A nonlinear finite element model for earthquake response analysis of arch dam–water–foundation rock systems is proposed in this paper. The model includes dynamic dam–water and dam–foundation rock interactions, the opening of contraction joints, the radiation damping of semi‐unbounded foundation rock, the compressibility of impounded water, and the upstream energy propagating along the semi‐unbounded reservoir. Meanwhile, a new equivalent force scheme is suggested to achieve free‐field input in the model. The effects of the earthquake input mechanism, joint opening, water compressibility, and radiation damping on the earthquake response of the Ertan arch dam (240 m high) in China are investigated using the proposed model. The results show that these factors significantly affect the earthquake response of the Ertan arch dam. Such factors should therefore be considered in the earthquake response analysis and earthquake safety evaluation of high arch dams. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this study, two different earthquake input models are introduced, i.e. massless foundation model and viscous-spring boundary input model considering radiation damping. Linear elastic and nonlinear contraction joint opening analyses of the 210 m high Dagangshan arch dam under construction in China are performed using the two different earthquake input models. First, the responses of the three-dimensional (3-D) canyon without the dam are analyzed, respectively, with massless-truncated foundation and with viscous-spring boundary; second, linear and nonlinear analyses of the dam–foundation system are performed and compared by using the two input models. Hydrodynamic effects are considered using finite element discretization for incompressible reservoir fluid. It is concluded that stresses and displacements and contraction joint opening in the dam are significantly reduced both in linear and nonlinear analyses when using viscous-spring boundary model. Interestingly, in the case of linear analysis of the Dagangshan, the massless foundation input model with a relatively higher damping ratio of 10% leads to a comparable response of the dam to that using viscous-spring boundary model. In addition, the maximum tensile stresses from nonlinear analysis are 10–25% larger than that of the corresponding linear cases due to a partial release of the arch action.  相似文献

The finite and infinite element coupling system is used to study the effects of canyon topography and geological conditions on strong ground motion. The system is first applied to a semi-cylindrical shaped canyon using SH wave propagation to verify its accuracy. It is concluded that different topography conditions may have important effects on the ground motions along the canyon. The geological conditions, by which we mean different softening of weathered strata of the canyon surface, will have significantly amplified effects on the free field motions. This fact suggests that a deep weathered rock excavation of arch dam abutments for stability purposes will also benefit earthquake resistance of the dam due to the reduction of ground motions of the sound rock.  相似文献

The available substructure method and computer program for earthquake response analysis of arch dams, including the effects of dam–water–foundation rock interaction and recognizing the semi‐unbounded size of the foundation rock and fluid domains, are extended to consider spatial variations in ground motions around the canyon. The response of Mauvoisin Dam in Switzerland to spatially varying ground motion recorded during a small earthquake is analyzed to illustrate the results from this analysis procedure. In this work, a ghost-cell immersed boundary method is proposed for the hydrodynamic response of earthquake excited dam-reservoirs. The numerical method employs a second order accurate two-step projection algorithm including compressibility effects in pressure field due to earthquake. The effects of reservoir bottom absorption are treated by introducing damping terms into the momentum equations. Hydrodynamic response of earthquake excited dam with a sloping face is simulated to demonstrate the accuracy of the present numerical method. Numerical results compared with previous numerical and analytical solutions show that the present immersed boundary method can accurately compute the hydrodynamic forces on inclined and curved dam faces including the effects of water compressibility and reservoir bottom absorption for the possibility of resonance. The proposed numerical method was shown to have significant advantages in computational time and memory usage for the hydrodynamic simulation of large dam-reservoirs with arbitrary geometries. Hydrodynamic forces on a double curvature arch dam subjected to real earthquake induced ground motion are also simulated to demonstrate the capability of the method.  相似文献

In this study, the earthquake damage response of the concrete gravity dams is investigated with considering the effects of dam–reservoir interaction. A continuum damage model which is a second-order tensor and includes the strain softening behavior is selected for the concrete material. The mesh-dependent hardening technique is adopted such that the fracture energy dissipated is not affected by the finite element mesh size. The dynamic equilibrium equations of motion are solved by using the improved form of the HHT-α time integration algorithm. Two dimensional seismic analysis of Koyna gravity dam is performed by using the 1967 Koyna earthquake records. The effects of damage on the earthquake response of concrete gravity dams are discussed. Comparison of the Westergaard and Lagrangian dam–reservoir interaction solutions is made. The effects of viscous damping ratio on the damage response of the dam are also studied.  相似文献

An economical approach was developed to examine the effect of radiation damping on earthquake response of pilesupported offshore platforms. Parameteric studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of radiation damping on response. Various features of this effect were found for pile head stiffnesses, and responses of platforms subjected to harmonic and earthquake excitations.  相似文献

Lateral response of dams in semi-elliptical rigid canyons   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
An analytical closed-form solution is developed for the lateral response of earth and rockfill dams built in semi-elliptical canyons. The dam is idealized as a linearly hysteretic elastic body deforming only in shear, whereas the canyon is assumed to be rigid. The solution for the dam response is given in terms of prolate spheroidal radial and angular functions of the first kind and zero order. Results are presented for natural frequencies, modal displacement shapes, participation factors, and response to transient and steady-state harmonic base excitation for various dam length-to-height ratios. Comparisons are made of the effects of the length-to-height ratio and the canyon shape on the response of dams built in semi-elliptical and rectangular canyons. A subsequent study (Dakoulas, P. & Hsu, C.H., Response of earth dams in semi-elliptical flexible canyons to oblique SH waves, Report, Rice University, Houston, Texas, 1993) extends this model to a semi-elliptical canyon consisting of flexible elastic rock, subjected to obliquely incident harmonic SH waves.  相似文献

In this study, the nonlinear seismic analysis of a typical three-dimensional concrete faced rockfill dam is reported. Three components of the Loma Prieta (Gilroy 1 station) earthquake acceleration time history are used as input excitation. The dam under study is considered as if it were located in a prismatic canyon with a trapezoidal cross-section. A nonlinear model for the rockfill material is used, and contact elements with Coulomb friction law are utilized at the slab–rockfill interface. Vertical joints in the face slab are also considered in the finite element model. A substructure method, in which the unbounded soil is modelled by the scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM), is used to obtain the scattered motion and interaction forces along the canyon. The dam is subjected to spatially variable P, SV, and SH waves, and the effect of dam–foundation interaction and the reservoir water effects are considered. The results are compared with the non-scattered input motion analysis. Results of the analyses indicate that due to applying the scattered motion to the canyon the response of the dam and concrete face slab significantly increases. The reservoir water pressure affects the tensile stresses induced in the face slab by reducing the uplift movement of the concrete panels.Large horizontal axial forces are induced in the face slab due to out-of-phase and out-of-plane motions of the abutments. Although the normal movements of vertical joints are reduced due to the reservoir water confinement, the opening movements are still significant, and the local failure of construction joints is inevitable.

Earthquake safety assessment of concrete arch and gravity dams   总被引:9,自引:1,他引:8
Based on research studies currently being carried out at Dalian University of Technology, some important aspects for the earthquake safety assessment of concrete dams are reviewed and discussed. First, the rate-dependent behavior of concrete subjected to earthquake loading is examined, emphasizing the properties of concrete under cyclic and biaxial loading conditions. Second, a modified four-parameter Hsieh-Ting-Chen viscoplastic consistency model is developed to simulate the rate-dependent behavior of concrete. The earthquake response of a 278m high arch dam is analyzed, and the results show that the strain-rate effects become noticeable in the inelastic range. Third, a more accurate non-smooth Newton algorithm for the solution of three-dimensional frictional contact problems is developed to study the joint opening effects of arch dams during strong earthquakes. Such effects on two nearly 300m high arch dams have been studied. It was found that the canyon shape has great influence on the magnitude and distribution of the joint opening along the dam axis. Fourth, the scaled boundary finite element method presented by Song and Wolf is employed to study the dam-reservoir-foundation interaction effects of concrete dams. Particular emphases were placed on the variation of foundation stiffness and the anisotropic behavior of the foundation material on the dynamic response of concrete dams. Finally, nonlinear modeling of concrete to study the damage evolution of concrete dams during strong earthquakes is discussed. An elastic-damage mechanics approach for damage prediction of concrete gravity dams is described as an example. These findings are helpful in understanding the dynamic behavior of concrete dams and promoting the improvement of seismic safety assessment methods.  相似文献

The overall damping of linear arch dam-water-foundation rock systems depends on the material damping of dam concrete, the material and radiation damping of semi-unbounded foundation rock, and the dam-water interaction. In this paper, the effective damping ratio of these factors is separately evaluated for Mauvoisin arch dam in Switzerland to quantitatively discuss their contributions, and to guide the damping selection in the numerical analysis. This paper also aims to investigate if the material and radiation damping of the foundation rock can be replaced by increasing the material damping of the dam to simplify numerical analysis models. The seismic responses of Mauvoisin arch dam are analyzed using the semi-unbounded and massless foundation models, respectively. The results show that the overall effective damping ratio of the system can be approximately expressed as the summation of the individual effective damping and thus the increased material damping of the dam can approximate the material and radiation damping of the semi-unbounded foundation rock.  相似文献

Two processes using the Newmark implicit integration scheme are presented for the analysis of the earthquake response of a three-dimensional model for arch dam-reservoir systems including the effect of compressibility of the water. The solid structure and fluid regions are modelled separately, and the forcing functions at the interface are due to the hydrodynamic pressures from the reservoir acting on the upstream face of the dam wall, and the accelerations from the dam wall acting in turn on the reservoir. For the purposes of an initial investigation, elastic properties are assumed for the material of the dam, whilst in the reservoir radiation damping at the upstream boundary has been included, but bottom absorption has not. The excitation is provided by means of a combisweep which is fashioned so that its continuously varying frequencies pass through the fundamental frequencies of both the arch dam-reservoir system and the reservoir alone. Consequently the response is highly resonant, thus providing a severe test for the numerical procedures. From the numerical results obtained for an example problem it is concluded that both schemes provide an acceptable solution to the problem posed, and the possibility of enhancement to cater for more complex situations is discussed.  相似文献

This paper presents the application of the finite element method for analysing the two-dimensional response of reservoir-dam systems subjected to horizontal ground motion. The interaction between the dam and the reservoir as well as the compressibility of water has been taken into account. The complete system has been considered to be composed of two substructures, namely the reservoir and the dam. To take into account the large extent of the reservoir, it has been idealized using specially developed infinite elements coupled with standard finite elements while the dam is represented using finite elements alone. Structural damping of the dam and radiation damping in the fluid phase have been accounted for in the analysis. It is concluded that the effect of radiation damping is considerable at high frequencies of excitation. The coupled response of the system is significantly large at and near the fundamental natural frequency of the system in comparison to the uncoupled responses. The method is computationally quite economical, capable of taking into account the arbitrary geometry of the system and is recommended for practical application. Further applications and extensions of the approach to three dimensional analyses are possible.  相似文献

El Infiernillo, a 145 m high rockfill dam in Mexico built in a narrow V-shaped canyon, was subjected to eight major earthquakes since its construction. In this study, the dynamic dam response is analysed using (i) the recorded November 15, 1975 bedrock-crest acceleration histories and (ii) the results of a 1970 full-scale test conducted by UNAM, in which eight upstream–downstream and longitudinal resonant frequencies and configurations were observed and documented. These observed and seismically induced dynamic responses are compared herein to predictions of two different numerical models of El Infiernillo dam; a newly developed simplified three-dimensional (3D) model, and a 3D finite element model. The dynamic dam response characteristics are assessed, and performance of the employed numerical models is evaluated. It is found that (i) higher modes of vibration had participated significantly in the recorded seismic response and (ii) upstream–downstream response is well represented by the two numerical models employed. Using the simplified model, the September 19, 1985 earthquake non-linear response is computed and shown to compare satisfactorily with its recorded counterpart in the upstream-downstream and vertical directions. The largest computed dynamic accelerations, stresses and strains are found to occur within the upper third of the dam body.  相似文献

A rigorous analytical solution is developed for the lateral linear shear response of embankment dams in semi-cylindrical valleys. Closed-form algebraic expressions are presented pertaining to both free and base-induced oscillations, and extensive parametric and comparative studies elucidate the prominent effects of canyon geometry (shape and aspect ratio) on dynamic response. Harmonic steady-state as well as earthquake-induced accelerations, displacements and shear strains in the dam are studied and compared with those obtained from 3-Dimensional analyses for other canyon geometries, as well as from 2-Dimensional (2-D) analyses of the dam mid-section. It is shown that such 2-D analyses may provide significantly lower values of near-crest accelerations, but slightly higher values of shear strains and stresses than the 3-D analyses. The proposed method of analysis is at least three orders of magnitude less expensive than other presently available numerical procedures.  相似文献

An analysis procedure in the frequency domain is developed for determining the earthquake response of two-dimensional concrete gravity and embankment dams including hydrodynamic effects; responses of the elastic dams and compressible water are assumed linear. The dam and fluid domain are treated as substructures and modelled with finite elements. The only geometric restriction is that an infinite fluid domain must maintain a constant depth beyond some point in the upstream direction. For such an infinite uniform region, a finite element discretization over the depth is combined with a continuum representation in the upstream direction. The fluid domain model approximately accounts for interaction between the fluid and underlying foundation medium through a damping boundary condition applied along the reservoir bottom, while the dam foundation is assumed rigid. Several examples are presented to demonstrate the accuracy of the fluid domain model and to illustrate dam responses obtained from the analysis procedure.  相似文献
