Fracture zones and their connectivity in geologic media are of great importance to ground water resources management as well as ground water contamination prevention and remediation. In this paper, we applied a recently developed hydraulic tomography (HT) technique and an analysis algorithm (sequential successive linear estimator) to synthetic fractured media. The application aims to explore the potential utility of the technique and the algorithm for characterizing fracture zone distribution and their connectivity. Results of this investigation showed that using HT with a limited number of wells, the fracture zone distribution and its connectivity (general pattern) can be mapped satisfactorily although estimated hydraulic property fields are smooth. As the number of wells and monitoring ports increases, the fracture zone distribution and connectivity become vivid and the estimated hydraulic properties approach true values. We hope that the success of this application may promote the development and application of the new generations of technology (i.e., hydraulic, tracer, pneumatic tomographic surveys) for mapping fractures and other features in geologic media.  相似文献

Under hypothetical and idealized conditions, the horizontal site amplification factor (HSAF) is defined as the ratio of the horizontal Fourier amplitude spectrum (FAS) at a point on the Earth's surface with respect to the horizontal FAS at the identical location but on the outcropping seismological bedrock. The HSAF reflects the profile of local sedimentary soils and weathered rock formations, indicating site effects. In most cases, such an idealized HSAF is difficult to measure directly. Thus, quantitatively estimating a HSAF value is a crucial task in strong-motion prediction over the last century. Fortunately, many strong-motion stations have been constructed throughout Japan, facilitating the characterization of HSAFs down to seismological bedrock at more than 1600 observational sites by the generalized inversion technique (GIT). First, this study reported the similarity distribution of the HSAF and the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio of earthquakes (HVSRE). Subsequently, we proposed a hybrid method from a novel aspect for estimating HSAF in terms of the observed similarity distribution and the vertical amplification correction function (VACF) proposed previously. Compared with the direct use of HVSRE for substituting HSAF, the hybrid method proposed herein demonstrated an improvement of greater than 30% in terms of the residuals between estimated HSAFs and those separated from observations.  相似文献

This paper evaluated the impacts of climate change mitigation technology options on CO2 emission reductions and the effects of model representations regarding renewable intermittency on the assessment of reduction by using a world energy systems model. First, different diffusion scenarios for carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS), nuclear power, and wind power and solar PV are selected from EMF27 scenarios to analyze their impacts on CO2 emission reductions. These technologies are important for reducing CO2 intensity of electricity, and the impacts of their diffusion levels on mitigation costs are significant, according to the analyses. Availability of CCS in particular, among the three kinds of technologies, has a large impact on the marginal CO2 abatement cost. In order to analyze effects of model representations regarding renewables intermittency, four different representations are assumed within the model. A simplistic model representation that does not take into consideration the intermittency of wind power and solar PV evaluates larger contributions of the energy sources than those evaluated by a model representation that takes intermittency into consideration. Appropriate consideration of renewables intermittency within global energy systems models will be important for realistic evaluations of climate change mitigation scenarios.  相似文献

We have conducted geochemical and mineralogical investigations of the rare earth and yttrium (REY)‐rich mud from the Minami‐Torishima area in the Pacific in order to clarify the concentration of REY and their host‐phase in the mud. X‐ray diffraction analysis shows that the mud is mainly composed of phillipsite, fluorapatite, quartz, albite, illite and montmorillonite. Whole‐rock CaO, P2O5 and total REY contents of the mud are positively correlated. Relative abundance of apatite is also positively correlated to P2O5 and total REY contents. These correlations suggest that apatite is the main host of the P2O5 and REY in the mud. We make in situ compositional analyses of constituent minerals in the REY mud. The results show that the apatite is abundant in REY (9300–32,000 ppm) and is characterized by a negative Ce anomaly and enrichment in heavy rare‐earth elements. This abundance and composition of REY of the mud is similar those of fish debris apatites. In contrast, phillipsite is less abundant in REY (60–170 ppm). Therefore we conclude that the main REY host phase of the mud is apatite.  相似文献

Evaporation from the forest floor (EFF) in a deciduous broadleaf forest was measured using microlysimeter and closed‐chamber systems. The microlysimeter was used at six points in the experimental basin, and measurements gave different EFF values at different points. This could be attributed to the local photoenvironment of each sampling point, rather than to litter conditions, if the spatial variation in air temperature (Ta) or vapour pressure deficit (VPD) at the forest floor was small within this basin. A detachable microlysimeter measured condensation in the litter layer during the night, indicating that the litter layer, as well as the mulch layer, played a role in preventing evaporation from the soil layer. The closed‐chamber system made it possible to continuously measure long‐term EFF. EFF was closely related to VPD; even during the night, when solar radiation was zero, EFF amounted to 14·0% of the daily EFF. The daily EFF was 0·20 ± 0·13 mm day?1 during the study period, with two seasonal peaks: in late spring (0·31 mm day?1 in April) and early fall (0·22 mm day?1 in September). The former peak has been reported from two deciduous forests in Japan and is strongly related to the solar radiation reaching the forest floor when the trees are dormant. We have developed a new general circulation model (GCM) for the venusian mesosphere and thermosphere (80-about 180 km). Our GCM simulations show that winds in the subsolar-to-antisolar direction (SS–AS) are predominant above about 90 km. A weak return flow of the SS–AS is seen below about 90 km. We performed GCM simulations imposing the planetary-scale waves (thermal tides, Rossby wave, and Kelvin wave) at the lower boundary. Although the diurnal and semidiurnal tides are damped below 95 km, the Rossby wave propagates up to around 130 km. However, the amplitude of the Rossby wave is too small (<1 m/s) to affect the general circulation. On the other hand, the Kelvin wave propagates up to about 130 km with a maximum zonal wind fluctuation of approximately 5.9 m/s on average. The amplitude of the Kelvin wave sometimes exceeds 10 m/s around the terminator. The Kelvin wave causes a temporal variation in the wind velocity at the altitude of the O2-1.27 μm nightglow emission (about 95 km). Using a newly developed 1-D nightglow model and the composition distribution calculated from our GCM, we investigated the impact of the Kelvin wave on the nightglow distribution. Our results suggest that the Kelvin wave would cause temporal variations in the nightglow emission in the 23:50–00:20 LT region with an intensity of 1.1–1.3 MR and a period of approximately 4 days.  相似文献

Euhedral dissakisites from Trimouns dolomite mine, France, is compositionally zoned. Back-scattered electron (BSE) images reveal that each of the described dissakisite crystals has three distinct compositional zones: normal zoned core (Mg-rich), oscillatory zoned middle (Ca–Al-rich) and homogeneous rim (Fe–ΣREE-rich). The latter zone with Fe2+ > Mg corresponds to allanite-(Ce). Dissakisite-(Ce) also displays pronounced zoning in Fe/Mg which may suggest that the temperature of crystallization continuously decreased from core to rim. Despite a systematic increase in Fe/Mg of the dissakisite with an allanite rim, there is no monotonic decrease in the REE zoning: the normal zoned core and homogeneous rim are rich in La, Ce and Pr, but the relatively REE-poor oscillatory zoned middle is relatively abundant in Y, Sm and Gd. Discontinuous variation in REE content of the dissakisite, with the allanite rim may indicate a localized change in either the relative concentration of various ligands or pH of the crystallizing fluid. Observations under the polarizing microscope confirm that the different zones have simultaneous extinction. These chemical and optical observations suggest that epitaxial crystallization of dissakisite, from Trimouns, passes through three formation stages. The ternary Fe2+–Mg2+–(Al + Fe)3+ diagram illustrates that in general dissakisite can be classified into two groups, (Al + Fe)3+-rich and an Mg-rich; dissakisite from Trimouns belongs to the former group. Chondrite-normalized REE patterns of dissakisites from Trimouns are similar to those of allanites formed by hydrothermal fluids. In conclusion, it is clear from the above two geochemical characteristics that dissakisites from Trimouns are of (Al + Fe)3+-type, and were derived from hydrothermal fluids.  相似文献
