AbstractSuspended sediment and bedload discharges in sand-bed rivers shape semi-arid landscapes and impact sediment delivery from these landscapes, but are still incompletely understood. Suspended sediment and bedload fluxes of the intermittent Exu River, Brazil, were sampled by direct measurements. The highest suspended sediment concentration observed was 4847.4 mg L-1 and this value was possibly associated with the entrainment of sediment that was deposited in the preceding year. The bedload flux was well related to the stream power and the river efficiently transported all available bedload with a mean rate of 0.0047 kg m-1 s-1, and the percentage of bedload to suspended sediment varied between 4 and 12.72. The bed sediment of Exu River was prone to entrainment and showed a proclivity for transport. Thus, sand-bed and gravel-bed rivers of arid environments seem to exhibit the same mobility in the absence of armour layer.Editor D. Koutsoyiannis; Associate editor B. The Borborema Province is the western part of a major Brasiliano belt that extends from Brazil through NW Africa in pre-drift reconstructions. This province resulted from convergence and collision among the West African, Congo-São Francisco, and Amazonian cratons about 600 Ma. This study focuses on the Pernambuco–Alagoas (PEAL) domain, which is a complex of magmatic, migmatitic, and metamorphic rocks, located in the southern part of the Borborema Province. U–Pb geochronology and Sm–Nd data for metasedimentary sequences (Rio Una, Inhapi) of the PEAL domain and a sample from a sequence of the Transversal Zone domain suggest that their deposition occurred during a Cryogenian extensional event, within the interval 850–631 Ma (or slightly younger). This extensional event occurred in the PEAL, Transversal Zone, and Sergipano domains before the onset of the Brasiliano collision and was followed by syn- and post-collisional magmatism. The Rio Una sequence and the sequence from Transversal Zone domain were deposited over a Rhyacian (ca. 2.0–2.2) basement having a juvenile Palaeoproterozoic Nd signature, whereas the Inhapi sequence was deposited over an Early Neoproterozoic (Tonian) basement. The deposition of the studied sequences is coeval with metasedimentary sequences to the north and south in other domains of the Borborema Province. However, differences in Nd isotopic signatures between the sequences from PEAL, Transversal Zone, and Sergipano domains suggest that they were formed in distinct basins. Metasedimentary sequences from the PEAL domain have Meso- and Palaeoproterozoic T DM model ages. These data suggest that the orogens where the metasedimentary sequences are located have a strong ensialic component. T DM model ages of ca. 1.0 Ga and εNd (0.6 Ga) values around zero recorded in granites from the southern part of the PEAL, suggesting that juvenile material was accreted to the southern part of the PEAL domain crust during the Tonian. The migmatites from the PEAL domain have a wide range of T DM ages along with a wide range of εNd (0.6 Ga) values. The transition between the northern and southern parts of the PEAL domain denotes the approximate northern margin of a Late Mesoproterozoic to Early Neoproterozoic rift. 相似文献

ABSTRACTWe discuss the claim that the Amazon River has been subjected to a noticeable increase in suspended sediment transport (SST) in response to both climate and land-use changes. To study this, both satellite imagery and in situ data were compiled to produce a 32-year time series (1984–2016) of suspended sediment concentration. Both parametric and nonparametric statistics were applied to examine the SST time trend. The results indicate that there has been no statistically significant increase in SST in the last 32 years, independent of the statistical approach. The results indicate that, over the last 32 years at the Óbidos station, in Brazil, a recurring pattern of increase and decrease in SST has occurred, rather than a unidirectional systematic trend. This further explains the increasing trend reported in the literature and indicates that short time series are not recommended for time trend analyses due to the large inter-annual variability. 相似文献

It is not possible, using numerical methods, to model groundwater flow and transport in the fractured crystalline rock of northeastern Brazil. As an alternative, the usefulness of self-organizing map (SOM), k-means clustering, and Davies-Bouldin techniques to conceptualize the hydrogeology was evaluated. Also estimated was the well yield and groundwater quality across the Juá region. This process relies on relations in the underlying multivariate density function associated with a sparse local set of hydrogeologic (electrical conductivity, geology, temperature, and well yield) and a complete regional set of airborne geophysical (electromagnetic, magnetic, and radiometric) and satellite spectrometric measurements. Resampling of the regional well yield and electrical conductivity estimates provides sufficient resolution to construct variograms for stochastic modeling of the hydrogeologic variables. The combination of these stochastic maps provides a way to identify potential drilling targets for future groundwater development. The data-driven estimation approach, when applied to available airborne electromagnetic and water-well hydrogeologic measurements, provides a low-cost alternative to numerical groundwater flow modeling. In addition to fractured rock environments, the alternative modeling framework can provide spatial parameter estimates and associated variograms for constraints to improve the traditional calibration of equivalent groundwater-porous-media models. 相似文献

The global positioning system (GPS) is widely used for determining the three-dimensional position of points on earth surface. In the last few years, its use has also been increasingly employed for obtaining vertical geometric coordinates, which associated with the orthometrical altitude of the point can be employed in various civil engineering applications, as has been seen in diverse localities throughout the world. The satisfactory performance of this technology for obtaining excellent precision in vertical coordinates demands some conditions, related to the satellites, such as transmission of signals and, principally, in the case of urbanized areas, the presence of obstructions in the proximity of the equipment, which interferes with the quality and quantity of the information collected. GPS is an efficient technique for the detection of small movements, including the monitoring of soil subsidence. The present article describes adequate forms of the use of GPS in such a way as to guarantee good precision of the resulting vertical coordinates, even under unfavorable situations, such as in coastal areas, where the reference networks for monitoring are implanted in only one of the sides of the point?Cobject region, which makes the situation more difficult and requires careful planning so that the use of GPS reaches the desired precision. 相似文献

This paper evaluates the concentration of Polyaromatic hydrocarbons - PAHs in the Estuarine area of the Patos Lagoon, more precisely in a local named "Saco do Laranjal" in Pelotas City (southern Brazil). The samples were collected in May 2008. The concentrations of 16 US-EPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined by gas chromatography with a mass spectrometry detector (GC/MS). The sum of PAHs concentration ranged from 7.3 to 92.8μgkg(-1) in dry weight. The positive correlation (Pearson test) between the total organic material (TOM) and the total PAH concentration (0.98) suggests that TOM plays an important role in controlling the PAHs levels in the sediments. According to the observed ratios of individual PAHs, the contamination in the studied area is originated, predominantly pyrolytic sources. The values found are considered under normal levels and indicates a not impacted area. 相似文献

This work investigates the behavior of the sunspot number and Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) signal recorded in the tree ring time series for three different locations in Brazil: Humaitá in Amaz?nia State, Porto Ferreira in S?o Paulo State, and Passo Fundo in Rio Grande do Sul State, using wavelet and cross-wavelet analysis techniques. The wavelet spectra of tree ring time series showed signs of 11 and 22?years, possibly related to the solar activity, and periods of 2–8?years, possibly related to El Ni?o events. The cross-wavelet spectra for all tree ring time series from Brazil present a significant response to the 11-year solar cycle in the time interval between 1921 to after 1981. These tree ring time series still have a response to the second harmonic of the solar cycle (5.5?years), but in different time intervals. The cross-wavelet maps also showed that the relationship between the SOI x tree ring time series is more intense, for oscillation in the range of 4–8?years. 相似文献

Motivated by recent successful results of artificial neural network modelling in a variety of problems related to the geosciences, we have applied a radial basis functional link net to a regional-scale mapping of the potential for Cu-Au mineralizations in the Carajás Mineral Province, northern Brazil. To derive the input feature vectors, we have used geological and both radiometric and magnetic geophysical data. A k -fold cross-validation method was employed in order to tune the parameters of the network and to select the best radial basis functional link net model amongst several others. Subsets of the available data set were used for training and validation and the estimated overall accuracy of the selected model is 91.7%. The plotting of a cumulative area versus favourability curve allowed us to define favourability zones of occurrences of Cu-Au mineralizations and to assess the efficiency and the predictive power of the model. A binary map showing high and low favourability sectors was produced for the study area as an end product that can be used to guide and support more detailed exploration efforts. Our results show that 4.18% of the study area has an extremely high potential to contain Cu-Au mineralizations, especially those of iron-oxide Cu-Au type, which are related to volcanic rocks and hydrothermal alteration. 相似文献

The natural river water reference material SLRS‐6 (NRC‐CNRC) is the newest batch of a quality control material routinely used in many international environmental laboratories. This work presents a nine‐laboratory compilation of measurements of major and trace element concentrations and their related uncertainties, unavailable in the NRC‐CNRC certificate (B, Cs, Li, Ga, Ge, Hf, Nb, P, Rb, Rh, Re, S, Sc, Se, Si, Sn, Th, Ti, Tl, W, Y, Y, Zr and REEs). Measurements were mostly made using inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry. The results are compared with equivalent data for the last batch of the material, SLRS‐5, measured simultaneously with SLRS‐6 in this study. In general, very low concentrations, close to the quantification limits, were found in the new batch. The Sr isotopic ratio is also reported. 相似文献
