The ‘Calcaires à Productus’ of the Montagne Noire are microbial build-ups. Two formations are defined and dated respectively as Uppermost Visean (Upper Warnantian–Brigantian) and Serpukhovian on the basis on corals. That makes these limestones out to be younger than previously stated (Lower and base of Upper Warnantian–Asbian and base of Brigantian) and indicates that the development of the olistoliths and thrusts including them, due to the Variscan orogeny, was at least as young as the Upper Serpukhovian. The Serpukhovian limestones of the Montagne Noire are correlated with the Lanet Limestone (Mouthoumet Massif, Corbières) and Ardengost Limestone (central Pyrenees). Late Frasnian mounds of the Yunghsien Formation, Guilin, South China, developed as part of the Guilin platform, mostly in reef‐flat and platform margin settings. Microbial mounds in platform margin settings at Hantang, about 10 km west of Guilin, contain Frasnian biota, such as Stachyodes and Kuangxiastraea and, thus, occur below the Frasnian‐Famennian mass extinction boundary. Platform margin facies were dominated by microbes, algae and receptaculitids. Massive corals and stromatoporoids are not common and rarely show reef‐building functions as they did in Givetian time. The margin mounds are composed of brachiopod‐receptaculitid cementstone, and a variety of boundstones that contain Rothpletzella, Renalcis, thrombolite and stromatolite. Other microbial communities include Girvanella, Izhella, Ortonella and Wetheredella. Solenoporoid algae are abundant locally. Zebra structures and neptunian dykes are well‐developed at some intervals. Pervasive early cementation played an important role in lithification of the microbial boundstones and rudstones. Frasnian reefs of many regions of the world were constructed by stromatoporoids and corals, although a shift to calcimicrobe‐dominated frameworks occurred before the Famennian. However, the exact ages of many Frasnian margin outcrops are poorly constrained owing to difficulties dating shallow carbonate facies. The Hantang mounds represent a microbe‐dominated reef‐building community with rare skeletal reef builders, consistent with major Late Devonian changes in reef composition, diversity and guild structure occurring before the end of the Frasnian. A similar transition occurred in the Canning Basin of Western Australia, but coeval successions in North America, Western Europe and the northern Urals are either less well‐known or represent different bathymetric settings. The transition in reef‐building style below the Frasnian‐Famennian boundary is documented here in the two best exposed successions on two continents, which may have been global. Set in the larger context of Late Devonian and Mississippian microbial reef‐building, the Hantang mounds help to demonstrate that controls on microbial reef communities differed from those on larger skeletal reef biota. Calcimicrobes replaced stromatoporoids as major reef builders before the Frasnian‐Famennian extinction event, and increasing stromatoporoid diversity towards the end of the Famennian did not result in a resurgence of skeletal reef frameworks. Calcimicrobes dominated margin facies through the Famennian, but declined near the Devonian‐Carboniferous boundary. Stromatolite and thrombolite facies, which occurred behind the mound margin at Hantang, rose to dominate Mississippian shallow‐water reef frameworks with only a minor resurgence of the important Frasnian calcimicrobe Renalcis in the Visean when well‐skeletonized organisms (corals) also became volumetrically significant frame builders again.  相似文献

Abstract Successions across the Middle–Upper Jurassic disconformity in the Lusitanian Basin (west‐central Portugal) are highly varied, and were probably developed on a large westward‐inclined hangingwall of a half‐graben. The disconformity is preceded by a complex forced regression showing marked variations down the ramp, and provides an example of the effects of rapid, relative sea‐level falls on carbonate ramp systems. In the east, Middle Jurassic inner ramp carbonates (‘Candeeiros’ facies) are capped by a palaeokarstic surface veneered by ferruginous clays or thick calcretes. In the west, mid‐outer ramp marls and limestones (‘Brenha’ facies) are terminated by two contrasting successions: (1) a sharp‐based carbonate sandbody capped by a minor erosion surface, overlain by interbedded marine–lagoonal–deltaic deposits with further minor erosion/exposure surfaces; (2) a brachiopod‐rich limestone with a minor irregular surface, overlain by marls, lignitic marls with marine and reworked non‐marine fossils and charophytic limestones, with further minor irregular surfaces and capped by a higher relief ferruginous erosional surface. The age ranges from Late Bathonian in the east to Late Callovian in the west. This disconformity assemblage is succeeded by widespread lacustrine–lagoonal limestones with microbial laminites and evaporites (‘Cabaços’ facies), attributed to the Middle Oxfordian. Over the whole basin, increasingly marine facies were deposited afterwards. In Middle Jurassic inner‐ramp zones in the east, the overall regression is marked by a major exposure surface overlain by continental sediments. In Middle Jurassic outer‐ramp zones to the west, the regression is represented initially by open‐marine successions followed by either a sharp marine erosion surface overlain by a complex sandbody or minor discontinuities and marginal‐marine deposits, in both cases capped by the major lowstand surface. Reflooding led to a complex pattern of depositional conditions throughout the basin, from freshwater and brackish lagoonal to marginal‐ and shallow‐marine settings. Additional complications were produced by possible tilting of the hangingwall of the half‐graben, the input of siliciclastics from westerly sources and climate change from humid to more seasonally semi‐arid conditions. The Middle–Late Jurassic sea‐level fall in the Lusitanian Basin is also recorded elsewhere within the Iberian and other peri‐Atlantic regions and matches a transgressive to regressive change in eustatic sea‐level curves, indicating that it is related in part to a global event.  相似文献

Distinctive, metre‐scale antiformal structures are well developed in a Famennian carbonate platform in the Chedda Cliffs area of the Lennard Shelf reef complexes. The structures are distinguished by chevron‐shaped crests and thickened cores and contain abundant non‐skeletal allochems (ooids/pisoids, peloids and intraclasts) of silt to pebble size and variably developed laminations and fenestrae. The internal morphology and pervasive occurrence of fenestral clotted and wavy laminated fabrics suggest that these structures are microbial mounds composed of agglutinated stromatolites and thrombolites. Microbial fabrics most probably originated through sediment trapping and binding by microbial mats with early lithification involving microbial calcification and cementation of trapped sediment. The facies and stratigraphic context of the mounds support a shallow subtidal, transitional backreef to reef‐flat setting; however, alone these mounds do not provide unequivocal environmental information. Other large antiformal structures in Famennian platforms on the Lennard Shelf, previously described as tepee structures, show morphological similarities to the Chedda Cliffs mounds, which suggests that these other structures may also be microbial mounds. The presence of microbial mounds in platform successions further highlights the importance of microbial communities in the Lennard Shelf reef complexes.  相似文献

The Oligocene represents a key interval during which coralline algae became dominant on carbonate ramps and luxuriant coral reefs emerged on a global scale. So far, few studies have considered the impact that these early reefs had on ramp development. Consequently, this study aimed at presenting a high‐resolution analysis of the Attard Member of the Lower Coralline Limestone Formation (Late Oligocene, Malta) in order to decipher the internal and external factors controlling the architecture of a typical Late Oligocene platform. Excellent exposures of the Lower Coralline Limestone Formation occurring along continuous outcrops adjacent to the Victoria Lines Fault reveal in detail the three‐dimensional distribution of the reef‐associated facies. A total of four sedimentary facies have been recognized and are grouped into two depositional environments that correspond to the inner and middle carbonate ramp. The inner ramp was characterized by a very high‐energy, shallow‐water setting, influenced by tide and wave processes. This setting passed downslope into an inner‐ramp depositional environment which was colonized by seagrass and interfingered with adjacent areas containing scattered corals. The middle ramp lithofacies were deposited in the oligophotic zone, the sediments being generated from combined in situ production and sediments swept from the shallower inner ramp by currents. Compositional characteristics and facies distributions of the Attard ramp are more similar to the Miocene ramps than to those of the Eocene. An important factor controlling this similarity may be the expansion of the seagrass colonization within the euphotic zone. This expansion may have commenced in the Late Oligocene and was associated with a concomitant reduction in the aerial extent of the larger benthonic foraminifera facies. Stacking‐pattern analysis shows that the depositional units (parasequences) at the study section are arranged into transgressive–regressive facies cycles. This cyclicity is superimposed on the overall regressive phase recorded by the Attard succession. Furthermore, a minor highstand (correlated with the Ru4/Ch1 sequence) and subsequent minor lowstand (Ch2 sequence) have been recognized. The biota assemblages of the Attard Member suggest that carbonate sedimentation took place in subtropical waters and oligotrophic to slightly mesotrophic conditions. The apparent low capacity of corals to form wave‐resistant reef structures is considered to have been a significant factor affecting substrate stability at this time. The resulting lack of resistant mid‐ramp reef frameworks left this zone exposed to wave and storm activity, thereby encouraging the widespread development of coralline algal associations dominated by rhodoliths.  相似文献

Well‐cuttings, wireline logs and limited core and outcrop data were used to generate a regional, three‐dimensional sequence framework for Upper Mississippian (Chesterian), Greenbrier Group carbonates in the Appalachian foreland basin, West Virginia, USA. The resulting maps were used to document the stratigraphic response of the basin to tectonics and to glacio‐eustasy during the transition into ice‐house conditions. The ramp facies include inner ramp red beds and aeolianites, lagoonal muddy carbonates, mid‐ramp ooid and skeletal grainstone shoal complexes, and outer ramp wackestone–mudstone, that grades downslope into laminated silty lime mudstone. The facies make up fourth‐order sequences, a few metres to over 90 m (300 ft) thick. The sequences are bounded along the ramp margin by lowstand sandstones and calcareous siltstones. On the ramp, sequence boundaries are overlain by thin transgressive siliciclastics and aeolianites, and only a few are calichified. Maximum flooding surfaces on the outer ramp lie beneath deeper water facies that overlie lowstand to transgressive siliciclastic or carbonate units. On the shallow ramp, maximum flooding surfaces overlie siliciclastic‐prone transgressive systems tracts, that are overlain by highstand carbonates with significant grainstone units interlayered with lagoonal lime mudstones. The fourth‐order sequences are the major mappable subsurface units; they are bundled into weak composite sequences which are bounded by red beds. In spite of differential subsidence rates across the foreland basin (1 to 3 cm/k.y. up to 25 cm/k.y.), eustatic sea‐level changes controlled regional sequence development. Thrust‐load induced differential subsidence of fault‐blocks, coupled with in‐plane stress, controlled the rapid basinward thickening of the depositional wedge, whose thickness and facies were influenced by subtle structures such as arches trending at high angles as well as parallel to the margin.  相似文献

In the Late Cambrian, the North China Platform was a typical carbonate ramp platform. The Upper Cambrian of the northern part of the North China Platform is famous for the development of bioherm limestones and storm calcirudites and can be divided from bottom to top into the Gushan, Changshan and Fengshan formations. In this set of strata, the deep-ramp mudstone and marls and the shallow-ramp packstones and grainstones constitute many carbonate meter-scale cycles of subtidal type. More tidal-flat dolomites axe developed in the Upper Cambrian of the southern margin of the North China platform, in which limestone and dolomite beds also constitute many carbonate meter-scale cycles of the peritidal type. These cycles are marked by a variety of litho-facies successions. There are regularly vertical stacking patterns of meter-scale cycles in long-term third-order sequences, which is the key to discerning such sequences. Third-order sequence is marked by a particular sedimentary-facies succession that is the result of the environment-changing process of deepening and shoaling, which is genetically related to third-order sea level changes. Furthermore, four third-order sequences can be grouped in the Upper Cambrian of the North China Platform. The main features of these four third-order sequences in the northern part of the platform can be summarized as follows: firstly, sequence-boundaries are characterized by drowning unconformities; secondly, the sedimentary-facies succession is generally constituted by one from deep-ramp facies to shallow-ramp facies; thirdly, a succession of “CS (?) HST” (i.e., “condensed section and highstand system”) forms these four third-order sequences. The chief features for the third-order sequences in the southern part of the North China Platform comprises: more dolomites are developed in the HSTs of third-order sequences and also developed more carbonate meter-scale cycles of peritidal types; the sedimentary-facies succession of the third-order sequences is marked by “shallow ramp-tidal flat”; the sequence boundaries are characterized by exposure punctuated surfaces. According to the changes for the third-order sequences from the north to the south, a regular sequence-stratigraphic framework can be established. From cycles to sequences, the study of sequence stratigraphy from litho-facies successions to sedimentary-facies successions exposes that as follows: meter-scale cycles that are used as the basic working unit actually are litho-facies successions formed by the mechanism of a punctuated aggradational cycle, and third-order sequences that are constituted by regularly vertical stacking patterns of meter-scale cycles are marked by sedimentary-facies successions. On the basis of the changing curve of water depth at each section, the curve of the relative third-order sea level changes in the late Cambrian of the North China Platform can be integrated qualitatively from changing curve of water depth. The correlation of Late Cambrian long-term sea level changes between North China and North America demonstrates that there are not only similarities but also differences, reflecting control of long-term sea level changes both by global eustacy and by regional factors.  相似文献

During the Aptian, some carbonate platforms of the sub‐tropical realm (for example, on the northern Tethys margin or in the Gulf of Mexico) were affected repeatedly by severe perturbations in the carbonate production factory and drowning, preferentially during global warming events such as the Early Aptian Oceanic Anoxic Event 1a and a prominent mid‐Late Aptian warming interval. These platform growth crises have been explained mainly by strongly increased coastal runoff (for example, siliciclastics and nutrients) in combination with pronounced eustatic sea‐level rises. In the last few years, increasing evidence suggests that carbonate platforms of lower latitudes were generally less or even not affected by environmental perturbations during these events. This raises the question as to the responsible factors that promoted platform growth or decline in different latitudinal areas. In this study, Upper Aptian (Middle Gargasian to Uppermost Clansayesian) inner‐tropical carbonate ramp deposits of the Serdj Formation at Djebel Serdj, north‐central Tunisia are studied in detail with regard to microfacies, lithology, biostratigraphy and chemostratigraphy. These data allow reconstruction of the palaeoenvironmental evolution of the Tunisian carbonate platform margin and investigation of its response to the prominent mid‐Late Aptian warming interval. The unusually expanded, 600 m thick Serdj Formation consists of limestones, marlstones and siltstones, suggesting deposition within mid‐ramp to inner‐ramp palaeoenvironments. Deposits of the mid‐Late Aptian are represented by quartz‐rich platform carbonates and siltstones, probably resulting from increased coastal runoff on the Tunisian shelf as a response to global warming and accelerated water cycling. The siliciclastic input was accompanied by elevated nutrient levels as indicated by a partial decline in the abundance of oligotrophic biota and mass occurrences of orbitolines and green algae. Carbonate platform drowning during the mid‐Late Aptian, as reported from the sub‐tropical realm, has not been identified. A comparison with other tropical river‐influenced platforms suggests that none of them drowned during the mid‐Late Aptian. One important reason might be widespread arid to semi‐arid climatic conditions within lower latitudes during that time, promoting platform growth due to comparably low nutrient runoff.  相似文献

Mud-mound complexes identified within the early to middle Ashgill Cystoid Limestone Formation of northeastern Spain are the first fossil build-ups to be described in the high latitude north-facing margin of Gondwana. Mud-mound complexes comprise individual lenticular mounds (composed of floatstones, cephalopod-rich mudstones and cementstones), flanks and intermound deposits (including pelmatozoan packstones and floatstones). The small mounds are mainly composed of bryozoans, cystoids and crinoids, and were developed on outer ramp environments. Mound initiation depended upon the stabilization and colonization of densely packed lenses of pelmatozoan-rich sediments. In a mid-ramp setting, pelmatozoan–bryozoan meadows were episodically degraded by common wave- and storm-induced processes, the development of semi-consolidated substrates, and the periodic influx of terrigenous material. Finally, during the Hirnantian regression, the Iberian mixed (carbonate–siliciclastic) platform was exposed to subaerial conditions sufficiently for erosion and karstification to occur. From a palaeogeographical point of view, the pattern of the Ashgill Iberian platform deposition is characterized by episodic exclusion of carbonates from most nearshore environments by a shoreline source of siliciclastic sediments. A similar interpretation to that made on the Iberian Cystoid Limestone Formation, in terms of gradual proximality–distality changes, is proposed for comparable facies types in Ashgill limestones described in southwestern Europe. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Abstract

The tertonic interpretation of the Montagne Noire Gneiss Dome (southern French II Massif (Central) has been controversial for a long time. Several models have been proposed : diapirie uplift, wreneching and diapirism, compressive anticline, and metamorphie core complex. Evidence for extensional tectonics in the French Varisean Belt favours the latter interpretation. Strain and metamorphism patterns in the eastern part of the Montagne Noire result from two successive extensional deformations during Late Carboniferous to Permian times. The occurrence of a major detachment zone along the northern edge of the Montagne Noire Gneiss Dome as well the presence of sedimentary) basias to the north point to the asymmetry) of the Stephanian-Permian extensional system. We propose a new model of gneiss dome involving isostatie uprising and consecutive tectonic denudation of the duetile lower crust. This process results in asymmetrical extensional systems characterized by roll-under folding of the footwall and development of basins in the hangingwall as in the Montagne Noire. The model is finally discussed in comparison to previous interpretations.  相似文献

Carbonates of Mississippian age (Viséan) in the Midale Beds, Charles Formation of southeastern Saskatchewan, Canada, produce significant amounts of hydrocarbons. The Midale Beds represent deposition in a shallow-water, periodically restricted, epeiric setting. The sedimentation is characterized by a variety of shallow-water carbonate lithologies ranging from wackestone, packstone, grainstone, to microbial boundstone. Algae, calcimicrobes, and related microbial fabrics are common features in these limestones. Cores and thin sections through the Midale Beds in the Glen Ewen and Midale pools of southeastern Saskatchewan were examined in order to study the contribution of calcimicrobes and microbial fabrics to the sedimentation of Mississippian carbonate rocks in southeastern Saskatchewan. Calcimicrobes and microbial fabrics are the important components in the grainstones and microbial boundstone. The calcimicrobes are commonly found as porostromate forms, including Garwoodia sp. and Ortonella sp., and other forms such as Archaeolithoporella-like, Girvanella-like, Wetheredella-like, and problematic microbes also occur but are not common. Microbial fabrics are characterized by microstromatolites, microbial laminations, thrombolite, clotted peloids, and fenestrate forms. Calcimicrobes stabilized grains and modified and created sediments, and the related syndepositional microbial fabrics affected the development of porosity/permeability of Midale carbonates. Calcimicrobes and microbial fabrics in Midale Beds highlighted a significant account of microbial facies associated with the Mississippian carbonates worldwide.  相似文献

The isolated outlier of Visean (Mid Mississippian) limestones and sandstones near Corwen, North Wales, UK, provides a critical constraint on regional tectonic and palaeogeographical models. The late Asbian to Brigantian succession comprises a series of shoaling‐upwards cycles (parasequences). These were the product of forced, glacioeustatic regressions and have boundaries that testify to emergence, karstic dissolution and soil formation on a low gradient carbonate platform prior to flooding and the resumption of marine deposition. The recognition of two of the main marker beds within the North Wales Visean succession (Main Shale and Coral Bed) together with a newly applied foraminiferal and algal biozonation allow the outlier succession to be correlated with other Visean outcrops in the region and more widely throughout the British Isles. In revealing regional thickness and facies variations, these comparisons show that the outlier succession was deposited landward of the early Asbian shoreline in a region of enhanced subsidence localized along the Bala Lineament. The Corwen Outlier suggests that, within narrow gulfs associated with the region's major tectonic lineaments, Mississippian carbonate facies extended farther south into the contemporary hinterland of older rocks and that, in response to Brigantian climate change, these topographic features likely also influenced fluvial catchments supplying siliciclastic sediment to the platform's landward margin and, subsequently, Namurian deltas. Contrary to earlier suggestions, Visean outcrop patterns, facies distributions and thicknesses in the vicinity of the Bala Lineament can be explained without the need to invoke extensive post‐depositional lateral displacements. The Carboniferous succession in the Tindouf Basin of southern Morocco, North Africa, displays Mississippian to Early Pennsylvanian marine beds, followed by Pennsylvanian continental deposits. The marine beds comprise a shallow water cyclic platform sequence, dominated by shales and fine‐grained sandstones with thin but laterally persistent limestone/dolostone beds. Foraminiferal assemblages have been studied in the limestone beds in several sections from the Djebel Ouarkziz range in the northern limb of the Tindouf Syncline; they indicate that the age of the limestones range from late Asbian (late Viséan) to Krasnopolyanian (early Bashkirian). The foraminiferal assemblages are abundant and diverse, and much richer in diversity than those suggested by previous studies in the region, as well as for other areas of the western Palaeotethys. The richest assemblages are recorded in the Serpukhovian but, unusually, they contain several taxa which appear much earlier in Western European basins (in the latest Viséan). In contrast, conodont assemblages are scarce due to the shallow‐water facies, although some important taxa are recorded in the youngest limestones. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This work focuses on well‐exposed Lower Triassic sedimentary rocks in the area of Torrey (south‐central Utah, USA). The studied Smithian 8 deposits record a large‐scale third‐order sea‐level cycle, which permits a detailed reconstruction of the evolution of depositional settings. During the middle Smithian, peritidal microbial limestones associated with a rather low‐diversity benthic fauna were deposited seaward of the tidal flat siliciclastic red beds. Associated with siliceous sponges, microbial limestones formed small m‐scale patch reefs. During the late middle to late Smithian interval, the sedimentary system is characterized by tidal flat dolostones of an interior platform, ooid‐bioclastic deposits of a tide‐dominated shoal complex, and mid‐shelf bioclastic limestones. Microbial deposits, corresponding to sparse stromatolites formed in the interior platform, are contemporaneous with a well‐diversified marine fauna living in a seaward shoal complex and mid‐shelf area. The nature and distribution of these Smithian microbial deposits are not related to any particular deleterious environmental condition, highlighting that observed patterns of biotic recovery after the end‐Permian mass extinction were directly influenced by depositional settings. Facies evolution and stratal stacking patterns allow us to identify large, medium and small‐scale, as well as elementary depositional sequences. Large‐ and medium‐scale sequences are consistent with sea‐level changes, whereas small‐scale and elementary sequences are better explained by autocyclic processes. Dating the magmatism in the Montagne Noire gneiss dome in the southern French Massif Central is a key point for understanding the Late Palaeozoic evolution of this part of the Variscan belt, which is characterised by compressive tectonics during the Carboniferous and extensional tectonics during Stephanian-Permian times. The Montalet granite crops out in the north-western part of the dome and was first considered as an early syntectonic intrusion related to compressive deformation. More recently, it has been dated at 327 Ma and considered as contemporaneous with the diapiric ascent of the Montagne Noire gneiss dome before the Stephanian-Permian extension. We show that in fact, this pluton was emplaced 294 ± 1 Ma ago and is therefore contemporaneous with the Stephanian-Permian extension. This age is consistent with the interpretation of the Montagne Noire Massif as an extensional gneiss dome.  相似文献
