In coastal ecosystems, suspension-feeding bivalves can remove nitrogen though uptake and assimilation or enhanced denitrification. Bivalves may also retain nitrogen through increased mineralization and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA). This study investigated the effects of oyster reefs and clam aquaculture on denitrification, DNRA, and nutrient fluxes (NO x , NH4 +, O2). Core incubations were conducted seasonally on sediments adjacent to restored oyster reefs (Crassostrea virginica), clam aquaculture beds (Mercenaria mercenaria) which contained live clams, and bare sediments from Smith Island Bay, Virginia, USA. Denitrification was significantly higher at oyster reef sediments and clam aquaculture site than bare sediment in the summer; however, DNRA was not enhanced. The clam aquaculture site had the highest ammonium production due to clam excretion. While oyster reef and bare sediments exhibited seasonal differences in rate processes, there was no effect of season on denitrification, or dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) or ammonium flux at the clam aquaculture site. This suggests that farm management practices or bivalve metabolism and excretion may override seasonal differences. When water column nitrate concentration was elevated, denitrification increased in clam aquaculture site and oyster reef sediments but not in bare sediment; DNRA was only stimulated at the clam aquaculture site. This, along with a significant and positive relationship between denitrification and sediment organic matter, suggests that labile carbon limited nitrate reduction at the bare sediment site. Bivalve systems can serve as either net sinks or sources of nitrogen to coastal ecosystems, depending mainly on the type of bivalve, location, and management practices.  相似文献

Human activities contribute different pollutants to receiving waters, often with significant variations in time and space. Therefore, integrating multiple parameters of water quality and their spatiotemporal variations is necessary to identify the pollution characteristics. Based on the water quality monitoring data with 12 parameters for 2 years at 22 sampling sites in the Cao-E River system, eastern China, the projection pursuit method was used to project all parameters and their temporal variations into a one-dimensional vector through two projections. Accordingly, we could easily assess the comprehensive water quality in different sampling sites and then classify their water pollution features. Factor analysis was then used to identify the pollution characteristics and potential sources. Results showed that all sampling sites for the river system could be classified into four groups: headwater sites (HS), agricultural nonpoint sources pollution sites (ANPS), point sources pollution sites (PSPS), and mixed sources pollution sites. Water quality in HS was good, containing only a few nutrients from the woodland runoff and soil erosion. For ANPS, the main pollutants were dissolved phosphorus, total P, and nitrate nitrogen (NO3 ?-N), mainly from farming land. For PSPS, ammonium nitrogen (NH4 +-N) and organic pollutants originated from industrial and municipal sewage. In HS and ANPS, NO3 ?-N was the main form of nitrogen, and a high ratio of NO3 ?-N/NH4 +-N was a remarkable characteristic, whereas NH4 +-N was the main form of nitrogen in PSPS. Except in HS, water quality in the other groups could not meet the local water quality control standard. Finally, suggestions were proposed for water pollution control for the different groups.  相似文献

In September 2011 and March 2012, benthic nutrient fluxes were measured in the San Francisco Bay Delta, across a gradient from above the confluence of the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers to Suisun Bay. Dark and illuminated core incubation techniques were used to measure rates of denitrification, nutrient fluxes (phosphate, ammonium, nitrate), and oxygen fluxes. While benthic nutrient fluxes have been assessed at several sites in northern San Francisco Bay, such data across a Delta–Bay transect have not previously been determined. Average September rates of DIN (nitrate, nitrite, ammonium) flux were net positive across all sites, while March DIN flux indicated net uptake of DIN at some sites. Denitrification rates based on the N2/Ar ratio approach were between 0.6 and 1.0 mmol m?2 day?1, similar to other mesotrophic estuarine sediments. Coupled nitrification–denitrification was the dominant denitrification pathway in September, with higher overlying water nitrate concentrations in March resulting in denitrification driven by nitrate flux into the sediments. Estimated benthic microalgal productivity was variable and surprisingly high in Delta sediments and may represent a major source of labile carbon to this ecosystem. Variable N/P stoichiometry was observed in these sediments, with deviations from Redfield driven by processes such as denitrification, variable light/dark uptake of nutrients by microalgae, and adsorption of soluble reactive phosphorus.  相似文献

Sediment denitrification was monthly evaluated in two tropical coastal lagoons with different trophic states using the 15N isotope pairing technique. Denitrification rates were very low in both environments, always <5.0 μmol N2 m?2 h?1 and were not significantly different between them. Oxygen consumption varied from 426 to 4248 μmol O2 m?2 h?1 and was generally three times higher in the meso-eutrophic than the oligotrophic lagoon. The low denitrification activity was ascribed to both low water NO3 ? concentrations (<2.0 μM) and little nitrate supply from nitrification. There was no correlation of denitrification with nitrate or ammonium fluxes. Sediments in temperate environments with similar oxygen consumption rates usually presented a higher proportion of nitrification–denitrification rates. Sediment oxygen consumption was a good predictor of sediment denitrification in both studied lagoons.  相似文献

Filter-feeding bivalves, like oysters, couple pelagic primary production with benthic microbial processes by consuming plankton from the water column and depositing unassimilated material on sediment. Conceptual models suggest that at low to moderate oyster densities, this deposition can stimulate benthic denitrification by providing denitrifying bacteria with organic carbon and nitrogen (N). While enhanced denitrification has been found at oyster reefs, data from oyster aquaculture are limited and equivocal. This study measured seasonal rates of denitrification, as well as dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA), and dissolved inorganic N fluxes at a rack and bag eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) aquaculture farm. Consistent with models, denitrification was enhanced within the farm, with an average annual increase of 350% compared to a reference site. However, absolute denitrification rates were low relative to other coastal systems, reaching a maximum of 19.2 μmol m?2 h?1. Denitrification appeared to be nitrate (NO3 ?) limited, likely due to inhibited nitrification caused by sediment anoxia. Denitrification may also have been limited by competition for NO3 ? with DNRA, which accounted for an average of 76% of NO3 ? reduction. Consequently, direct release of ammonium (NH4 +) from mineralization to the water column was the most significant benthic N pathway, with seasonal rates exceeding 900 μmol m?2 h?1 within the farm. The enhanced N processes were spatially limited however, with significantly higher rates directly under oysters, compared to in between oyster racks. For commercial aquaculture farms like this, with moderate oyster densities (100–200 oysters m?2), denitrification may be enhanced, but nonetheless limited by biodeposition-induced sediment anoxia. The resulting shift in the sediment N balance toward processes that regenerate reactive N to the water column rather than remove N is an important consideration for water quality.  相似文献

Benthic nitrogen (N) cycling was investigated at six stations along a transect traversing the Peruvian oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) at 11°S. An extensive dataset including porewater concentration profiles and in situ benthic fluxes of nitrate (NO3), nitrite (NO2) and ammonium (NH4+) was used to constrain a 1-D reaction-transport model designed to simulate and interpret the measured data at each station. Simulated rates of nitrification, denitrification, anammox and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) by filamentous large sulfur bacteria (e.g. Beggiatoa and Thioploca) were highly variable throughout the OMZ yet clear trends were discernible. On the shelf and upper slope (80-260 m water depth) where extensive areas of bacterial mats were present, DNRA dominated total N turnover (?2.9 mmol N m−2 d−1) and accounted for ?65% of NO3 + NO2 uptake by the sediments from the bottom water. Nonetheless, these sediments did not represent a major sink for dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN = NO3 + NO2 + NH4+) since DNRA reduces NO3 and, potentially NO2, to NH4+. Consequently, the shelf and upper slope sediments were recycling sites for DIN due to relatively low rates of denitrification and high rates of ammonium release from DNRA and ammonification of organic matter. This finding contrasts with the current opinion that sediments underlying OMZs are a strong sink for DIN. Only at greater water depths (300-1000 m) did the sediments become a net sink for DIN. Here, denitrification was the major process (?2 mmol N m−2 d−1) and removed 55-73% of NO3 and NO2 taken up by the sediments, with DNRA and anammox accounting for the remaining fraction. Anammox was of minor importance on the shelf and upper slope yet contributed up to 62% to total N2 production at the 1000 m station. The results indicate that the partitioning of oxidized N (NO3, NO2) into DNRA or denitrification is a key factor determining the role of marine sediments as DIN sinks or recycling sites. Consequently, high measured benthic uptake rates of oxidized N within OMZs do not necessarily indicate a loss of fixed N from the marine environment.  相似文献

Fate of riverine nitrate entering a well defined turbid estuary receiving discharges from the Atchafalaya River, a distributary of the Mississippi River, was determined. Seasonal distribution of NO3 and its transformations were measured in Four League Bay (9,300 ha). Denitrification was estimated by incubating wet samples in the presence of acetylene and monitoring N2O production. The annual sediment accumulation of N was also determined within the bay and within the adjacent marshes. Nitrogen accumulation ranged from 6.0 to 23 gN per m2 per yr on the marsh and 6.1 to 11.2 gN per m2 per yr in the bay. Denitrification in this system was controlled by the availability of NO3 ? with fluxes ranging from 2 to 70 ngN per g per hr. The annual (N2O +N2)-N emission was equivalent to 142 and 120 μg per g or 2.1 and 1.7 gN per m2 from the 5 bay and 5 marsh stations, respectively. Approximately 1.95×105 kgN, predominantly as N2, is being returned to the atmosphere via denitrification. We estimate this to be equivalent to 50% of the riverine NO3 ? entering this estuary. A significant amount was also assimilated within the estuary.  相似文献

Assessing nitrogen dynamics in the estuarine landscape is challenging given the unique effects of individual habitats on nitrogen dynamics. We measured net N2 fluxes, sediment oxygen demand, and fluxes of ammonium and nitrate seasonally from five major estuarine habitats: salt marshes, seagrass beds (SAV), oyster reefs, and intertidal and subtidal flats. Net N2 fluxes ranged from 332?±?116 μmol?N-N2?m?2?h?1 from oyster reef sediments in the summer to ?67?±?4 μmol?N-N2?m?2?h?1 from SAV in the winter. Oyster reef sediments had the highest rate of N2 production of all habitats. Dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) was measured during the summer and winter. DNRA was low during the winter and ranged from 4.5?±?3.0 in subtidal flats to 104?±?34 μmol?15NH 4 + ?m?2?h?1 in oyster reefs during the summer. Annual denitrification, accounting for seasonal differences in inundation and light, ranged from 161.1?±?19.2 mmol?N-N2?m?2?year?1 for marsh sediments to 509.9?±?122.7 mmol?N-N2?m?2?year?1 for SAV sediments. Given the current habitat distribution in our study system, an estimated 28.3?×?106?mol of N are removed per year or 76 % of estimated watershed nitrogen load. These results indicate that changes in the area and distribution of habitats in the estuarine landscape will impact ecosystem function and services.  相似文献

In this study rates of oxygen, ammonium (NH4 +), nitrate (NO3 ), nitrite (NO2 ), and nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes, nitrogen (N) fixation, nitrification, and denitrification were compared between two intertidal sites for which there is an abundant global literature, muddy and sandy sediments, and two sites representing the rocky intertidal zone where biogeochemical processes have scarcely been investigated. In almost all sites oxygen production rates greatly exceeded oxygen consumption rates. During daylight, NH4 + and NO3 uptake rates together with ammonification could supply the different N requirements of the primary producer communities at all four sites; N assimilation by benthic or epilithic primary producers was the major process of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) removal; N fixation, nitrification, and denitrification were minor processes in the overall light DIN cycle. At night, distinct DIN cycling processes took place in the four environments, denitrification rates ranged from 9 ± 2 to 360 ± 30 μmol N2 m−2 h−1, accounting for 10–48% of the water column NO3 uptake; nitrification rates varied from 0 to 1712 ± 666 μmol NH4 + m−2 h−1. A conceptual model of N cycle dynamics showed major differences between intertidal sediment and rocky sites in terms of the mean rates of DIN net fluxes and the processes involved, with rocky biofilm showing generally higher fluxes. Of particular significance, the intertidal rocky biofilms released 10 times the amount of N2O produced in intertidal sediments (up to 17 ± 6 μmol N2O m−2 h−1), representing the highest N2O release rates ever recorded for marine systems. The biogeochemical contributions of intertidal rocky substrata to estuarine and coastal processes warrant future detailed investigation.  相似文献

The respiratory reduction of nitrate (denitrification) is acknowledged as the most important process that converts biologically available nitrogen to gaseous dinitrogen (N2) in marine ecosystems. Recent findings, however, indicate that anaerobic ammonium oxidation by nitrite (anammox) may be an important pathway for N2 formation and N removal in coastal marine sediments and in anoxic water columns of the oceans. In the present study, we explored this novel mechanism during N mineralization by 15N amendments (single and coupled additions of 15NH4+, 14NO3 and 15NO3) to surface sediments with a wide range of characteristics and overall reactivity. Patterns of 29/30N2 production in the pore water during closed sediment incubations demonstrated anammox at all 7 of the investigated sites. Stoichiometric calculations revealed that 4% to 79% of total N2 production was due to this novel route. The relative importance of anammox for N2 release was inversely correlated with remineralized solute production, benthic O2 consumption, and surface sediment Chl a. The observed correlations indicate competition between reductants for pore water nitrite during early diagenesis and that additional factors (e.g. availability of Mn-oxides), superimposed on overall patterns of diagenetic activity, are important for determining absolute and relative rates of anammox in coastal marine sediments.  相似文献

High concentrations of ammonium nitrogen released from tannery sludge during storage in open air may cause nitrogen pollution to soil and groundwater. To study the transformation mechanism of NH4+-N by nitrifying functional bacteria in tannery sludge contaminated soils, a series of contaminated soil culture experiments were conducted in this study. The contents of ammonium nitrogen (as NH4+-N), nitrite nitrogen (as NO2?-N) and nitrate nitrogen (as NO3?-N) were analyzed during the culture period under different conditions of pollution load, soil particle and redox environment. Sigmodial equation was used to interpret the change of NO3?-N with time in contaminated soils. The abundance variations of nitrifying functional genes (amoA and nxrA) were also detected using the real-time quantitative fluorescence PCR method. The results show that the nitrification of NH4+-N was aggravated in the contaminated silt soil and fine sand under the condition of lower pollution load, finer particle size and more oxidizing environment. The sigmodial equation well fitted the dynamic accumulation curve of the NO3?-N content in the tannery sludge contaminated soils. The Cr(III) content increased with increasing pollution load, which inhibited the reproduction and activity of nitrifying bacteria in the soils, especially in coarse-grained soil. The accumulation of NO2?-N contents became more obvious with the increase of pollution load in the fine sand, and only 41.5% of the NH4+-N was transformed to NO3?-N. The redox environment was the main factor affecting nitrification process in the soil. Compared to the aerobic soil environment, the transformation of NH4+-N was significantly inhibited under anaerobic incubation condition, and the NO3?-N contents decreased by 37.2%, 61.9% and 91.9% under low, medium and high pollution loads, respectively. Nitrification was stronger in the silt soil since its copy number of amoA and nxrA genes was two times larger than that of fine sand. Moreover, the copy numbers of amoA and nxrA genes in the silt soil under the aerobic environment were 2.7 times and 2.2 times larger than those in the anaerobic environment. The abundance changes of the amoA and nxrA functional genes have a positive correlation with the nitrification intensity in the tannery sludge-contaminated soil.  相似文献

The stable isotope nitrogen-15 (15N) is a robust indicator of nitrogen (N) source, and the joint use of δ15N and δ18O–NO3 ? values can provide more useful information about nitrate source discrimination and N cycle process. The δ15N and δ18O–NO3 ? values, as well as major ion tracers, from Taihu Lake in east China were investigated to identify the primary nitrate sources and assess nitrate biogeochemical process in the present study. The results show that the nitrate concentration in West Taihu Lake (WTL) was generally higher than those in East Taihu Lake (ETL) and its upstream inflow rivers. The NO3 ?/Cl? value combined with mapping of δ15N–NO3 ? and NO3 ? concentration suggest that the mixing process should play a major effect in WTL, and denitrification was the dominant N transformation process in WTL. A linear relationship of close to ~1: 2 was observed between δ15N–NO3 ? and δ18O–NO3 ? values in WTL, confirming the occurrence of denitrification in WTL. The δ15N–NO3 ? data imply that sewage and manure were the principal nitrate sources in WTL and its feeder rivers, while the nitrate in ETL might derive from soil organic nitrogen and atmospheric deposition. The δ18O–NO3 ? data indicate most of nitrate from microbial nitrification of organic nitrogen matter possibly make a significant contribution to the lake.  相似文献

Sulfide Inhibition of Nitrate Removal in Coastal Sediments   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Microbial nitrate (NO3) removal via denitrification (DNF) at high sulfide (H2S) concentrations was compared in sediment from a coastal freshwater pond in a developed area that receives salt-water influx during storm events, and a saline pond proximal to an undeveloped estuary. Sediments were incubated with added SO42− (1,000 μg per gram dry weight basis (gdw)) to determine whether acid volatile sulfides (AVS) were formed. DNF in the sediments was measured with NO3–N (300 μg gdw−1) alone, and with NO3–N and H2S (1,000 μg S2− gdw−1). SO42− addition to the freshwater sediments resulted in AVS formation (970 ± 307 μg S gdw−1) similar to the wetland with no added SO42− (986 ± 156 μg S gdw−1). DNF rates measured with no added H2S were greater in the freshwater than the wetland site (10.6 ± 0.6 vs. 6.4 ± 0.1 μg N2O–N gdw−1 h−1, respectively). High H2S concentrations retained NH4–N in the undeveloped wetland and retained NO3–N in the developed freshwater site, suggesting that potential salt-water influx may reduce the ability of the freshwater sediments to remove NO3–N.  相似文献

Subterranean estuaries are highly dynamic in processing dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN). Here we investigate DIN turnover in surface sediments (0–20 cm depth) at the higher, medium and lower intertidal of a seepage face, i.e., the outer “mouth” of the subterranean estuary, during four consecutive seasons in Sanggou Bay, China. Throughout the studied period, ammonium (NH4+) and nitrite (NO2?) concentrations in the sampled porewaters did not vary significantly with depth or season. In contrast, peaks in porewater nitrate (NO3?) concentration and decreases in δ15N-NO3? and δ18O-NO3? were observed in the 15–20 cm depth (bottom) sediment, particularly during summer and autumn. Coupled with NO3? production, the sediment total nitrogen was also markedly peaking in the bottom layer of the studied seepage face. Together with abundant heterotrophic microbes in the sediment, this NO3? accumulation was linked to a reaction chain including organic matter decomposition, ammonification and nitrification. During winter, porewater enrichment in total nitrogen occurred closer to the surface of the seepage face but triggered also active NO3? production. This pattern reinforced the importance of pelagic organic matter supply on NO3? production. In the shallower depths of the seepage face (<12 cm), active net NO3? removal occurred except in winter. The isotopic fractionation (δ15N-NO3? and δ18O-NO3?) and metagenomic results revealed denitrification as the main pathway for NO3? reduction. Biological assimilation from benthic primary producers may also consume a fraction of NO3? at the sediment water interface. Both NO3? production and removal significantly varied in magnitude with season (?13.6 to 6.2 nmol cm?3 h?1). Substrate supply was the key driver for nitrate cycling, as evidenced by the high NO3? production rate in spring by comparison to autumn. The highest NO3? turnover rates were found in summer, suggesting the combined influence of advection rates and sediment microbiota composition. In spite of active removal (peak NO3? removal capability: 61%), a significant amount of NO3? was still transported from the seepage face into the bay waters. The magnitude of NO3? fluxes ranged from 312 to 476 kg N d?1, accounting for approximately 15% of the total exogenous NO3? loading into the bay. NO3? isotopic fingerprint revealed chemical fertilizer as the main source of terrestrial NO3? in SGD, highlighting the importance of land use to coastal system nitrogen budgets.  相似文献

There are many reports of NO3 ? violating safety standards in the neighboring areas of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), which have become the bottleneck of the CAFOs development. The high concentration of ammonium nitrogen (NH4 +-N), which transforms into nitrate nitrogen (NO3 ?-N) through nitrification, and then leaches into the groundwater, is a potential threat to the environment. Adsorption and desorption characteristics of ammonium can reduce the amount of NH4 +-N in soils, which effectively prevents or slows down the nitrate leaching. Researches on the adsorption and desorption of ammonium mainly focus on the simple NH4 + solution. Researches on the adsorption and desorption from hogpen wastewater are few, which is a complex system coexisting with many ions. In this paper, ammonium was selected as the object of pollutant, a batch of equilibration experiments was conducted to evaluate the adsorption–desorption and its kinetics in eight loams, typically found in Northern China, irrigated with original wastewater (OW) and reclaimed wastewater (RW) from intensive hogpen and a simple one consisting of clean water (CW). This study showed that the Freundlich and Langmuir model described the ammonium adsorption properties very well in multi-ion coexistensive system of hogpen wastewater; the ammonium adsorbed amount in the corresponding matrices followed by OW < RW < CW tendency, although the adsorption model parameters had great diversity. The adsorbed amount increased as the adsorption time went on and then approached to a stable state. CW had the shortest reaction time to reach equilibrium, whereas OW had the longest. The normal adsorption kinetics equation could not depict the adsorption behavior of loams but characterized by the ExpAssoc equation well. The study could provide references for the wastewater treatment and recycling, and rural water pollution controlling.  相似文献

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) flux dynamics were examined in the context of other biogeochemical cycles in intertidal sediments inhabited by benthic microalgae. In August 2003, gross oxygenic photosynthetic (GOP) rates, oxygen penetration depths, and benthic flux rates were quantified at seven sites along the Duplin River, GA, USA. Sediments contained abundant benthic microalgal (BMA) biomass with a maximum chlorophyll a concentration of 201 mg chl a m?2. Oxygen microelectrodes were used to determine GOP rates and O2 penetration depth, which were tightly correlated with light intensity. Baseline and 15N-nitrate amended benthic flux core incubations were employed to quantify benthic fluxes and to investigate the impact of BMA on sediment water exchange under nitrogen (N)-limited and N-replete conditions. Unamended sediments exhibited tight coupling between GOP and respiration and served as a sink for water column dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and a source of silicate and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). The BMA response to the N addition indicated sequential nutrient limitation, with N limitation followed by silicate limitation. In diel (light–dark) incubations, biological assimilation accounted for 83% to 150% of the nitrate uptake, while denitrification (DNF) and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) accounted for <7%; in contrast, under dark conditions, DNF and DNRA accounted for >40% of the NO3 ? uptake. The N addition shifted the metabolic status of the sediments from a balance of autotrophy and heterotrophy to net autotrophy under diel conditions, and the sediments served as a sink for water column DIN, silicate, and DIC but became a source of DOC, suggesting that the increased BMA production was decoupled from sediment bacterial consumption of DOC.  相似文献

Sediment-water exchanges of ammonium (NH4 +), nitrate + nitrite (NOx ?), filterable reactive phosphorus (FRP, primarily ortho-phosphate), and oxygen (O2) under aphotic (heterotrophic) conditions were determined at 2–5 stations in the Neuse River Estuary, from 1987 to 1989. Shallow (1 m), sandy stations were sampled along the salinity gradient. Fluxes from deep (>2 m) sites were compared to the shallow sites in two salinity zones. Grain size became finer and organic content increased with depth in the oligohaline zone but not in the mesohaline zone. Net release of NH4 + and FRP occurred at all sites. Fluxes varied from slight uptake to releases of 200–500 μmol m?2 h?1 (NH4 +) and 150–900 μmol m?2 h?1 (FRP). Net NOx ? exchange was near zero, but were ±100 μmol m?2 h?1 over the year. Release of NH4 + and FRP from the shallow sandy stations decreased with distance down the estuary, but O2 uptake did not change. The deeper oligohaline site had twofold higher rates of NH4 + and FRP release and O2 uptake than the shallow site, but no differences occurred between depths in the mesohaline zone. Temperature and organic content were important controls for all fluxes, but water column NOx ? concentration was also important in regulating NOx ? exchanges. Ratios of oxygen consumption to NH4 + release were near the predicted ratio (Redfield model) at oligohaline sites but increased down estuary at mesohaline sites. This may be due to greater nitrification rates promoted by autotrophy in the sediments.  相似文献

The Silurian bedrock aquifer constitutes a major aquifer system for groundwater supply across the Ontario province in Canada. The application of natural and industrial fertilizers near urban centers has led to groundwater NO3-N concentrations that sometimes have exceeded the drinking water limit, posing a threat to the usage of groundwater for the human consumption. Therefore, there is a growing interest and concern about how nitrate is being leached, transported and potentially attenuated in bedrock aquifers. This study assesses the local distribution of groundwater NO3 in the up-gradient area of two historically impacted municipal wells, called Carter Wells, in the City of Guelph, Canada, in order to evaluate the potential nitrate attenuation mechanisms, using both groundwater geochemical and isotopic analysis (3H, δ15N-NO3, δ18O-NO3, δ18O-SO4, δ34S-SO4) and a detailed vertical hydrogeological and geochemical bedrock characterization. The results indicate that probably the main source of nitrate to the Carter Wells is the up-gradient Arkell Research Station (ARS), an agricultural research facility where manure has been historically applied. The overburden and bedrock groundwater with high NO3 concentrations at the ARS exhibits a manure-related δ15N and δ18O signature, isotopically similar to the high nitrate in the down-gradient groundwater from domestic wells and from the Carter Wells. The nitrate spatial distribution appears to be influenced and controlled by the geology, in which more permeable rock is found in the Guelph Formation which in turn is related to most of the high NO3 groundwater. The presence of an underlying low permeability Eramosa Formation favors the development of oxygen-depleted conditions, a key factor for the occurrence of denitrification. Groundwater with low NO3-N concentrations associated with more oxygen-limited conditions and coincident with high SO42− concentrations are related to more enriched δ15N and δ18O values in NO3 and to more depleted δ34S and δ18O values in SO42−, suggesting that denitrification coupled with pyrite oxidation is taking place. The presence of macro crystalized and disseminated pyrite especially in the Eramosa Formation, can support the occurrence of this attenuation process. Moreover, based on tritium analysis, some denitrification can occur in shallow bedrock and within relatively short residence times, associated with less permeable conditions in depth which facilitates oxygen consumption through sulfide oxidation. The role of denitrification mediated by organic carbon cannot be discarded at the study site. This study suggests that the geological configuration and particularly the presence of low permeability Eramosa Formation can play an important role on nitrate natural attenuation, which may serve as a decision factor on defining the bedrock water supply system for both domestic and municipal purposes.  相似文献

We report 15N/14N ratios of porewater nitrate in sediments from the Bering Sea basin, where microbial nitrate reduction has been identified as a significant sink for fixed nitrogen (N). Strong 15N enrichment in porewater nitrate is observed as one goes deeper in the sediments and nitrate concentration decreases (δ15N generally reaches 25-35‰). Analysis of profiles with a one-dimensional diffusion-reaction model yields organism-scale isotope effects for dissimilatory nitrate reduction (εcell) of 11‰ to 30‰, in the same range as measured in previous studies of cultures and the marine and lacustrine water column. Estimates of εcell, while uncertain, show a negative correlation with bottom water [O2]; we propose that this relates to the at the depth of denitrification. The N isotope effect at the scale of nitrate sediment-water exchange (εapp) is ∼0‰ in two unreactive deep sites and is typically <3‰ at more reactive sites at various depths. εapp is much lower than εcell because nitrate consumption is nearly complete at the sediment depth of denitrification, minimizing the escape of 15N-enriched nitrate from the sediments. In reactive sediments, this is due to rapid denitrification, while in less reactive sediments, it is due to greater diffusive distances for nitrate to the depth of denitrification. The data suggest that low bottom water [O2] tends to yield more complete expression of εcell at the sediment-water scale, due to higher at the depth of denitrification. While porewater ammonium-N isotopes were not measured, our porewater model suggests that, in sediments with high organic matter supply and/or low-[O2] bottom waters, the efflux and subsequent oxidation of ammonium enriched in 15N by incomplete nitrification can significantly enhance the total net isotope effect of sedimentary N loss (εsed, equivalent to εapp but including ammonium fluxes). Model analysis of representative sedimentary environments suggests a global mean εsed of ∼4‰ (∼2‰ if restricted to seafloor below 1 km depth).  相似文献

The supply of nutrients from surface and subsurface water flow into the root zone was measured in a developing barrier island marsh in Virginia. We hypothesize that high production of tall-formSpartina alterniflora in the lower intertidal zone is due to a greater nitrogen input supplied by a larger subsurface flux. Individual nitrogen inputs to the tall-form and short-formS. alterniflora root zones were calculated from water flow rates into the root zone and the nutrient concentration corresponding to the source of the flow. Total dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) input (as ammonium and nitrate) was then calculated using a summation of the hourly nutrient inputs to the root zone over the entire tidal cycle based on hydrologic and nutrient data collected throughout the growing season (April–August) of 1993 and 1994. Additionally, horizontal water flow into the lower intertidal marsh was reduced experimentally to determine its effects on nutrient input and plant growth. Total ammonium (NH4 +) input to the tall-formS. alterniflora root zone (168 μmoles 6 h?1) was significantly greater relative to the short-form (45 μmoles 6 h?1) during flood tide. Total NH4 + input was not significantly different between growth forms during ebb tide, and total nitrate (NO3 ?) and total DIN input were not significantly different between growth forms during either tidal stage. During tidal flooding, vertical flow from below the root zone accounted for 71% and horizontal flow from the adjacent mudflat accounted for 19% of the total NH4 + input to the tall-formS. alterniflora root zone. Infiltration of flooding water accounted for 15% more of the total NO3 ? input relative to the total NH4 + input at both zones on flood tide. During ebb tide, vertical flow from below the root zone still accounted for the majority of NH4 + and NO3 ? input to both growth forms. After vertical flow, horizontal subsurface flow from upgradient accounted for the next largest percentages of NH4 + and NO3 ? input to both growth forms during ebb tide. After 2 yr of interrupted subsurface horizontal flow to the tall-formS. alterniflora root zone, height and nitrogen content of leaf tissue of treatment plants were only slightly, but significantly, lower than control plants. The results suggest that a dynamic supply of DIN (as influenced by subsurface water flows) is a more accurate depiction of nutrient supply to macrophytes in this developing marsh, relative to standing stock nutrient concentrations. The dynamic subsurface supply of DIN may play a role in spatial patterns of abovegroundS. alterniflora production, but determination of additional nitrogen inputs and the role of belowground production on nitrogen demand need to also be considered.  相似文献
