LA-ICP-MS(laser ablation-inductively coupled-mass spectrometry)has been recently used for rapid, accurate and precise U-Pb geochronology on zircon grains. In this paper, we adopted an Agilent 7900 quadrupole ICP-MS coupled with a Resolution M50-LR 193nm excimer laser system to establish integrated measurement procedures. Before analysis, the system is tuned to achieve sensitivities better than 30000 cps/s for 238 U with a 40μm spot size, at~3.5J/cm2. Detailed parameters for laser system and ICP-MS are presented here. Then, we analyzed five reference zircons(91500, GJ-1, Plesovice, FCT, Penglai)with a wide range in age from~1064 to~4.4Ma. Two standard zircons, 91500 and GJ-1, are employed as external reference standards. Generally, second zircon standard is analyzed in an effort to ensure accuracy and evaluate reproducibility. A typical analysis sequence includes one international glass standard(NIST610), two external reference standards, five grains of unknown zircon with every eight ablations. Laser induced time-dependent elemental fractionation is corrected using the intercept method, whereas instrument drift, mass bias and elemental fractional caused by ionization differences are corrected by external reference standard 91500 or GJ-1. Compared with 91500 and GJ-1, common Pb content of Plesovice, FCT, Penglai can't be ignored. Thus, we did common Pb correction for the above three standard zircons. The performance of the established procedure was assessed by analyzing zircon range in age from~1 064 to~4Ma. The results show that the ages of these five references are consistent with the ages of published studies with accuracy for three international references(91500, GJ-1, Plesovice)better than 3% and two young secondary references(FCT, Penglai)lower than 7% at the 2 sigma level, which indicates that our analytical procedure is reliable. For individual laser analysis, the uncertainties are mainly from three sources:Measurement error of isotope ratio, error of correction factors for instrument drift and element fractionation, and error of recommended age of external references. Compared to three international references, there are three extra uncertainties for young reference zircons, including:1)little radioactive isotopes closing to blank level increase the measurement error of isotope ratio; 2) effect of common lead becomes more significant;3) the nonhomogeneous samples couldn't match references well. Therefore, accuracy and precision of measurement depend on absolute age, content of common lead and matching degree between references and samples. In summary, the accuracy and precision obtained using the technique presented in this study are similar to those of other LA-ICP-MS laboratories.  相似文献

利用1997年和199年南极中山站多通道扫描光度计的地面观测数据和WIND卫星在弓激波上游对行星际磁场(IMF)的观测数据,对午后高纬极光强度与IMF各分量、以及时钟角之间的相关进行了定量研究. 统计表明,630nm的强度Ir随IMF Bx的增大而减小,其线性相关系数为-0.3;而557.7nm的变化趋势与此相反,其相关系数要低得多. 630nm的强度随IMF By的变化曲线为一"V"形结构,其谷底在By=-3nT附近;557.7nm的强度也有相似的变化趋势,其谷底的位置在By=-2nT附近. 极光强度随IMF Bz的变化曲线为一倒着的"Z"字形结构. 630nm的强度随IMF的模B的增大而增强,其线性相关系数达到0.9,而557.7nm与B之间的相关性要差得多. 极光强度随IMF时钟角的变化曲线为一倒"V"结构,其反转点在θ=130°附近.  相似文献

We propose, as a testable hypothesis, a basin-scale approach for interpreting the abundance of in situ produced cosmogenic isotopes, an approach which considers explicitly both the isotope and sediment flux through a drainage basin. Unlike most existing models, which are appropriate for evaluating in situproduced cosmogenic isotope abundance at discrete points on Earth's surface, our model is designed for interpreting isotope abundance in sediment. Because sediment is a mixture of materials, in favourable cases derived from throughout a drainage basin, we suggest that measured isotope abundances may reflect spatially averaged rates of erosion. We investigate the assumptions and behaviour of our model and conclude that it could provide geomorphologists with a relatively simple means by which to constrain the rate of landscape evolution if a basin is in isotopic steady state and if sampled sediments are well mixed.  相似文献

This paper presents 19 months of stable isotope (δ2H and δ18O) data to enhance understanding of water and solute transport at two spatial scales (2.3 km2 and 122 km2) in the agricultural Lunan catchment, Scotland. Daily precipitation and stream isotope data, weekly lake and spring isotope data and monthly groundwater isotope data revealed important insights into flow pathways and mixing of water at both scales. In particular, a deeper groundwater flow path significantly contributes to total streamflow (25-50%). Upstream lake isotope dynamics, susceptible to evaporative fractionation, also appeared to have an important influence on the downstream isotope composition. This unique tracer data set facilitated the conceptualization of a lumped catchment-scale flow-tracer model. The incorporation of hydrological, mixing and fractionation processes based on these data improved simulations of the stream δ2H isotope response at the catchment outlet from 0.37 to 0.56 for the Nash-Sutcliffe statistic. The stable isotope data successfully aided model conceptualization and calibration in the quest for a simple water and solute transport model with improved representation of process dynamics.  相似文献

High-resolution oxygen isotope records over the last 2249 ka (MIS 1–86) have been obtained from cores of the upper section (105.08 m) at ODP Site 1143 (water depth of 2772 m) drilled in the Nansha area, southern South China Sea. The sampling resolution is at about 2 ka intervals, resulting in one of the best oxygen isotope records over the global ocean. The oxygen isotope curves, displaying details in the Pleistocene glacial cycles, have revealed a nearly 300 ka long stage of transition from a predominant 40 ka to 100 ka periodicity. Therefore, the “Mid-Pleistocene Revolution” should be considered as a process of transition rather than an abrupt change. Within the 100 ka glacial cycles, the changes in tropical sea surface water were found to lead those in high-latitude ice sheet. Our comparisons show that the ice sheet expansion and the glacial stage extension in the Northern Hemisphere with the 100 ka cycles must have been driven not by ice sheet itself, but by processes outside the high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere.  相似文献

The thermodynamic relationship between the oxygen isotope fractionation properties of plagioclase and its composition has been derived by treating plagioclase as a “reciprocal solution” consisting of independent cationic and anionic substitutions, namely (NaAl)5+?(CaSi)5+and18O?16O. The results show that the logarithm of the oxygen isotope fractionation factor, α, between plagioclase and a coexisting phase varies linearly with the anorthite content of plagioclase. The proportionality constant is given by the oxygen isotope fractionation factor between albite and anorthite, and has been derived from the experimental data of two groups of workers, O'Neil and Taylor [2] and Matsuhisa et al. [3], on the isotopic fractionation between each plagioclase end-member and aqueous solutions. It is found that O'Neil and Taylor's data on isotopic exchange of plagioclase end-members with only 2–3 M chloride solution, rather than with both pure water and the chloride solution, lead essentially to zero intercept of the ln α(Ab-An) vs. 1/T2 relation, in accord with Bottinga and Javoy's [10] conclusion about the oxygen isotope fractionation between two anhydrous silicates at T<500°C.  相似文献

Stable isotope variations are extremely useful for flow partitioning within the hydrologic cycle but remain poorly understood throughout the tropics, particularly in watersheds with rapidly infiltrating soils, such as Andisols in Central America. This study examines the fluctuations of stable isotope ratios (δ18O and δ2H) in the hydrologic components of a tropical coffee agroforestry watershed (~1 km2) with Andisol soils in Costa Rica. Samples were collected in precipitation, groundwater, springs, and stream water over 2 years. The local meteoric water line for the study site was δ2H = 8.5 δ18O + 18.02 (r2 = 0.97, n = 198). The isotope ratios in precipitation exhibited an enriched trend during the dry season and a notable depletion at the beginning of the wet season. The δ18O compositions in groundwater (average = ?6.4‰, σ = 0.7) and stream water (average = ?6.7‰, σ = 0.6) were relatively stable over time, and both components exhibited more enriched values in 2013, which was the drier year. No strong correlation was observed between the isotope ratios and the precipitation amount at the event or daily time‐step, but a correlation was observed on a monthly scale. Stream water and base flow hydrograph separations based on isotope end‐member estimations showed that pre‐event water originating from base flow was prevalent. However, isotope data indicate that event water originating from springs appears to have been the primary driver of initial rises in stream flow and peak flows. These results indicate that isotope sampling improves the understanding of water balance components, even in a tropical humid location, where significant variations in rainfall challenge current modelling efforts. Further research using fine‐scale hydrometric and isotopic data would enhance understanding the processes driving spring flow generation in watersheds.  相似文献

Stable isotope values of hydrogen and oxygen from precipitation and ground water samples were compared by using a volumetrically based mixing equation and stable isotope gradient to estimate the season and location of recharge in four basins. Stable isotopes were sampled at 11 precipitation sites of differing elevation during a 2-year period to quantify seasonal stable isotope contributions as a function of elevation. Supplemental stable isotope data collected by the International Atomic Energy Association during a 14-year period were used to reduce annual variability of the mean seasonal stable isotope data. The stable isotope elevation relationships and local precipitation elevation relationships were combined by using a digital elevation model to calculate the total volumetric contribution of water and stable isotope values as a function of elevation within the basins. The results of these precipitation calculations were compared to measured ground water stable isotope values at the major discharge points near the terminus of the basins. Volumetric precipitation contributions to recharge were adjusted to isolate contributing elevations. This procedure provides an improved representation of recharge contributions within the basins over conventional stable isotope methods. Stable isotope values from wells and springs at the terminus of each basin were used to infer the elevations of precipitation important for recharge of the regional ground water flow system. Ancillary climatic, geologic, and stable isotope values were used to further constrain the location where precipitation is entering the ground water flow system.  相似文献

Stable water isotope ratios are measured as a tracer of environmental processes in materials such as leaves, soils, and lakes. Water in these archives may experience evaporation, which increases the abundance of heavy isotopologues proportionally to the gradients in humidity and isotope ratio between the evaporating water and the surrounding atmosphere. The isotope ratio of the atmosphere has been difficult to measure until recently, and measurements remain scarce. As a result, several assumptions have been adopted to estimate isotope ratios of atmospheric water vapour. Perhaps the most commonly employed assumption in terrestrial environments is that water vapour is in isotopic equilibrium with precipitation. We evaluate this assumption using an eight‐member ensemble of general circulation model (GCM) simulations that include explicit calculation of isotope ratios in precipitation and vapour. We find that across the model ensemble, water vapour is typically less depleted in heavy isotopologues than expected if it were in equilibrium with annual precipitation. Atmospheric vapour likely possesses higher‐than‐expected isotope ratios because precipitation isotope ratios are determined by atmospheric conditions that favour condensation, which do not reflect atmospheric mixing and advection processes outside of precipitation events. The effect of this deviation on theoretical estimates of isotope ratios of evaporating waters scales with relative humidity. As a result, the equilibrium assumption gives relatively accurate estimates of the isotope ratios of evaporating waters in low latitudes but performs increasingly poorly at increasing latitudes. Future studies of evaporative water pools should include measurements of atmospheric isotope ratios or constrain potential bias with isotope‐enabled GCM simulations.  相似文献
