Summary. A possible mechanism for the occurrence of slow earthquakes is investigated by calculating numerical solutions for the dynamical rupture process on a quasi-three-dimensional fault with heterogeneous frictional strengths. Experimental friction laws for the dependence of sliding frictional stress on slip velocity, which are based on the cohesive properties of fault asperities, are taken into considerations.
It is found that the applied stress does not drop very rapidly with time and the rupture velocity remarkably decreases as the dependence on slip-velocity becomes smaller. These deceleration effects for the rupture propagation are greatly enhanced with increasing heterogeneities in the distribution of frictional strength and as the initial shear stress has lower levels with respect to the average strength. For these cases, the growth of rupture is extremely slow in a nucleus region with the dimension as large as 10 times the initial rupture length, and gains a terminal velocity dependent on the above factors. The displacement-time function becomes noticeably extended in these cases, and indicates a stick—slip-like phenomena in the extended time interval for a strongly heterogeneous fault.
It seems that these results could explain the characteristic features of slow earthquakes.  相似文献

We present a theory for the radiation of high-frequency waves by earthquake faults. We model the fault as a planar region in which the stress drops to the kinematic friction during slip. This model is entirely equivalent to a shear crack. For two-dimensional fault models we show that the high frequencies originate from the stress and slip velocity concentrations in the vicinity of the fault's edges. These stress concentrations radiate when the crack expands with accelerated motion. The most efficient generation of high-frequency waves occurs when the rupture velocity changes abruptly. In this case, the displacement spectrum has an ω-2 behaviour at high frequencies. The excitation is proportional to the intensity of the stress concentration near the crack tips and to the change in the focusing factor due to rupture velocity. We extend these two-dimensional results to more general three-dimensional fault models in the case when the rupture velocity changes simultaneously on the rupture front. Results are similar to those described for two-dimensional faults. We apply the theory to the case of a circular fault that grows at constant velocity and stops suddenly. The present theory is in excellent agreement with a numerical solution of the same problem.
Our results provide upper bounds to the high-frequency radiation from more realistic models in which rupture velocity does not change suddenly. The ω-2 is the minimum possible decay at high frequencies for any crack model of the source.  相似文献

Summary. Two-dimensional crack problems in elastic homogeneous isotropic media are considered which describe rupture over a fault surface characterized by non-uniform stress drop. Solutions can be found in which the stress field is finite at the crack tips and the rupture surface is not assigned a priori , but is part of the solution. These crack models are found to be consistent with the frictional stress threshold criterion for slip arrest over pre-existing fault surfaces. A crack is found to stop when its contribution to the stress field is opposite to the stress drop at the crack tips. The quasi-static propagation of a crack up to the arrest configuration is studied in terms of the minimum energy principle. The crack spontaneously propagates in such a way as to make the value of the stress intensity factor at one tip equal to the value at the other tip. Furthermore a tip propagating in a region with higher friction is found to move more slowly than the other tip propagating in a region with lower friction. Simple criteria for fracture arrest are derived, in terms of a properly averaged stress drop. Piecewise constant stress drop profiles are explicitly considered yielding a variety of solutions which can be applied to modelling asperities or barriers over a fault plane. The evaluation of the amount of the energy released during the quasi-static crack propagation shows that stopping phases cannot be efficiently radiated if the crack comes to rest in a low friction region.  相似文献

The Middle Durance fault system, southeastern France, is a slow active fault that produced moderate-size historical seismic events and shows evidence of at least one   M w ≳ 6.5  event in the last 29 000 yr. Based on dynamic rupture simulation, we propose earthquake scenarios that are constrained by knowledge of both the tectonic stress field and of the 3-D geometry of the Durance fault system. We simulate dynamic rupture interaction among several fault segmentations of different strikes, dips and rakes, using a 3-D boundary integral equation method. 50 combinations of reasonable stress field orientations, stress field amplitudes and hypocentre locations are tested. The probability of different rupture evolutions is then computed. Each segment ruptures mainly as a single event (44 per cent of the 50 simulations test in this paper). However, the probability that an event triggers simultaneously along three segments is high (26 per cent), leading to a potential rupture length of 45 km. Finally, 2 per cent of the simulations occur along four adjacent segments, producing the greatest total rupture length of 55 km. The simulation results show that the southernmost segment is most easily ruptured (40 per cent), because of its favourable orientation with respect to the tectonic stress and of its favourable location for interaction with the other segments. South-bound unilateral propagation is slightly preferable (41 per cent), compared to north-bound unilateral and bilateral propagation modes. Although, these rupture scenarios cannot be directly translated into probabilities of occurrence, they do provide a better insight as to which rupture scenarios are more likely, an important element to better estimate near-field strong ground motion and seismic hazard.  相似文献

The controls on an earthquake's size are examined in a heterogeneous cellular automaton that includes stress concentrations which scale with rupture size. Large events only occur when stress is highly correlated with strength over the entire fault. Although the largest events occur when this correlation is the highest, the magnitude of the correlation has no predictive value as events of all magnitudes occur during times of high stress/strength correlation. Rather, the size of any particular event depends on the local stress heterogeneity encountered by the growing rupture. Patterns of energy release with time for individual ruptures reflect this heterogeneity and many show nucleation-type behaviour, although there is no relation between the duration of nucleation phase and the size of the event. These results support the view that earthquake size is determined by complex interactions between previous event history and dynamic stress concentrations and suggest that deterministic earthquake prediction based on monitoring nucleation zones will not be possible.  相似文献

Three‐dimensional (3D) numerical modelling of fault displacement enables the building of geological models to represent the complex 3D geometry and geological properties of faulted sedimentary basins. Using these models, cross‐fault juxtaposition relationships are predicted in 3D space and through time, based on the geometries of strata that are cut by faults. Forward modelling of fault development allows a 3D prediction of fault‐zone argillaceous smear using a 3D application of the Shale Gouge Ratio. Numerical models of the Artemis Field, Southern North Sea, UK and the Moab Fault, Utah, USA are used to demonstrate the developed techniques and compare them to traditional one‐ and two‐dimensional solutions. These examples demonstrate that a 3D analysis leads to significant improvements in the prediction of fault seal, the analysis of the interaction of the sealing properties of multiple faults, and the interpretation of fault seal within the context of sedimentary basin geometry.  相似文献

Summary. We propose a simplified method for the calculation of near field accelerograms. It is based upon the hypothesis that, in the course of dynamic faulting, the dominating part of the seismic radiation is emitted by the rupture front. As the rupture moves smoothly it radiates continuously, generating the low-frequency part of the field. High-frequency waves are produced by jumps in the rupture velocity and abrupt changes in the stress intensity factor. The wave-front discontinuities created in this fashion are evaluated by asymptotic methods and may be propagated away from the source by ray theoretical methods. We apply our technique to the evaluation of asymptotic near field accelerograms for a circular fault buried in a half-space. The agreement with numerical accelerograms calculated by full-wave theory is very satisfactory. Two problems are given particular emphasis: (1) the phase shifts introduced by focusing and (2) a simpler method, based on dislocation theory, is proposed for the calculation of the radiation coefficients from a discontinuously moving rupture front.  相似文献

All conventional stress inversion methods, when applied to earthquake focal mechanism data, suffer from uncertainty as to which plane is the true fault plane. This paper deals with several problems in stress inversion brought about by this uncertainty. Our analysis shows that the direction of shear stress on the auxiliary plane does not coincide with the hypothetical slip direction unless the B -axis is parallel to one of the three principal stress directions. Based on this simple fact, we propose a new algorithm dealing with the ambiguity in fault/auxiliary plane identification. We also propose a method to handle the inhomogeneity problem of data quality, which is common and unique for focal mechanism data. Different inversion methods and algorithms are applied to two sets of 'focal mechanism' data simulated from field fault-slip measurement data. The inversion results show that, among the four stress parameters inverted, the stress ratio suffers the most from the ambiguity in fault/auxiliary plane identity, whereas the solutions for the principal stress directions are surprisingly good. The errors in inversion solutions resulting from the fault/auxiliary plane ambiguity can be significantly reduced by controlling subjectively the sample variance of the measurement errors. Our results also suggest that the fault plane cannot be distinguished correctly from the auxiliary plane with a high probability on the basis of the stress inversion alone.  相似文献

Following the 1996 February 18 M L = 5.2 earthquake in the Agly massif in the eastern French Pyrenees, we installed a temporary network of seismometers around the epicentre. In this paper, we analyse 336 well-located aftershocks recorded from February 19 to February 23 by 18 temporary stations and two permanent stations located less than 35  km from the epicentre. Most aftershocks have been located with an accuracy better than 1.5  km in both horizontal and vertical positions. Their spatial distribution suggests the reactivation of a known fault system. We determined 39 fault-plane solutions using P -wave first motions. Despite their diversity, the focal mechanisms yield an E–W subhorizontal T-axis. We also determined fault-plane solutions and principal stress axes using the method developed by Rivera & Cisternas (1990 ) for the 15 best-recorded events. We obtain a pure-shear-rupture tectonic regime under N–S subhorizontal compression and E–W subhorizontal extension. These principal stress axes, which explain the focal mechanisms for at least 75 per cent of the 39 aftershocks, are different from the axes deduced from the main shock. The post-earthquake stress field caused by the main-shock rupture, modelled as sinistral strike slip on three vertical fault segments, is computed for various orientations and magnitudes of the regional stress field, assumed to be horizontal. The aftershock distribution is best explained for a compressive stress field oriented N30°E. Most aftershocks concentrate where the Coulomb failure stress change increases by more than 0.2  MPa. The diversity of aftershock focal mechanisms, poorly explained by this model, may reflect the great diversity in the orientations of pre-existing fractures in the Agly massif.  相似文献

Simulation of seismicity due to fluid migration in a fault zone   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Spatio-temporal variation of rupture activity is modelled assuming fluid migration in a narrow, porous fault zone formed along a vertical strike-slip fault in a semi-infinite elastic medium. The principle of the effective stress coupled to the Coulomb failure criterion introduces mechanical coupling between fault slip and the pore fluid. The fluid is assumed to flow out of a localized high-pressure fluid compartment in the fault at the onset of earthquake rupture. The duration of the earthquake sequence is assumed to be much shorter than the recurrence period of characteristic events on the fault. Both an earthquake swarm and a foreshock–main-shock sequence can be simulated by changing the relative magnitudes of the initial tectonic stress, pore fluid pressure, fracture strength and so on. When an inhomogeneity is introduced into the spatial distribution of fracture strength, high complexity is observed in the spatio-temporal variation of rupture activity. For example, the time interval between two successive events is highly irregular, and a relatively long quiescence of activity is sometimes observed in a foreshock–main-shock sequence. The quiescence is caused by the temporary arresting of rupture extension, due to an encounter with fault segments having locally high strengths. The frequency–magnitude statistics of intermediate-size events obey the Gutenberg–Richter relation. The calculations show the temporal variation of the b value during some foreshock sequences, and the degree of the change seems to depend on the statistical distribution of the fracture strength.  相似文献

Summary. Dynamical rupture process on the fault is investigated in a quasi-three-dimensional faulting model with non-uniform distributions of static frictions or the fracture strength under a finite shearing pre-stress. The displacement and stress time functions on the fault are obtained by solving numerically the equations of motion with a finite stress—fracture criterion, using the finite difference method.
If static frictions are homogeneous or weakly non-uniform, the rupture propagates nearly elliptically with a velocity close to that of P waves along the direction of pre-stress and with a nearly S wave velocity in the direction perpendicular to it. The rise time of the source function and the final displacements are larger around the centre of the fault. In the case when the static frictions are heavily non-uniform and depend on the location, the rupture propagation becomes quite irregular with appreciably decreased velocities, indicating remarkable stick-slip phenomena. In some cases, there remain unruptured regions where fault slip does not take place, and high stresses remain concentrated up to the final stage. These regions could be the source of aftershocks at a next stage.
The stick—slip faulting and irregular rupture propagation radiate high-frequency seismic waves, and the near-field spectral amplitudes tend to show an inversely linear frequency dependence over high frequencies for heavily non-uniform frictional faults.  相似文献

We derive a set of non-hypersingular boundary integral equations, both elastodynamic and elastostatic, for the analysis of arbitrarily shaped 2-D anti-plane and in-plane cracks located in an infinite homogeneous isotropic medium, rendered in a unified nomenclature for all cases. The hypersingularities that appear in the usual formulations for the dynamic cases, existent both at the source point and at the wavefront, are removed by way of a regularization technique based on integration by parts. The equations for the in-plane cases are presented in terms of a local Cartesian coordinate system, one of the axes of which is always held locally tangential to the crack trace. The expressions for the elastic field at any point on the model plane are also given.
Our formulations are shown to yield accurate numerical results, as long as appropriate stabilization measures are taken in the numerical scheme. The numerical applicability of our method to non-planar crack problems is illustrated by simulations of dynamic growth of a hackly crack which has small off-plane side-branches. The results imply that the branching of a crack brings about a significant decrease in the crack-tip stress concentration level and consequently may play an essential role in the arrest of earthquake rupturing.  相似文献

A complete set of expressions is presented for the computation of elastic dynamic stress in plane-layered media. We use a discrete-wavenumber reflectivity method to compute the stress field radiated by arbitrary moment-tensor sources. The expressions derived here represent an interesting tool for both-the observational and theoretical analysis of dynamic stress changes associated with earthquake phenomena. Dynamic stress changes associated with a strike-slip fault having unilateral rupture are shown. This modelling, which is similar to the 1992 Landers California earthquake, illustrates the effects of distance, directivity and depth on transient stress changes.  相似文献

Reservoir compartments, typical targets for infill well locations, are commonly created by faults that may reduce permeability. A narrow fault may consist of a complex assemblage of deformation elements that result in spatially variable and anisotropic permeabilities. We report on the permeability structure of a km-scale fault sampled through drilling a faulted siliciclastic aquifer in central Texas. Probe and whole-core permeabilities, serial CAT scans, and textural and structural data from the selected core samples are used to understand permeability structure of fault zones and develop predictive models of fault zone permeability. Using numerical flow simulation, it is possible to predict permeability anisotropy associated with faults and evaluate the effect of individual deformation elements in the overall permeability tensor. We found relationships between the permeability of the host rock and those of the highly deformed (HD) fault-elements according to the fault throw. The lateral continuity and predictable permeability of the HD fault elements enhance capability for estimating the effects of subseismic faulting on fluid flow in low-shale reservoirs.  相似文献

We perform analytical and numerical studies of scaling relations of earthquakes and partition of elastic strain energy between seismic and aseismic components using a thermodynamically based continuum damage model. Brittle instabilities occur in the model at critical damage level associated with loss of convexity of the strain energy function. A new procedure is developed for calculating stress drop and plastic strain in regions sustaining brittle instabilities. The formulation connects the damage rheology parameters with dynamic friction of simpler frameworks, and the plastic strain accumulation is governed by a procedure that is equivalent to Drucker–Prager plasticity. The numerical simulations use variable boundary forces proportional to the slip-deficit between the assumed far field plate motion and displacement of the boundary nodes. These boundary conditions account for the evolution of elastic properties and plastic strain in the model region. 3-D simulations of earthquakes in a model with a large strike-slip fault produce scaling relations between the scalar seismic potency, rupture area, and stress drop values that are in good agreement with observations and other theoretical studies. The area and potency of the simulated earthquakes generally follow a linear log–log relation with a slope of 2/3, and are associated with stress drop values between 1 and 10 MPa. A parameter-space study shows that the area-potency scaling is shifted to higher stress drops in simulations with parameters corresponding to lower dynamic friction, more efficient healing, and higher degree of seismic coupling.  相似文献

Summary. A tripartite ocean-bottom seismograph array at the junction of the East Pacific Rise and Rivera Fracture Zone recorded an eathquake sequence, consisting of three main shocks ( m B= 4.3, 4.3 and 4.8) and numerous aftershocks from the fracture zone, in the distance range 35–50 km. Delineation of the rupture zones by aftershocks indicates that the first two main shocks took place on overlapping fault areas, while the third occurred over a fault area separated from the first by several kilometres. Both rupture zones were about 4 km long. Surface wave spectra indicate a shallow (about 3 km below the sea floor) source, as does OBS array phase velocity data. The seismic moments, obtained from teleseismic surface wave data, of 1.3, 2.1 and 2.8 × 1023 dyn cm, with the fault areas as delineated by aftershocks, imply a stress drop of about 8 bars for the main shocks. Aftershock sequences of each of the main shocks are similar, with a b -value of about 0.65. Teleseismic P travel times are similar to those from near-surface sources in Nevada.  相似文献

A crack model in antiplane shear configuration is shown representing creep processes interpreted in terms of 'viscous' deformation of a narrow plastic layer, characterized by inhomogeneous rheological properties, embedded within a homogeneous elastic medium. The evolution in time of slip and stress over the crack plane is studied through a truncated expansion in Chebyshev polynomials, and convergence is proved to be fast in the simple examples considered. Finite-stress solutions are found which are compatible with constitutive relations of elasto-plastic materials and furthermore these allow us to simulate creep propagation and stress transfer between locked and unlocked fault segments. This model provides a simple interpretation of the shallow depth of the seismogenic layer observed in several areas of the world and lends itself to modelling creep processes during either post-seismic rebound or pre-seismic stress buildup. Stress transfer is accomplished mostly by the slow extension of the creeping section. During a seismic cycle it is envisaged that different regimes dominate over deep, intermediate and shallow sections of faults: (i) slow pre-seismic stress build-up accompanied by creep and stress migration toward intermediate depths; (ii) brittle fracture over shallow and intermediate sections of faults; (iii) post-seismic rebound over intermediate and deep sections of faults. The present crack model, while providing finite-stress solutions, allows a better understanding of how stress may accommodate at different depths over a fault plane during a seismic cycle.  相似文献

In a tectonically active setting large earthquakes are always threats; however, they may also be useful in elucidating the subsurface geology. Instrumentally recorded seismicity is, therefore, widely utilized to extend our knowledge into the deeper crust, especially where basement is involved. It is because the earthquakes are triggered by underground stress changes that usually corresponding to the framework of geological structures. Hidden faults, therefore, can be recognized and their extension as well as orientation can be estimated. Both above are of relevance for assessment on seismic hazard of a region, since the active faults are supposed to be re-activated and cause large earthquakes. In this study, we analysed the 1999 October 22 earthquake sequence that occurred in southwestern Taiwan. Two major seismicity clusters were identified with spatial distribution between depths of 10 and 16 km. One cluster is nearly vertical and striking 032°, corresponding to the strike-slip Meishan fault (MSF) that generated the 1906 surface rupture. Another cluster strikes 190° and dips 64° to the west, which is interpreted as west-vergent reverse fault, in contrast to previous expectation of east vergence. Our analysis of the focal solutions of all the larger earthquakes in the 1999 sequence with the 3-D distribution of all the earthquakes over the period 1990–2004 allows us reinterpret the structural framework and suggest previously unreognized seismogenic sources in this area. We accordingly suggest: (1) multiple detachment faults are present in southwestern Taiwan coastal plain and (2) additional seismogenic sources consist of tear faults and backthrust faults in addition to sources associated with west-vergent fold-and-thrust belt.  相似文献

A large nearly vertical, normal faulting earthquake ( M w = 7.1) took place in 1997 in the Cocos plate, just beneath the ruptured fault zone of the great 1985 Michoacan thrust event ( M w = 8.1). Dynamic rupture and resultant stress change during the 1997 earthquake have been investigated on the basis of near-source strong-motion records together with a 3-D dynamic model.
Dynamically consistent waveform inversion reveals a highly heterogeneous distribution of stress drop, including patch-like asperities and negative stress-drop zones. Zones of high stress drop are mainly confined to the deeper, southeastern section of the vertical fault, where the maximum dynamic stress drop reaches 280 bars (28 MPa). The dynamically generated source time function varies with location on the fault, and yields a short slip duration, which is caused by a short scalelength of stress-drop heterogeneities. The synthetic seismograms calculated from the dynamic model are generally consistent with the strong-motion velocity records in the frequency range lower than 0.5 Hz.
The pattern of stress-drop distribution appears, in some sense, to be consistent with that of coseismic changes in shear stress resulting from the 1985 thrust event. This consistency suggests that the stress transfer from the 1985 event to the subducting plate could be one of the possible mechanisms that increased the chance of the occurrence of the 1997 earthquake.  相似文献

Source history of the 1905 great Mongolian earthquakes (Tsetserleg, Bolnay)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Two great Mongolian earthquakes, Tsetserleg and Bolnay, occurred on 1905 July 9 and 23. We determined the source history of these events using body waveform inversion. The Tsetserleg rupture (azimuth N60°) correspond to a N60° oriented branch of the long EW oriented Bolnay fault.
Historical seismograms recorded by Wiechert instruments are digitized and corrected for the geometrical deformation due to the recording system. We use predictive filters to recover the signals lost at the minute marks.
The total rupture length for the Tsetserleg earthquake may reach up to 190 km, in order to explain the width of the recorded body waves. This implies adding 60 km to the previously mapped fault. The rupture propagation is mainly eastward. It starts at the southwest of the central subsegment, showing a left lateral strike-slip with a reverse component. The total duration of the modelled source function is 65 s. The seismic moment deduced from the inversion is 1021 N m, giving a magnitude   M w = 8  .
The nucleation of the Bolnay earthquake was at the intersection between the main fault (375 km left lateral strike-slip) and the Teregtiin fault (N160°, 80 km long right lateral strike-slip with a vertical component near the main fault). The rupture was bilateral along the main fault: 100 km to the west and 275 km to east. It also propagated 80 km to the southeast along the Teregtiin fault. The source duration was 115 s. The moment magnitude Mw varies between 8.3 and 8.5.
The nucleation and rupture depths remain uncertain. We tested three cases: (1) nucleation and rupture depth limited to the seismogenic zone; (2) nucleation in the seismogenic zone and rupture propagation going to the base of the crust and (3) nucleation within the crust–upper mantle interface and rupture propagation within the upper mantle.  相似文献
