution performance of the pole‐dipole and dipole‐dipole arrays, it may be worth investing in tools to understand the optimum subset of randomly distributed electrode pairs to produce maximum performance from the inversion model.  相似文献

Electrical resistivity tomography was used in order to explore an experimental site of the LaSalle Beauvais Polytechnic Institute (France). The test was conducted along a profile line of 315 m length, using 64 electrodes deployed at an inter‐electrode spacing of 5 m, and the data were recorded using gradient, Wenner and pole–dipole arrays. The performance of plate electrodes (non‐conventional flat‐based) is compared with the performance of peak electrodes (conventional spike). The hydrogeophysical investigation of the chalk aquifer system of Beauvais shows that the performance of plate electrodes is satisfactory, leading to inversions of small root‐mean‐square errors. Peak and the plate electrodes were tested before and after injection of a salt tracer in the piezometer of the experimental site. The study demonstrates the usefulness of plate electrodes (efficient, less time consuming) and the possibility of aquifer characterization by a salt tracer. —A large number of geophysical applications need long-term telluric recordings. In order to realise it correctly, the use of very stable electrodes is necessary. The study of the potential variations of Pb-PbCl2 electrodes as a function of both the ionic composition and the pH of its electrolyte allows one to chose the optimal working criteria. The best stability and the minimum noise for the potential are obtained for a solution saturated in both salts PbCl2 and KCl, or PbCl2 and NaCl, in the presence of additional non-dissolved salts, with a pH from 4 to 5. The study of the salts diffusion between the inside of the electrode and the outside medium allows one to compute the time span over which the potential remains stable (tD time of dissaturation), and to know how to increase it. Two solutions are possible. The first one is to increase the electrode length, because tD is proportional to the length squared. The second one is to reduce the exchanges of salts with the external medium, by using an electrode with a narrow channel. In this case, tD is proportional to the quantity of non-dissolved salt in the electrode and to the internal electrical resistance of the electrode.
