The seismic response of single‐degree‐of‐freedom (SDOF) systems incorporating flag‐shaped hysteretic structural behaviour, with self‐centring capability, is investigated numerically. For a SDOF system with a given initial period and strength level, the flag‐shaped hysteretic behaviour is fully defined by a post‐yielding stiffness parameter and an energy‐dissipation parameter. A comprehensive parametric study was conducted to determine the influence of these parameters on SDOF structural response, in terms of displacement ductility, absolute acceleration and absorbed energy. This parametric study was conducted using an ensemble of 20 historical earthquake records corresponding to ordinary ground motions having a probability of exceedence of 10% in 50 years, in California. The responses of the flag‐shaped hysteretic SDOF systems are compared against the responses of similar bilinear elasto‐plastic hysteretic SDOF systems. In this study the elasto‐plastic hysteretic SDOF systems are assigned parameters representative of steel moment resisting frames (MRFs) with post‐Northridge welded beam‐to‐column connections. In turn, the flag‐shaped hysteretic SDOF systems are representative of steel MRFs with newly proposed post‐tensioned energy‐dissipating connections. Building structures with initial periods ranging from 0.1 to 2.0s and having various strength levels are considered. It is shown that a flag‐shaped hysteretic SDOF system of equal or lesser strength can always be found to match or better the response of an elasto‐plastic hysteretic SDOF system in terms of displacement ductility and without incurring any residual drift from the seismic event. The paper investigates the degree of accuracy achievable when some non‐linear static procedures based on a pushover analysis are used to evaluate the seismic performance. In order to assess the significance of different sources of errors, three types of structural systems are analysed: (i) single‐degree‐of‐freedom (SDOF) systems with different hysteretic behaviour; (ii) shear‐type multi‐degree‐of‐freedom (MDOF) systems with elastic–perfect plastic (EPP) shear force–interstorey drift relationships; (iii) a steel moment‐resisting frame with rigid joints and EPP moment–curvature relationship. In SDOF systems, the source of approximation comes only from the calibration of the demand spectrum, while in MDOF systems some further errors are introduced by the schematization with an equivalent SDOF system. The non‐linear static procedures are compared with rigorous time‐history analyses carried out by considering ten generated earthquake ground motions compatible with the Eurocode 8 elastic spectra. It was found that SDOF systems with longer periods satisfy the equal displacement approximation regardless of the hysteretic model, while hysteresis loops with smaller energy dissipated indicate lower response for shorter periods. This is the opposite of what predicted by the ATC‐40 capacity spectrum method, which underestimates and overestimates, respectively, the actual response of low‐ and high‐ductility systems. Conversely, the inelastic spectrum method proposed by Vidic, Fajfar and Fischinger leads to the most accurate results for all types of structural systems. The analyses carried out on EPP shear‐type frames point out a large concentration of the ductility demand on some storeys. However, such a concentration markedly reduces when some hardening is accounted for. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A new earthquake resistant structural system for multi‐storey frame structures, based on a dual function of its bracing components, is developed. This consists of a hysteretic damper device and a cross‐bracing mechanism with a kinetic closed circuit, working only in tension, so that cable members can be used for this purpose. Solutions are presented regarding the connections' design of three types of structural frame system, that are concerned throughout the study: braced moment free frame, braced moment resisting frame with moment free supports, and with moment resisting supports. The dynamic behaviour of the system is investigated on the basis of an SDOF model, and based on the response spectra method an approximate design approach of the controlled structures is shown. From the time history analysis of the structural systems for the El Centro earthquake the areas of appropriate stiffness relations of the frames to the hysteretic dampers and the cable braces are deduced, so that the energy dissipation of the system may be controlled by the damper‐cable bracing mechanism. Based on the results of these studies, a predesign approach is developed for the implementation of the control system in frame structures. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Hysteretic energy dissipation in a structure during an earthquake is the key factor, besides maximum displacement, related to the amount of damage in it. This energy demand can be accurately computed only through a nonlinear time‐history analysis of the structure subjected to a specific earthquake ground acceleration. However, for multi‐story structures, which are usually modeled as multi‐degree of freedom (MDOF) systems, this analysis becomes computation intensive and time consuming and is not suitable for adopting in seismic design guidelines. An alternative method of estimating hysteretic energy demand on MDOF systems is presented here. The proposed method uses multiple ‘generalized’ or ‘equivalent’ single degree of freedom (ESDOF) systems to estimate hysteretic energy demand on an MDOF system within the context of a ‘modal pushover analysis’. This is a modified version of a previous procedure using a single ESDOF system. Efficiency of the proposed procedure is tested by comparing energy demands based on this method with results from nonlinear dynamic analyses of MDOF systems, as well as estimates based on the previous method, for several ground motion scenarios. Three steel moment frame structures, of 3‐, 9‐, and 20‐story configurations, are selected for this comparison. Bias statistics that show the effectiveness of the proposed method are presented. In addition to being less demanding on the computation time and complexity, the proposed method is also suitable for adopting in design guidelines, as it can use response spectra for hysteretic energy demand estimation. On the estimation of hysteretic energy demands for SDOF systems   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Based on a statistical study of the dynamic response of single degree of freedom (SDOF) systems subjected to earthquake ground motions, a rule to estimate hysteretic energy demands is proposed. Expressions for elastic–perfectly plastic, stiffness degrading and pinching SDOF systems were obtained. The proposed rule does not explicitly depend on the period of the system; instead, it depends on the elastic pseudo‐acceleration and elastic velocity spectra. It is shown that the proposed rule can be applied to compute hysteretic energy demands for systems located at different soil conditions. In addition, information about scatter and bias of the proposed rule is also presented. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper presents qualitative investigations on the energy behaviour of structures into which hysteretic dampers are incorporated. Emphasis was given to the ratio of the structural stiffness after the yielding of hysteretic dampers to the initial elastic stiffness, with a premise that this ratio, termed α in this study, tends to be large for structures with hysteretic dampers. Structures concerned were represented by discrete spring–mass systems having bilinear restoring force behaviour, in which the second stiffness relative to the initial stiffness is α. It was found that with the increase of α the total input energy tends to increase, but the increase is confined to a narrow range of natural periods. Both the total input energy and hysteretic energy were found to become less sensitive to the yield strength with the increase of α. A simple formula was also proposed to estimate the maximum deformation given the knowledge of the hysteretic energy. Analysis of MDOF systems revealed that, even when α is large, the total input energy and hysteretic energy for MDOF systems are approximately the same as those of the equivalent SDOF system, and the hysteretic energy can be distributed uniformly over the stories if α is large.  相似文献

This paper describes an analytical investigation on a reinforced concrete lateral load resisting structural system comprising a pin‐supported (base‐rocking) shear wall coupled with a moment frame on 1 or both sides of the wall. Yielding dampers are used to provide supplemental energy dissipation through the relative displacements at the vertical connections between the wall and the frames. The study extends a previous linear‐elastic model for pin‐supported wall‐frame structures by including the effects of the dampers. A closed‐form solution of the lateral load behavior of the structure is derived by approximating the discrete wall‐frame‐damper interactions with distributed (ie, continuous) properties. The validity of the model is verified by comparing the closed‐form results with computational models using OpenSees program. Then, a parametric analysis is conducted to investigate the effects of the wall, frame, and damper stiffness on the behavior of the structure. It is found that the damper stiffness significantly affects the distribution of shear forces and bending moments over the wall height. Finally, the performance‐based plastic design approach extended to the wall‐frame‐damper system is proposed. Case studies are carried out to design 2 damped pin‐supported wall‐frame structures using the proposed approach. Nonlinear dynamic time‐history analyses are conducted to verify the effectiveness of this method. Results indicate that the designed structures can achieve the performance level with the story drift ratios less than target values, and weak‐story failure mechanism is not observed. The approach can be used in engineering applications.  相似文献

Passive energy dissipation devices are increasingly implemented in frame structures to improve their performance under seismic loading. Most guidelines for designing this type of system retain the requirements applicable to frames without dampers, and this hinders taking full advantage of the benefits of implementing dampers. Further, assessing the extent of damage suffered by the frame and by the dampers for different levels of seismic hazard is of paramount importance in the framework of performance‐based design. This paper presents an experimental investigation whose objectives are to provide empirical data on the response of reinforced concrete (RC) frames equipped with hysteretic dampers (dynamic response and damage) and to evaluate the need for the frame to form a strong column‐weak beam mechanism and dissipate large amounts of plastic strain energy. To this end, shake‐table tests were conducted on a 2/5‐scale RC frame with hysteretic dampers. The frame was designed only for gravitational loads. The dampers provided lateral strength and stiffness, respectively, three and 12 times greater than those of the frame. The test structure was subjected to a sequence of seismic simulations that represented different levels of seismic hazard. The RC frame showed a performance level of ‘immediate occupancy’, with maximum rotation demands below 20% of the ultimate capacity. The dampers dissipated most of the energy input by the earthquake. It is shown that combining hysteretic dampers with flexible reinforced concrete frames leads to structures with improved seismic performance and that requirements of conventional RC frames (without dampers) can be relieved. Robust performance of hysteretic dampers, used in controlling mid‐rise buildings, against change of earthquake characteristics is investigated in this paper. A shear type ten‐storey building incorporating hysteretic dampers is studied as a model under the assumption of elastic perfectly plastic behavior for inelastic frame and damper deformations. An energy‐based damper performance index is used to evaluate damper overall efficiency. Thirty‐five earthquake records are applied and the damper strength is optimized for each earthquake record to obtain the maximum performance index or the damper efficiency. Based on the obtained numerical results it is found that, besides the effect of maximum energy input on damper efficiency, other time‐dependant properties such as energy‐based effective duration and earthquake dominant period have great influence on the damper efficiency. A factor (α), which represents the combined effect of maximum energy input, effective duration and dominant earthquake period, is also derived for the prediction of damper efficiency. The inelastic response of a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system to different sets of earthquake records was analysed to study the significance of ground motion characteristics on structural damage. Six non-linear models were used. The ductility ratio and hysteretic energy index were chosen as two important damage indices to measure the structural damage. The dispersion phenomenon exhibited by yield spectra due to input ground motion was reduced by incorporating the ground motion a/v ratio into the two damage indices. Finally, empirical formulae for estimating two measures of structural damage were developed for each hysteretic model.  相似文献

A new direct performance‐based design method utilizing design tools called performance‐spectra (P‐Spectra) for low‐rise to medium‐rise frame structures incorporating supplemental damping devices is presented. P‐Spectra are graphic tools that relate the responses of nonlinear SDOF systems with supplemental dampers to various damping parameters and dynamic system properties that structural designers can control. These tools integrate multiple response quantities that are important to the performance of a structure into a single compact graphical format to facilitate direct comparison of different potential solutions that satisfy a set of predetermined performance objectives under various levels of seismic hazard. An SDOF to MDOF transformation procedure that defines the required supplemental damping properties for the MDOF structure to achieve the response defined by the target SDOF system is also presented for hysteretic, linear viscous and viscoelastic damping devices. Using nonlinear time‐history analyses of idealized shear structures, the accuracy of the transformation procedure is verified. A seismic performance upgrade design example is presented to demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed method for achieving design performance goals using supplemental damping devices. An experimental investigation on a base isolation system incorporating stainless steel–Teflon bearings as sliders, and pressurized fluid viscous spring dampers, is presented in this paper. In the system examined, dampers are connected to the base floor of an isolated building to provide the desired passive control of response in the superstructure, as well as to guarantee that it re‐centres completely after the termination of a seismic action. Two types of experiments were conducted: sinusoidal and random cyclic tests, and a pseudodynamic test in ‘substructured’ configuration. The cyclic tests were aimed at characterizing what follows: the hysteretic and strain‐rate‐dependent response of the considered highly non‐linear spring dampers; the normal pressure‐ and strain‐rate‐dependent frictional behaviour of steel–Teflon bearings, manufactured in compliance with the latest standards for this class of sliders; and the combined response of their assembly. The pseudodynamic test simulated the installation of the protection system at the base of a 2:3‐scale three‐storey steel frame structure, already tested in unprotected conditions by an earlier experimental campaign. Among other findings, the results of the performed tests, as well as of relevant mechanical interpretation and numerical simulation analyses, confirmed the linear additive combination of the dissipative actions of spring dampers and sliders in this mixed installation, and the high protective performance of the considered base isolation/supplemental damping system in a realistic earthquake simulation. In many parts of the world, the repetition of medium–strong intensity earthquake ground motions at brief intervals of time has been observed. The new design philosophies for buildings in seismic areas are based on multi‐level design approaches, which take into account more than a single damageability limit state. According to these approaches, a sequence of seismic actions may produce important consequences on the structural safety. In this paper, the effects of repeated earthquake ground motions on the response of single‐degree‐of‐freedom systems (SDOF) with non‐linear behaviour are analysed. A comparison is performed with the effect of a single seismic event on the originally non‐damaged system for different hysteretic models in terms of pseudo‐acceleration response spectra, behaviour factor q and damage parameters. The elastic–perfect plastic system is the most vulnerable one under repeated earthquake ground motions and is characterized by a strong reduction of the q‐factor. A moment resisting steel frame is analysed as well, showing a reduction of the q‐factor under repeated earthquake ground motions even larger than that of an equivalent SDOF system. This paper summarizes results of a comprehensive analytical study aimed at evaluating the amplitude and heightwise distribution of residual drift demands in multi‐storey moment‐resisting frames after earthquake excitation. For that purpose, a family of 12 one‐bay two‐dimensional generic frame models was subjected to an ensemble of 40 ground motions scaled to different intensities. In this investigation, an inelastic ground motion intensity measure was employed to scale each record, which allowed reducing the record‐to‐record variability in the estimation of residual drift demands. The results were statistically processed in order to evaluate the influence of ground motion intensity, number of stories, period of vibration, frame mechanism, system overstrength, and hysteretic behaviour on central tendency of residual drift demands. In addition, a special emphasis was given to evaluate the uncertainty in the estimation of residual drift demands. Results of incremental dynamic analyses indicate that the amplitude and heightwise distribution of residual drift demands strongly depends on the frame mechanism, the heightwise system structural overstrength and the component hysteretic behaviour. An important conclusion for performance‐based assessment is that the evaluation of residual drift demands involves significantly larger levels of uncertainty (i.e. record‐to‐record variability) than that of maximum drift demands, which suggests that this variability and corresponding uncertainty should be explicitly taken into account when estimating residual drift demands during performance‐based seismic assessment of frame buildings. The linked column frame (LCF) system is proposed as a seismic load resisting system that uses conventional components to limit seismic damage to relatively easily replaced elements. The LCF features a primary lateral system, denoted the linked column, which is made up of dual columns connected with replaceable links, and a secondary flexible moment frame system with beams having fully restrained connections at one end and simple connections at the other. The linked columns are designed to limit seismic forces and provide energy dissipation via link yielding, while preventing damage to the moment frame under certain earthquake hazard levels. A design procedure is proposed that ensures plastic hinges develop in the links of the linked columns at a significantly lower story drift than when plastic hinges develop in the moment frame beams. The large drift difference helps enable design of this system for two distinct performance states: rapid return to occupancy, where only link damage occurs and relatively simple link replacement is possible, and collapse prevention, where both the links and the beams of the moment frame may be damaged. A series of 3‐story, 6‐story, and 9‐story prototype LCF buildings were designed using the proposed design approach. Nonlinear models were developed for the designs with the link models validated using recent experimental results. The seismic response of these systems was investigated for ground motions representing various seismic hazard levels. Results show that the LCF system not only provides collapse prevention, but also has the capability of limiting economic loss by reducing structural damage and allowing for rapid return to occupancy following earthquakes with shorter return periods. Hysteretic dampers are used to dissipate earthquake‐induced energy in base‐isolated structures by acquiring inelastic deformations, rendering their hysteretic behavior of vital importance. The present paper focuses on investigating the behavior of U‐shaped steel dampers under bidirectional loading; this is significantly different from their corresponding uniaxial behavior. Two main sets of loading tests on full‐scale specimens are conducted in this regard: (i) quasi‐static tests with simple histories and (ii) dynamic tests with realistic loading histories. Based on the results obtained in the quasi‐static tests, an interaction curve that accounts for the reduction of the cyclic deformation capacity is proposed. However, the fidelity of this relation must be assessed under loading conditions similar to those of a seismically isolated structure subjected to an earthquake, which represents the goal of the second set of tests. The results of the dynamic tests validate the proposed interaction curve for estimating the deformation capacity of U‐shaped steel dampers under bidirectional loading.
