Estimates of the geostrophic drag coefficient and the Rossby similarity functions, A and B obtained from data collected by an instrumented aircraft over the sea are presented. The average value of the geostrophic drag coefficient is 0.027 and is independent of the geostrophic windspeed. The dependence of the similarity functions A and B on boundary-layer parameters is investigated. The function A is found to depend on baroclinicity parameters, while B depends on the parameter u */fh (where u * is the surface friction velocity, f is the Coriolis parameter, and h is the boundary-layer depth). Using the geostrophic drag coefficient found here and the results of surface drag coefficient studies, a relationship between geostrophic windspeed and surface windspeed is obtained which shows good agreement with empirical data.  相似文献

High frequency measurements of wind velocity and temperature were made during the Ocean Storms Project in November 1987. The dissipation method was applied to the resulting time series in order to determine friction velocities,u *, and the characteristic temperature scale,t *, at 1-min intervals. These values were then compared to the 1-min mean wind speed and air-sea temperature differences to determine relationships for the drag coefficient (C d ) and Stanton number (C h ). The drag coefficient was comparable to other values reported in the literature, although the variation with wind speed was greater than reported by other investigators. An examination of the residual time series indicated a systematic low frequency periodicity of about 2-hr duration which was attributed to a fluctuating wind interacting with the surface gravity wave field. The temperature fluctuations did not produce meaningful estimates ofC h for stable conditions. For unstable conditions, a value of 1.09±0.02×10–3 was found.  相似文献

Sodar observations from three nights of the HAPEX-MOBILHY experiment have been used to compute covariances between single measurements of the three velocity components. From these, estimates of a low frequency friction velocityu * are derived which show better correlation with observed values of the stable boundary layer (SBL) height,h, than directu *-measurements by an ultrasonic anemometer. On the contrary, interdiurnal variability ofh is better correlated with directu *-measurements. These findings should be mainly due to the problem of different spectral and spatial representativity of the twou *-values.  相似文献

This study investigates the impact of soil moisture availability on dispersion-related characteristics: surface fric-tion velocity (u*), characteristic scales of temperature and humidity (T* and q*), the planetary boundary layer height (h) and atmospheric stability classified by Monin-Obukhov length (L), Kazanski-Monin parameter (μ) and convective velocity scale (w*) during daytime convective condition using a one-dimensional primitive equation with a refined soil model.  相似文献

Observations were made of turbulence in an extensive deciduous forest on level terrain using a vertical array of seven three-dimensional sonic anemometer/thermometers within and above the canopy. Data were collected through the period of leaf fall and over a range of thermal stabilities. A bulk canopy drag coefficient was nearly independent of the density of the forest but decreased greatly with the onset of nocturnal stability. The depth of penetration of momentum into the forest increased with leaf fall but, again, was greatly curtailed by stable conditions. Turbulent velocities decreased with increasing depth in the forest but relative turbulence intensities increased to mid-canopy levels. Leaf density influenced turbulence levels but not as strongly as did thermal stability. Thermal effects were adequately described by the single parameter h/L, where h is the canopy height and L is the Monin-Obukhov length. The longitudinal and vertical velocity correlation coefficient was larger in magnitude than expected in the upper layers of the forest but decreased to a small value in the lowest layers where the Reynolds stress was small. The ratio w /u *, where u * is the local friction velocity, reflected changes in the uw correlation, becoming smaller than usual in the upper canopy layers. It is believed that these effects result from the intermittent, spatially coherent structures that are responsible for a large fraction of the momentum flux to the forest.  相似文献

Calculations are made of the effects of thermal stability under a range of conditions, over the sea and land, on the physical factors (including the critical wind speed) affecting dust-storm generation, snow drift, and rough sea conditions. The computational procedure involves the surface friction velocity, u *, and its relation with the aerodynamic roughness over aerodynamically rough, mobile surfaces. The results indicated that even at relatively high wind speeds, thermal effects under extreme advection situations may be significant, particularly for those properties of the agitated surface dependent on u * 3 and u * 4.  相似文献

The standard deviation of vertical two-point longitudinal velocity fluctuation differences is analyzed experimentally with eleven sets of turbulence measurements obtained at the NASA 150-m ground-winds tower site at Cape Kennedy, Florida. It is concluded that /u *0 is proportional to (fz/u *0)0.22, where the coefficient of proportionality is a function of fz/u *0 and u *0/fL 0. The quantities f and L0 denote the Coriolis parameter and the surface Monin-Obukhov stability length, respectively; u *0 is the surface friction velocity; z is the vertical distance between the two points over which the velocity difference is calculated; and zz is the mean height of the mid-point of the interval z above natural grade. The results of the analysis are valid for 20<-u *0/fL 0<2000.  相似文献

The paper presents a simple method to compute the stability parameter Z/L and boundary-layer parameters such as friction velocity U * and surface heat flux Q 0 on an operational basis. The method is based on the autocorrelation function of the vertical velocity which is relatively insensitive to averaging times except for very large lag times. Eddy correlation techniques on the other hand are very sensitive to averaging times.  相似文献

Scaling velocities relevant for turbulent flows in the planetary boundary layer are discussed. It is suggested that the scaling parameters should be determined by integrated bulk properties of the respective turbulent production terms. According to this concept, a new velocity scale, replacing the friction velocityu*, is proposed depending on bothu* and the geostrophic windu g . The convective velocity scalew* can be determined by the integral of the buoyancy production term and is therefore an appropriate velocity scale. Examination of Minnesota and Kansas data shows that these data do not give the possibility of verifying whether the new scaling velocity is more appropriate thanu*. This is because the range of variability of atmospheric stability during the field measurements is too small. However, theoretical considerations based on integrated properties of the turbulence, through the depth of the planetary boundary layer, are given in support of the new scaling velocity.  相似文献

The effect of topographical slope angle and atmospheric stratification on turbulence intensities in the unstably stratified surface layer have been parameterized using observations obtained from a three-dimensional sonic anemometer installed at 8 m height above the ground at the Seoul National University (SNU) campus site in Korea for the years 1999–2001. Winds obtained from the sonic anemometer are analyzed according to the mean wind direction, since the topographical slope angle changes significantly along the azimuthal direction. The effects of the topographical slope angle and atmospheric stratification on surface-layer turbulence intensity are examined with these data. It is found that both the friction velocity and the variance for each component of wind normalized by the mean wind speed decrease with increase of the topographical slope angle, having a maximum decreasing rate at very unstable stratification. The decreasing rate of the normalized friction velocity (u * /U) is found to be much larger than that of the turbulence intensity of each wind component due to the reduction of wind shear with increase in slope angle under unstable stratification. The decreasing rate of the w component of turbulence intensity (σ w /U) is the smallest over the downslope surface whereas that of the u component (σ u /U) has a minimum over the upslope surface. Consequently, σ w /u * has a maximum increasing rate with increase in slope angle for the downslope wind, whereas σ u /u * has its maximum for the upslope wind. The sloping terrain is found to reduce both the friction velocity and turbulence intensity compared with those on a flat surface. However, the reduction of the friction velocity over the sloping terrain is larger than that of the turbulence intensity, thereby enhancing the turbulence intensity normalized by the friction velocity over sloping terrain compared with that over a flat surface.  相似文献

Bulk transfer coefficient over a snow surface   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The drag coefficient C D and the bulk transfer coefficient for sensible heat C H over a flat snow surface were determined experimentally. Theoretical considerations reveal that C D depends on the friction velocity u * as well as on the geometrical roughness h of the snow surface. It is found that C D increases with increasing u * and/or h. The dependency of C H on u * and h is so small that it is possible to consider C H as a constant for practical purposes: C H, 1 = 2.0 × 10–3 for a reference height of 1 m. The bulk transfer coefficient for water vapor is estimated at C E, 1 = 2.1 × 10–3 for a reference height of 1 m.  相似文献

The performance of the Scintec displaced-beam small aperture scintillometer (DBSAS) in the stable boundary layer (SBL) is investigated using data gathered during the CASES-99 experiment in Kansas, U.S.A. The DBSAS is superior to the eddy-covariance method in determining vertical fluxes of sensible heat and momentumclose to the ground and/or over short (< 1 min) averaging intervals. Both aspects are of importance in the shallow and non-stationary SBL.The friction velocity, u*, the temperature scale, *, and from these the sensible heat flux, H, were calculated from the indirectly determined dissipation rate, , and the structure parameter of temperature, CT 2, by the DBSAS, which was operated over a path length of 112 m. All these variables are compared with eddy-covariance data for 10-minute time averages. Previously reported systematic errors in the DBSAS, overestimation of u* for low u* values and underestimation of u* for high u* values, have in part been dealt with by adjusting the beam displacement distance from 2.7 mm to 2.6 mm in the calculations. The latter adjustment is presented as a working hypothesis, not a general solution.  相似文献

For 390 ten-minute samples of turbulent flux, made with a trivane above a lake, the vertical alignment is determined within 0.1 ° through azimuth-dependent averaging. One degree of instrumental misalignment is found to produce an average tilt error of 9 ± 4% for momentum flux, and 4 ± 2% for heat flux. The tilt error in the vertical momentum flux depends mainly ons u/u*, and cannot be much diminished with impunity by high-pass pre-filtering of the turbulence signals. The effects of rain on trivane measurements of vertical velocity are shown to be negligible at high wind speeds, and adaptable to correction in any case. The normalized vertical velocity variance,s w/u*, appears to be proportional to the square root ofz/L for unstable stratification. For a wind speed range of 2 to 15 m s–1, the eddy correlation stresses measured at 4- and 8-m heights can be reasonably well estimated by using a constant drag coefficientC d=1.3 X 10-3, while cup anemometer profile measurements give an overestimate of eddy stress at high wind speeds. A good stress estimate is also obtained from the elevation variance; it is suggested that trivane measurement of this variance might be made from a mobile platform, e.g., a moderately stabilized spar buoy.  相似文献

In this paper we study the effect of atmospheric stability on the growth of surface gravity waves. To that end we numerically solved the Taylor-Goldstein equation for wind profiles which deviate from a logarithmic form because stratification affects the turbulent momentum transport. Using Charnock's relation for the roughness height z 0 of the wind profile, it is argued that the growth rate of the wave depends on the dimensionless phase velocity c/u * (where u * is the friction velocity) and a measure of the effect of atmospheric stability, namely the dimensionless Obukhov length gL/u * 2, whereas it only depends weakly on gz t /u * 2 (where z t is the roughness height of the temperature profile). Remarkably for a given value of u * /c, the growth rate is larger for a stable stratification (L > 0) than for an unstable one (L < 0). We explain why this is the case. If, on the other hand, one considers the growth rate as a function of c/U 10 (where U 10 is the windspeed at 10 m), the situation reverses for c/U 10 < 1. For practical application in wave prediction models, we propose a new parameterization of the growth rate of the waves which is an improvement of the Snyder et al. (1981) proposal because the effect of stability is taken into account.

A common parametrization over snow-covered surfaces that are undergoing saltation is that the aerodynamic roughness length for wind speed (z 0) scales as au*2/g{\alpha u_\ast^2/g}, where u * is the friction velocity, g is the acceleration of gravity, and α is an empirical constant. Data analyses seem to support this scaling: many published plots of z 0 measured over snow demonstrate proportionality to u*2{u_\ast^2 }. In fact, I show similar plots here that are based on two large eddy-covariance datasets: one collected over snow-covered Arctic sea ice; another collected over snow-covered Antarctic sea ice. But in these and in most such plots from the literature, the independent variable, u *, was used to compute z 0 in the first place; the plots thus suffer from fictitious correlation that causes z 0 to unavoidably increase with u * without any intervening physics. For these two datasets, when I plot z 0 against u * derived from a bulk flux algorithm—and thus minimize the fictitious correlation—z 0 is independent of u * in the drifting snow region, u * ≥ 0.30 ms−1. I conclude that the relation z0 = au*2/g{z_0 = \alpha u_\ast^2/g} when snow is drifting is a fallacy fostered by analyses that suffer from fictitious correlation.  相似文献

Two levels of triple-hot-film and sonic anemometers were deployed on a 5.5-m towerduring the Cooperative Atmospheric Surface Exchange Study (CASES-99) in October1999. Each triple-hot-film probe was collocated 50 mm from the sonic sensing path ona common boom. Various problems with using triple-hot-films in the atmosphere toresolve wind components are addressed including the derivation of a yaw angle correction using the collocated sensors. It was found that output voltage drift due to changes in environmental temperature could be monitored and corrected using an automated system. Non-unique solutions to heat transfer equations can be resolved using a collocated sonic anemometer. Multi-resolution decomposition of the hot-film data was used to estimate appropriate day and night averaging periods for turbulent flux measurements in and near the roughness sub-layer. Finally, triple-hot-film measurements of mean wind magnitude (M), turbulent kinetic energy (TKE), sensible heat flux (H), and local friction velocity (u*) are compared to those of the collocated CSAT3 sonic anemometers. Overall, the mean wind magnitudes measured by the triple-hot-film and the collocated sonic sensorswere close, consistent and independent of stability or proximity to the ground. The turbulent statistics, TKE, u*, and H, measured by the two sensor systems were reasonably close together at z = 5 m. However, the ratio of sonic measurement/hot-film measurement decreased toward the ground surface, especially during stable conditions.  相似文献

The paper reveals that the variations in parameters like u*, the scaling velocity and θ*. The scaling tempera-ture during the various phases of monsoon might be linked with subsynoptic features. The rise in u* is mainly connected with the presence of lower tropospheric cyclonic vorticity over a subsynoptic scale of the site. However the variations in θ* is mainly linked with the various phases of monsoon and θ* shows a sharp rise in presence of low level convective cloud.Besides the correlation studies of u and u*, θv and θv* , θv-θv0 and θv* are undertaken. The correlation be?tween θv and θv* is poor. In other two cases correlations are good. Besides u/u* , has shown good coefficient of variation values within the ζ range.  相似文献

The friction velocity (u*) and the sensible heat flux density (H) determined with a displaced-beam small aperture scintillometer (DBSAS) and a hot-film eddy correlation system are compared. Random errors in the DBSAS are relatively small, compared to scatter found with two eddy-correlation systems. Assuming that the hot-film system yields the true fluxes, theDBSAS appears to overestimate u* when u* is less than 0.2 m s-1 and to underestimate u* at high wind speeds. This implies that the DBSAS measurements of theinner scale length of turbulence, l0, a direct measure for the dissipation rate of kinetic turbulent energy, are biased. Possible causes for these results are discussedin detail. A correction procedure is presented to account for effects of random noise and of so-called inactive turbulence or sensor vibrations. The errors in u* cause errors in the DBSAS measurements of the structure parameter of temperature CT 2. The derived H appears to be less sensitive to errors in l0 and CT 2, because errors in these quantities tend to cancel out.  相似文献

Data collected in the surface layer in a northern suburban area of Nanjing from 15 November to 29 December 2007 were analyzed to examine the Monin-Obukhov similarity for describing the turbulent fluctu- ations of 3D winds under all stability conditions and to obtain the turbulence characteristics under different weather conditions. The results show that the dimensionless standard deviations of turbulent velocity com- ponents (σ u /u* , σ v /u* , σ w /u * ) and dimensionless turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) can be well described by "1/3" power law relationships under stable, neutral, and unstable conditions, with σ u /u * > σ v /u * > σ w /u* . Land use and land cover changes mainly impact dimensionless standard deviations of horizontal component fluctuations, but they have very little on those of the vertical component. The dimensionless standard devi- ations of wind components and dimensionless TKE are remarkably affected by different weather conditions; the deviations of horizontal wind component and dimensionless TKE present fog day > clear sky > overcast > cloudy; the trend of the vertical wind component is the reverse. The surface drag coefficient at a Nan- jing suburban measurement site during the observation period was obviously higher than at other reported plains and plateau areas, and was approximately one order larger in magnitude than the reported plains areas. Dimensionless standard deviation of temperature declined with increasing |z /L| with an approximate "-1/3" slope in unstable stratification and "-2/3" slope in stable stratification.  相似文献
