We present results of polarimetric and photometric observations of bright comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) obtained at the 0.7
m telescope of Kharkov University Observatory from June 18, 1996 to April 24, 1997. The IHW and HB comet filters were used.
The C2 and C3 production rates for Hale-Bopp are more than one order of magnitude larger and the dust production rates are more than two
orders of magnitude larger than the Halley ones at comparable distances. Hence, Hale-Bopp was one of the most dusty comets.
The average UC-BC and BC-RC colours of the dust were −0.02 and 0.13 mag, respectively. The polarization of comet Hale-Bopp
at small phase angles of 4.8–13.0° was in good agreement with the date for comet P1/Halley at the same phase angles in spite
of the fact that the heliocentric distances of comments differed nearly twice. However, at intermediate phase angles of 34–49°
the polarization of comet Hale-Bopp was significantly larger than the polarization of the other dusty comets. It is the first
case of such a large difference found in the continuum polarization of comets. The wavelength dependence of polarization for
Hale-Bopp was steeper than for other dusty comets. The observed degree of polarization for the anti-sunward side of the coma
was permanently higher than that for the sunward shell side. The polarization phase dependence of Hale-Bopp is discussed and
compared with the polarization curves for other dusty comets. The peculiar polarimetric properties of comet Hale-Bopp are
most likely caused by an over-abundance of small or/and absorbing dust particles in the coma.

The discovery of X-ray emission from comets has created a number of questions about the physical mechanism producing the radiation.
There are now a variety of explanations for the emission, from thermal bremsstrahlung of electrons off neutrals or dust, to
charge exchange induced emission from solar wind ions, to scattering of solar X-rays from attogram dust, to reconnection of
solar magnetic field lines. In an effort to understand this new phenomenon, we observed but failed to detect in the X-ray
the very dusty and active comet C/Hale-Bopp 1995 O1 over a two year period, September 1996 to December 1997, using the ROSAT
HRI imaging photometer at 0.1–2.0 keV and the ASCA SIS imaging spectrometer at 0.5–10.0 keV. The results of our Hale-Bopp
non-detections, when combined with spectroscopic imaging 0.08–1.0 keV observations of the comet by EUVE and BeppoSAX, show
that the emission has the same spectral shape and strong variability seen in other comets. Comparison of the ROSAT photometry
of the comet to our ROSAT database of 8 comets strongly suggests that the overall X-ray faintness of the comet was due to
an emission mechanism coupled to gas, and not dust, in the comet’s coma.

The plasma tails of comets clearly show the demarcation of the solar wind into distinct equatorial and polar regions (Brandt
and Snow (2000), Icarus
148, 52–64).The boundary is determined by the maximum extent in latitude of the heliospheric current sheet (HCS). The observational
record contains many well-observed equatorial comets, but observations of comets in the polar region are relatively rare.
In addition to its size and brightness, comet Hale–Bopp had an orbital inclination of 89.4° and was well observed for months
in the polar region. We document the comet's large-scale appearance throughout the apparition, including the polar region
and its transition into the equatorial region. The bright dust tail hampered observations of the plasma tail, particularly
near the head, but images taken with a CO+ filter show a very large disconnection event (DE) on May 7 and May 8, 1997. The time of disconnection is estimated at approximately
May 4.0. This DE is associated with a crossing of the HCS. The model calculations of the HCS indicate that other crossings
might have occurred in late April, but given the uncertainty in the calculation, the comet might have missed the HCS. Sparse
observational coverage and the bright dust tail prevent further investigation of the potential earlier HCS crossings. The
plasma tail shows anomalous orientations at the highest latitudes and possible explanations are discussed. 相似文献

The Sekanina-Farrell particle fragmentation model for the striated tails of dust comets is successfully applied to two images
of comet Hale-Bopp to study the motions of 12 striae in a time span of March 12–15, 1997. There is evidence for recurring
outbursts with a periodicity of 11h21m, consistent with results based on analysis of dust jets. The ejecta in all the striae appear to have been released from one
source on the nucleus between the end of January and the second half of February 1997, some 60 to 40 days before perihelion.
The parent particles were subjected to a radiation pressure acceleration of βp ≃ 0.55 and their fragmentation lifetimes in 11 of the 12 striae were practically constant and equal to 13–15 days, when normalized
to 1 AU from the Sun. Brief analysis of Watanabe et al.'s measurements of striae on their images from March 5–9, 1997 shows
even shorter fragmentation lifetimes for the parent particles, mostly about 7–11 days at1 AU.

Sekanina and Farrell's model for the striated dust tails of comets describes the formation of striae as a two-step fragmentation
process that is characterized by an ejection time te of parent particles, by their radiation pressure acceleration βp, and by their fragmentation time tf. Of these three, tf is the weakest parameter in that a range oftf offers a set of nearly equivalent solutions. In this context, we comment on Nishioka et al.'s finite-lifetime model, which
is a modification of the fragmentation model. We propose a truncated Gaussian function as a first-approximation distribution
law for particle fragmentation times. We apply this generalized model to a stria in comet Hale-Bopp detected on March 5–15,
1997 and analyzed by Pittichová et al. in a recent paper. We find that in order to fit the stria's estimated width of ∼150
000 km, the fragmentation times cannot be distributed over a period of more than approximately 2 to 3 days.

Observations of comets in the 18-cm OH transitions offer a means to probe gas production, kinematics, and OH excitation in
comets. We present initial results of OH observations of comet Hale-Bopp obtained with the NRAO 43 m antenna located in Greenbank,
WV. Maps of the emission provide strong constraints on the amount of quenching of the inversion of the OH ground state Λ-doublet
in the coma. Analysis of the total radio OH flux and maps of its radial brightness distribution indicate a quenched region
on the order of ∼500,000 km during March and April 1997. This large value is generally consistent with previous observations
of radio OH quenching in lower production rate comets when the high production rate of comet Hale-Bopp is considered.

Since many years cometary ions have been observed by the authors and their coworkers in order to study the comet-solar wind
interaction. Comets with water production rates ranging from 1028(46P/Wirtanen) to 6 1030molecules s−1(C/1995 O1 Hale-Bopp) have been observed. In this paper we briefly introduce the physics of the comet-solar wind interaction.
New observations of comet C/1996 Q1 (Tabur) are presented, where for the first time H2O+and CO+ions have been recorded exactly simultaneously with a two-channel system. They are compared with previous observations of
comets C/1989 X1 (Austin), 46P (Wirtanen) and 109P (Swift-Tuttle). We use a new method of Wegmann et al. (1998), based on
the MHD scaling law, to determine the water production of comet Tabur from its H2O+column density map and obtain a value of 3.3 1028water molecules s−1. Nonstationary phenomena like tail rays and so-called tail disconnections are very briefly reviewed. A movie of plasma envelopes
observed in the light of OH+in comet 1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) is presented on the attached CD-ROM.

We review the composition of Jupiter-family comet (JFC) dust as inferred from infrared spectroscopy. We find that JFCs have silicate emission features with fluxes roughly 20-25% over the dust continuum (emission strength 1.20-1.25), similar to the weakest silicate features in Oort Cloud (OC) comets. We discuss the grain properties that alter the silicate emission feature (composition, size, and structure/shape), and emphasize that thermal emission from the comet nucleus can have significant influence on the derived silicate emission strength. Recent evidence suggests that grain porosity is the is different between JFCs and OC comets, but more observations and models of silicates in JFCs are needed to determine if a consistent set of grain parameters can explain their weak silicate emission features. Models of 8 m telescope and Spitzer Space Telescope observations have shown that JFCs have crystalline silicates with abundances similar to or less than those found in OC comets, although the crystalline silicate mineralogy of comets 9P/Tempel and C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) differ from each other in Mg and Fe content. The heterogeneity of comet nuclei can also be assessed with mid-infrared spectroscopy, and we review the evidence for heterogeneous dust properties in the nucleus of comet 9P/Tempel. Models of dust formation, mixing in the solar nebula, and comet formation must be able to explain the observed range of Mg and Fe content and the heterogeneity of comet 9P/Tempel, although more work is needed in order to understand to what extent do comets 9P/Tempel and Hale-Bopp represent comets as a whole. 相似文献

The paper presents the results of dynamic simulation for the dust tail formation of comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp). To simulate
the dust tail, the trajectories of 2 × 106 dust particles were traced. The sizes, ejection moments, outflow directions and velocities of the dust particles were defined
by the Monte Carlo algorithm. The obtained three-dimensional tail was projected on the sky plane to compare it with the observed
images. The brightness distribution in the comet tail was fitted to similar model parameters for three different dates. According
to our model experiments, the observed tails could be formed by particles with sizes from 0.3 to 8.0 μm, ejection velocities
from 0.155 to 0.670 km/s, and power index of the exponential size distribution from −3.6 to −3.7. It is shown that the inclusion
of the particles fragmentation processes leads to a noticeable improvement of the simulation results. 相似文献

We report the detection of soft X-rays from comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) by the Low Energy Concentrator Spectrometer (LECS)
on-board the X-ray satellite, BeppoSAX. The observations took place on 1996 September 10–11 approximately 1 day after a large
dust outburst (Schulz et al., 1997–1999). After correcting for the comets motion, a 7σ enhancement was found centered (2.1
± 1.3) x 105 km from the position of the nucleus, in the general solar direction. The total X-ray luminosity in the 0.1–2.0 keV energy
band is 5 x 1016 erg s−1 which is at least a factor of ∼ 3 greater than measured by the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE)4 days later and suggests
that the bulk of the emission measured by the LECS is related to the dust outburst. The extracted LECS spectrum is well fit
by a thermal bremsstrahlung-like distribution of temperature of 0.29 ± 0.06 keV - consistent with that observed in other comets.
We find no evidence for fluorescent carbon or oxygen emission and place 95% confidence limits of 1.0 x 1015 and 7.8 x 1015 erg s−1 to narrow line emission at 0.28 and 0.53 keV, respectively. We calculate that if such lines are present, they constitute
at most 18% of the 0.1–2.0 keV continuum luminosity.

Comet Hale-Bopp was the largest comet by almost any definition, observed at least since the advent of modern observing techniques. In a more typical comet both the chemical and dynamical influences of collisional processes are limited by the short time a parcel of gas sublimated from the nucleus remains in the dense part of the coma. The resulting large size of the collisional coma in comet Hale-Bopp had important consequences on the dynamics of the coma, which in turn has important consequences on how observations are interpreted with standard models. Measured velocities of typical gas species (mostly the observed radicals) as well as dust were larger than normal comets. Conversely, velocities of super thermal atomic hydrogen were smaller than normal because of the samecollisional processes. Furthermore, as a consequence, dust particles, which are dragged by the outflowing gas, were also accelerated to larger velocities. Such larger velocities are not simply an interesting curiosity in their own right, because nearly all observations of dust and gas are interpreted with models of the coma that depend directly on some measurement or assumption with regard to velocity. In this presentation both observations and theory regarding the dynamical conditions in the coma of comet Hale-Bopp are summarized. 相似文献

We report the identification of gas jets in comet Hale-Bopp in OH, NH, CN, C2 and C3. This is the first time OH and NH jets without an obvious optical dust jet counterpart have been identified in narrowband
comet images. We also confirm the existence of CN jets as reported by Larson et al. (1997) and Mueller et al. (1998). Jet
features can be seen in the March and April 1997 datasets, approximately a month before and after perihelion. Our results
contribute to the understanding of both the chemical properties of the comet as well as the physical mechanisms necessary
to produce these features.

We present infrared imaging and photometry of the bright, giant comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp). The comet was observed in an
extended infrared and optical observing campaign in 1996–1997. The infrared morphology of the comet was observed to change
from the 6 to 8 jet “porcupine” structure in 1996 to the “pinwheel” structure seen in 1997; this has implications for the
position of the rotational angular momentum vector. Long term light curves taken at 11.3 μm indicate a dust production rate
that varies with heliocentric distance as ∶ r−1.4. Short term light curves taken at perihelion indicate a rotational periodicity of 11.3 hours and a projected dust outflow
speed of ∶ 0.4 km s−1. The spectral energy distribution of the dust on October 31, 1996 is well modeled by a mixture of 70% silicaceous and 30%
carbonaceous non-porous grains, with a small particle dominated size distribution like that seen for comet P/Halley (McDonnell
et al., 1991), an overall dust production rate of 2 × 105 kg s−1, a dust-to-gas ratio of ∶5, and an albedo of 39%.

The infrared emission of various comets can be matched within the framework that all comets are made of aggregated interstellar dust. This is demonstrated by comparing results on Halley (a periodic comet), Borrelly (a Jupiter family short period comet), Hale-Bopp (a long period comet), and extra-solar comets in the β Pictoris disk. Attempts have been made to generalize the chemical composition of comet nuclei based on the observation of cometary dust and volatiles and the interstellar dust model. Finally, we deduce some of the expected dust and surface properties of comet Wirtanen from the interstellar dust model as applied to other comets. 相似文献

We present 1- to 5-μm broadband and CVF images of comet Hale-Bopp taken 1997 February 10.5 UT, 50 days before perihelion.
All the images exhibit a nonspherical coma with a bright “ridge” in the direction of the dust tail approximately 10″ from
the coma. Synthetic aperture spectrophotometry implies that the optically important grains are of a radius ≤0.4 μm; smallest
radius for any comet seen to date. The variation of the integrated surface brightness with radial distance from the coma (ρ)
in all the images closely follows the “steady state” ρ−1 model for comet dust ablation (Gehrz and Ney, 1992). The near-infrared colors taken along the dust tail are not constant
implying the dust grain properties vary with coma distance.

Splitting events affect cometary nuclei to a different level of severity ranging from complete disruption of the nucleus (e.g., C/1999 S4 LINEAR) to separation of major fragments (e.g., 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3) and spill-offs of smaller boulders (e.g., C/2001 A2 LINEAR).Fragmentation of comets produces secondary products over a wide range of sizes (from cometesimals to sub-micron dust). It is detectable through the presence of fragments (with own comae and tails) in the coma of the parent nucleus, through outbursts in its activity and through arc-lets (“coma wings”)associated with fragments. The secondaries have different life times and show different non-gravitational forces. Nucleus splitting is also considered to generate whole families of comets (Kreutz group) or — if gravitational bound — multiple nuclei (e.g., C/1995 O1 Hale-Bopp). It may explain the striae phenomena seen in dust tails of bright comets (C/1995 O1 Hale-Bopp) and the detection of chains of impact craters onother bodies in the solar system. As process of significant mass loss it is relevant for the scenario of nucleus extinction, at the same time it also plays a role for the number statistics of existing (observable) comets and for the size distribution of comet nuclei. Various model scenarios for nucleus splitting are proposed: tidal disruption, rotational splitting, break-up due to internal gas pressure, fragmentation due to collision with other bodies. Only in one case, Comet D/1993 F1Shoemaker-Levy 9, the physical process of fragmentation could be undoubtedly identified. In any case, comet splitting provides important insights inthe internal structure, surface layering and chemistry of comet nuclei. 相似文献

A very long series of photographic observations of the comet Hale-Bopp has been made during January–April 1997 at the double
astrograph (400/2000) of the Main Astronomical Observatory (Kyiv, Ukraine). Some of the cometary photos were obtained with
two wide-band filter combinations. One of these combinations isolates C2 emission, another — the nearby dust continuum. The images were digitized by means of AMDPH-XY machine and then calibrated
following the standard procedure. After subtraction of the dust continuum the distribution of surface brightness in the C2 emission coma of comet Hale-Bopp was studied. We found an asymmetric brightness distribution both pre- and post-perihelion.
On 21.77 April 1997 a secondary brightness peak is found at the distance of 1.03 × 105 km from the nucleus. It is possible that this peak is related to the extended source of the C2 molecules.

During our monitoring observations of comet Hale-Bopp, we found several sporadic ejections of dust from the nucleus. The most
prominent ejection was observed on May 6–9, 1997, in the post-perihelion phase of the apparition. In this paper, we report
preliminary analysis of this event, in which the total mass of the dust cloud is estimated to be 1.6 × 1011 g.

In 1996 comet Hale-Bopp exhibited a porcupine-like coma with straight jets of dust emission from several active regions on
the nucleus. The multi-jet coma geometry developed during the first half of 1996. While the jet orientation remained almost
constant over months, the relative intensity of the jets changed with time. By using the embedded fan model of Sekanina and
Boehnhardt (1997a) the jet pattern of comet Hale-Bopp in 1996 can be interpreted as boundaries of dust emission cones (fans)
from four — possibly five — active regions on the nucleus (for a numerical modelling see part II of the paper by Sekanina
and Boehnhardt, 1997b).

The ratio of CH4/CO in comets is an important indicator of the region of their formation. However, it is difficult to measure the quantity
of CH+. The Giotto Ion Mass Spectrometer experiment observed a quantity of CH+ which seemed inconsistent with the amount of CH+. Thus, it was proposed that a source of the CH+ was a distributed source in the dust. We tested this hypothesis by observing the CH emission strength in comet Hale-Bopp
as a function of dustiness. We see no strong correlation between the dust and the gas. Thus, for Hale-Bopp,dust is unlikely
to be a dominant source of CH.
