Geospatial data sciences have emerged as critical requirements for high-priority application solutions in diverse areas, including, but not limited to, the mitigation of natural and man-made disasters. Three sets of metrics, adopted or customized from geo-statistics, applied meteorology and signal processing, are tested in terms of their ability to evaluate geospatial datasets, specifically two population databases commonly used for disaster preparedness and consequence management. The two high-resolution, grid-based population datasets are the following: The LandScan dataset available from the Geographic Information Science and Technology (GIST) group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), and the Gridded Population of the World (GPW) dataset available from the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) group at Columbia University. Case studies evaluate population data across the globe, specifically, the metropolitan areas of Washington DC, USA, Los-Angeles, USA, and Houston, USA, and London, UK, as well as the country of Iran. The geospatial metrics confirm that the two population datasets have significant differences, especially in the context of their utility for disaster readiness and mitigation. While this paper primarily focuses on grid based population datasets and disaster management applications, the sets of metrics developed here can be generalized to other geospatial datasets and applications. Future research needs to develop metrics for geospatial and temporal risks and associated uncertainties in the context of disaster management. The U. S. Gridded population distribution data are finding increasing use in a wide range of fields, including resource allocation, disease burden estimation and climate change impact assessment. Land cover information can be used in combination with detailed settlement extents to redistribute aggregated census counts to improve the accuracy of national-scale gridded population data. In East Africa, such analyses have been done using regional land cover data, thus restricting application of the approach to this region. If gridded population data are to be improved across Africa, an alternative, consistent and comparable source of land cover data is required. Here these analyses were repeated for Kenya using four continent-wide land cover datasets combined with detailed settlement extents and accuracies were assessed against detailed census data. The aim was to identify the large area land cover dataset that, combined with detailed settlement extents, produce the most accurate population distribution data. The effectiveness of the population distribution modelling procedures in the absence of high resolution census data was evaluated, as was the extrapolation ability of population densities between different regions. Results showed that the use of the GlobCover dataset refined with detailed settlement extents provided significantly more accurate gridded population data compared to the use of refined AVHRR-derived, MODIS-derived and GLC2000 land cover datasets. This study supports the hypothesis that land cover information is important for improving population distribution model accuracies, particularly in countries where only coarse resolution census data are available. Obtaining high resolution census data must however remain the priority. With its higher spatial resolution and its more recent data acquisition, the GlobCover dataset was found as the most valuable resource to use in combination with detailed settlement extents for the production of gridded population datasets across large areas.  相似文献

Interoperability is becoming essential for the today’s geographic information systems. Geographic information is usually available as datasets stored in databases and accessible via GIS. However, these information sources are increasingly heterogeneous and show differences in data formats, database schema and object concepts. To satisfy the increased demand for the use and sharing of geographic data in common applications, considering the heterogeneity and the methods to support interoperability are required by the GIS community. The implementation of Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) such as the European INSPIRE (Infrastructure for Spatial Information in the European Community) enables accessibility and the sharing of geographic data and interoperability among the systems. In addition to this, traditional GIS systems perform spatial queries using a keyword-based method. However, this approach remains incapable of fully expressing the users' needs due to a lack of geographic concepts (semantics) in the dataset. Different terms may refer to similar concepts, while the same terms may refer to different concepts. This causes semantic heterogeneity in the dataset. In this context, the most promising approach is the implementation of geospatial semantics by means of ontology in the geospatial dataset to overcome this kind of ambiguity. The aim of this research is to investigate the implementation of INSPIRE as a SDI standard and the use of Semantic Technology to empower the traditional GIS approach. In this regard, a public transportation geoportal has been developed for the experimental investigation which uses a revised sample transportation data complaint with the INSPIRE Transport Network Data Theme and a developed Transportation Ontology Domain, including concepts, relationships and individuals to provide a semantic spatial search.  相似文献

One hundred school districts were surveyed along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts from North Carolina to Texas. Nearly all had recent experience with a tropical storm or hurricane and had hurricane plans in place. About half teach hurricane preparedness to students and 85 % train staff members in hurricane preparedness. Sources of information about cyclone threats were the National Hurricane Center (91 %), local television news (74 %), The Weather Channel (67 %), and the internet (67 %). Only 36 % would cancel classes for a hurricane warning but 89 % would cancel classes for a mandatory evacuation. Most districts (75 %) would use schools as storm shelters, and 92 % would use school busses to assist in community evacuations. Districts with a higher percentage of Hispanic population provided hurricane information in Spanish. Larger school districts were less likely to cancel classes in the middle of the day for a storm threat. Districts with higher home values were less likely to use school busses for evacuations, and smaller school districts were less likely to provide schools as storm shelters. There were no other significant associations between hurricane preparedness of the districts and district demographic variables of poverty, percent black, percent Hispanic, population, district size, or median home values.  相似文献

In the last decades, physically based distributed models turned out rather promising to achieve the space–time assessment of shallow landslides at large spatial scale. This technical note deals with the application of a physically based stability model named Shallow Landslides Instability Prediction (SLIP), which has been adopted by the Department of National Civil Protection of Italy as a prototype early warning system for rainfall-induced shallow landslides on national scale. The model is used as a main methodology to create space–time shallow landslide susceptibility maps based on a simple deterministic slope-stability approach, combined with high-resolution rainfall information and geographic information system-based geospatial datasets. The safety factor as an index to measure slope instability is modeled as function of topographic, geologic, geotechnical and hydrologic variables. Although the main aim of this work was to prove the operational viability of such model on a nationwide domain and some simplification are adopted at this stage, hind cast tests on some relevant case histories of shallow landslides occurred between October 2009 and October 2011 showed that the model has skill in representing both timing and location of those shallow landslides.  相似文献

Yellowstone National Park (YNP), Wyoming USA, contains over 10,000 geothermal features and 2 to 5 % of these features are geysers. Yellowstone has about half of the world’s geysers and the majority of YNP geysers are located in Upper geysers Basin. Beginning in 1970, details (time of eruption, height, duration, etc.) of about 25 geysers activities have been recorded in log books and later transcribed into an electronic dataset and posted on the park’s website. The data was collected by park rangers, visitors, and geyser enthusiasts, among others. The data collected by direct observation, camera, electronic, etc. The dataset contains a great deal of information that is relevant to scientists, educators and the public. However, the use of the dataset is severely limited without cleaning and standardization. Given the size, time span over which the data was collected, and the number of people involved in collecting the data, it’s inevitable that the data contains many inconsistencies. The dataset has been cleaned, standardized, reorganized in some parts and converted to a spreadsheet which makes the dataset much better suited for computations and analysis. The reorganization consists of two steps: step one was to remove text type information and extra information to a newly created column; and step two was to reorder the information in a set of records so that individual data entry is consistent with the column heading under which it should have been listed. The overall and monthly statistical summary of the data shows that interval and duration are both bimodal normally distributed, height is normally distributed and preplay display a Rayleigh type distribution. Comparison of the YNP and the electronic dataset was not feasible for all geysers and all variables; however, where it’s feasible such as the case for interval data, the two datasets are nearly identical.  相似文献

Spatial inequality characterizes the State-Religious school system in Israel visà-vis the other two systems servicing the Jewish population. The State-Religious school system caters to a smaller but equally dispersed population as the State schools, yet it is governed by the same legislation on school size and extent of catchment. The ultraorthodox school system is not governed by such legislation. This situation leads to a spatial competition which leads to conflicts on issues of school size and accessibility, aiming at enlarging the State-Religious system and improving its spatial conditions. Such conflicts are often politicized, reaching local and national levels of government.  相似文献

The Australian Geodynamics Cooperative Research Centre (AGCRC) website <http://www.agcrc. csiro.au/> provides the main integrated presentation of the results of AGCRC research. It hosts a systematic presentation of project summaries, publication abstracts, regionally organised geodynamic syntheses and a GIS database containing a large number of broad‐scale earth science datasets from the Australian region, which are presented through an interactive map viewer. Effective interfaces are required to make the variety of content accessible to users. In particular, maintaining effective hyperlinking for a large and growing set of pages was a significant challenge. We found that by developing effective indexing tools we were able to apply a uniform technology to attack these problems. The index included both the full text of the pages from the website and also specific index terms of metadata. The metadata schema was designed to support both generalised discovery through a search interface and also to allow hyperlinks to be included automatically in pages by the server, so that the user could browse in a richly cross‐linked framework. It was necessary to manage textual and numeric data within the same framework because even the textual documents were generally tied to geospatial locations identified by their geographical coordinates. This required extensions to standard index and search tools, including the development of complete new indexing software. To assist the user in accessing the index, we provided a variety of user interfaces specialised for different themes in the website. For example, publication lists are generated in a conventional layout, and geospatial datasets are presented through an interactive map viewer and query system. The latter also demonstrated how visualisation tools for geospatial data can be provided in the web‐browser interface.  相似文献

The skill and efficiency of a numerical model mostly varies with the quality of initial values, accuracy on parameterization of physical processes and horizontal and vertical resolution of the model. Commonly used low-resolution reanalyses are hardly able to capture the prominent features associated with organized convective processes in a monsoon depression. The objective is to prepare improved high-resolution analysis by the use of MM5 modelling system developed by the Pennsylvania State University/National Center for Atmospheric Research (PSU/NCAR). It requires the objective comparison of high and low-resolution analysis datasets in assessing the specific convective features of a monsoon depression. For this purpose, reanalysis datasets of NCAR/NCEP (National Center for Atmospheric Research/National Centers for Environmental Prediction) at a horizontal resolution of 2.5‡ (latitude/longitude) have been used as first guess in the objective analysis scheme. The additional asynoptic datasets obtained during BOBMEX-99 are utilized within the assimilation process. Cloud Motion Wind (CMW) data of METEOSAT satellite and SSM/I surface wind data are included for the improvement of derived analysis. The multiquadric (MQD) interpolation technique is selected and applied for meteorological objective analysis at a horizontal resolution of 30 km. After a successful inclusion of additional data, the resulting reanalysis is able to produce the structure of convective organization as well as prominent synoptic features associated with monsoon depression. Comparison and error verifications have been done with the help of available upper-air station data. The objective verification reveals the efficiency of the analysis scheme.  相似文献

In Sahel-Doukkala, which is characterized by lands of a relatively low relief, global DEMs and DEMs generated from digitizing topographic maps, have been the primary source of several multidisciplinary researches. Although these products present a great value of the conducted research, the level of the given accuracy is not sufficient enough for detailed geospatial analysis. These requirements led us to generate a high-resolution DEM as an alternative of available global DEMs or/and DEMs generated from digitizing topographic maps. In this study, we present a workflow to extract high-resolution DEM at 5 m resolution and derived orthoimages from ALOS-PRISM data over Sahel-Doukkala, through photogrammetric techniques, using a variation of GCPs obtained from topographic maps at scale 1:25,000. The accuracy of the generated products is reported according to NSSDA standards. Using ten GCPs, a PRISM-DEM with 3.88 m vertical accuracy and 11.60 m horizontal accuracy, both at 95% confidence level is obtained. This DEM will serve as base dataset for further detailed geospatial analysis and mapping applications in order to identify the relationship between surface parameters and groundwater, and also to assess and understand all factors influencing the development of karst landscapes and consequently subsurface stability in the investigated area.  相似文献

In many parts of the world sedimentary horizons with potential for hydrocarbon are located below flood basalt provinces. However, the presence of high velocity basaltic overburden makes delineation of sediments difficult due to the low velocity layer problem. Electrical and electromagnetic methods have been used in such scenarios because of the good electrical conductivity contrast between basalts and underlying sediments. However, mapping of the target sediments becomes difficult when the layer is thin as the data errors due to inherent noise lead to equivalent solutions. To tackle such difficult situations, a joint inversion scheme incorporating seismic reflection and refraction, magnetotelluric and deep electrical resistivity datasets is presented. Efficacy of the scheme is tested for a model comprising a thin sedimentary layer sandwiched between a thick basalt cover and a granitic basement. The results indicate that the parameters of the target sedimentary layer are either poorly resolved or equivalent solutions are obtained by the inversion of individual datasets. Joint inversions of seismic reflection (RFLS) and refraction (RFRS), or DC and MT dataset pairs provide improved results and the range of equivalent solutions is narrowed down. Combination of any three of the above datasets leads to further narrowing of this range and improvements in mean model estimates. Joint inversion incorporating all the datasets is found to yield good estimates of the structure. Resolution analysis is carried out to appraise estimates of various model parameters obtained by jointly inverting different combinations of datasets.  相似文献

降水产品为理解降水时空分布提供了新的视角,然而其在不同地区适用性差异很大,目前对不同降水产品在西北内陆河流域上游山区和中下游平原适用性的对比研究还十分有限。利用疏勒河流域及周边9个国家气象站2001-2013年和4个山区自建气象站2008-2013年降水观测数据,基于皮尔逊相关系数(R)、均方根误差(RMSE)、平均绝对误差(MAE)和相对偏差(BIAS)指标,对CMFD、ERA-Interim、GPCC、GPCP V2.3和JRA-55共五种常用降水产品的月尺度降水数据在疏勒河上游山区和中下游平原区的适用性进行了评估对比,结果表明:五种降水产品都可以较好地模拟疏勒河流域多年平均降水的空间分布,总体来说,降水产品在上游的评估的相对误差优于中下游,但绝对误差比中下游大,这与上游降水远大于中下游有关。各产品在上游和中下游的精度排序结果一致,均为CMFD > GPCC > ERA-Interim > GPCP V2.3 > JRA-55。CMFD效果最佳可能与融合了中国更多的地面降水资料有关,其在自建站的效果也表现最佳。不同产品在疏勒河上游山区和中下游月尺度的降水评估中表现较好,但尚不能满足流域水文过程分析和模拟的需要。  相似文献

With the rise in the number of applications using geospatial data and the number of GIS applications, the number of people who come into contact with geospatial data is increasing, too. Despite many attempts to introduce standardized formats in this area, they are often ignored by software developers as well as the users themselves for various reasons. When creating or exporting geographical data, users choose the format with regard to the software they use, or for which the data are intended. Users then have to deal with conversion of data formats, and considering its use also the issue of their transformation to the appropriate spatial reference system. This work presents findings related to this issue, obtained from several years of operation of an online service for the conversion and transformation of geographical data which is heavily used by users from all over the world. It presents statistics of individual formats use and spatial reference systems of geospatial data use from the point of view of both input and output data. The results, besides other things, are shown in the form of a pie chart map in which various needs of users from a variety of countries can be seen. The results of this work can be used especially by developers of applications which use geospatial data; it will allow them to quickly understand current user needs.  相似文献

Ocean modellers use bathymetric datasets like ETOPO5 and ETOPO2 to represent the ocean bottom topography. The former dataset is based on digitization of depth contours greater than 200 m, and the latter is based on satellite altimetry. Hence, they are not always reliable in shallow regions. An improved shelf bathymetry for the Indian Ocean region (20°E to 112°E and 38°S to 32°N) is derived by digitizing the depth contours and sounding depths less than 200 m from the hydrographic charts published by the National Hydrographic Office, India. The digitized data are then gridded and used to modify the existing ETOPO5 and ETOPO2 datasets for depths less than 200 m. In combining the digitized data with the original ETOPO dataset, we apply an appropriate blending technique near the 200 m contour to ensure smooth merging of the datasets. Using the modified ETOPO5, we demonstrate that the original ETOPO5 is indeed inaccurate in depths of less than 200 m and has features that are not actually present on the ocean bottom. Though the present version of ETOPO2 (ETOPO2v2) is a better bathymetry compared to its earlier versions, there are still differences between the ETOPO2v2 and the modified ETOPO2. We assess the improvements of these bathymetric grids with the performance of existing models of tidal circulation and tsunami propagation.  相似文献

基于空间分辨率和精度更高的BLM海冰密集度数据集, 评估了两种时间跨度较长、 应用广泛的25 km分辨率海冰密集度遥感数据集——NSIDC数据集和SICCI数据集。两种数据集与BLM数据集的海冰面积变化趋势相同, 但均低于基于BLM数据集得到的海冰面积, 其中基于SICCI数据集得到的海冰面积更接近BLM数据集。相比于NSIDC数据集, SICCI数据集的年、 月平均和日海冰面积偏差分别低81.88%、 80.90%、 81.44%, 且其海冰密集度平均偏差为-3.28%, 低于NSIDC数据的4.36%, 因此在进行北极地区整体海冰面积及海冰密集度分析时应选用SICCI数据集。按纬度、 海冰密集度值分情况对两种数据进行比较, 发现NSIDC数据集对开阔水域和浮冰区的区分效果较差, 其在低纬度和低密集度区域的平均偏差分别为10.11%和13.13%, 而SICCI数据集的平均偏差达到0.05%和0.44%, 是研究低纬度和中低海冰密集度区域的首选数据。与之相对, NSIDC数据集对中高纬度高海冰密集区域, 特别是近北极点区域的反映能力优于SICCI数据集, 平均偏差为1.08%, 均方根偏差为7.76%, 因此进行中高纬度高海冰密集度区域分析时首选NSIDC数据集。对两类数据集在北极东北航道上的分段评估结果发现, 低纬度海冰边缘地带或中低海冰密集度区域占比较高的航段区, SICCI数据集更接近BLM数据集, 这些航段应使用SICCI数据集进行分析; 而在中高纬度高海冰密集度区域占比较高的航段区, NSIDC数据集更加贴合, 应为首选数据集。  相似文献

以美国、加拿大、澳大利亚等国家地质调查局建立的地学空间数据库为基础,阐述了建立地学空间数据模型的重要意义。归纳了地学空间数据模型的设计原则,认为图层与属性表的实体关系、图层及属性表多少为佳是着重要解决的问题。通过对地学空间数据模型概念设计的深入研究,可以使地学空间数据模型设计人员正确地理解地学专家领域的问题,而逻辑设计则是地学空间数据模型的核心。地学逻辑数据模型研究的主要任务有图层的划分、属性表定义及关联、空间图形数据图层与属性数据的关联等。  相似文献

3D geological models are created to integrate a set of input measurements into a single geological model. There are many problems with this approach, as there is uncertainty in all stages of the modelling process, from initial data collection to the approach used in the modelling scheme itself to calculate the geological model. This study looks at the uncertainty inherent in geological models due to data density and introduces a novel method to upscale geological data that optimises the information in the initial dataset. This method also provides the ability for the dominant trend of a geological dataset to be determined at different scales. By using self-organizing maps (SOM's) to examine the different metrics used to quantify a geological model, we allow for a larger range of metrics to be used compared to traditional statistical methods, due to the SOM's ability to deal with incomplete datasets. The classification of the models into clusters based on the geological metrics using k-means clustering provides a useful insight into the models that are most similar and models that are statistical outliers. Our approach is guided and can be calculated on any input dataset of this type to determine the effect that data density will have on a resultant model. These models are all statistical derivations that represent simplifications and different scales of the initial dataset and can be used to interrogate the scale of observations.  相似文献

One important step in binary modeling of environmental problems is the generation of absence-datasets that are traditionally generated by random sampling and can undermine the quality of outputs.To solve this problem,this study develops the Absence Point Generation(APG)toolbox which is a Python-based ArcGIS toolbox for automated construction of absence-datasets for geospatial studies.The APG employs a frequency ratio analysis of four commonly used and important driving factors such as altitude,slope degree,topographic wetness index,and distance from rivers,and considers the presence locations buffer and density layers to define the low potential or susceptibility zones where absence-datasets are gener-ated.To test the APG toolbox,we applied two benchmark algorithms of random forest(RF)and boosted regression trees(BRT)in a case study to investigate groundwater potential using three absence datasets i.e.,the APG,random,and selection of absence samples(SAS)toolbox.The BRT-APG and RF-APG had the area under receiver operating curve(AUC)values of 0.947 and 0.942,while BRT and RF had weaker per-formances with the SAS and Random datasets.This effect resulted in AUC improvements for BRT and RF by 7.2,and 9.7%from the Random dataset,and AUC improvements for BRT and RF by 6.1,and 5.4%from the SAS dataset,respectively.The APG also impacted the importance of the input factors and the pattern of the groundwater potential maps,which proves the importance of absence points in environmental bin-ary issues.The proposed APG toolbox could be easily applied in other environmental hazards such as landslides,floods,and gully erosion,and land subsidence.  相似文献

为更加准确的摸清地质资料用户的需求,消除资料使用者与资料管理者之间的信息鸿沟,全国地质资料馆开展了数字地质资料馆主站访问日志的数据收集工作。数据集采用计算机自动记录的方法,将访问者的所在地、关键词、IP地址等信息进行完整记录。为了更好的利用这些数据,采用了规范的数据处理方法和质量控制体系。数据集提供了2014—2017年数字地质资料馆主站的访问记录,有效地反映了访问者在进行地质资料获取过程中的行为习惯,可为日后地质资料网站建设、地质资料开发利用、地质资料的管理与服务提供依据。  相似文献

High-resolution population distribution data are critical for successfully addressing important issues ranging from socio-environmental research to public health to homeland security, since scientific analyses, operational activities, and policy decisions are significantly influenced by the number of impacted people. Dasymetric modeling has been a well-recognized approach for spatial decomposition of census data to increase the spatial resolution of population distribution. However, enhancing the temporal resolution of population distribution poses a greater challenge. In this paper, we discuss the development of LandScan USA, a multi-dimensional dasymetric modeling approach, which has allowed the creation of a very high-resolution population distribution data both over space and time. At a spatial resolution of 3 arc seconds (~90 m), the initial LandScan USA database contains both a nighttime residential as well as a baseline daytime population distribution that incorporates movement of workers and students. Challenging research issues of disparate and misaligned spatial data and modeling to develop a database at a national scale, as well as model verification and validation approaches are illustrated and discussed. Initial analyses indicate a high degree of locational accuracy for LandScan USA distribution model and data. High-resolution population data such as LandScan USA, which describes both distribution and dynamics of human population, clearly has the potential to profoundly impact multiple domain applications of national and global priority.  相似文献
