Platinum-group element (PGE) deposits in the Bushveld Complex and other layered intrusions form when large, incompletely solidified magma chambers undergo central subsidence in response to crustal loading, resulting in slumping of semi-consolidated cumulate slurries to the centres of the intrusions and hydrodynamic unmixing of the slurries to form dense layers enriched in sulfides, oxides, olivine and pyroxene and less dense layers enriched in plagioclase. The most economic PGE, Cr and V reefs form in large, multiple-replenished intrusions because these cool relatively slowly and their central portions subside prior to termination of magmatism and complete cumulate solidification. The depth of emplacement has to be relatively shallow as, otherwise, ductile crust would not be able to flex and collapse. In smaller intrusions, cooling rates are faster, subsidence is less pronounced and, where it occurs, the cumulate may be largely solidified, resulting in insignificant mush mobility and mineral sorting. Layering is thus less pronounced and less regular and continuous and the grades of the reefs are lower, but the reefs can be relatively thicker. An additional factor controlling the PGE, Cr and V prospectivity of intrusions is their location within cratons. Intra-cratonic environments offer more stable emplacement conditions that are more amenable to the formation of large, layered igneous bodies. Furthermore, intrusions sited within cratons are more readily preserved because cratons are underlain by thick, buoyant keels of harzburgite that prevent plate tectonic recycling and destruction of crust. 相似文献

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provide an efficient vehicle for the generation of mineral prospectivity maps, which are products of the integration of large geological, geophysical and geochemical datasets that typify modern global‐scale mineral exploration. Conventionally, two contrasting approaches have been adopted, an empirical approach where there are numerous deposits of the type being sought in the analysed mature terrain, or a conceptual approach where there are insufficient known deposits for a statistically valid analysis. There are also a variety of potential methodologies for treatment of the data and their integration into a final prospectivity map. The Lennard Shelf represents the major Mississippi Valley‐type (MVT) province in Australia; however, there are only 13 deposits or major prospects known, making an empirical approach to prospectivity mapping impractical. Instead, a conceptual approach was adopted, where critical features that control the location of MVT deposits on the Lennard Shelf, as defined by widely accepted genetic models, were translated into features related to fluid pathways, depositional traps and fluid outflow zones, which can be mapped in a GIS and categorised as either regional or restricted diagnostic, or permissive criteria. All criteria were derived either directly from geological and structural data, or indirectly from geophysical and geochemical datasets. A fuzzy‐logic approach was adopted for the prospectivity analysis, where each interpreted critical feature of the conceptual model was assigned a weighting between 0 and 1 based on its inferred relative importance and reliability. The fuzzy‐logic method is able to cope with incomplete data, a common problem in regional‐scale exploration datasets. The data were best combined using the gamma operator to produce a fuzzy‐logic map for the prospectivity of MVT deposits on the southeastern Lennard Shelf. Five categories of prospectivity were defined. Importantly, from an exploration viewpoint, the two lowest prospectivity categories occupy ~90% and the highest two categories only 1.6% of the analysed area, yet eight of the 13 known MVT deposits lie in the latter and none in the former: i.e. all lie within ~10% of the area, despite the fact that deposit locations were not used directly in the analysis. The propectivity map also defines potentially mineralised areas in the central southeastern Lennard Shelf and the southern part of the Oscar Ranges, where there are currently no known deposits. Overall, the analysis demonstrates the power of fuzzy‐logic prospectivity mapping on a semi‐regional to regional scale, and emphasises the value of geological data, particularly accurate geological maps, in exploration for hydrothermal mineral deposits that formed late in the evolution of the terrain under exploration. 相似文献

Over the last 40 years, there have been numerous volcanic eruptions across the North Pacific (NOPAC) region that posed a potential
threat to both local communities and transcontinental aircraft. The ability to detect these volcanic clouds using satellite
remote sensing and predict their movement by dispersion modeling is a major component of hazard mitigation. The Puff volcanic
ash transport and dispersion model, used by the Alaska Volcano Observatory, was used to illustrate the impact that these volcanic
ash clouds have made across the NOPAC and entire Polar region over the past 40 years. Nearly, 400 separate ash clouds were
analyzed that were either reported or detected to have reached above 6 km (20,000 ft) above sea level, an average of one ash
cloud every 1.25 months. Particular events showed that ash clouds can be tracked from Alaska to Greenland (Crater Peak, Mount
Spurr in 1992), from Kamchatka to Alaska (Kluvicheskoi Volcano in 1994), from Alaska to California (Mount Cleveland Volcano
in 2001) and from multiple events within 1 day (Mount Augustine Volcano in 2006). This study showed the vast number of events

The published mean δ34S values of ore-related pyrites from orogenic gold deposits of the Eastern Goldfields Province, Yilgarn Craton lie between
−4‰ and +4‰. As for orogenic gold deposits worldwide, most deposits have positive means and a restricted range of δ34S values, but some have negative means and wider ranges of δ34S values. Wall-rock carbonation and back-mixing of similar-source fluids with different fluid pathways can explain some of
the more negative δ34S signatures. However, structural setting appears to be the most important factor controlling ore-fluid oxidation state and
hence the distribution of δ34S values in gold-related pyrites. Shear-hosted deposits appear to have experienced fluid-dominated processes such as phase
separation, whereas stockwork, vein-hosted or disseminated deposits formed under conditions of greater rock buffering. At
Victory-Defiance, in particular, negative δ34S values are more common in gently dipping dilational structures, compared to more compressional steeply dipping structures.
It appears most likely that fluid-pressure fluctuations during fault-valve cycles establish different fluid-flow regimes in
structures with different orientations. Rapid fluid-pressure fluctuations in dilational structures during seismic activity
can cause partitioning of reduced gas phases from the ore fluid during extreme phase separation and hence are an effective
method of ore-fluid oxidation, leading to large, local fluctuations in oxidation state. It is thus not necessary to invoke
mixing with oxidised magmatic fluids to explain δ34S signatures indicative of oxidation. In any case, available, robust geochronology in the Eastern Goldfields Province does
not support the direct involvement of oxidised magmatic fluids from adjacent granitic intrusions in orogenic gold genesis.
Thus, negative mean δ34S values and large variations in δ34S values of ore-related pyrites in world-class orogenic gold deposits are interpreted to result from multiple mechanisms of
gold precipitation from a single, ubiquitous ore fluid in varying structural settings, rather than from the involvement of
oxidised ore fluids from a different source. Such signatures are indicative, but not diagnostic, of anomalously large orogenic
gold systems.

Karst rocky desertification is a typical type of land degradation in the Southwest China. An attempt was made to study quantitatively
the relationships between rocky desertification and spatial pattern of land use through applying spatial analysis of Geographical
Information System in Nandong underground river system, a typical karst area, Southwest China. The spatial distribution of
rocky desertification and spatial pattern of land use were obtained from interpreting Landsat Images in Nandong area in 2007
by supervised classifications, and verified and rectified through field survey. The results indicate that: (1) the total land
deserted area covers 378.3 km2, or 23.4% of the total area, of which intense, moderate and slight rocky desertification covers 269.46, 54.2, and 54.63 km2, respectively, in Nandong area. (2) There is an obvious effect of spatial pattern of land use on rocky desertification. With
the increase of elevation and slope, there is a higher occurrence ratio of rocky desertification in the cultivated land and
grass land. Also, more than half of total rocky desertification was dominated within the areas of 4 km from the construction
land, and 97% of total rocky desertification was dominated within the areas of 10 km from the construction land in Nandong
area. And what can be known from the data is that the primary effect distance of human on rocky desertification from the construction
land is 4 km, and the farthest effect distance of human on rocky desertification from the construction land is 10 km in Nandong

The Yungul carbonatite dykes at Speewah in the Kimberley region of Western Australia were emplaced along a north-trending splay from the northeast-trending Greenvale Fault located at the western boundary of the Halls Creek Orogen. The Yungul carbonatite dykes intrude a thick composite sill of the Palaeoproterozoic Hart Dolerite (~1,790 Ma), consisting of tholeiitic dolerite and gabbro with its felsic differentiates that form the Yilingbun granophyres and associated granites. The carbonatite dykes consist of massive, calcite carbonatite that host very coarse, pegmatitic veins and pods of calcite, and have largely replaced (carbonatitized) and fenitized the country rock Hart Dolerite suite in a zone up to 150 m wide. Dykes of red-brown siliceous fluidized-breccia and epithermal-textured veins consisting of bladed quartz, adularia and fluorite are closely associated with the carbonatite dykes. The Yungul carbonatites are closely associated with fluorite occurrences with resources currently reported as 6.7 Mt at 24.6% CaF2. The precise age of the Yungul carbonatite is not known, although it is believed to be post early Cambrian. The total REE content of the Yungul carbonatite is low (174.0–492.8 ppm; La/Yb 2.28–10.74) and thus atypical for calciocarbonatite. Chondrite-normalized REE patterns for the carbonatite are relatively flat compared to average calciocarbonatite, and show small negative Eu anomalies. These unusual geochemical features may have been acquired from the Hart Dolerite suite during emplacement of the carbonatite, a process that involved extensive replacement and fenitization of country rocks. Carbon and oxygen isotope compositions of massive calcite carbonatite and the coarse calcite veins and pods from the carbonatite suggest a deep-seated origin. The C and O isotope compositions show an overall positive correlation that can be attributed to both magmatic and magmatic-hydrothermal processes in their evolution. The magmatic δ13C-δ18O trend is also indicative of crustal contamination and/or low-temperature water/rock exchange. The carbon isotopic compositions have δ13C values that range from about ?5.2‰ to ?6.3‰ that support a mantle-derived origin for the Yungul carbonatites and are consistent with earlier conclusions based on whole-rock geochemistry and radiogenic isotopes studies. 相似文献

Northern Nevada hosts the only province that contains multiple world-class Carlin-type gold deposits. The first-order control on the uniqueness of this province is its anomalous far back-arc tectonic setting over the rifted North American paleocontinental margin that separates Precambrian from Phanerozoic subcontinental lithospheric mantle. Globally, most other significant gold provinces form in volcanic arcs and accreted terranes proximal to convergent margins. In northern Nevada, periodic reactivation of basement faults along this margin focused and amplified subsequent geological events. Early basement faults localized Devonian synsedimentary extension and normal faulting. These controlled the geometry of the Devonian sedimentary basin architecture and focused the discharge of basinal brines that deposited syngenetic gold along the basin margins. Inversion of these basins and faults during subsequent contraction produced the complex elongate structural culminations that characterize the anomalous mineral deposit “trends.” Subsequently, these features localized repeated episodes of shallow magmatic and hydrothermal activity that also deposited some gold. During a pulse of Eocene extension, these faults focused advection of Carlin-type fluids, which had the opportunity to leach gold from gold-enriched sequences and deposit it in reactive miogeoclinal host rocks below the hydrologic seal at the Roberts Mountain thrust contact. Hence, the vast endowment of the Carlin province resulted from the conjunction of spatially superposed events localized by long-lived basement structures in a highly anomalous tectonic setting, rather than by the sole operation of special magmatic or fluid-related processes. An important indicator of the longevity of this basement control is the superposition of different gold deposit types (e.g., Sedex, porphyry, Carlin-type, epithermal, and hot spring deposits) that formed repeatedly between the Devonian and Miocene time along the trends. Interestingly, the large Cretaceous Alaska–Yukon intrusion-related gold deposits (e.g., Fort Knox) are associated with the northern extension of the same lithospheric margin in the Selwyn basin, which experienced an analogous series of geologic events. 相似文献
