This study assesses the effect of decompression rate on two processes that directly influence the behavior of volcanic eruptions: degassing and permeability in magmas. We studied the degassing of magma with experiments on hydrated natural rhyolitic glass at high pressure and temperature. From the data collected, we defined and characterized one degassing regime in equilibrium and two regimes in disequilibrium. Equilibrium bubble growth occurs when the decompression rate is slower than 0.1 MPa s–1, while higher rates cause porosity to deviate rapidly from equilibrium, defining the first disequilibrium regime of degassing. If the deviation is large enough, a critical threshold of super-saturation is reached and bubble growth accelerates, defining the second disequilibrium regime. We studied permeability and bubble coalescence in magma with experiments using the same rhyolitic melt in open degassing conditions. Under these open conditions, we observed that bubbles start to coalesce at ~43 vol% porosity, regardless of decompression rate. Coalescence profoundly affects bubble texture and size distributions, and induces the melt to become permeable. We determined coalescence to occur on a time scale (~180 s) independent of decompression rate. We parameterized and incorporated our experimental results into a 1D conduit flow model to explore the implications of our findings on eruptive behavior of rhyolitic melts with low crystal contents stored in the upper crust. Compared to previous models that assume equilibrium degassing of the melt during ascent, the introduction of disequilibrium degassing reduces the deviation from lithostatic pressure by ~25%, the acceleration at high porosities (>50 vol%) by a factor 5, and the associated decompression rate by an order of magnitude. The integration of the time scale of coalescence to the model shows that the transition between explosive and effusive eruptive regimes is sensitive to small variations of the initial magma ascent speed, and that flow conditions near fragmentation may significantly be affected by bubble coalescence and gas escape.Editorial responsibility: D. A technique for simultaneously improving resolution and signal-to-noise ratio gain, the directivity improved estimation technique (DIET) combined with the advanced WISPR summation (AWSUM), or DIET AWSUM, is introduced. The DIET AWSUM method combines a straightforward deconvolution technique with the highly fluctuation-sensitive AWSUM filter. DIET AWSUM results generated for ocean acoustic data are compared with estimates produced using the maximum entropy method (MEM), a well-tested standard. The DIET AWSUM method achieved superior results in both increased resolution and improved gain for stable signal identification chiefly because of its greater ability to discriminate between stable signals and fluctuating signals and noise  相似文献

A workflow is described to estimate specific storage (S s) and hydraulic conductivity (K) from a profile of vibrating wire piezometers embedded into a regional aquitard in Australia. The loading efficiency, compressibility and S s were estimated from pore pressure response to atmospheric pressure changes, and K was estimated from the earliest part of the measurement record following grouting. Results indicate that S s and K were, respectively, 8.8?×?10?6 to 1.2?×?10?5 m?1 and 2?×?10?12 m s?1 for a claystone/siltstone, and 4.3?×?10?6 to 9.6?×?10?6 m?1 and 1?×?10?12 to 5?×?10?12 m s?1 for a thick mudstone. K estimates from the pore pressure response are within one order of magnitude when compared to direct measurement in a laboratory and inverse modelled flux rates determined from natural tracer profiles. Further analysis of the evolution and longevity of the properties of borehole grout (e.g. thermal and chemical effects) may help refine the estimation of formation hydraulic properties using this workflow. However, the convergence of K values illustrates the benefit of multiple lines of evidence to support aquitard characterization. An additional benefit of in situ pore pressure measurement is the generation of long-term data to constrain groundwater flow models, which provides a link between laboratory scale data and the formation scale.  相似文献

Tag reporting rate is an important parameter required for estimating fishing and natural mortality in fished populations. It is an extremely difficult parameter to estimate and can vary both during the fishing season and between fishing years. Improving tag reporting rates has been identified as a cost‐effective way of improving precision in fishing and natural mortality estimates derived from tagging data. In this study we evaluated the use of passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags to improve tag reporting rates in a lobster (Jasus edwardsii) trap fishery. To minimise the risk of PIT tag ingestion by consumers, we tested insertion of the PIT tag into the base of the antennae, the base of the walking leg, and the base of the telson. The base of the antennae proved to be the best option for lobster health although impacts were observed at all tag insertion sites. We further developed and tested a hybrid tag that combined a conventional external T‐bar tag with a PIT tag embedded within the shaft. PIT tag scanners were positioned in bottlenecks in the capture process so that all lobsters retained on board the vessel were passed through a scanner. Thus, the tag reporting rate was expected to be 100% for the subsample of the fleet fitted with scanners when scanners were operational. Scanner malfunction was a major issue and further engineering solutions are required to ensure that scanners are reliable when working in harsh marine conditions such as on‐board fishing vessels. Advantages of the hybrid tag are: the ability to be detected by both automatic detectors and fishers; known tag‐induced mortality and tag loss rates from previous research; and PIT tagging without risk of human ingestion.  相似文献

Summary This paper argues that the study of crime and the fear of crime in rural areas reveals much about the geography of crime, policing and rural society. Drawing upon a crime and safety survey conducted with residents of a rural parish in Worcestershire it establishes a link between fear of crime and 'cultural threats' to residents' dominant constructions of rurality. It concludes by considering the 1998 Crime and Disorder Act and its implications for rural policing and society.  相似文献

Hydrothermal experiments combined with petrologic observations form the basis for a new two-stage model for the evolution of the pre-eruption Minoan magma chamber at Santorini, Greece. Ninety-nine percent of the erupted volume is two-pyroxene, rhyodacitic magma that had been stored at a temperature of ∼885 °C, based on magnetite-ilmenite and QUILF geothermometry. The rest of the volume is basaltic to andesitic magma, which occurs as <10 cm scoria clasts and as small inclusions in rhyodacite pumices. Petrologic observations show that these magmas mixed at different scales and at different times (i.e., multiple batches of mafic magma). Hydrothermal experiments were carried out on samples of rhyodacite and a mafic scoria in order to determine magma storage conditions and the mixing history of the two magmas. At 885 °C, the rhyodacite must have been stored at water-saturated pressures of ∼50 MPa, based on its phase assemblage, matrix-glass composition, and crystal content. However, glass inclusions inside rhyodacitic plagioclase phenocrysts contain more than 6 wt% H2O, indicating they formed at pressures >200 MPa. In addition, the composition of the plagioclase hosts (An56 ± 6) of the inclusions require temperatures of 825 ± 25 °C at pressures >200 MPa. This demonstrates that the Minoan rhyodacitic magma underwent a two-stage evolution, first crystallizing at ∼825C and >200 MPa, and then rinsing to a shallow ∼50 MPa storage region with a concomitant rise in temperature to ∼885 °C. We suggest that the episodic intrusion of mafic magmas provided the necessary heat and perhaps contributed to the ascent of the magma to shallow crustal depths where it reequilibrated before the cataclysmic eruption. Phase equilibria suggest that much of the heating of the rhyodacite occurred in the shallow storage region. Thermal budget calculations suggest that the rhyodacite magma could have been heated by intrusions of basalt rising at reasonable upwelling rates and injected into the storage zone over several hundred years. Preservation of amphibole in the mafic scoria indicate that injection of mafic magma continued up until days before the cataclysmic eruption, perhaps triggering the event.
