On 13 August 1970, a sounding rocket carrying a high voltage electron accelerator and several electron detectors was launched from Wallops Island, Virginia. 16 msec long, 70 mA pulses were injected into the magnetosphere at pitch angles near 90°. In each pulse the electron energy was modulated between 35 and 43 keV. The electrons were trapped in the Earth's magnetic field and bounced between the northern and southern conjugate points with a period of ~0.65 sec and drifted eastward with a gradient-curvature drift velocity of ~765 m/sec. For about 90 seconds the rocket intercepted the returning echoes. Careful study of the rocket trajectory has allowed a partial space-time picture of an echo to be constructed. The bounce time and drift velocity observations are consistent with predictions based on internal magnetic field models with no electric fields. The flux has the spatial variations predicted by atmospheric scattering models at the southern conjugate point but is about a factor of 10 too low. After some injections delayed echoes are observed, apparently 40 keV electrons whose bounce time has been increased by ~75 msec, but with no change in their bounce averaged drift velocity. Study of detector response during gun pulses revealed three unexplained features: (1) a field aligned upward moving flux after downward injections; (2) a downward moving, time dependent, flux after injections at some upward pitch angles; (3) a lack of altitude (or atmospheric density) dependence on observed count rates.  相似文献

Electron intensities at 5 keV >18 keV and >45 keV, were measured on a Petrel rocket flown from Kiruna, Sweden, into a non-uniform glow aurora during the recovery phase of a magnetic bay. The intensities depend on pitch-angle in a way that is consistent with the precipitation being caused by pitch-angle diffusion from reservoirs of geomagnetically-trapped electrons. The scattering process that causes pitch-angle diffusion, and leads to three regions of relatively high intensity, appears to have properties different from the scattering process that leads to two intervening regions of low intensity. A spatial structure in electron reservoir intensity, is attributed mainly to variations in the rate of erosion by pitch-angle diffusion of an initially nearly-uniform reservoir intensity. An expression is derived for the minimum lifetime of trapped electrons undergoing strong pitch-angle diffusion.  相似文献

Low energy precipitated electrons have been measured with high time resolution through an auroral display by a series of high geometrical factor particle counters on a ‘mother-daughter’ sounding rocket, launched during wintertime near 2100 LT from Andenes, Norway. The observations show that the 0·5–3 keV electron fluxes are anisotropically distributed, with a maximum in a direction parallel to the local geomagnetic field vector at all latitudes covered by the rocket, except within the visual auroral forms where the pitch-angle distributions are isotropic or slightly peaked in a direction normal to the geomagnetic field. The 1 and 3 keV electron fluxes are weakly anticorrelated in the vicinity of the arcs, where also the 3 keV electron flux displays a more structured variation than the 0.5 and 1 keV electron fluxes.  相似文献

Height profiles of auroral emissions at 3914 Å, 4861 Å, and 5577 Å were obtained in two rocket flights through medium intensity stable aurora. The 3914 Å N2+ integral intensity data were compared with intensity variations predicted by an auroral model for a range of primary electron energy spectra. The observed profiles for the two flights were well reproduced respectively by a 5.6 keV mono-energtic flux and by a flux with an exponential spectrum cutting off around 12 to 15 keV. The data for 5577 Å (available only above 120 km) bear a constant ratio to that for 3914 Å. The emission profiles derived for 3914 Å, peak at 115 and 107 km respectively.  相似文献

On 9 December 1981 rocket borne energetic electron spectrometers measured energy spectra over a stable auroral arc. An associated microprocessor accurately timed the electron detection pulses to calculate auto-correlation functions for each of 16 energy levels between 300 eV and 19 keV.Energy spectra measured up to 230 km altitude contained a secondary peak around 5 keV, corresponding to the auroral beam. Derived velocity distribution functions contain a plateau or table extending round from 0 to 90° pitch angle with a weak positive gradient (+ ve d?(ν)/dν) near zero pitch angle. Autocorrelation functions made at energy levels corresponding to the location of the positive gradient showed the electrons of this region of phase space to be strongly modulated (~ 30%) at a frequency of 2.65 MHz or approximately at twice the electron gyrofrequency. This observation provides the most direct measurement of the auroral beam/ionospheric plasma interaction to date. It provides hard experimental evidence to support the theories which have previously predicted that a major wave-particle interaction responsible for the evolution of the auroral distribution function occurs at heights where the upper hybrid frequency equals twice the local electron gyrofrequency.  相似文献

Possible approaches are considered to the problem of resolving the observed dispersion in the radial velocities of objects of a given kind in the Galaxy into the system’s true dispersion and the contribution of random errors in heliocentric distances r. Of the methods that have been constructed, only the joint estimation of the true dispersion and the relative mean error in r can yield satisfactory results. This method is used for the subsystem of CO clouds with an observed dispersion of 8.7 ± 0.4 km/sec to obtain the true dispersion of 8.0 ± 0.6 km/sec and the mean error of 0m.25 ± 0m.085 in their distance moduli. The X-ray spectrum of the quiet Sun in the energy range 2.3–6.9 keV was observed from an Aerobee rocket using an uncollimated graphite crystal spectrometer. These results and spatial measurements made with an onboard modulation collimator are analyzed using solar models. Several methods of estimating coronal temperatures are used in the analysis and all yield results within the range (4±l) × l06K.  相似文献

During the flight of a Petrel rocket, instrumented by the SRC Radio and Space Research Station with Geiger counters and launched westwards from South Uist, Outer Hebrides, Scotland (L=3.38), a transient increase was observed in the intensity of energetic electrons having pitch angles between 60 and 120°. The increase, by a factor of 20 above the quasi-steady intensity observed throughout the remainder of the flight, occurred in 0.8 sec and was simultaneous for both >45 keV and >110 keV electrons. Recorded ~0.5 sec later, on the ground, was a two-hop whistler. During the enhanced electron intensity event, the entire duration of which was ~6 sec, the four-, six- and eight-hop whistlers were also received. From an analysis of the whistlers' spectrogram, it is concluded that the whistlers were ducted through the magnetosphere along the L=3.3 ±0.1 field line; the electron density in the equatorial plane is found to be 330 ±10 cm?3, a value characteristic of conditions within the plasmapause. It is suggested that these temporally and/or spatially associated phenomena, rather than arising by a chance coincidence, were the result of a gyroresonant interaction between energetic electrons and whistler mode waves moving in opposite directions. For gyroresonance on this field line at the equator, the parallel component of energy of the electrons is 25 keV at 3 kHz in the whistler band, or 100 keV at 1 kHz below it. It is suggested that a magnetospheric event occurred, causing both sudden enhanced electron precipitation and favourable conditions for the propagation and/or amplification of whistlers. A possible explanation is that energetic electrons, having a sufficiently anisotropic distribution function and associated with those injected during an earlier auroral substorm, become unstable via the transverse resonance instability when they drift into the plasmasphere, a region of high density thermal plasma.  相似文献

A sounding rocket was flown during the predawn on 17 January, 1976 from Uchinoura, Japan, to measure directly the behaviour of the conjugate photoelectrons at magnetically low latitudes. On board the rocket were an electron energy analyzer, 630 nm airglow photometer, and plasma probes to measure electron density and temperature. The incoming flux of the photoelectrons was measured in the altitude range between 210 and 340 km. The differential flux at the top of the atmosphere was determined to be F = (1.3 ± 0.4) × 1011exp[?E(eV)12] electron · m?2 · sr?1 · s?1 in the energy range 10 ? E ? 50 eV. The emission rate of the 630 nm airglow was observed in the altitude range between 90 and 360 km. The apparent emission rate observed at 80 km was 32 ± 5 R. From a theoretical calculation of the optical excitation rate using the observed electron flux data along with a model distribution of atomic oxygen, it was estimated that more than 65% of the emission could be produced by direct impact of the photoelectrons with atomic oxygen in the thermosphere between 200 and 360 km. Using the observed electron density and the model distribution of oxygen molecules the residual of the emission was ascribed to the excitation of O(1D) through dissociative recombination, O2++eO1 + O7. The direct collisional excitation by ambient electrons is estimated to be negligibly small at the level of observed electron temperature.  相似文献

Results from an ionoipheric founding rocket of the “mother-daugther” type, equipped with an 8 keV electron accelerator, is reported. The emphasis is on the results obtained from the three plasma probes which monitored both the electron- and the ion-population. It is shown that no significant increase of the electron density was observed during the beam injections. However, the electron temperature varied rapidly during these pulses. The influence of the vehicle charging on the measurements is also discussed.  相似文献

A rocket measurement of the X-ray cosmic diffuse background is presented. The data, that can be fitted to a power law 47E ?2.1±0.25 photons (cm2 s sr keV)?1, were obtained with detectors of different apertures. The result is compared to a previous rocket measurement where a screened detector had been used to evaluate the instrumental background. Results are in substantial agreement.  相似文献

Electron spectra obtained during the flight of Black Brant VB-31 on August 17, 1970 through a stable aurora to a height of 268 km have been analyzed in detail to obtain the pitch angle distributions from 25 to 155° and the electron energy distributions over an energy range of 18 keV to 20 eV through the region of atmospheric interaction down to 97 km. Backscatter ratios for 140° pitch angle range from 0.065 for 18 keV electrons to 0.22 for 1 keV electrons. Backscatter of lower energy electrons decreases with atmospheric depth below 200 km. The effect of the interactions between auroral electrons and the atmosphere is such as to give a peak in electron flux which moves progressively to higher energies with penetration depth. The secondary electron flux increases monotonically with height up to 200 km. The secondary electron spectrum can be approximated by an energy power over small energy ranges but its form is somewhat dependent on height and on the primary electron spectrum.  相似文献

Electron spectra measured on a rocket flight AMD-VB-34 through and over a series of auroral forms at Fort Churchill, Canada on 23 January 1974 show what can be described as inverted V events. Comparison with all-sky photographs identify clearly three of the events with three periods when the aurora was successively to the south of, underneath and to the north of the field line on which the rocket was located. In each of these events the electron spectrum changed from one resembling a Maxwellian of characteristic energy 3–4 keV on either side of the form to a nearly flat one out to 18 keV while the rocket was over the form. There was no indication of any spectral peaks in these spectra, which were confined to pitch angles of 70–90°. During descent the rocket moved slowly from over a quiet, fading arc to the equatorward side. Detailed electron observations show the spectrum returning to a Maxwellian distribution with steadily decreasing characteristic energy to 2 keV.  相似文献

Cosmos 359 rocket 1970-65D, was launched on 22 August 1970 into an orbit inclined at 51·2° to the Equator, with an initial perigee height of 209 km: it decayed on 6 October 1971 after a lifetime of 410 days. The orbit has been determined at 42 epochs during the lifetime, using the RAE orbit refinement program, PROP, with over 2600 observations. Observations from the Hewitt cameras at Malvern and Edinburgh were available for 10 of the 42 orbits.Ten values of density scale height, at heights between 185 and 261 km, have been determined from analysis of the variations in perigee height.Upper-atmosphere zonal winds and 15th-order harmonics in the geopotential have been evaluated from the changes in orbital inclination. The average atmospheric rotation rate, for heights near 220 km, is found to be 1·04 rev/day; but there are striking departures from the average, with well-established values of 1·30, 0·75, 1·35 and 0·95 over four successive 75-day intervals. The changes in inclination at the 15th-order resonance in November 1970 give values of lumped 15th-order harmonics, which will provide equations for evaluating coefficients of order 15 and even degree (16,18,…) and also show that useful results on the geopotential can be obtained from satellites with perigee as low as 200 km.  相似文献

An auroral arc system excited by soft electrons was studied with a combination of in situ rocket measurements and optical tomographic techniques, using data from a photometer on a horizontal, spinning rocket and a line of three meridian scanning photometers. The ground-based scanner data at 4709, 5577, 8446 and 6300 Å were successfully inverted to provide a set of volume emission rate distributions in the plane of the rocket trajectory, with a basic time resolution of 24 s. Volume emission rate profiles, derived from these distributions peaked at about 150 km for 5577 and 4709 Å, while the 8446 Å emission peaked at about 170 km with a more extended height distribution. The rocket photometer gave comparable volume emission rate distributions for the 3914 Å emission as reported in a separate paper by McDade et al. (1991, Planet. Space Sci. 39, 895). Instruments on the rocket measured the primary electron flux during the flight and, in particular, the flux precipitating into the auroral arc overflown at apogee (McEwen et al., 1991; in preparation). The local electron density and temperature were measured by probes on the rocket (Margot and McNamara (1991; Can. J. Phys. 69, 950). The electron density measurements on the downleg were modelled using ion production rate data derived from the optical results. Model calculations of the emission height profile based on the measured electron flux agree with the observed profiles. The height distribution of the N2+ emission in the equatorward band, through which the rocket passed during the descent, was measured by both the rocket and the ground-based tomographic techniques and the results are in good agreement. Comparison of these profiles with model profiles indicates that the exciting primary spectrum may be represented by an accelerated Maxwellian or a Gaussian distribution centered at about 3 keV. This distribution is close to what would be obtained if the electron flux exciting the poleward form were accelerated by a 1–2 kV upward potential drop. The relative height profiles for the volume emission rate of the 5577 Å OI emission and the 4709 Å N2+ emission were almost indistinguishable from each other for both the forms measured, with ratios in the range 38–50; this is equivalent to I(5577)/I(4278) ratios of 8–10. The auroral intensities and intensity ratios measured in the magnetic zenith from the ground during the period before and during the rocket flight are consistent with the primary electron fluxes and height distributions measured from the rocket. Values of I(5577)/I(4278) in the range 8–10 were also measured directly by the zenith ground photometers over which the arc system passed. These values are slightly higher than those reported by Gattinger and Vallance-Jones (1972) and this may possibly indicate an enhancement of the atomic oxygen concentration at the time of the flight. Such an enhancement would be consistent with our result, that the observed values of I(5577) and I(8446) are also significantly higher than those modelled on the basis of the electron flux spectrum measured at apogee.  相似文献

Rocket-borne double probes for electric field measurements can be intermittently operated in special, diagnostic modes involving current bias and low-impedance shunts to obtain information on the properties of the ambient ionospheric plasma along the flight path. Several such modes, and the information that they can provide, are analyzed. For example, in a low-impedance mode with asymmetric bias, the attenuation ratio (i.e. signal amplitude in this mode over the signal amplitude in the electric-field measuring mode) is in a simple way related to the electron temperature of the ambient plasma. The special surface coatings (Aquadag or vitreous carbon) normally used for electric field probes provide very homogeneous surface properties, a feature which also contributes to the reliability of the electron temperature measurements. In addition to electron temperature, the modes analyzed can be used to measure electron density and to give some information on ion temperature. The data from four rocket flights from ESRANGE are discussed in the light of these results. Electron temperature was measured in three of these flights. In all cases the temperature profile is in good agreement with theoretically predicted profiles based on the CIRA 1965 reference atmosphere and the solar illumination prevailing during the respective flights (twilight). Electron density profiles obtained by means of the double probe are in good agreement with the density measured by the Langmuir probe in the two flights for which both kinds of data are available. They are also in agreement with the electron density data available from ionosondes. Finally, pulses occurring when one of the probes passed through the rocket's shadow, are used to determine the photoelectron yield of the probe coatings (Aquadag or vitreous carbon). The values obtained, (7 ± 3) × 10?6 A/m2 for Aquadag and (4 ± 2) × 10?6 A/m2 for vitreous carbon are in good agreement with expectations based on laboratory data and solar Lyman α radiation.  相似文献

A method is proposed for constructing a map of the electron density distribution in the galactic plane. Data on the dispersion measures DM of more than 1500 pulsars and their distances, found by an independent method, are used. The independent distances of the pulsars are estimated using an empirical relation of the form LP α β W δ between the radio luminosity L of the pulsars and their periods P, the rate of change . of their periods, and the half width W of their pulses. A map of the electron density distribution in the galactic plane within a ±400 pc layer is provided. __________ Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 49, No. 2, pp. 277–287 (May 2006).  相似文献

We present Very Large Array observations at wavelengths of 2, 3.5, 6, and 20 cm, of angular broadening of radio sources due to the solar wind in the region 2–16 solar radii. Angular broadening is anisotropic with axial ratios in the range 2–16. Larger axial ratios are observed preferentially at smaller solar distances. Assuming that anisotropy is due to scattering blobs elongated along magnetic field lines, the distribution of position angles of the elliptically broadened images indicates that the field lines are non-radial even at the largest heliocentric distances observed here. At 5R⊙, the major axis scattering angle is ∼ 0.7" atλ= 6 cm and it varies with heliocentric distance asR -1.6. The level of turbulence, characterized by the wave structure function at a scale of 10 km along the major axis, normalized toλ = 20 cm, has a value 20 ± 7 at 5R⊙and varies with heliocentric distance asR -3. Comparison with earlier resu lts suggest that the level of turbulence is higher during solar maximum. Assuming a power-law spectrum of electron density fluctuations, the fitted spectral exponents have values in the range 2.8–3.4 for scale sizes between 2–35 km. The data suggests temporal fluctuations (of up to 10%) in the spectral exponent on a time scale of a few tens of minutes. The observed structure functions at different solar distances do not show any evidence for an inner scale; the upper limits are l k m at 2R⊙ and 4 km at 13R⊙. These upper limits are in conflict with earlier determinations and may suggest a reduced inner scale during solar maximum.  相似文献

COSMOS 1009 rocket was launched on 19 May 1978 into an orbit with initial perigee height 150 km and apogee 1100 km: its lifetime was only 17 days. The orbit has been determined daily during the final 14 days of its life, using the RAE orbit refinement program PROP6,with about 1100 observations supplied by NORAD. An average accuracy of about 60 m, radial and cross-track, was achieved. The orbits were analysed to reveal three features of the upper atmosphere at heights between 125 and 175 km. From the decrease in perigee height, five values of density scale height, accurate to ±4%, were obtained. The first three were within 10% of those from CIRA 1972; the fourth, after a magnetic storm, was higher than expected; the fifth gave evidence of the decrease in drag coefficient at heights below 130 km.Atmospheric oblateness produced a change of 4° in perigee position during the last four days of the life. Analysis showed that the ellipticity of the upper atmosphere was approximately equal to that of the Earth, f, for the first two of the four days, and about 12f in the last two.The orbital inclination decreased during the 14 days by about 50 times its standard deviation, and the observed variation was analysed to determine zonal winds at heights of 150–160 km at latitudes near 47° north. The zonal wind was very weak (0±30 m/s) for 23–28 May at local times near 03h; and 90±30 m/s east-to-west for 29 May to 4 June at local times near 01 h.  相似文献
