The dynamic equations of motion of asymmetric offshore platforms under three different environmental conditions:seismic action, wave action and their combination are established in this paper. In establishing these motion equations, three typical eccentricity types including mass eccentricity, rigidity eccentricity and their combination were considered,as are eccentricities that occur un-idirectionally and bi-directionally. The effects of the eccentricity type, the dynamic characteristics and the environmental conditions on the torsional coupling response of platforms are investigated and compared. An effort has also been made to analyze the inffluence of accidental eccentricity on asymmetric platforms with different eccentricity in two horizontally orthogonal directions. The results are given in terms of non-dimensional parameters, accounting for the uncoupled torsional to lateral frequency ratio. Numerical results reveal that the eccentricity type has a great inffluence on the torsionally coupled response under different environmental conditions. Therefore,it is necessary to consider the combination of earthquake and wave action in the seismic response analysis of some offshore platforms.

The effects of horizontal components of ground motion on the linear response of torsionally stiff and torsionally flexible systems, on soft and firm soil conditions, are examined. A one‐story, two‐way asymmetric structural system is used, subjected to uncorrelated ground motion components along their principal directions. Spectral densities for ground accelerations in firm and soft soils are modeled based on recorded data from large intensity Mexican earthquakes. It is shown that for firm soils, in general, these effects are important in the case of torsionally flexible systems that are stiff under translation, or for torsionally stiff systems that are flexible in translation. The percentage combination rules usually specified in seismic design codes are assessed against the dynamic response. Such combination rules can result in overly conservative design forces or underestimated design forces, particularly for torsionally flexible structures. Given the relative magnitude of the response to each ground motion component, it was found that using different percentage values in the combination rules has no significant effect on improving the estimation of the total response. A wavelet-based formulation has been presented in this paper for the stochastic analysis of a linear multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) classically damped system subjected to earthquake ground motion. The ground motion has been modelled as a non-stationary process (both in amplitude and frequency) using wavelets. Closed-form expressions of the moments of the instantaneous Power Spectral Density Function (PSDF) of the response have been derived and used to predict the statistics of the response peak of any desired order. For illustration of the formulation, an example torsionally coupled multistoried building has been considered along with the twenty synthetically generated time-histories corresponding to an example ground motion process. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The rocking response of large flexible structures to earthquakes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The rocking response of structures subjected to strong ground motions is a problem of ‘several scales’. While small structures are sensitive to acceleration pulses acting successively, large structures are more significantly affected by coherent low frequency components of ground motion. As a result, the rocking response of large structures is more stable and orderly, allowing effective isolation from the ground without imminent danger of overturning. This paper aims to characterize and predict the maximum rocking response of large and flexible structures to earthquakes using an idealized structural model. To achieve this, the maximum rocking demand caused by different earthquake records was evaluated using several ground motion intensity measures. Pulse-type records which typically have high peak ground velocity and lower frequency content caused large rocking amplitudes, whereas non-pulse type records caused random rocking motion confined to small rocking amplitudes. Coherent velocity pulses were therefore identified as the primary cause of significant rocking motion. Using a suite of pulse-type ground motions, it was observed that idealized wavelets fitted to velocity pulses can adequately describe the rocking response of large structures. Further, a parametric analysis demonstrates that pulse shape parameters affect the maximum rocking response significantly. Based on these two findings, a probabilistic analysis method is proposed for estimating the maximum rocking demand to pulse-type earthquakes. The dimensionless demand maps, produced using these methods, have predictive power in the near-field provided that pulse period and amplitude can be estimated a priori. Use of this method within a probabilistic seismic demand analysis framework is briefly discussed.  相似文献

Fukushima nuclear accident caused widespread concern of earthquake initiated severe accident. Under this background, China nuclear utilities carried out research and application of seismic margin assessment(SMA)approach to evaluate the seismic margin of the existing nuclear power plants(NPP)by different spectra shape of seismic margin earthquake(SME). By reviewing the method used to determine SME of operational NPP in central and eastern United States(CEUS), this paper analyzed the seismic hazard characteristic of China NPP sites, contrasted the design basis ground motion between NPP in CEUS and China, and suggested giving priority to evaluating the seismic margin of operational NPP that adopted the improved second generation technology for the urgency and importance of assessment on the actual seismic capacity of NPP. Comparing RG1.60 spectrum to normalized site-specific SL-2 level acceleration spectra, we found that some normalized spectra overtook the RG1.60's in high frequency range, so it is not always adequate to scale RG1.60 spectrum to evaluate the seismic margin for sites of the improved second generation NPP. We selected a sample site whose site-specific SL-2 level ground motion is close to the standard design of improved second generation NPP(0.2g scaled RG1.60 spectrum)to determine the seismic margin earthquake by probabilistic seismic hazard analysis method of the sample site. Compared to the given PGA(0.3g)scaled scenario earthquake ground motions and the uniform hazard response spectrum(UHRS), whose PGA is 0.3g to PGA(0.3g)scaled standard spectra(median NUREG/CR0098 spectrum and RG1.60 spectrum), the results demonstrated that uniform hazard response spectrum and scaled scenario earthquake ground motions are both significantly higher than the PGA scaled median NUREG/CR0098 spectrum, and all the three spectra are enveloped by PGA scaled RG1.60 spectrum. Then, this paper suggests adopting the uniform hazard response spectrum or scenario earthquake ground motions to evaluate the seismic margin of improved second generation NPP beyond site SL-2 ground motion; and to evaluate the seismic margin of improved second generation NPP beyond standard design, we recommend to use PGA scaled RG1.60 spectrum.  相似文献

A methodology is proposed to determine design earthquakes for site-specific studies such as the siting of critical structures (power plants, waste disposals, large dams, etc.), strategic structures (fire stations, military commands, hospitals, etc.), or for seismic microzoning studies, matching the results of probabilistic seismic hazard analyses. This goal is achieved by calculating the source contribution to hazard and the magnitude–distance deaggregation, showing that, varying the selected frequency and the level of hazard, the reference earthquakes are changed as a result. A procedure is then adopted to minimize the residuals between the uniform hazard spectrum (target motion) and the design earthquake spectrum, to provide a specific earthquake scenario encompassing all the frequencies of the target motion. Finally, some considerations on the use and the influence exerted by ground motion uncertainty (σ) on hazard deaggregation are outlined.  相似文献

Coulomb damping can be utilized effectively to reduce the dynamic response of structures subjected to seismic ground motions. To activate this damping, some parts of a vibrating structure are allowed to slide at rough interfaces. The dynamic response of structures provided with sliding interfaces at the base, between a floor slab and frame and in the cross bracings of a frame has been examined recently. In this paper, a simple slab sliding system provided with a spring to introduce a recovery mechanism and to reduce the sliding displacement requirement for low frequency structures has been examined. The equations of motion for this system are developed. An approach is presented to solve these coupled equations for earthquake induced ground motions. Structures with varying frequency and friction characterisics are considered and the numerical results are presented in response spectrum form. It is observed that, in low frequency structures, provision of a rather weak spring can reduce the sliding displacement requirements without significantly increasing the forces in the supporting frame and the acceleration input to supported secondary systems.  相似文献

A method is presented for stochastic modelling of a design earthquake by a power spectral density function for seismic analysis of structures. The method can be adopted with information currently available in the form of design response spectra for earthquake motion. Accurate seismic responses of structures can be easily obtained using such stochastic models. The methods for accurate response analysis of structures with closely spaced modes and for generation of floor response spectra of a building using a prescribed ground response spectrum directly are also presented. The hypothesis that a design earthquake can be modelled by a power spectral density function is used only implicitly in developing these methods.  相似文献

An Erratum has been published for this article in Earthquake Engng. Struct. Dyn. 2004; 33:1429. Based on structural dynamics theory, the modal pushover analysis (MPA) procedure retains the conceptual simplicity of current procedures with invariant force distribution, now common in structural engineering practice. The MPA procedure for estimating seismic demands is extended to unsymmetric‐plan buildings. In the MPA procedure, the seismic demand due to individual terms in the modal expansion of the effective earthquake forces is determined by non‐linear static analysis using the inertia force distribution for each mode, which for unsymmetric buildings includes two lateral forces and torque at each floor level. These ‘modal’ demands due to the first few terms of the modal expansion are then combined by the CQC rule to obtain an estimate of the total seismic demand for inelastic systems. When applied to elastic systems, the MPA procedure is equivalent to standard response spectrum analysis (RSA). The MPA estimates of seismic demand for torsionally‐stiff and torsionally‐flexible unsymmetric systems are shown to be similarly accurate as they are for the symmetric building; however, the results deteriorate for a torsionally‐similarly‐stiff unsymmetric‐plan system and the ground motion considered because (a) elastic modes are strongly coupled, and (b) roof displacement is underestimated by the CQC modal combination rule (which would also limit accuracy of RSA for linearly elastic systems). The elastic and inelastic seismic response of plan‐asymmetric regular multi‐storey steel‐frame buildings has been investigated under bi‐directional horizontal ground motions. Symmetric variants of these buildings were designed according to Eurocodes 3 and 8. Asymmetric buildings were created by assuming a mass eccentricity in each of the two principal directions. The torsional response in the elastic and inelastic range is qualitatively similar with the exception of the stiff edge in the strong direction of torsionally stiff buildings and the stiff edge in the weak direction of torsionally flexible buildings. The response is influenced by the intensity of ground motion, i.e. by the magnitude of plastic deformation. In the limiting case of very strong ground motion, the behaviour of initially torsionally stiff and initially torsionally flexible buildings may become qualitatively similar. A decrease in stiffness due to plastic deformations in one direction may substantially influence the behaviour in the orthogonal direction. The response strongly depends on the detailed characteristics of the ground motion. On average, torsional effects are reduced with increasing plastic deformations, unless the plastic deformations are small. Taking into account also the dispersion of results which is generally larger in the inelastic range than in the elastic one, it can be concluded that (a) the amplification of displacements determined by the elastic analysis can be used as a rough estimate also in the inelastic range and (b) any favourable torsional effect on the stiff side of torsionally stiff buildings, which may arise from elastic analysis, may disappear in the inelastic range. The conclusions are limited to fairly regular buildings and subject to further investigations. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The work presented in this paper investigates the effect of the foundation flexibility on the coupled lateral-torsional response of single-storey buildings excited by translational ground motion. The eccentricity between the centre of mass and the centre of resistance is considered to be the only cause of coupling of the lateral and torsional response of the building. The study is confined to the steady-state response of rigidly supported and flexibly supported torsionally coupled buildings subjected to harmonic free-field ground displacement perpendicular to the direction of the eccentricity. In the case of the flexibly supported building the foundation medium is assumed to be an elastic homogeneous isotropic half-space. The effect of the controlling parameters on lateral-torsional coupling is investigated. It is concluded that for a particular range of values of these parameters (representing most cases of actual buildings) their effect on the coupling of lateral and torsional response is not qualitatively affected by increases in the flexibility of the foundation medium.  相似文献

Existing studies for site response analysis in geotechnical earthquake engineering have widely concentrated on the horizontal component of the ground motion. However, strong vertical ground motions have been repeatedly observed, resulting in significant vertical compression damage of engineering structures. Furthermore, for the seismic design of critical structures(e.g. large-scale dams and nuclear power plants), the ground motions in all three directions should be considered. Therefore, there is a need to investigate the site response subjected to the vertical component of the ground motion, especially for the seismic design of critical structures. Consequently, in this study, a numerical program for vertical site response analysis is proposed based on the commonly used analytical transfer function method. The proposed program is then validated against well-documented case studies obtained from the Japanese KiK-net(Kiban Kyoshin network) downhole array monitoring system. Results show that the response spectra at the ground surface are well predicted in the low frequency range(5 Hz), while discrepancies are observed in the high frequency range. However, the high frequency discrepancies do not significantly affect the overall prediction accuracy, as the overall seismic response of geotechnical structures are usually dominated by low frequency vibrations. Furthermore, the limitations in the analysis are also discussed.  相似文献

This paper develops an optimized procedure for the design of torsionally unbalanced structures subjected to earthquake loading, considering both the serviceability and the ultimate limit states. An optimal design eccentricity expression, in the form of design charts, and an optimal overstrength factor equation, are proposed. Results show that the recommended design procedure can result in nearly equal performance of both the rigid edge and the flexible edge elements. For a wide combination of primary system parameters, the responses of both edge elements are consistently lower than, or in the neighbourhood of, the response of the corresponding torsionally balanced reference model. The proposed procedure retains simplicity and can be easily implemented (with certain limitations) in design practice. It also has the added advantages of requiring the structure to be analysed only once for each limit state in each principal direction (as opposed to twice, in existing code torsional provisions), and results in a significantly lower overstrength factor, compared with the overstrength factors corresponding to the torsional provisions of seismic codes in the United States and Canada. The proposed procedure is also applicable to torsionally unbalanced structures with and without transverse resisting elements. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

An important aspect of earthquake loads exerted on extended structures, or structures founded on several foundations, is the spatial variability of the seismic motion. Hence, a rigorous earthquake resistant design of lifeline structures should account for the spatial character of the seismic input, at least in an approximate way. A procedure is proposed which enables addressing the problem of multiply supported structures, subjected to imperfectly correlated seismic excitations, by means of an extension to the response spectrum method. A modified response spectrum model is developed for the design of extended facilities subjected to single and multicomponent ground motion. The modification procedure is based on adjusting each spectral value of the given design response spectrum by means of a correction factor, which depends on the structural properties and on the characteristics of the wave propagation phenomenon. Finally, the theoretical model is validated through digital simulation of seismic ground motion, whereby model predictions are found to be in good agreement with exact results.  相似文献

The objective of this paper is to describe the lessons learned and actions that have been taken related to the seismic design of bridge structures after the Chi-Chi, Taiwan earthquake. Much variable near-fault ground motion data was collected from the rupture of Chelungpu fault during the Chi-Chi earthquake, allowing the seismic response of bridge structures subjected to these near-fault ground motions to be carefully examined. To study the near-fault ground motion effect on bridge seismic design codes, a two-level seismic design of bridge structures was developed and implemented. This design code reflects the near-fault factors in the seismic design forces. Finally, a risk assessment methodology, based on bridge vulnerability, is also developed to assist in decisions for reducing seismic risk due to failure of bridges.

An attempt has been made to explore the general trends in the seismic response of plan‐asymmetric structures without any restrictions imposed by a particular code. Systems with structural elements in both orthogonal directions under bi‐directional excitation were studied. Idealized single‐storey models with bi‐axial eccentricity were employed. The systems were torsionally stiff and, in the majority of cases, mass‐eccentric. The main findings are: in general, inelastic torsional response is qualitatively similar to elastic torsional response. Quantitatively, the torsional effect on the flexible side, expressed as an increase of displacements due to torsion, decreases slightly with increasing plastic deformation, unless the plastic deformations are small. The response on the stiff side generally strongly depends on the effect of several modes of vibration and on the influence of the ground motion in the transverse direction. These influences depend on the structural and ground motion characteristics in both directions. Reduction of displacements due to torsion, typical for elastic torsionally stiff structures, usually decreases with increasing plastic deformations. As an additional effect of large plastic deformations, a flattening of the displacement envelopes in the horizontal plane usually occurs, indicating that torsional effects in the inelastic range are generally smaller than in the elastic range. The dispersion of the results of inelastic torsional response analysis is generally larger than that of elastic analysis. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
