An algorithm to calculate direct velocity feedback gain with limited number of sensors is developed in a simple way such that a certain performance index is minimized according to QN control method. If a limited number of velocity outputs can be measured, full velocity responses of the whole structure can be interpolated based on the mode shapes. By defining the performance index function as a combination of the structure's velocity responses and control forces only, feedback gain can be determined according to QN control method with the external excitation being taken into account throughout the entire algorithm. Control forces are then regulated by the time‐invariant feedback gain matrix. The effective location of the active control devices for a building structure subjected to intermediate‐storey excitation has been determined to be in the three floors adjacent to the vibration source. Hence for the purpose of this paper, only the optimal placement of sensors is verified. It is shown in this paper that if the dynamic behaviour of the structure is well described by a mathematical model, sufficient response reduction effect can be achieved according to the new DVFC algorithm, and the degradation of control performance due to time delay can also be verified. In order to investigate ways of reducing vibrations of building structures subjected to excitation acting on intermediate storey, active vibration controls are conducted with active control devices installed on different floors of the structure, and the effective location of control devices is also investigated. In this paper, we propose a new ‘Discrete‐Optimizing Control Method’ for vibration control. The control forces are determined analytically which makes the ‘discrete‐index function’ minimum. Through numerical simulation, the Discrete‐Optimizing Control Method is proved to be an effective control method. The response reduction effects are best when the control devices are concentrated on the adjacent three floors of the vibration source. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This study proposes a new design method for an active mass damper (AMD) that is based on auto‐regressive exogenous models of a building structure. The proposed method uses the results of system identification in the field of active structural control. The uncontrolled structure is identified as auto‐regressive exogenous models via measurements under earthquake excitation and forced vibration. These models are linked with an equation of motion for the AMD to introduce a state equation and output equation for the AMD–structure interaction system in the discrete‐time space; the equations apply modern control theories to the AMD design. In the numerical applications of a 10‐degree‐of‐freedom building structure, linear quadratic regulator control is used to understand the fundamental characteristics of the proposed design procedure. The feedback control law requires the AMD's acceleration, velocity and stroke; the structure's acceleration; and the ground acceleration as vibration measurements. The numerical examples confirm the high applicability and control effectiveness of the proposed method. One remarkable advantage of the proposed method is that an equation of motion for the structure becomes unnecessary for designing controllers. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A new inelastic structural control algorithm is proposed by incorporating the force analogy method (FAM) with the predictive instantaneous optimal control (PIOC) algorithm. While PIOC is very effective in compensating for the time delay for elastic structures, the FAM is highly efficient in performing the inelastic analysis. Unlike conventional inelastic analysis methods of changing stiffness, the FAM analyzes structures by varying the structural displacement field, and therefore the state transition matrix needs to be computed only once. This greatly simplifies the computation and makes inelastic analysis readily applicable to the PIOC algorithm. The proposed algorithm compensates for the time delay that happens in practical control systems by predicting the inelastic structural response over a period that equals the magnitude of the time delay. A one‐story frame with both strain‐hardening and strain‐softening inelastic characteristics is analyzed using this algorithm. Results show that the proposed control algorithm is feasibile for any inelastic structures. While the control efficiency deteriorates with the increase in magnitude of the time delay, the PIOC maintains acceptable performance within a wide range of time delay magnitudes. Finally, a computer model of a six‐story moment‐resisting steel frame is analyzed to show that PIOC has good control results for real inelastic structures. The discrete‐time variable structure control method for seismically excited linear structures with time delay in control is investigated in this paper. The control system with time delay is first discretized and transformed into standard discrete form which contains no time delay in terms of the time delay being integer and non‐integer times of sampling period, respectively. Then the discrete switching surface is determined using ideal quasi‐sliding mode and discrete controller is designed using the discrete approach‐law reaching condition. The deduced controller and switching surface contain not only the current step of state feedback but also linear combination of some former steps of controls. Numerical simulations are illustrated to verify the feasibility and robustness of the proposed control method. Since time‐delay effect is incorporated in the mathematical model for the structural control system throughout the derivation of the proposed algorithm, system performance and dynamic stability are guaranteed. This paper presents an experimental study, while a companion paper addresses an analytical study, to explore the possibility of using a hybrid platform to mitigate vibration of a batch of high‐tech equipment installed in a building subject to nearby traffic‐induced ground motion. A three‐storey building model and a hybrid platform model are designed and manufactured. The hybrid platform is mounted on the building floor through passive mounts composed of leaf springs and oil dampers and controlled actively by an electromagnetic actuator with velocity feedback control strategy. The passive mounts are designed in such a way that the stiffness and damping ratio of the platform can be changed. A series of shaking table tests are then performed on the building model without the platform, with the passive platform of different parameters, and with the hybrid platform. The experimental results demonstrate that the hybrid platform is very effective in reducing the velocity response of a batch of high‐tech equipment in the building subject to nearby traffic‐induced ground motion if dynamic properties of the platform and control feedback gain are selected appropriately. In conventional methods of modal control, the number of controllable structural modes is usually restrained by the number of sensors that feedback the structural signals. In this paper a modal control scheme where the feedback gain is formulated in an augmented state space is proposed. The advantage of the proposed method is that it increases the number of the controllable modes without adding extra sensors. The method is verified experimentally by an earthquake simulation test with a full‐scale building model. The proposed modal control was also compared with the conventional ones in the test. For the building model tested, the performance of the proposed control with only one feedback signal can be as efficient as that of modal control with full state feedback.

Time‐delay is an important issue in structural control. Applications of unsynchronized control forces due to time‐delay may result in a degradation of the control performance and it may even render the controlled structures to be unstable. In this paper, a state‐of‐the‐art review for available methods of time‐delay compensation is presented. Then, five methods for the compensation of fixed time‐delay are presented and investigated for active control of civil engineering structures. These include the recursive response method, state‐augmented compensation method, controllability based stabilization method, the Smith predictor method and the Pade approximation method, all are applicable to any control algorithm to be used for controlled design. Numerical simulations have been conducted for MDOF building models equipped with an active control system to demonstrate the stability and control performance of these time‐delay compensation methods. Finally, the stability and performance of the phase shift method, that is well‐known in civil engineering applications, have also been critically evaluated through numerical simulations. In active control, the control force execution time delay cannot be avoided or eliminated even with present technology, which can be critical to the performance of the control system. This paper investigates the influence of time delay on the stability of an SDOF system with an optimal direct output feedback controlled mass damper. An active mass damper system can take the form of a hybrid mass damper (HMD) or a fully active mass damper (AMD) depending upon imposed design constraints resulting from space, strength and power limitations. Explicit formulas and numerical solutions to determine the maximum delay time which causes onset of system instability are obtained. The control effect of the two‐DOF HMD/AMD benchmark system with and without time delay is illustrated quantitatively in a continuous‐time approach. In order to fit the digital implementation of the computer‐controlled system in practice, the control gains will be compensated by using their discrete‐time version to overcome the degradation of control effect due to time delay. Generally, the active structural control system belongs to the discrete‐time control system, and the sampling period is one of the most important factors that would directly affect the performance of the control system. In this paper, active control approaches by using the discrete‐time variable structure control theory are studied for reducing the dynamic responses of seismically excited building structures. Based on the discrete reaching law method, a feedback controller which includes the sampling period is presented. The controller is extended by introducing the saturated control method to avoid the adverse effect when the actuators are saturated due to unexpected extreme earthquakes. The simulation results are obtained for a single‐degree‐of‐freedom (SDOF) system and a MDOF shear building equipped with active brace system (ABS) under seismic excitations. It is found that the discrete variable structure control approach and its saturated control method presented in this paper are quite effective. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper presents a theoretical study of a predictive active control system used to improve the response of multi‐degree‐of‐freedom (MDOF) structures to earthquakes. As an example a building frame equipped with electrorheological (ER) dampers is considered. The aim of the design is to find a combination of forces that are produced by the ER dampers in order to obtain an optimal structural response. The mechanical response of ER fluid dampers is regulated by an electric field. Linear auto‐regressive model with exogenous input (ARX) is used to predict the displacements and the velocities of the frame in order to overcome the time‐delay problem in the control system. The control forces in the ER devices are calculated at every time step by the optimal control theory (OCT) according to the values of the displacements and of the velocities that are predicted at the next time step at each storey of the structure. A numerical analysis of a seven‐storey ER damped structure is presented as an example. It shows a significant improvement of the structural response when the predictive active control system is applied compared to that of an uncontrolled structure or that of a structure with controlled damping forces with time delay. The structure's displacements and velocities that were used to obtain the optimal control forces were predicted according to an ‘occurring’ earthquake by the ARX model (predictive control). The response was similar to that of the structure with control forces that were calculated from a ‘known’ complete history of the earthquake's displacement and velocity values, and were applied without delay (instantaneous control). We present preconditioned non‐linear conjugate gradient algorithms as alternatives to the Gauss‐Newton method for frequency domain full‐waveform seismic inversion. We designed two preconditioning operators. For the first preconditioner, we introduce the inverse of an approximate sparse Hessian matrix. The approximate Hessian matrix, which is highly sparse, is constructed by judiciously truncating the Gauss‐Newton Hessian matrix based on examining the auto‐correlation and cross‐correlation of the Jacobian matrix. As the second preconditioner, we employ the approximation of the inverse of the Gauss‐Newton Hessian matrix. This preconditioner is constructed by terminating the iteration process of the conjugate gradient least‐squares method, which is used for inverting the Hessian matrix before it converges. In our preconditioned non‐linear conjugate gradient algorithms, the step‐length along the search direction, which is a crucial factor for the convergence, is carefully chosen to maximize the reduction of the cost function after each iteration. The numerical simulation results show that by including a very limited number of non‐zero elements in the approximate Hessian, the first preconditioned non‐linear conjugate gradient algorithm is able to yield comparable inversion results to the Gauss‐Newton method while maintaining the efficiency of the un‐preconditioned non‐linear conjugate gradient method. The only extra cost is the computation of the inverse of the approximate sparse Hessian matrix, which is less expensive than the computation of a forward simulation of one source at one frequency of operation. The second preconditioned non‐linear conjugate gradient algorithm also significantly saves the computational expense in comparison with the Gauss‐Newton method while maintaining the Gauss‐Newton reconstruction quality. However, this second preconditioned non‐linear conjugate gradient algorithm is more expensive than the first one.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a new actuator control algorithm that achieves the design flexibility, robustness, and tracking accuracy to give real‐time hybrid‐simulation users the power to achieve highly accurate and robust actuator control. The robust integrated actuator control (RIAC) strategy integrates three key control components: loop shaping feedback control based on H optimization, a linear‐quadratic‐estimation block for minimizing noise effect, and a feed‐forward block that reduces small residual delay/lag. The combination of these components provides flexible controller design to accommodate setup limits while preserving the stability of the H algorithm. The efficacy of the proposed strategy is demonstrated through two illustrative case studies: one using large capacity but relatively slow actuator of 2500 kN and the second using a small‐scale fast actuator. Actuator tracking results in both cases demonstrate that the RIAC algorithm is effective and applicable for different setups. Real‐time hybrid‐simulation validation is implemented using a three‐DOF building frame equipped with a magneto‐rheological damper on both setups. Results using the two very different physical setups illustrate that RIAC is efficient and accurate. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We present a comparison of methods for the analysis of the numerical substructure in a real‐time hybrid test. A multi‐tasking strategy is described, which satisfies the various control and numerical requirements. Within this strategy a variety of explicit and implicit time‐integration algorithms have been evaluated. Fully implicit schemes can be used in fast hybrid testing via a digital sub‐step feedback technique, but it is shown that this approach requires a large amount of computation at each sub‐step, making real‐time execution difficult for all but the simplest models. In cases where the numerical substructure poses no harsh stability condition, it is shown that the Newmark explicit method offers advantages of speed and accuracy. Where the stability limit of an explicit method cannot be met, one of the several alternatives may be used, such as Chang's modified Newmark scheme or the α‐operator splitting method. Appropriate methods of actuator delay compensation are also discussed. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A predictive instantaneous optimal control (PIOC) algorithm is proposed for controlling the seismic responses of elastic structures. This algorithm compensates for the time delay that happens in practical control applications by predicting the structural response over a period that equals the time delay, and by substituting the predicted response in the instantaneous optimal control (IOC) algorithm. The unique feature of this proposed PIOC algorithm is that it is simple and at the same time compensates for the time delay very effectively. Numerical examples of single degree of freedom structures are presented to compare the performance of PIOC and IOC systems for various time delay magnitudes. Results show that a time delay always causes degradation of control efficiency, but PIOC can greatly reduce this degradation compared to IOC. The effects of the structure's natural periods and the choice of control gains on the degradation induced by the time delay are also analyzed. Results show that shorter natural periods and larger control gains are both more sensitive and more serious to the degradation of control efficiency. Finally, a practical application of PIOC is performed on a six‐story moment‐resisting steel frame. It is demonstrated that PIOC contributes significantly to maintain stability in multiple degree of freedom structures, and at the same time PIOC has a satisfactory control performance. In most of the research work on structural vibration control only two‐dimensional plane structural modelling has been considered, although only a few practical building structures can be modelled as planar structures. Therefore, these methods are not directly applicable to the majority of the practical building structures. This paper discusses the design of a multiobjective optimal fuzzy logic controller (FLC) driven hybrid mass damper (HMD) system for seismically excited torsionally coupled building structures. Floor acceleration and velocity information have been used as feedback to the fuzzy logic controller. A three branch tournament Genetic Algorithm has been used for the multiobjective optimal design of the FLC driven HMD system, where the minimization of the non‐dimensionalized peak displacement, acceleration and rotation of the structure about its vertical axis, have been as the three objective functions. The proposed multiobjective optimal fuzzy logic controller has been verified for an example problem reported in the literature. This HMD system consists of four HMDs arranged in such a way that the system can control the torsional mode of vibration effectively in addition to the flexure modes of vibration. In this work, we present a new method in designing static output‐feedback H controllers suitable for vibrational control of buildings under seismic excitation. The method produces a Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) formulation that allows obtaining static output‐feedback controllers with different information structure constraints by imposing a convenient zero–nonzero structure on the LMI variables. The application of the proposed methodology is illustrated by designing centralized and decentralized velocity‐feedback H controllers to mitigate the seismic response of a five‐story building. It has been shown that the operator‐splitting method (OSM) provides explicit and unconditionally stable solutions for quasi‐static pseudo‐dynamic substructure testing. However, the OSM provides only an explicit target displacement but not an explicit target velocity, so that it is essentially an implicit method for real‐time substructure testing (RST) when the velocity‐dependent restoring force is considered. This paper proposes a target velocity formulation based on the forward difference of the predicted displacements so as to render the OSM explicit for RST. The stability and accuracy of the resulting OSM‐RST algorithm are investigated. It is shown that the OSM‐RST is unconditionally stable so long as the non‐linear stiffness and damping are of the softening type (i.e. the tangent stiffness and damping never exceed the initial values). The stability of the OSM‐RST for structures with infinite tangent damping coefficient or stiffness is also proved, and the stability of the method for MDOF structures with a non‐classical damping matrix is demonstrated by an energy criterion. The effects of actuator delay and compensation are analysed based on the bilinear approximation of the actuator step response. Experiments on damped SDOF and MDOF structures verify that the stability of the OSM‐RST is preserved when the experimental substructure generates velocity‐dependent reaction forces, whereas the stability of real‐time substructure tests based on the central difference method is worsened by the damping of the specimen.
