Dust grains coagulate into larger aggregates in dense gas. This changes their size distribution and possibly affects the thermal evolution of star-forming clouds. We here investigate dust coagulation in collapsing pre-stellar cores with different metallicities by considering the thermal motions of grains. We show that coagulation does occur even at low metallicity  ∼10−6 Z  . However, we also find (i) that the H2 formation rate on dust grains is reduced only after the majority of H2 is formed and (ii) that the dust opacity is modified only after the core becomes optically thick. Therefore, we conclude that the effects of dust coagulation can safely be neglected in discussing the temperature evolution of the pre-stellar cores for any metallicity as long as the grain motions are thermal.  相似文献

When full 3-D modelling is too costly or cumbersome, computations of 3-D elastic wave propagation in laterally heterogeneous, multilayered 2-D geological structures may enhance considerably our ability to predict strong ground motion for seismological and engineering purposes. Towards this goal, we extend the method based on the combination of the thin-layer finite-element and boundary-element methods (TLFE-BEM) and calculate windowend f - k spectra of the 3-D wavefield. The windowed f - k spectra are spatially localized spectra from which the local properties of the wavefield can be extracted. The TLFE-BEM is particularly suited for calculating the complete wavefield where surface waves are dominant in multilayered media. The computations are performed in the frequency domain, providing the f - k spectra directly. From the results for the 3-D wavefield excited by a point source in a 2-D multilayered, sloped structure, it can be said that the phase velocity of the fundamental-mode Rayleigh wave in a laterally heterogeneous multilayered medium, estimated from the windowed f - k spectra, varies with the location of the point source. For the model calculated in this article, the phase velocity varies between the value for the flat layered structure of the thick-layer side and that for the structure just under the centre of the window. The exact subsurface structure just under the centre of an array in a laterally heterogeneous medium cannot be obtained if we use the f - k spectral analysis assuming a flat layered structure.  相似文献

We installed a real-time operating regional observation network of Ocean-Bottom-Seismometers, connected to an electro-optical fiber communication cable, at the Sagami trough subduction zone, just south of the Tokyo metropolitan area, central Japan. The network, called ETMC, has six seismic observation sites at approximately 20 km spacing. In addition, there are three tsunami observation sites along the ETMC network to monitor the propagation process of tsunamis around the Sagami trough region.The on-line data from the ETMC has been improving the detection capability of smaller-magnitude earthquakes even at areas close to the margin of the trough. The ETMC data analyzing system, which has a function of real-time digital filtering for each seismic channel, can read the arrival times of P- and S-waves precisely, constraining well the automatic on-line hypocenter locations. The network has been providing useful information regarding the bending and downgoing process of the Philippine sea plate at the Sagami trough subduction zone.The pressure sensors of the installed network have a detection capability of tsunami wave trains with an amplitude of less than 1 cm. For example, the sensors recorded the full time history of tsunami wave trains, with mm order resolution, originating from a tsunami earthquake with 5.7 MW and the tsunami magnitude of 7.5 occurred near Tori Shima (Tori Is.) of the Izu-Bonin Is. arc on September 4, 1996. The maximum amplitude of the tsunami signals on the trough-floor was approximately 1 cm (P-P), in contrast with approximately 20 cm (0-P) at a coastal site on Izu-Oshima, near the trough. Also, the pressure sensors observed tsunamis due to a large tsunami earthquake (7.1 MW) at the northern New Guinea, on July 17, 1998.  相似文献

Eight sets of coastal acoustic tomography (CAT) systems were deployed during November 29 to December 10, 2002 at the coasts on both sides of Tokyo Bay to measure tidal current structures at 15-rain interval.Sound transmission across the Tokyo Bay (between Yokohama and Chiba)was successfillly traced,even under severe interference from ship generated wakes and bubbles.Tidal current fields changing from northward to southward flow are well reconstructed by the inverse analysis of travel-time difference data for a period with the best sound transmission condition. It is suggested that the CAT is the most powerful tool to continuously map tidal current fields in the coastal seas with heavy shipping traffic and fisheries activity.  相似文献

The temporal variation of the partial pressure of carbon dioxide in surface seawater of Iyo Nada in the western Seto Inland Sea was measured by infrared absorption of carbon dioxide (CO2) in air equilibrated with seawater. The variation of from January to late May in 1994 was relatively small (from 270 to 340 atm). on the contrary, the measured in September 1993 ranged from 200 to 450 atm. It seems that the relative high observed in the north and the south of Iyo Nada in September were caused by destruction of a stratification owing to tidal currents at straits between Hiroshima Bay and Iyo Nada and Hayasui Straits, respectively. The low observed in the central Iyo Nada in September was ascribed to a tidal front where high concentrations of chlorophyll-a and a relation between and chlorophyll-a in negative sense were found. Except the observation in the north of Iyo Nada in September, the in the surface seawater of Iyo Nada were lowe than the atmospheric (about 367 atm). The results obtained by this work and Kimotoet al. (1993) lead to the conclusion that Iyo Nada acts as a sink of the atmospheric CO2 on the average.  相似文献

A simple law of wear rate is examined for the process of gouge generation during the frictional sliding of simulated faults in rocks, by use of the Pi theorem method (dimensional analysis) and existing experimental data. The relationship between wear rate (t/d) and the applied stress can be expressed by the power-law relations $$\frac{t}{d} = C_\sigma \sigma ^{m\sigma } ,\frac{t}{d} = C_\tau \tau ^{m\tau }$$ wheret is the thickness of the gouge generated on the frictional surfaces,d is the fault displacement, σ and τ are normal stress and shear stress, respectively, andC σ,C τ,m σ andm τ are constants. These results indicate that the exponent coefficientsm σ andm τ and the coefficientsC σ andC τ depend on the material hardness of the frictional surfaces. By using the wear rates of natural faults, these power-law relationships may prove to be an acceptable palaeopiezometer of natural faults and the lithosphere.  相似文献

The 2005 northern Pakistan earthquake (magnitude 7.6) of 8 October 2005 occurred in the northwestern part of the Himalayas. We interpreted landslides triggered by the earthquake using black-and-white 2.5-m-resolution System Pour l’Observation de la Terre 5 (SPOT 5) stereo images. As a result, the counts of 2,424 landslides were identified in the study area of 55 by 51 km. About 79% or 1,925 of the landslides were small (less than 0.5 ha in area), whereas 207 of the landslides (about 9%) were large (1 ha and more in area). Judging from our field survey, most of the small landslides are shallow rock falls and slides. However, the resolution and whitish image in the photos prevented interpreting the movement type and geomorphologic features of the landslide sites in detail. It is known that this earthquake took place along preexisting active reverse faults. The landslide distribution was mapped and superimposed on the crustal deformation detected by the environmental satellite/synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data, active faults map, geological map, and shuttle radar topography mission data. The landslide distribution showed the following characteristics: (1) Most of the landslides occurred on the hanging-wall side of the Balakot–Garhi fault; (2) greater than one third of the landslides occurred within 1 km from the active fault; (3) the greatest number of landslides (1,147 counts), landslide density (3.2 counts/km2), and landslide area ratio (2.3 ha/km2) was found within Miocene sandstone and siltstone, Precambrian schist and quartzite, and Eocene and Paleocene limestone and shale, respectively; (4) there was a slight trend that large landslides occurred on vertically convex slopes rather than on concave slopes; furthermore, large landslides occurred on steeper (30° and more) slopes than on gentler slopes; (5) many large landslides occurred on slopes facing S and SW directions, which is consistent with SAR-detected horizontal dominant direction of crustal deformation on the hanging wall.  相似文献

We demonstrate that the idea of symmetropy can be used for quantification of earthquake patterns. The symmetropy can be considered as a measure of asymmetry. A pattern is richer in asymmetry when the symmetropy is smaller. The specific results of its applications are obtained as follows. In a discrete model of a seismic source with self-organized criticality, the spatial patterns of earthquakes during critical states and sub-critical states are distinguished by the behaviour of the symmetropy: sub-critical patterns show that the symmetropy is approximately a constant but this has various values during critical states. The critical patterns show asymmetric property without any asymmetric force from the outside and without asymmetric intracellular rule. We show that the emergence of asymmetric patterns is a generic feature of dynamic ruptures in our model. Such a generic asymmetry results from the model which is an inherently discrete system consisting of finite-sized cells. These cells may represent geometrical disordered fault zones. We further discuss rotational motions that generate seismic rotational waves. In micromorphic continuum theory, such rotations are attributed to dynamic ruptures in disordered systems. We note that the concept of disorder in this theory is expressed by a set of finite-sized microstructures and is consistent with the concept of disorder modelled in the present study. Thus, we suggest that the spatially asymmetric patterns of earthquakes might be related to the rotational motions, because both come from dynamic ruptures in a discrete fault zone without a well-defined continuum limit.  相似文献
