We present extensive photometry and spectroscopy of the extremely hydrogen-deficient star, LSS 3184, recently discovered to be a rapid variable (period ∼0.1066 d) strikingly similar to V652 Her. Over 95 h of photometry confirms the reported variability, which is of rather low amplitude (Δ V ∼0.03 mag), defines the light curve with greater precision and establishes a much more accurate ephemeris (period ∼0.106 578 4 d) to form a basis for detecting period change. Attention is drawn to the usefulness of a period-finding technique that fits harmonic components to the photometric observations. Spectroscopy shows a peak-to-peak variation in radial velocity of about 30 km s−1 , which, when combined with the photometric observations, confirms the pulsational nature of the variability and strongly indicates that the pulsations are radial in nature. 相似文献

The Tycho Epoch Photometry Annex A, a data base of photometry of more than 34 000 bright stars, has been searched for periodic variable stars with approximately sinusoidal light curves. Advantage was taken of special properties of the observing programme (photometry in two wavebands, availability of repeated measurements) to use simple but efficient variable selection criteria. The 218.4 ± 0.4, 228.8 ± 0.9 and 231.9 ± 0.7 Ma 40Ar/39Ar laser probe pseudo-plateau ages (2σ; 49–63% 39Ar-release) of very low-grade meta-pelitic whole-rocks from the Sakaigawa unit date high-P/T metamorphism. We argue that this
event occurred in a subduction–accretion complex, not along the East Asian continental margin, but on the Pacific side of
the proto-Japan superterrane. Proto-Japan was a Permian magmatic arc, presently dispersed in the Japanese islands, which also
contained older subduction–accretion complexes. The arc system was fringing but not yet part of the Eurasian continent. The
Middle to Late Triassic high-P/T tectono-metamorphic event was partly coeval with proto-Japan’s collision with proto-Eurasia
along the southward extension of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt, causing the main metamorphism in the Hida-Oki terrane. It
is possible that this system continued via the Cathaysia block (China) to Indochina. The Late Permian to Middle Triassic Indosinian
event might stem from docking of Pacific-derived terranes with Southeast Asia’s continental margin. The concept of the proto-Japan
superterrane implies that the Qinling-Dabie-Sulu suture zone joined the Central Asian Orogenic Belt to the east of the North

Abstract A fifth-order dispersion relation describing the local stability of a differentially rotating flow against small perturbations is derived. Finite viscosity and conductivity and both vertical (parallel to the rotation axis) and radial gradients in density, temperature and pressure are included. A general form is assumed for the equation of state, although this is not exploited in the paper. A number of special cases are studied: with negligible viscosity and conductivity, it is shown that modes can often be separated into two high frequency (modified acoustic), two intermediate frequency (combined inertial and internal waves) and a low frequency mode. In convectively unstable situations the intermediate frequency modes may be replaced by a damped/growing pair of instablities. Various criteria for mode excitation are given. It is shown that viscosity always inhibits instability at very short wavelengths, while non-zero conductivity may destabilize the flow. At intermediate wavelengths viscosity could also play a destabilizing role. A parameter study of the effects of fluctuations in the conductivity shows that it could cause mode excitation under certain circumstances. 相似文献

Performance of freshwater aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) systems in brackish or saline aquifers is negatively affected by lateral flow, density effects, and/or dispersive mixing, causing ambient groundwater to enter ASR wells during recovery. Two recently published ASR performance estimation methods are applied in a Dutch coastal area, characterized by brackish-to-saline groundwater and locally high lateral-flow velocities. ASR performance of existing systems in the study area show good agreement with the predicted performance using the two methods, provided that local vertical anisotropy ratios are limited (<3). Deviations between actual and predicted ASR performance may originate from simplifications in the conceptual model and uncertainties in the hydrogeological and hydrochemical input. As the estimation methods prove suitable to predict ASR performance, feasibility maps are generated for different scales of ASR to identify favorable ASR sites. Successful small-to-medium-scale ASR varies spatially in the study area, emphasizing the relevance of reliable a priori spatial mapping. 相似文献

One of the tools used to identify the pulsation modes of stars is a comparison of the amplitudes and phases as observed photometrically at different wavelengths. Proper application of the method requires that the errors on the measured quantities, and the correlations between them, be known (or at least estimated). It is assumed that contemporaneous measurements of the light intensity of a pulsating star are obtained in several wavebands. It is also assumed that the measurements are regularly spaced in time, although there may be missing observations. The amplitude and phase of the pulsation are estimated separately for each of the wavebands, and amplitude ratios and phase differences are calculated. A general scheme for estimating the covariance matrix of the amplitude ratios and phase differences is described. The first step is to fit a time series to the residuals after pre-whitening the observations by the best-fitting sinusoid. The residuals are then cross-correlated to study the interdependence between the errors in the different wavebands. Once the multivariate time-series structure can be modelled, the covariance matrix can be found by bootstrapping. An illustrative application is described in detail. 相似文献
