Residues of DDE, DDT and PCBs were determined in four different commercial bony fishes: grey mullet, red mullet, striped mullet and gold bandgoat fish, as well as in shrimps, limpets and sediments obtained from the eastern Mediterranean coast of Turkey. The PCB levels in living organisms and sediments were found to be very low, and in most cases below the detection limits. The DDE and DDT values were relatively high compared to PCBs and there was a linear correlation between the organochlorine residue concentrations and the extractable organic material of the analysed samples.  相似文献

The levels of phthalate ester plasticizers, DDT, DDE and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were determined in the tissues of 18 species of marine organisms from the northwestern Gulf of Mexico. Low levels of the most widely used phthalate, di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, were found in the majority of the samples; no other phthalates were detected. DDT, DDE and PCBs were found in all samples, but at somewhat lower levels than those found in our 1971 survey. A decrease in p,p′-DDT/p,p′-DDE ratios relative to 1971 was also noted.  相似文献

Levels of DDE and PCB residues in Northern Fulmar Fulmarus glacialis, Black-legged Kittiwake Rissa tridactyla and Thick-billed Murre Uria lomvia collected at Prince Leopold Island, Northwest Territories, between 1975 and 1977 are relatively low. Organochlorine levels were highest in all species in 1976, a year when lipid levels in all tissue examined (adult and chick liver, egg) were highest. Annual variation of DDE and PCB may thus be largely due to differences in nutritional and associated environmental conditions. The unusually high PCB/DDE ratio for the kittiwake cannot be explained by low DDE concentrations rather than by high concentrations of PCBs as suggested else-where. Data from Prince Leopold Island birds indicate both that DDE concentrations are low and that PCB concentrations are high. The evidence seems to suggest a differential ability by the kittiwake to metabolize and excrete organochlorines as compared to other seabirds. The data form an important baseline for high arctic colonially-breeding seabirds in Canada against which future organochlorine levels can be compared.  相似文献

We evaluated the alterations of organochlorinated compounds such as polychlorobiphenyls (PCB), dichloro-diphenyl-dichloroethylene (DDE) and dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (DDT) on the thyroid in wild and cultured sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) at environmental concentrations. These compounds influence the endocrine system of many fish species and are qualified as endocrine disruptors. The thyroid seems to be a target organ. Two alteration endpoints: the thyroid histology and the muscular thyroid hormone concentrations, were used simultaneously.High concentrations in PCBs and DDT were detected in muscles, supporting the idea that the Mediterranean fauna could be more polluted than the Atlantic fauna. The high abundance of DDE indicates a progressive degradation of remnant DDT load and the absence of new inputs in this area. Aquaculture sea bass shows a significant higher amount of pollutants on fresh weight basis (especially PCBs) in their muscles compared to the wild sea bass. Those differences may be related mainly to the contaminations of diet.Thyroid parameters vary between wild and aquaculture sea bass, wild sea bass were characterized by higher follicle diameters, epithelial cell heights and muscular T4 concentrations. A significant relationship between persistent organic pollutants (muscular PCBs and DDT concentration) and the different thyroid parameters (diameters of follicles, epithelial cell heights and muscular T4 levels) could be observed, which support the hypothesis that these compounds have an adverse impact on thyroid morphometry and function.  相似文献

Striped mullet (Mullus barbatus), taken from five areas in the Saronikos Gulf (Greece), were examined for length, weight, hexane extract, chlorinated hydrocarbons (PCBs, DDE, DDT, DDD, BHCs, heptachlor epoxide, dieldrin, endrin) and metals (Fe, Zn, Cu, Pb, Mn, Ni, Cd, Cr, Co). The results established that the waste, either liquid or solid, from the Greater Athens metropolitan area had only a slight influence on the concentration of the metals, but a considerable effect on that of the organochlorine residues. Thus, the samples from the most polluted area, in the vicinity of Piraeus harbour, contained on the average 15 times as much PCBs and DDTs as those from the cleanest area, while the metals levels were raised by just 50%.  相似文献

PCBs, Σ DDT (sum of DDT, DDE and DDD) and other chlorinated hydrocarbons were measured in striped mullet (Mullus barbatus) from Saronikos Gulf. The highest values of PCBs and Σ DDT observed were 1100 and 390 ng g?1 (on a fresh weight basis) respectively. The correlation between the above two residues and the distance from the source of pollution, a well as the relationships between Σ DDT and its metabolites were studied.  相似文献

Polychlorobiphenyls (PCB) and organochlorine (OC) pesticides are endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). The Italian Ministry of Environment has undertaken a program (1999-2001) to measure levels of contaminants in top marine predators and to develop sensitive biomarkers for the evaluation of toxicological risk in these species. In 1999, 15 swordfishes (Xiphias gladius) taken from the Mediterranean Sea along the Sicilian coast (Strait of Messina, Italy) and in the Atlantic Ocean along the Azores Islands, and analysed for 34 congeners of PCBs and 27 organochlorine (OC) pesticides in gonad, muscle, liver and blubber tissues. In the tissues of Mediterranean swordfishes the sum of the determined PCBs congeners ranged from 4.61 to 4651.17 ng g(-1) on fresh tissue basis. Among organochlorine pesticides DDE, DDT and DDD (TDE) predominated with an overall range of 2.37-4734.56 ng(-1) w.w. In particular p,p'-DDE had concentrations appearing up to 3900 ng(-1), with the highest values found in fatty tissues, such as blubber. In the liver of Azores Island swordfishes lower levels of summation PCBs (8.43-294.17 ng/g w.w.) and summation DDTs (<0.01-217.44 ng/g w.w.) were determined.  相似文献

Persistent organochlorine residues in sediments from the Black Sea   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The extent of contamination of the Black Sea by selected organochlorine compounds has been assessed through the analysis of surficial sediments taken from throughout the region. Concentrations of HCHs at sites influenced by the Danube delta are among the highest recorded on a global basis (up to 40 ng g(-1) dry wt). The ratio between the alpha- and gamma-isomers was relatively low indicating contamination through the use of lindane. Concentrations of DDTs (0.06-72 ng g(-1) dry wt) and PCBs (0.06-72 ng g(-1) dry wt) were not especially high in comparison to levels reported from throughout the world. The DDE/DDT ratio was, however, low indicating fresh inputs and hence current usage of DDT within the Black Sea region.  相似文献

Organic contaminant concentrations in mussels and oysters were compared between archived samples of a Mussel Watch Program of the 1970s and samples collected more recently by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Admnistration's National Status and Trends Program. Archived samples were analysed using current analytical techniques. Chlorinated pesticides and PAHs (polyaromatic hydrocarbons) displayed significant decreases between the 1970s and the 1990s. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and butyltins were found in higher concentrations in 1986 than in the 1970s samples. Concentrations for both have decreased since 1986. The original 1970s analytical results were also compared with current analytical results from archived samples. Results were comparable for DDE and were generally comparable for the greater than three-ring PAHs. Results were also comparable for PCBs, even though the early methods quantified Arochlor 1254 and the more recent method quantifies PCBs by congener.  相似文献

This study reports the levels of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs, α‐, β‐, γ‐ and Δ‐HCHs, p,p′‐DDE, p,p′‐DDD and p,p′‐DDT), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs, PCB 28, 52, 101, 153, 138 and 180 congeners) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs, PBDE 47, 99, 100, 153 and 154 congeners) in 45 individual human milk samples collected from Konya City, Turkey. Average concentrations of ΣHCHs, ΣDDTs, ΣPCBs and ΣPBDEs were 22.62, 37.10, 104.95 and 67.34 ng/g lipid wt., respectively. No significant differences in investigated pollutants were found between primiparous and multiparous mothers. There was no correlation between levels of each group of pollutants in human milk and the age of mothers. Moreover, there was no significant difference in the levels of ΣDDTs, between mothers who have eaten fish more than once a week and those who consumed fish less than once. An analysis of the infant exposure to DDTs, HCHs and PCBs via mother's milk indicated that the estimated daily intakes of these pollutants were below the guideline proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Health Canada which means that there is definitely no concern on children health.  相似文献

Organochlorine contaminants including 12 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners and 18 insecticides were determined in water, pore water and sediments of the Jiulong River Estuary and Western Xiamen Sea, China. The results showed that the levels of the total PCBs ranged from non-detectable to 1500 ng l−1 in water, from 209 to 3870 ng l−1 in pore water, and from 2.78 to 14.8 ng g−1 dry weight in sediments. Total organochlorine insecticide concentrations were from below the limit of detection to 2480 ng l−1 in water, from 267 to 33400 ng l−1 in pore water, and from 4.22 to 46.3 ng g−1 dry weight in sediments. Concentrations of PCBs and insecticides in pore water were significantly higher than those in surface water, due to the high affinity of these hydrophobic compounds for sediment phase. The PCB congeners with the highest concentrations were CB153, CB180 and CB194, which together accounted for 68–87% of total PCBs in water, pore water and sediment. Among the hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) compounds, beta-HCH was found to be a major isomer. Analysis of 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis-chlorophenyl-ethane (DDT) and its metabolites showed that 1,1-dichloro-2[o-chlorophenyl]-2[p-chlorophenyl]-ethylene (DDE) was dominant in the group. In comparison to a 1998 study in the Western Xiamen Sea, levels of organochlorines were enhanced due probably to recent inputs and changes in sediments.  相似文献

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine (OC) pesticide levels were determined in blubber samples collected from stranded and incidentally by-caught Hector’s (Cephalorhynchus hectori hectori) and Maui’s (Cephalorhynchus hectori maui) dolphins from New Zealand waters between 1997 and 2009. PCBs (45 congeners) and a range of OC pesticides including dieldrin, hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), along with its metabolites DDE and DDD were determined. OC pesticides dieldrin, p,p′-DDE, p,p′-DDD and p,p′-DDT were present at the highest concentrations. Sum DDT concentrations ranged from 93.7 to 8210 (Mean = 1358, S.D = 1974) and 252.4 to 57,390 (Mean = 12,389, S.D = 18,161) μg/kg wet weight in females and males, respectively. Similarly, Σ45CB concentrations ranged from 45.5 to 981.3 (Mean = 333.2, S.D = 265.8) and 60.5 to 5574 (Mean = 1833, S.D = 1659) μg/kg wet weight in females and males, respectively. The transfer of ΣDDTs and summed PCBs (both as ΣICES7CBs and Σ45CBs) between a pregnant female and her unborn fetus was calculated at 5.7% and 4.3%, respectively. As the fetus was close to term, this likely represents the degree of placental transfer. Concentrations of OC pesticides determined in the present study are higher than those previously reported for Hector’s dolphins. Sum DDT and DDE/ΣDDT levels calculated reveal New Zealand’s legacy of DDT usage, particularly off the east coast of the South Island.  相似文献

A mussel and seawater monitoring survey was conducted at six sampling points between Yalikoy (Ordu) and Sinop in 1999-2000 along the Mid-Black Sea Coast of Turkey in order to assess concentrations of organochlorine pesticides (OCs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Chlorinated pesticides and PCBs were measured in the mussel Mytilus Galloprovincialis and in seawater. In the mussel samples, the most common pollutants in terms of average concentration per g of wet weight (ww), were DDT (max. 1800 pg/gww, min. 240 pg/gww) and its metabolites DDD (max. 5400 pg/gww, min. 240 pg/gww) and DDE (max. 2800 pg/gww, min. 70 pg/gww). Also, dieldrin, heptachlor and HCB were notable contaminants in the mussel samples. PCBs were determined in none of the biota or seawater samples. The concentrations of the OCs and PCBs in mussels were higher in coastal areas receiving river discharges and close to the largest city of the region, Samsun (especially in sampling points in the harbour area). The well-known long persistence of DDTs and other chlorinated compounds was confirmed by residues of these pollutants measured in mussels. On the other hand, even though the usage of such kind of persistent compounds in Turkey was banned, there may still be illegal usage and it is not certain whether the application of these compounds did end in the region.  相似文献

Total DDT burden and DDE percentage (DDE/DDT+TDE+DDE) in the blubber of fin and sei whales are highly correlated. Total DDT concentration may be an important source of variation for the DDE percentage detected in different individuals of the same population. Such a positive correlation is explained by the intensification of the dehydrochlorinative and differential excretive functions at higher pollutant levels. In the past, variations in the DDE percentage have been attributed to differences in the chronology of DDT input into the ecosystem and assumed to be indicators of population discreteness or changes in the pattern of DDT exposure of a given population. However, changes in the DDE percentage as related to total DDT burden may be important within the observed normal ranges of variation of total DDT residue levels caused by age and sex composition of the population. Therefore, the DDE percentage may be reliably used only when full control of the life history parameters of the sample is achieved and when strict homogeneity among the samples to be compared has been proved.  相似文献

Organochlorines in Hong Kong Fish   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Muscle samples from 15 species of fish (n=1) purchased from markets in Hong Kong and 10 liver samples of tilapia (Tilapia mossambica) collected from the Shing Mun River were analysed for organochlorines (polychlorinated biphenyls, ΣDDTs, hexachlorobenzene, hexachlorocyclohexanes, chlordanes, mirex and dieldrin). Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were detected in 15 market fish samples but the levels were very low (around 1 ng g−1). PCB levels in tilapia livers collected from Tai Wai (29.3–65.1 ng g−1) were higher than those from Fo Tan (3.5–23.2 ng g−1) suggesting that there may be some local point soucres. ΣDDTs were detected in all samples, ranging from 3.3 to 75.6 ng g−1 in the market fish and from 7.1 to 88.8 ng g−1 in tilapia. The DDE/DDT ratios in the market fish (0.12–0.75) showed higher variability than those of tilapia (0.30–0.46), suggesting that some of the market fish may have been collected from areas where DDT was recently used. Results of this preliminary study show that organochlorine levels in Hong Kong market fish are low and do not cause any concern for human consumption. An on-going monitoring program, however, is recommended.  相似文献

The National Status & Trends (NS&T, 1986–1993) and the International Mussel Watch (IMW, 1991–1992) programmes provide a good coverage of a broad range of environmental conditions along the North, Central and South American coasts. Total concentrations of DDTs, chlordane-related compounds, PCBs and PAHs present fairly homogeneous distributions along the northern Gulf of Mexico coast, with very few sites showing extremely high or low concentrations. In contrast, a larger variability in the geographical distribution of some of these organic contaminants was observed for IMW sites. For example, high concentrations of DDT and its metabolites, DDD and DDE, were generally found in tropical and subtropical areas as compared to more temperate zones of South America. ‘Industrial’ contaminants, such as PCBs and PAHs, have similar distributions with the highest concentrations encountered generally along the southern South Atlantic coast. An overall comparison of the concentrations of these organic contaminants measured at NS&T and IMW sites indicates that contamination is significantly higher along the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico.  相似文献

Trace metals, metalloids and pesticide content were quantified in intertidal burrowing crabs Australoplax tridentata and a portunid Scylla serrata sampled from estuaries on the east coast of Australia between Cairns and Brisbane. Residues of dieldrin occurred at all locations, heptachlor epoxide and DDT (principally metabolites DDD and DDE) at most, reflecting historical use. Chlordane, chlorpyrifos and endosulfan were only detected in crabs in the urban Brisbane area, and neither hexachlorobenzene (HCB) or polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were quantifiable. Calculations of ambient exposures to organochlorines based on residues in crab tissues indicated that dieldrin exceeded national water quality guidelines for protection of aquatic ecosystems at all sampling locations, but exposure to DDT and its metabolites was below the threshold of concern. Concentrations of trace metals and metalloids generally reflected sediment data and likely sources.  相似文献

Samples of polyethylene pellets were collected at 30 beaches from 17 countries and analyzed for organochlorine compounds. PCB concentrations in the pellets were highest on US coasts, followed by western Europe and Japan, and were lower in tropical Asia, southern Africa and Australia. This spatial pattern reflected regional differences in the usage of PCBs and was positively correlated with data from Mussel Watch, another monitoring approach. DDTs showed high concentrations on the US west coast and in Vietnam. In Vietnam, DDT was predominant over its metabolites (DDE and DDD), suggesting the principal source may be current usage of the pesticide for malaria control. High concentrations of pesticide HCHs were detected in the pellets from southern Africa, suggesting current usage of the pesticides in southern Africa. This study demonstrates the utility and feasibility of the International Pellet Watch approach to monitor POPs at a global scale.  相似文献

The paper presents the results of monitoring trace organic contaminants (17 PCBs and 7 OCPs) and 6 trace metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb and Zn) in the coastal waters of the eastern Adriatic in 2006 using Mytilus galloprovincialis as indicator species. OCPs were found in all samples (0.07-14.3 ng g−1 d.wt.), while in positive samples concentrations of PCBs ranged between 0.16 and 20.5 ng g−1 d.wt. The α-HCH/γ-HCH and DDE/DDT ratios indicated recent input of γ-HCH and DDT. Spatial distributions of HCB, PCBs, DDTs and Hg were significantly correlated with population density. Although elevated concentrations of all trace metals and organic contaminants were recorded in the densely populated and industrialized areas, overall data point to relatively low level of contamination of the eastern Adriatic coast. Evaluation of the risks to human health associated with consumption of the mussels suggested that there is no health risk for moderate shellfish consumers.  相似文献
