A tipping bucket flowmeter designed for the measurement of inflows to roadside gully pots is described. It is braced within the pot above the liquor and the runoff is fed to it via a glass fibre funnel and a hose. Whilst it can be calibrated to only 0·71 s?1, it is very effective at low flows and has a number of advantages over the well known Institute of Hydrology Gully Meter. Its use at Redbourn, Hertfordshire for roads on highly permeable soils shows that for both rainfall and artificial irrigation the ‘losses’ are very large and highly variable even within a single housing estate road. 相似文献

The relationship between the intensity of the South China Sea summer monsoon (SCSSM) and
the Nino3.4 index and anomalous atmospheric circulation patterns associated with a strong and weak
SCSSM are investigated using the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data, Extended Reconstructed Sea Surface
Temperature (ERSST) data and Climate Prediction Center Merged Analysis of Precipitation (CMAP) data.
The SCSSM is significantly positively correlated with the Nino3.4 index in the succeeding northern
autumn and winter. In the strong minus weak SCSSM composite, a positive East Asia-Pacific
teleconnection (EAP) pattern and a negative Europe-Asian-Pacific teleconnection (EUP) pattern appear in
the 500 hPa height difference field; low-level cross-equatorial flows are strengthened over the Maritime
Continent (MC) region; positive (negative) precipitation anomalies occur in the South China Sea and
western north Pacific (MC). A possible mechanism through which SCSSM affects ENSO is proposed. A
strong (weak) SCSSM strengthens (weakens) cross-equatorial flows over the MC. The anomalous
cross-equatorial flows cool (warm) the SST around the MC through enhanced (reduced) surface latent heat
fluxes. The cooling (warming) further leads to suppressed (enhanced) convection over the MC, and causes
the anomalous westerly (easterly) in the equatorial western Pacific, which favors the onset of El Ni?o (La
Ni?a) through modulating the positive air-sea feedback process. 相似文献

We present the results of the continuation of our magnetic survey with FORS 1 at the VLT of a sample of B‐type stars consisting of confirmed or candidate β Cephei stars and Slowly Pulsating B (hereafter SPB) stars, along with a small number of normal B‐type stars. A weak mean longitudinal magnetic field of the order of a few hundred Gauss was detected in three β Cephei stars and two stars suspected to be β Cephei stars, in five SPB stars and eight stars suspected to be SPB stars. Additionally, a longitudinal magnetic field at a level larger than 3σ has been diagnosed in two normal B‐type stars, the nitrogen‐rich early B‐type star HD 52089 and in the B5 IV star HD 153716. Roughly one third of β Cephei stars have detected magnetic fields: Out of 13 β Cephei stars studied to date with FORS 1, four stars possess weak magnetic fields, and out of the sample of six suspected β Cephei stars two show a weak magnetic field. The fraction of magnetic SPBs and candidate SPBs is found to be higher: Roughly half of the 34 SPB stars have been found to be magnetic and among the 16 candidate SPBs eight stars possess magnetic fields. In an attempt to understand why only a fraction of pulsating stars exhibit magnetic fields, we studied the position of magnetic and non‐magnetic pulsating stars in the H‐R diagram. We find that their domains in the H‐R diagram largely overlap, and no clear picture emerges as to the possible evolution of the magnetic field across the main sequence. It is possible that stronger fields tend to be found in stars with lower pulsating frequencies and smaller pulsating amplitudes. This paper discusses the results of interpreting seismic profiles on the Earth’s crust of the Maritime Territory and Sea of Japan performed during the 20th century by the Sakhalin Integrated Research Institute and by the Schmidt Joint Institute of Physics of the Earth, Russian Academy of Sciences. The seismic profiles confirmed the presence of structural features under the Maritime Territory and the Sea of Japan that were revealed previously from geological data, such as spreading zones, rifts, deep-seated faults, overthrusts, and subduction zones, suggesting an active type of continental margin in the Far East region. We assumed that a high occurrence of the asthenospheric layer enclosing magmatic chambers explains the high activity of tectonic processes in the Far Eastern continental margin. Coastal lagoons are particularly vulnerable to climate change, in particular, Sea Level Rise (SLR) due to their shallowness. Lake Burullus provides a variety of socio-economic services as the second largest coastal lagoon in Egypt. Recently, it has experienced significant ecological deterioration. Thus, its ecosystem is fragile in the face of anthropogenic induced changes. The main objective of the current study is to investigate the climate change impacts on characteristics of Lake Burullus. A depth averaged hydro-ecological modeling system, MIKE21, was applied to develop an eco - hydrodynamic model for the lake. The developed model was calibrated and verified for two successive years: July 2011–June 2012 and July 2012–June 2013. The model simulations exhibited good agreement with the measurements during the calibration and verification processes. Six different Regional Climate Models (RCMs) were compared, using six different statistical metrics, to determine the most accurate one for the study area. The required meteorological input, including surface air temperature, precipitation, and evaporation were derived from the selected RCM. The meteorological input was extracted for two different years in the 21 st century considering one Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) scenario, based on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 5th Report. Regional SLR projections for the Mediterranean Sea for the selected RCP scenario and the two studied years were obtained. These future climate change estimates were used to modify the validated model of the lake. A sensitivity analysis was applied to assess effect of future climatic conditions and SLR, separately. The results revealed that the lake water depths will increase and it will be warmer and more saline. Significant spatial variability of the studied parameters under climate change forcing is expected. Consequently, climate change is going to restrict the lake's ability to preserve the present-day species. An urgent management plan involving adaptation works, should be implemented to reduce such potential species losses in Egyptian lagoons. 相似文献
