When fugitive methane migrates upward along boreholes of oil and gas wells, it may migrate into shallow ground water or pass through overlying soil to the atmosphere. Prior to this study, there was little information on the fate of fugitive methane that migrates into ground water. In a field study near Lloydminster, Alberta, Canada, we found hydrogeochemical evidence that fugitive methane from an oil well migrated into a shallow aquifer but has been attenuated by dissimilatory bacterial sulfate reduction at low temperature ( approximately 5 degrees C) under anaerobic conditions. Evidence includes spatial and temporal trends in concentrations of methane and sulfate in ground water and associated trends in concentrations of bicarbonate and sulfide. Within 10 m of the oil well, sulfate concentrations were low, and sulfate was enriched in both 34S and 18O. Sulfate concentrations had a strong positive correlation with delta13C values of bicarbonate, and sulfide was depleted in 34S compared to sulfate. These data indicate that bacterial sulfate reduction occurred near the production well. Near the oil well, elevated concentrations of bicarbonate were observed, and the bicarbonate was depleted in 13C. Modeling indicates that the main source of this excess 13C-depleted bicarbonate is oxidized methane. In concert with the sulfate concentration and isotope data, these results support an interpretation that in situ bacterial oxidation of methane has occurred, linked to bacterial sulfate reduction. Diatom assemblages in surface sediments were sampled along three transects in Lake 239, from the Experimental Lakes Area (NW Ontario), and analyzed in order to explore the relationship between modern species distributions and water depth. Approximately 170 diatom species were identified in surficial sediments at lake depths from 2 to 30 m. The species composition varied with sample depth but remained highly similar across all three transects. The main patterns of variation in the diatom assemblages across transects, derived from a detrended correspondence analysis (DCA), showed that assemblages were highly correlated (r = 0.97 to 0.98). At depths > 8 m the pattern of predominantly benthic composition changed to a planktonic assemblage dominated by Cyclotella stelligera. This depth currently corresponds to the depth of 1% light penetration as assessed from extinction coefficient measurements. Diatom species diversity increases with the switch to the near-shore benthic taxa in all three transects. Additionally, there is a large decrease in the ratio of chrysophyte scales to diatoms at depths < 8 m. Light transmission data from wet and dry periods over the last 35 years suggests that during dry periods the extent of the littoral zone should change by over 2 m. We suggest that cores along a transect from 8 to 14 m should provide a highly sensitive location for detailed paleoclimatic study. 相似文献

To better understand the long-term climate history of Antarctica, we studied Lake Bonney in Taylor Valley, Southern Victoria Land (78°S). Helium isotope ratios and He, Ne, Ar and N2 concentration data, obtained from hydrocasts in the East (ELB) and West (WLB) Lobes of Lake Bonney, provided important constraints on the lakes Holocene evolution. Based on very low concentrations of Ar and N2 in the ELB bottom waters, ELB was free of ice until 200 ± 50 years ago. After which, low salinity water flowing over the sill from WLB to ELB, covered ELB and formed a perennial ice cover, inhibiting the exchange of gases with the atmosphere. In contrast to the ELB, the WLB retained an ice cover through the Holocene. The brine in the WLB bottom waters has meteoric N2 and Ar gas concentrations indicating that it has not been significantly modified by atmospheric exchange or ice formation. The helium concentrations in the deep water of WLB are the highest measured in non-thermal surface water. By fitting a diffusional loss to the 3He/4He, helium, and Cl profiles, we calculate a time of 3000 years for the initiation of flow over the sill separating the East and West Lobes. To supply this flux of helium to the lake, a helium-rich sediment beneath the lake must be providing the helium by diffusion. If at any time during the last million years the ice cover left WLB, there would be insufficient helium available to provide the current flux to WLB. The variations in water levels in Lake Bonney can be related to climatic events that have been documented within the Southern Victoria Land region and indicate that the lakes respond significantly to regional and, perhaps, global climate forcing. 相似文献

In 1989–1990 the SeaMARC II side-looking sonar and swath bathymetric system imaged more than 80 000 km2 of the seafloor in the Norwegian-Greenland Sea and southern Arctic Ocean. One of our main goals was to investigate the morphotectonic
evolution of the ultra-slow spreading Knipovich Ridge from its oblique (115° ) intersection with the Mohns Ridge in the south
to its boundary with the Molloy Transform Fault in the north, and to determine whether or not the ancient Spitsbergen Shear
Zone continued to play any involvement in the rise axis evolution and segmentation.
Structural evidence for ongoing northward rift propagation of the Mohns Ridge into the ancient Spitsbergen Shear Zone (forming
the Knipovich Ridge in the process) includes ancient deactivated and migrated transforms, subtle V-shaped-oriented flank faults
which have their apex at the present day Molloy Transform, and rift related faults that extend north of the present Molloy
Transform Fault. The Knipovich Ridge is segmented into distinct elongate basins; the bathymetric inverse of the very-slow
spreading Reykjanes Ridge to the south. Three major fault directions are detected: the N-S oriented rift walls, the highly
oblique en-echelon faults, which reside in the rift valley, and the structures, defining the orientation of many of the axial
highs, which are oblique to both the rift walls and the faults in the axial rift valley.
The segmentation of this slow spreading center is dominated by quasi stationary, focused magma centers creating (axial highs)
located between long oblique rift basins. Present day segment discontinuities on the Knipovich Ridge are aligned along highly
oblique, probably strike-slip faults, which could have been created in response to rotating shear couples within zones of
transtension across the multiple faults of the Spitsbergen Shear Zone. Fault interaction between major strike slip shears
may have lead to the formation of en-echelon pull apart basins. The curved stress trajectories create arcuate faults and subsiding
elongate basins while focusing most of the volcanism through the boundary faults. As a result, the Knipovich Ridge is characterized
by Underlapping magma centers, with long oblique rifts.
This style of basin-dominated segmentation probably evolved in a simple shear detachment fault environment which led to the
extreme morphotectonic and geophysical asymmetries across the rise axis. The influence of the Spitsbergen Shear Zone on the
evolution of the Knipovich Ridge is the primary reason that the segment discontinuities are predominantly volcanic.
Fault orientation data suggest that different extension directions along the Knipovich Ridge and Mohns Ridge (280° vs. 330°,
respectively) cause the crust on the western side of the intersection of these two ridges to buckle and uplift via compression
as is evidenced by the uplifted western wall province and the large 60 mGal free air gravity anomalies in this area.
In addition, the structural data suggest that the northwards propagation of the spreading center is ongoing and that a `normal'
pure shear spreading regime has not evolved along this ridge.

Eight metals, 21 organic priority pollutants, and 11 other contaminants and contaminant-related sediment characteristics were measured in surface sediments (upper 2 cm) at 21 locations in Commencement Bay and the Tacoma Waterways, Washington. Summary statistics were calculated and statistical approaches (analysis of variance, multiple comparisons tests, cluster analysis and principal component analysis) were applied to subsets of the data to classify sediment contamination. Overall sediment contamination was highest in the Sitcum, City and Hylebos Waterways, intermediate in Commencement Bay, at the entrances to the Tacoma Waterways and in the outer reaches of the Blair and Hylebos Waterways, and lowest at the Blair Waterway turning basin, the mouth of the Puyallup River and at a reference site near Browns Point. High concentrations of some contaminants appeared to be related to proximity to sources of contaminants. Depositional vectors, and chemical adsorption processes may also influence the spatial distribution of sediment contamination in the study area.Results of simple and partial correlation analyses indicate that arsenic, iron and manganese may be more closely associated with the clay fraction, while cadmium, copper and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons may be more closely associated with the total organic carbon content of sediments. We were unable to discriminate statistically between the affinity of chromium, lead, zinc and phthalates with the % clay or the total organic carbon content of sediments. 相似文献

In 1983 a combined SeaMARC I, Sea Beam swath mapping expedition traversed the East Pacific Rise from 13°20 N to 9°50 N, including most of the Clipperton Transform Fault at 10°15 N, and a chain of seamounts at 9°50 N which runs obliquely to both the ridge axis and transform fault trends. We collected temperature, salinity and magnetic data along the same track. These data, combined with Deep-Tow data and French hydrocasts, are used to construct a thermal section of the rise axis from 13°10 N to 8°20 N.Thermal data collected out to 25 km from the rise axis and along the Clipperton Transform Fault indicate that temperatures above the rise axis are uniformly warmer by 0.065°C than bottom water temperatures at equal depths off the axis. The rise axis thermal structure is punctuated by four distinct thermal fields with an average spacing of 155 km. All four of these fields are located on morphologic highs. Three fields are characterized by lenses of warmed water 20 km in length and 300 m thick. Additional clues to hydrothermal activity are provided in two cases by high concentrations of CH4, dissolved Mn and 3He in the water column and in another case by concentrations of benthic animals commonly associated with hydrothermal regions.We use three methods to estimate large-scale heat loss. Heat flow estimates range from 1250 MW to 5600 MW for one thermal field 25 km in length. Total convective heat loss for the four major fields is estimated to lie between 2100 MW and 9450 MW. If we add the amount of heat it takes to warm the rest of the rise axis (489 km in length) by 0.065.°C, then the calculated axial heat loss is from 12,275 to 38,525 MW (19–61% of the total heat theoretically emitted from crust between 0 and 1 m.y. in age). 相似文献

Recent data on the sources of organic carbon buried in the ocean have emphasized the probable importance of terrigenous organic matter in burial budgets of deltaic depocenters. The many markers used to assess relative importance of marine vs. terrestrial sources each have ambiguities. We use the ratio of bromine to organic carbon (Br:OC) as a source indicator for organic matter in the Mississippi delta. Progressive increases in bromine concentrations from the river to the slope indicate increasing content of marine-derived organic matter. Quantitative estimates of marine vs. terrigenous organic matter using Br:OC ratios in a two-endmember mixing model are consistent with recent estimates using a combination of three other source markers [Gordon, E.S., Goñi, M.A. 2003. Sources and distribution of terrigenous organic matter delivered by the Atchafalaya River to sediments in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta, 67:2359–2375]. The Br:OC vs. δ13C relationship indicates seaward increase in δ13C without proportionate incorporation of marine organic matter, consistent with recent arguments that isotopically depleted terrestrial detritus derived from C3 plants is separated from C4-derived terrigenous organic matter during transport. Decreasing Br:OC ratios downcore at many sites that have significant amounts of marine organic matter indicate that the marine organic matter is preferentially lost during burial diagenesis.
