A laser-driven experiment produces images of dense shocked material by x-ray transmission. The post-shock material is sufficiently dense that no significant signal passes through the dense layer, and therefore the shock compression cannot be directly measured by comparing transmitted intensities. One could try to determine the shock compression ratio by observing the ratio of the total distance travelled by the shock to the dense post-shock layer width, but small deviations of the angle of the shock with respect to the angle of imaging create large asymmetric errors in observation. A statistical approach to recovering shock compression by appropriately combining data from several experiments is developed, using fits to a simple model for the shock and shock tube geometry.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Reliable power supply, precise position determination and effective communication are the key requirements for strategic autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) involved in long duration scientific missions, search operations and when operated as a swarm. The paper presents the challenging range of AUV developed for deep water, Polar and intervention applications; demanding technical requirements for strategic AUV; reliability modeling done on the lithium-ion batteries to identify the redundancy requirements for achieving near-zero failures; navigation model to estimate the achievable level of position accuracies using the state-of-the-art navigation system; limitations in underwater communication; and their importance in realizing vehicle autonomy and swarm intelligence. It is identified that a strategic grade Doppler velocity- aided inertial navigation system could provide position accuracies of about 0.5% of the distance travelled when navigated using sea bottom or ice reference, and a 38?kWh lithium-ion battery pack requires about 7% redundant battery capacity to achieve a failure probability of <?1% in a period of 1 year.  相似文献

The Varushanad hills forms the eastern offshoot of the Western Ghats and the Cumbum valley divides the Varushnad hills from the Western Ghats. Investigations were carried out in about 1700 sq Km comprising the Cumbum valley and the Varushanad hills of the Western Ghats situated in Periakulam Srivalliputhur and Usilampatti taluks of Tamil Nadu on the geological and geomorphological aspects. Remote sensing techniques were used and limited field checks were made. Visual interpretation of aerial photographs on 1:60,000 scale was carried out for identifying the geomorphological features, drainage pattern and lithology. Digital analysis of the Landsat computer compatible tape (CCT) path-row 154–053 was also carried out to delineate major lithological variations. Major lineaments were also mapped from the Landsat imagery and false colour composite. The rock types of the Cumbum valley and the Varushanad hills are mainly charnockites, granite gneiss and pink granites which have been deformed by folds and faults. The various geomorphological units of the area are ridges, valleys, bazada zone and pediment zone of mountain complex. Resources evalution studies on the potential zone of ground water and possible construction materials were also discussed.  相似文献

HDO and D2O are thought to be present in significant quantities in the coldest regions of the Universe. Partition functions are calculated for these species and used to calculate temperature dependent equilibrium constants for the most important fractionation reactions involving water. HDO may also be a key indicator of the absence of deuterium burning in very low mass stars. The HDO partition function calculation is extended to high  ( T ≤ 6000 K)  temperatures for this purpose.  相似文献

In 1989–1990 the SeaMARC II side-looking sonar and swath bathymetric system imaged more than 80 000 km2 of the seafloor in the Norwegian-Greenland Sea and southern Arctic Ocean. One of our main goals was to investigate the morphotectonic evolution of the ultra-slow spreading Knipovich Ridge from its oblique (115° ) intersection with the Mohns Ridge in the south to its boundary with the Molloy Transform Fault in the north, and to determine whether or not the ancient Spitsbergen Shear Zone continued to play any involvement in the rise axis evolution and segmentation. Structural evidence for ongoing northward rift propagation of the Mohns Ridge into the ancient Spitsbergen Shear Zone (forming the Knipovich Ridge in the process) includes ancient deactivated and migrated transforms, subtle V-shaped-oriented flank faults which have their apex at the present day Molloy Transform, and rift related faults that extend north of the present Molloy Transform Fault. The Knipovich Ridge is segmented into distinct elongate basins; the bathymetric inverse of the very-slow spreading Reykjanes Ridge to the south. Three major fault directions are detected: the N-S oriented rift walls, the highly oblique en-echelon faults, which reside in the rift valley, and the structures, defining the orientation of many of the axial highs, which are oblique to both the rift walls and the faults in the axial rift valley. The segmentation of this slow spreading center is dominated by quasi stationary, focused magma centers creating (axial highs) located between long oblique rift basins. Present day segment discontinuities on the Knipovich Ridge are aligned along highly oblique, probably strike-slip faults, which could have been created in response to rotating shear couples within zones of transtension across the multiple faults of the Spitsbergen Shear Zone. Fault interaction between major strike slip shears may have lead to the formation of en-echelon pull apart basins. The curved stress trajectories create arcuate faults and subsiding elongate basins while focusing most of the volcanism through the boundary faults. As a result, the Knipovich Ridge is characterized by Underlapping magma centers, with long oblique rifts. This style of basin-dominated segmentation probably evolved in a simple shear detachment fault environment which led to the extreme morphotectonic and geophysical asymmetries across the rise axis. The influence of the Spitsbergen Shear Zone on the evolution of the Knipovich Ridge is the primary reason that the segment discontinuities are predominantly volcanic. Fault orientation data suggest that different extension directions along the Knipovich Ridge and Mohns Ridge (280° vs. 330°, respectively) cause the crust on the western side of the intersection of these two ridges to buckle and uplift via compression as is evidenced by the uplifted western wall province and the large 60 mGal free air gravity anomalies in this area. In addition, the structural data suggest that the northwards propagation of the spreading center is ongoing and that a `normal' pure shear spreading regime has not evolved along this ridge. The wavelength and Einstein A coefficient are calculated for all rotation–vibration transitions of  4He1H+, 3He1H+, 4He2H+  and  3 He2H+  , giving a complete line list and the partition function for  4HeH+  and its isotopologues. This opacity is included in the calculation of the total opacity of low-metallicity stars and its effect is analysed for different conditions of temperature, density and hydrogen number fraction. For a low helium number fraction (as in the Sun), it is found that HeH+ has a visible but small effect for very low densities  (ρ≤ 10−10 g cm−3)  , at temperatures around 3500 K. However, for high helium number fraction, the effect of HeH+ becomes important for higher densities  (ρ≤ 10−6 g cm−3)  , its effect being most important for a temperature around 3500 K. Synthetic spectra for a variety of different conditions are presented.  相似文献

The National Ignition Facility (NIF) is capable of creating new and novel high-energy-density (HED) systems relevant to astrophysics. Specifically, a system could be created that studies the effects of a radiative shock on a hydrodynamically unstable interface. These dynamics would be relevant to the early evolution after a core-collapse supernova of a red supergiant star. Prior to NIF, no HED facility had enough energy to perform this kind of experiment. The experimental target will include a 340 ??m predominantly plastic ablator followed by a low-density SiO2 foam. The interface will have a specific, machined pattern that will seed hydrodynamic instabilities. The growth of the instabilities in a radiation-dominated environment will be observed. This experiment requires a ??300?eV hohlraum drive and will be diagnosed using point projection pinhole radiography, which have both been recently demonstrated on NIF.  相似文献
