Ethiopia is endowed with many rock‐hewn churches, with the largest group in central and eastern Tigrai. These churches can be divided into four zones: the Atsbi, Hawzen‐Ger'alta, Sinkata‐Adigrat, and Tembien, with more than 100 rock‐hewn churches of different ages, sizes, and histories. However, they have one thing in common: All are carved into sandstone. The Enticho, Adigrat, and Ambaradam sandstones (Permo‐Carboniferous, Triassic—Middle Jurassic, and Early Cretaceous, respectively) are extensively exposed in these areas and are characterized by thick and massive beds of coarse‐ to fine‐grained and well‐sorted successions. These sandstones are easily carved, yet compact enough to withstand pressure. Although limestone, basalt, and crystalline rocks are exposed in the same area, few rock‐hewn churches have been carved into them. The rock type is, therefore, the most important factor in the location of these rock‐hewn churches. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

The Lalibela rock-hewn churches are one of the most important religious pilgrimage sites in Ethiopia. These churches are carved from the scoriaceous basalt rock substrate, which has been exposed to attack by biological agents with significant loss of surface material. Particularly, the widespread growth of lichens and other microorganisms on the carved surfaces of the churches has proven to represent a substantial threat for the preservation of the site. In this study, laboratory tests have been conducted to assess the feasibility of using laser technology as an efficient cleaning method of biological patina from polymineralic stone substrates. Multi-analytical techniques were applied for the characterization of the stone samples collected from two of the Lalibela churches: Bete Giyorgis and Bete Amanuel. Stone samples artificially inoculated with bacteria, yeast, fungi isolates, and lichen-encrusted samples were laser cleaned using UV and IR laser wavelengths. The high content of Fe and Ti oxides and the high porosity have made the stone surfaces easily susceptible to low-energy laser treatment. Results indicate that laser cleaning can be applied to polymineralic lithotypes and UV irradiation can successfully remove lichen colonies. Further studies need to be conducted to optimize the laser procedure in polymineralic, high porosity stones.  相似文献

Fresh tholeiitic basalt glass has been reacted with seawater at 150°C, (water/rock mass ratio of 10), and fresh diabase has been reacted with a Na-K-Ca-Cl fluid at 375°C (water/rock mass ratios of 1, 2, and 5) to understand better the role of temperature, basalt composition, and water/rock mass ratio on the direction and magnitude of B and Li exchange during basalt alteration. At 150°C, slight but nevertheless significant amounts of B and Li were removed from seawater and incorporated into a dominantly smectite alteration phase. At 375°C, however, B and Li were leached from basalt. B behaved as a “soluble” element and attained concentrations in solution limited only by the B concentration in basalt and the water/rock mass ratio. Li, however, was less mobile. For example, at water/rock mass ratios of 1, 2, and 5, the percent of Li leached from basalt was 58, 70, and 92% respectively. This suggests some mineralogic control on Li mobility during hydrothermal alteration of basalt, especially at low-water/rock mass ratios. In general, these results, as well as those for B, are consistent with the temperature-dependent chemistry of altered seafloor basalt and the chemistry of ridge crest hydrothermal fluids.Based on the distribution and chemistry of products of seafloor weathering, low (≤ 150°C) and high-temperature hydrothermal alteration of basalt, and the chemistry of ridge crest hydrothermal fluids, it was estimated that alteration of the oceanic crust is a Li source for seawater. This is not true for B, however, since the hot spring flux estimated for B is balanced by low-temperature basalt alteration. These data, coupled with B and Li flux estimates for other processes (e.g., continental weathering, clay mineral adsorption, authigenic silicate formation and formation of siliceous skeletal material) yield new insight into the B and Li geochemical cycles. Calculations performed here indicate relatively good agreement between the magnitude of B and Li sources and sinks. The geochemical cycle of B, however, may be affected by serpentinization of mantle derived peridotite in oceanic fracture zones. Serpentinites are conspicuously enriched in B and if the B source for these rocks is seawater, then an additional B sink exists which must be integrated into the B geochemical cycle. However, until more data are available in terms of areal extent of serpentinization, serpentite chemistry and isotopic composition, the importance of B in these rocks with respect to the B geochemical cycle remains speculative at best.  相似文献

The St. Servatius Church in Quedlinburg (UNESCO’s World Heritage Site, Germany) is characterised by long-standing stability problems and structural damages, which have been known over the last several centuries. The monotonous Cretaceous sandstone with its poor lithification is considered to be the main factor. The sandstone is characterised by a high porosity of around 30 Vol.% (max. ca. 35 Vol.%) and a corresponding high w-value. The porosity and the degree of cementation are responsible for the very low compressive strength of around 8 MPa at maximum, whereas under moisture these values are significantly reduced up to 40%. The freeze–thaw tests indicate a very poor resistance to frost weathering, which may explain the near-surface softening of the sandstone. Direct shear experiments with an approximate 60° angle of friction on the sandstone clearly demonstrate the safety margins. Initial geotechnical modelling does not favour the hypothesis that a landslide of the hill parallel to the southward dipping bedding planes (i.e. shear failure along weak zones) can occur. A prominent clay layer (also with a southward dip) below the entire castle hill is monitored to determine the possible amount of movement with respect to the geological discontinuities (e.g. joints, fractures). At present, a combination of foundation problems are being considered for the stability situation at the church. These include construction deficiencies due to deformation or softening of the foundation of the forerunner churches and missing or faulty connections from building additions. Geological factors responsible for the stability problems include the softening of the sandstone by the influence of weathering and penetrating water as well as the presence of possible shear planes and joints.  相似文献

提要:岩石化学风化程度评价指标应该同时满足以下三个基本条件,即与风化程度之间的关系简单明确、对风化程度变化具有足够的敏感性和易于确定和不易受到人为因素影响。作为铁镁质岩石的主要代表,(峨眉山)玄武岩风化程度评价除考虑可引起组分淋失与富集的水解反应外,还应充分考虑二价铁的氧化反应。新鲜峨眉山玄武岩中并存的二价铁和三价铁的含量总体稳定,910个样品的FeO、Fe2O3平均含量分别为8.45%和5.15%,以均匀、随机的方式赋存于辉石、橄榄石、杏仁体中的绿泥石、磁铁矿及火山玻璃中。风化玄武岩、玄武岩斜坡地下水及新鲜玄武岩浸泡液的地球化学研究结果表明,FeO及Fe2O3含量对峨眉山玄武岩风化程度的敏感性明显高于其他组分,同时铁又是玄武岩风化过程中活动性最差的元素之一。三价铁和二价铁的摩尔数比值(FF)适合于峨眉山玄武岩整个风化过程的风化程度判别,比既有风化指数具有更高的分辨率,尤其是对风化初期玄武岩。  相似文献

Triassic basalt of the Middle Atlas has been subject to metamorphic transformation then weathering. Occurrence in both metabasalt and saprolite of ubiquitous clay minerals, such as smectite and mixed layers chlorite–smectite, makes it difficult to distinguish between the two alteration facies and explains the interest of complementary sources of information. In the Bhallil weathering profile, petrographical and mineralogical analyses of primary igneous minerals and their alteration products coupled with Fe oxidation state determination in clay fractions allow to identify three alteration facies: (i) metamorphic basalt, where iron occurs mainly as the ferrous form; (ii) the lower part of saprolite, where iron is partially oxidized to its ferric form; (iii) the upper part of saprolite, where iron is completely oxidized. 跨海大桥由于受地形限制,桥基只能布设在单薄的海域岛礁上,而岛礁岩体质量及其边坡稳定将控制桥基型式及埋深。结合在建舟山大陆连岛工程西堠门大桥桥基所在的老虎山岛礁,针对其大跨度、高塔柱桥梁地基赋存的地质环境条件,综合考虑不同部位(即水上、水下及潮间带三个不同位置),提出以岩石力学性质、岩体结构类型、结构面发育特征(尤其是软弱结构面控制)、风化状况、地下水(受海水频繁潮涨潮落影响)等分级控制因素,并分别相应采用岩石单轴饱和抗压强度Rs、岩石质量指标RQD、岩体完整性系数Kv、风化程度系数KY及地下水影响修正系数U对上述分级控制因素进行量化,建立了反映海域岛礁岩体总体质量综合指数Z=Rs×RQD×Kv×KY+U,并相应得出不同级别岩体质量分级体系。  相似文献

Weathering rinds formed in Mesozoic sandstone and basalt cobbles buried in terrace deposits for up to 300 ka have been investigated. The aim was to determine the formation process and elemental mass balances during rind development. The ages of terraces distributed in the western part of Fukui prefecture, central Japan have been determined as 50 ka, 120 ka and 300 ka based on a tephro-stratigraphic method. Detailed investigations across the weathering rinds, consisting of microscopic observations, porosity measurements, and mineralogical and geochemical analyses using X-ray diffractometry (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), secondary X-ray analytical microscopy (SXAM), scanning electron microanalyser (SEM) and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) have been carried out. The results revealed that the Fe concentrations in the weathering rind of a basalt cobble slightly decreased from the cobble’s surface (rim) towards the unweathered core. In contrast, in a sandstone cobble formed under the same environmental conditions over the same period of time there is an Fe-rich layer at some distance below the cobble’s surface. Elemental mass balances across the rinds were determined by using open system mass balance (τi,j) calculations and show that the Fe was precipitated as Fe-oxyhydroxides in the basalt cobbles, although Fe was slightly removed from the rims. In sandstone cobbles, on the other hand, Fe migrated along a Fe concentration gradient by diffusion and precipitated as Fe-oxyhydroxide minerals to form the weathering rinds. Presumably, precipitation was due to the relatively higher pH conditions caused by mineral dissolution within the pores, principally involving calcite, but probably also silicates including feldspar. The detailed characterization of the weathering rinds revealed the influence of lithology on the accumulation and dissolution of Fe-oxyhydroxides, causing weathering rinds with different characteristics to develop in different kinds of buried cobbles under the same conditions. Relatively large climatic changes in the study area did not cause discernable variations in the mean formation rates of the studied rinds, which were in the order of 10?8 m/a for both basalt and sandstone cobbles. These rates are 1–2 orders of magnitude slower than those reported for tropical areas elsewhere, most probably due to the lower rainfall in the studied area.  相似文献

This article deals with a geological investigation carried out as a fundamental part of the conservation and static restoration of several antique churches excavated in andesitic tuff in the Göreme valley and adjacent areas of Cappadocia in Central Anatolia, Turkey. Two stages have been completed already, in 1982 and 1985, respectively, and the work is still in progress. Seismicity is not regarded as a structural hazard, but the geological history includes a series of volcanic episodes since the Oligocene (about 38 million years ago), which persisted into fairly recent times and laid down a great thickness of tuff rock. Erosion sculptured this tuff preferentially because of irregular harder, basaltic layers, which later capped rock pinnacles, the so-called peribacalars, in which churches were hewn over a thousand years ago. Because the host rock is heavily fissured, precipitation has entered and has damaged many mural paintings. These are also subject to vandalism, and efforts have been made to restore them by the usual conservation intervention. However, grouting is necessary and must take into account the porosity of the tuff, which also permits capillary rise from crypts. Sometimes, during wet episodes, water flushes into these and scours the interior walls as well. The basic problem remains geological, and the contribution of the earth sciences is very important. Thus, an engineering geology study has determined that the tuff rock is suitable both for building retaining walls and acting as a constituent in cement grout. It is expected that the UNESCO/ICCROM program to save the churches will be completed successfully within the next five years or so.  相似文献

Two major features of weathering at Victorian damsites are joint controlled weathering and sub-basaltic weathering. These features have received attention in the literature from geologists generally engaged on engineering projects. The author has been fortunate to have been associated with geologic investigations at more than fifteen damsites where the features have been exposed.

Weathering at Australian sites is typical as it tends to occur where water is most often present. Barriers within or above the subject rock direct percolating waters to some locations and protect others.

The significant feature of joint controlled weathering is that the relevant barriers, the limonite-coated joints, are themselves the product of earlier weathering and provide the avenue for water penetration into the rock mass bound by the joints.

Sub-basaltic weathering appears to be due to the effect of the basalt cap in concentrating percolation through vertical joints.  相似文献

The present research aims to identify sources of ions and factors controlling the geochemical evolution of groundwater in an intermountain basin, comprising hill and valley fill region, of Outer Himalaya in Himachal Pradesh, India. The groundwater samples collected from 81 tubewells and handpumps are analyzed for major ions, trace metals and stable isotopes (δ18O and δD). Geochemically the dominant hydrochemical facies in the Una basin are Ca–HCO3, Ca–Mg–HCO3 and Na–Cl types at few locations. A relatively lower ionic concentration in the valley fills indicates dilution and low residence time of water to interact with the aquifer mass due to high porosity and permeability. The ionic ratios of 0.9, 0.8 and 3.8 to 5.7, respectively, for (Ca?+?Mg): HCO3, (Ca?+?Mg): (HCO3?+?SO4) and Na: Cl, suggests that ionic composition of groundwater is mainly controlled by rock weathering of, particularly by dissolution/precipitation of calcrete and calcite hosted in rock veins and Ca–Na feldspar hosted in conglomerate deposits derived from the Higher and Lesser Himalaya during the formation of Siwalik rocks. Although Na, K, NO3 and SO4 are introduced in the groundwater through agricultural practices, Na has also been introduced through ion exchange processes that have occurred during water–rock interaction, as indicated by negative CAI values. Factor analysis further suggests three major factors affecting the water chemistry of the area. The first two factors are associated with rock weathering while the third is anthropogenic processes associated with high nitrate and iron concentration. High concentrations of Fe and Mn ions that are exceeded that of WHO and BIS standards are also present at few locations. The recharge of groundwater in the Outer Himalaya is entirely through Indian Southwest Monsoon (ISM) and depleted ratios of δ18O/δD in valley region indicate infiltration from irrigation in recharging the groundwater and fractionation of isotopes of precipitation due to evaporation before infiltration. High d-excess values and inverse relation with δ18O are indicative of secondary evaporation of precipitation during recharge of groundwater.  相似文献

The bio-weathering of basalt, granite and gneiss was experimentally investigated in this study. These rock-forming minerals weathered more rapidly via the ubiquitous psychrotrophic heterotrophic bacteria. With indigenous bacteria of Bacillus spp. from sediments of Lake Baikal, we traced the degradation process of silicate minerals to understand the weathering processes occurring at the change temperature in the subsurface environment with organic input. The bacteria mediated dissolution of minerals was monitored with solution and solid chemistry, X-ray analyses as well as microscopic techniques. We determined the impact of the bacteria on the mineral surface and leaching of K, Ca, Mg, Si, Fe, and Al from silicate minerals. In the samples the release of major structural elements of silicates was used as an overall indicator of silicate mineral degradation at 4°C and 18°C from five medium exchanges over 255?days of rock bioleaching. The increase of temperature importantly affected the efficiency of Fe extraction from granite and basalt as well as Si extraction from granite and gneiss. In comparison with elemental extraction order at 4°C, Ca was substituted first by Fe or Si. It is evident that temperature influences rock microbial weathering and results in a change of elements extraction.  相似文献

The strontium isotope ratio in sea water has varied through geologic time owing to the input of strontium from rock weathering. To evaluate the possibility that Sr87Sr86 ratios might be altered during weathering, seven weathering profiles developed on Mesozoic arkoses located along the length of New Zealand were investigated. The rubidium-strontium-strontium isotope relations in these profiles give ‘isochron’ ages less than the ages of deposition of the arkoses. These ages appear to result from the weathering of a homogeneous source rock. The age calculated from the rubidium-strontium system (t′) is related to the original age (t) by the equation t′/t = (n ? 1)/n, where n is the ratio of the amounts of common and radiogenic strontium leached from the rock. Shales formed by the accumulation of these residual solids may inherit misleading isochron relationships which may not be erased during deposition or early diagenesis. The strontium which goes into solution and is transported to the sea is slightly less radiogenic than the strontium in the unweathered rock, while the residual clays may be much more radiogenic.  相似文献

We present here the first available estimations of chemical weathering and associated atmospheric CO2 consumption rates as well as mechanical erosion rate for the Lesser Antilles. The chemical weathering (100–120 t/km2/year) and CO2 consumption (1.1–1.4 × 106 mol/km2/year) rates are calculated after subtraction of the atmospheric and hydrothermal inputs in the chemical composition of the river dissolved loads. These rates thus reflect only the low-temperature basalt weathering. Mechanical erosion rates (approx. 800–4000 t/km2/year) are estimated by a geochemical mass balance between the dissolved and solid loads and mean unaltered rock. The calculated chemical weathering rates and associated atmospheric CO2 consumption rates are among the highest values worldwide but are still lower than those of other tropical volcanic islands and do not fit with the HCO3 concentration vs. 1/T correlation proposed by Dessert et al. (2001). The thick soils and explosive volcanism context of the Lesser Antilles are the two possible keys to this different weathering behaviour; the development of thick soils limits the chemical weathering and the presence of very porous pyroclastic flows allows an important water infiltration and thus subsurface weathering mechanisms, which are less effective for atmospheric CO2 consumption.  相似文献

Slope mass rating (SMR) is a commonly used geomechanical classification for the characterization of rock slopes. SMR is computed adding to basic rock mass rating (RMR) index, calculated by characteristic values of the rock mass, several correction factors depending of the discontinuity–slope parallelism, the discontinuity dip, the relative dip between discontinuity and slope and the employed excavation method. In this work a graphical method based on the stereographic representation of the discontinuities and the slope to obtain correction parameters of the SMR (F1, F2 and F3) is presented. This method allows the SMR correction factors to be easily obtained for a simple slope or for several practical applications as linear infrastructures slopes, open pit mining or trench excavations.  相似文献

黔西北上二叠统峨眉山玄武岩风化壳中铌富集机制初探   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
近年越来越多的研究显示,贵州西北一带的峨眉山玄武岩风化壳上存在一套富铌、锆、钛、镓、稀土的多金属矿层,主要与风化壳中的黏土岩有关,不过,其中有关铌的赋存状态和富集机制仍有待研究.文章对黏土岩物质来源做出厘定,认为风化壳黏土岩层主要来源于高钛的峨眉山玄武岩,铌、锆、稀土等元素也继承自玄武岩.铌主要赋存于铁铝质黏土岩中(w(Nb)100×10-6~250×10-6),含矿岩层中上部铌含量高,下部低,具体表现为w(Nb)自下而上,升高—(略微)降低—(再)升高的规律,尤以铁铝质黏土岩中铌含量最高.在峨眉山玄武岩喷发事件中,铌一方面随玄武岩喷出地表,在平缓低洼的盆地地带冷凝,另一方面酸性火山灰进入大气,形成酸雨并随之降落汇聚在先期成岩的低洼地区,形成酸性环境使原岩内的铌被侵蚀残留在原地.随着火山作用停止,酸雨不再产生,沉积环境中的水体因热水循环、海侵海退和大气降水与外界物质交换,酸性逐渐被中和乃至偏碱性,铌随黏土质沉积成岩,最终在玄武岩风化壳内富集.  相似文献

华南埃迪卡拉纪陡山沱组沉积于原始地球-生命系统向现代地球-生命系统过渡的关键时期,该套地层记录了地质历史时期一次大规模成磷事件,但关于该次成磷事件中磷元素的来源仍存在诸多争议。浅海区磷元素主要来源于由河流搬运的陆表含磷矿物风化产物及上升流作用所带来的其他海域含磷水体,这两种来源可以通过全岩碎屑元素(Al、Fe、Th等)和稀土元素的含量及其分布特征进行区分。本文通过对上扬子地区乡党坪剖面和四斗坪剖面的陡山沱组主、微量元素特征的综合分析,恢复了该地区的物源体系及其风化作用过程。较高的P2O5-Al2O3、P2O5-Fe2O3相关性,表明该时期磷来源于陆地风化而非上升流;较低的Th/Co、La/Sc、Th/Cr等比值,TiO2-Zr相关性以及Th-Hf-Co、La-Th-Sc三角图分布关系,表明研究区内陡山沱组的物源体系主要为玄武岩;较高的化学蚀变指数(CIA)和较低的Sr/Cu值,表明物源区当时以温暖湿润气候为主,经历了中等程度的化学风化作用。对不同类型火山岩中磷含量的大数据分析结果表明,镁铁质火山岩中的磷含量远高于长英质火山岩,故陡山沱组沉积期间较为强烈的玄武岩风化作用大大提高了浅海陆架区的磷沉积通量以及海水磷浓度水平,为磷块岩的大规模形成提供了丰富磷质来源,并改善了早期海洋的磷循环,促进了全球规模的成磷事件以及大型后生动物的辐射。  相似文献

The Cappadocia region of Inner Anatolia has produced very distinct cultures since the Bronze Age (6500 BC). The settlers were accustomed to hew their house in massive to thickly-bedded tuffs. A thick succession of lapillistone, welded tuff, silicified tuff, clayey tuff, agglomerate, and lava flows constitutes the majority of the Late Tertiary-Quaternary-aged volcanic units of this region. Most of the historical structures hewn into the thick to massive layers have preserved their original integrity; whereas most of the structures carved into a medium- to thinly-bedded sequence have failed. Bedding planes are the primary discontinuity type in the region, and must be accommodated in geotechnical designs. Joints and normal faults present the second prominent discontinuity types, which are very widely spaced. Bedding planes beyond the structural influence of major fault zones dip around 10°, due to syndepositional deformation during regional uplift. In addition to the thickness of layers, the engineering characteristics of the persistent discontinuities have a great influence on the orientation and dimension of au underground cavern in Cappadocia.

Construction of this cavern, the International Underground Congress Hall, commenced in January 1993 in Cappadocia, south of the town Avanos. The initially proposed location and orientation of the structure were completely changed and readjusted according to the geotechnical model prepared in September 1993. The geotechnical re-design of the structure was then accomplished through a series of numerical analyses carried out using a Boundary Element technique. The structure in the former proposal was found susceptible to kinematic collapse of joint-bounded rock blocks, possible breakup of thinly bedded and very weakly cemented tuff layers, and quick erosion by groundwater flowing along persistent discontinuities. Moreover, groundwater percolating along discontinuities requires sophisticated engineering measures to maintain stability wherever cleft-water pressure builds up.  相似文献

Sr/Ca ratios in the clay (< 2 μ) weathering products of basalt rocks from the Lake Kinneret drainage basin were found to be very similar to the ratios in the rocks, indicating similar depletion intensities for the two elements. In the clays from the scoriae and some lapilli tuffs the ratios were found to be somewhat higher than in the corresponding rocks, indicating preferential retention of strontium in the clays. The ratio in drainage water from these areas was much lower than that obtained by mass balance calculations.The Sr/Ca ratio in Jordan river water draining primarily limestone areas is 2.3 · 10?3. Very high Sr/Ca ratios in Lake Kinneret water were attributed to the influence of saline sublacustrine springs. The carbonate fraction from recent lake sediments was shown to have the Sr/Ca ratios characteristic for calcite precipitated biogenically in marine environments. The relative enrichment in strontium of the lake water was explained by the intensive precipitation of carbonates with low strontium distribution coefficients.  相似文献
