We studied the characteristics of Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) associated with solar flares and Deca-Hectometric (DH) type
II radio bursts, based on source position during 23rd solar cycle (1997–2007). We classified these CME events into three groups
using solar flare locations as, (i) disk events (0–30∘); (ii) intermediate events (31–60∘) and (iii) limb events (61–90∘). Main results from this studies are, (i) the number of CMEs associated with solar flares and DH-type IIs decreases as the
source position approaches from disk to limb, (ii) most of the DH CMEs are halo (72%) in disk events and the number of occurrence
of halo CMEs decreases from disk to limb, (iii) the average width and speed of limb events (164∘ and 1447 km s−1) are higher than those of disk events (134∘ and 1035 km s−1) and intermediate events (146∘ and 1170 km s−1) and (iv) the average accelerations for disk, intermediate and limb events are −8.2 m s−2, −10.3 m s−2 and −4.5 m s−2 respectively. These analysis of CMEs properties show more dependency on longitude and it gives strong evidence for projection

Extreme wave events of 1000 and 1500 years (radiocarbon ages) have been recently reported in Mahabalipuram region, southeast
coast of India. Subsequently, we carried out extensive sedimenttological analysis in regions covering a total lateral coverage
of 12 km with a new archeological site as the central portion of the study area. Twelve trenches in shore normal profiles
exhibit landward thinning sequences as well as upward fining sequences confirming with the global signatures of extreme wave
events. The sediment size ranges from fine-to-medium and moderately well sorted-to-well sorted, and exhibit positive skewness
with platykurtic-to-leptokurtic nature. We now propose the abrupt winnowing or back and forth motion including unidirectional
transport of these deposited sediments, which results in positive skewness. Textural analyses derived from scanning electron
microscope studies (SEM) demonstrate the alteration produced, in the ilmenite mineral with vivid presence of pits and crescents
with deformation observed on the surface due to extreme wave activities. This is further confirmed with the predominance of
high-density mineral such as magnetite (5.2) and other heavy minerals in these deposits inferred the high-intensity of the

In this paper, we address the question of energy leakage from turbulence to internal waves (IWs) in the oceanic mixed layer
(OML). If this leakage is substantial, then not only does this have profound implications as far as the dynamics of the OML
is concerned, but it also means that the equation for the turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) used in OML models must include
an appropriate sink term, and traditional models must be modified accordingly. Through comparison with the experimental data
on grid-generated turbulence in a stably stratified fluid, we show that a conventional two-equation turbulence model without
any IW sink term can explain these observations quite well, provided that the fluctuating motions that persist long after
the decay of grid-generated turbulence are interpreted as being due to IW motions generated by the initial passage of the
grid through the stably stratified fluid and not during turbulence decay. We conclude that there is no need to postulate an
IW sink term in the TKE equation, and conventional models suffice to model mixing in the OML. 相似文献

LandScan USA: a high-resolution geospatial and temporal modeling approach for population distribution and dynamics 总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
High-resolution population distribution data are critical for successfully addressing important issues ranging from socio-environmental research to public health to homeland security, since scientific analyses, operational activities, and policy decisions are significantly influenced by the number of impacted people. Dasymetric modeling has been a well-recognized approach for spatial decomposition of census data to increase the spatial resolution of population distribution. However, enhancing the temporal resolution of population distribution poses a greater challenge. In this paper, we discuss the development of LandScan USA, a multi-dimensional dasymetric modeling approach, which has allowed the creation of a very high-resolution population distribution data both over space and time. At a spatial resolution of 3 arc seconds (~90 m), the initial LandScan USA database contains both a nighttime residential as well as a baseline daytime population distribution that incorporates movement of workers and students. Challenging research issues of disparate and misaligned spatial data and modeling to develop a database at a national scale, as well as model verification and validation approaches are illustrated and discussed. Initial analyses indicate a high degree of locational accuracy for LandScan USA distribution model and data. High-resolution population data such as LandScan USA, which describes both distribution and dynamics of human population, clearly has the potential to profoundly impact multiple domain applications of national and global priority. 相似文献

Turbulent fluctuations in active mixed layers can excite internal waves in stably stratified fluid regions adjoining them. Expressions are derived for the energy and momentum fluxes radiated away by internal waves from an oceanic mixed layer, in terms of the spectrum of the static pressure fluctuations imposed at the base of the mixed layer by the turbulent eddies. The role of these internal wave fluxes in questions such as the determination of the rate of deepening of the layer due to an applied surface stress and the origin of internal waves in the deep ocean is discussed. 相似文献

A note on Stokes production of turbulence kinetic energy in the oceanic mixed layer: observations in the Baltic Sea 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Shear- and convection-driven turbulence coexists with wind-generated surface gravity waves in the upper ocean. The turbulent Reynolds stresses in the oceanic mixed layer can therefore interact with the shear of the wave-generated Stokes drift velocity to extract energy from the surface waves and inject it into turbulence, thus augmenting the mean shear-driven turbulence. Stokes production of turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) is difficult to measure in the field, since it requires simultaneous measurement of the turbulent stress and the Stokes drift profiles in the water column. However, it is readily inferred using second moment closure models of the oceanic mixed layer provided: (1) wave properties are available, along with the usual water mass properties, and radiative and air–sea fluxes needed to drive the mixed layer model and (2) the model skill can be assessed by comparing the model results against the observed dissipation rates of TKE. Comprehensive measurements made during the Reynolds 2002 campaign in the Baltic Sea have made the estimation of Stokes production possible, and in this paper, we report on the effort and the conclusions reached. Measurements of air–sea exchange parameters and water mass properties during the campaign allowed a mixed layer model to be run and the turbulent stress in the water column to be inferred. Simultaneous wave spectrum measurements enabled Stokes drift profile to be deduced and wave breaking to be included in the model run, and the Stokes production of TKE in the water column estimated. Direct measurements of the TKE dissipation rate from an upward traversing microstructure profiler were used to assure that the model could reproduce the turbulent dissipation rate in the water column. The model results indicate that the Stokes production of TKE in the mixed layer is of the same order of magnitude as the shear production and must therefore be included in mixed layer models. 相似文献

Sediment from twelve stations was sampled from the Tupilipalem Coast, southeast coast of India, and the presence of a set of heavy metals was established including iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd). The heavy metals were assessed by factor analysis, the results of which showed positive and/or negative correlations among Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, and Cd. Factor analysis also indicated that heavy metals in the sediments of the study area have different natural and anthropogenic sources. Similarly, a sediment pollution assessment was done using the Geoaccumulation Index (Igeo), Enrichment Factor (EF), and Pollution Load Index (PLI). The Geoaccumulation Index indicated that the surface sediment of the Tupilipalem Coast was extremely contaminated with Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn. The calculation of enrichment factors showed a significant enrichment with respect to Pb, Zn, and Cd and a moderate enrichment with Cr, Cu, and Ni. The falling trend of average contents’ enrichment factors is Cd> Pb> Zn> Cu> Cr> Ni> Mn> Fe. The PLI values of the Cd show higher (>1) values due to the influence of distinct external sources like agricultural runoff, industrial activities, and other anthropogenic inputs. Ninety two percent of heavy metals under study showed the highest concentrations at station TP-5 where the Buckingham Canal and other agricultural and aquacultural effluents connect with the Bay of Bengal. This location is the second inlet which is periodically closed and it seemed that these parts of the study area are heavily affected by anthropogenic pollution. 相似文献

Groundwater is a resilient water source and its importance is even greater in periods of drought. Areas such as the Mediterranean where adverse climate change effects are expected are bell‐weather locations for groundwater depletion and are of considerable interest. The present study evaluates renewable groundwater stress (RGS) as the ratio of groundwater use to groundwater availability, quantifying use as the trend in gravity recovery and climate experiment‐derived (GRACE) subsurface anomalies (ΔGWtrend) and renewable groundwater availability as mean annual recharge. Estimates for mean annual recharge for the various regions in Greece have been derived using numerical models. Our results highlight two RGS regimes in Greece (variable stress and unstressed) of the four characteristic stress regimes, that is, overstressed, variable stress, human‐dominated stress, and unstressed, defined as a function of the sign of use and the sign of groundwater availability (positive or negative). Variable stress areas are found in Central Greece (Thessaly region), where intensive agriculture results in negative ΔGWtrend values combined with positive mean annual recharge rates. RGS values range from ?0.05 to 0, indicating a low impact area. Within this region, adverse effects of groundwater overexploitation are already evident based on the negative GRACE anomalies; however, recharge is still positive, mitigating the effects of over‐pumping. The rest of Greek aquifers fall within the unstressed category, with RGS values from 0.02 to 0.05, indicating that the rate of use is less than the natural recharge rate. 相似文献
