Palaeocurrent data from parts of the Upper Buntsandstein (Lower Triassic) of both the western (Eifel: Kyllburg-Schichten) and eastern (Bavaria: Plattensandstein) margin of the German Triassic Basin (Middle Europe) have been interpreted by circular directional statistics, eigenvalue and eigenvector analysis, autocorrelation analysis and vector trend analysis. Examination of current roses, histograms of normalized vector magnitudes and plots, of circular skewness of the distribution vs. circular kurtosis, together with the palaeocurrent plots indicate bimodal palaeocurrent distributions with bipolar orientations within long, short and very short sedimentary sequences. Subset I of the directional data is interpreted to represent larger, more continuous flows in a high-energy regime of probably perennial type, whereas subset II may represent smaller, partially episodic flows of probably ephemeral type with larger variability in direction and flow regime; transport and sedimentation rates being significantly smaller than during deposition of subset I. A part of the bimodal palaeocurrent distributions within short sedimentary sequences fits rather well into the general transport pattern. Other bipolarities are primarily interpreted as effects of superimposition of channels of different orientations as well as of main channels and crevasse-splay channels, and condensation of deposition from discontinuous or episodic flows. The main mechanism creating the vertical succession of various directions is stacking of different substratum members to multistorey complexes by primary-depositional restriction of formation and/or secondary-erosional removal of topstratum sediments. The occasional occurrence of herring-bone cross-stratification representing bipolarities within very short depositional sequences, testifies to probably episodic and random changes in water surface slopes allowing currents to reverse locally. Examination of long sedimentary sequences by autocorrelation analysis reveals changes of transport directions with time in a sinusoidal manner, indicating a conformable environmental development of the alluvial watercourses which reflects a time-cyclic trend of sedimentation by spatially continuous and time-concordant shifting of the channel system. The results of the statistical analysis enable an enhanced palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of the alluvial network which fits best to a transitional meandering-thalweg-braided channel pattern. Comparison of the statistical results, especially in the light of vector trend surface analysis, clearly reflects the different palaeogeographic positions of both investigated areas, but rules out only minor influences of regionally different palaeoslopes on the alluvial depositional environment, with the basic principles of fluvial style at the western margin (Eifel) generally matching those at the eastern margin (Bavaria) of the German Basin.  相似文献

Hydrologically driven mass wasting in the form of landslides on steep slopes is a worldwide occurrence. High-profile events in, for example, Brazil, Chile, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela during the last three decades all clearly illustrate, based upon significant losses of life and property, that hydrologically driven slope instability in developed (urban) areas can be a major geologic/environmental hazard. The focus of this study is the 1973 hydrologically driven Lerida Court landslide in Portola Valley, CA, USA. Physics-based hydrologic-response simulation, with the comprehensive Integrated Hydrology Model, was employed to forensically estimate the spatiotemporal pore pressure distributions for the Lerida Court site. Slope stability, driven by the simulated pore pressure dynamics, was estimated for the Lerida Court site with the infinite slope/Factor of Safety approach. The pore pressure dynamics for the Lerida Court site were reasonably captured by the hydrologic-response simulation. The estimated time of slope failure for the Lerida Court site compares well with field observations. A recommendation is made that hydrologically driven slope stability estimates including variably saturated subsurface flow be standard protocol for development sites in steep urban settings.  相似文献

Low-salinity waters, within the upper layers of the water column, have been observed in the oceanic region of the southeastern limit of the Bay of Biscay (in March, 2007). This contribution assesses the potential role of large surface freshwater discharges from the Adour (France), Nervión, Oria, Deba, Urola, Urumea and Bidasoa (Basque Country) rivers, to explain the presence of these low-salinity waters. Such discharges, within the offshore waters, reached to at least 50 m in depth; likewise, extending over 15–20 km, in the horizontal. This pattern is confirmed by field data collected by offshore buoys, model results, and the analysis of satellite images. The presence of the low-salinity waters is corroborated by numerical simulations, performed by the ROMS (Regional Ocean Modeling System) hydrodynamic model, with the incorporation of river discharges. In order to simulate the freshwater movements and to identify their origin, particles were released at the river mouths and dispersed (by a Lagrangian particle-tracking model, LPTM), supplied by 3-hourly current fields derived from the ROMS model. The plumes of the Nervión, Oria, Urola and Urumea rivers appear to be the main factors contributing to the low-salinity field, at the offshore locations of the buoys. This pattern is related mainly to the prevailing oceano-meteorological conditions, over the period of analysis.  相似文献

Karst areas and their catchments pose a great challenge for protection because fast conduit flow results in low natural attenuation of anthropogenic contaminants. Studies of the hydrochemistry of karst sources and river solutes are an important tool for securing and managing water resources. A study of the geochemical downriver evolution of the Wiesent River and its tributaries, located in a typical karst terrain, revealed unexpected downstream decreases of nitrate with maximum mean values of 30 mg/L at the source to minimum values of 18 mg/L near the river mouth. This trend persisted over the length of the river even though increased agricultural activities are evident in the downstream section of the catchment. This pattern is caused by fertilizer inputs via diffusive and fast conduits flow from karst lithology in the upstream area that may have reached the river's source even from beyond the hydrological catchment boundaries. Further downstream, these influences became diluted by tributary inputs that drain subcatchments dominated by claystone and sandstone lithologies that increased potassium and sulphate concentrations. Our findings indicate that bedrock geology remains the dominant control on the major ion chemistry of the Wiesent River and that agricultural influences are strongest near the headwaters despite increased land use further downstream, due to long‐term storage and accumulation in karst aquifers. This feature may not be unique to the Wiesent River system, as carbonates cover significant portions of the Earth's surface and subsequent work in other river systems could establish whether such patterns are ubiquitous worldwide.  相似文献

The physico-chemical properties of water samples from the two athalassic endorheic lakes Bogoria and Nakuru in Kenya were analysed. Surface water samples were taken between July 2008 and October 2009 in weekly intervals from each lake. The following parameters were determined: pH, salinity, electric conductivity, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), the major cations (FAAS and ICP-OES) and the major anions (IC), as well as certain trace elements (ICP-OES). Samples of superficial sediments were taken in October 2009 and examined using Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) for their major and trace element content including rare earth elements (REE). Both lakes are highly alkaline with a dominance of Na > K > Si > Ca in cations and HCO3 > CO3 > Cl > F > SO4 in anions. Both lakes also exhibited high concentrations of Mo, As and fluoride. Due to an extreme draught from March to October 2009, the water level of Lake Nakuru dropped significantly. This created drastic evapoconcentration, with the total salinity rising from about 20‰ up to 63‰. Most parameters (DOC, Na, K, Ca, F, Mo and As) increased with falling water levels. A clear change in the quality of DOC was observed, followed by an almost complete depletion of dissolved Fe from the water phase. In Lake Bogoria the evapoconcentration effects were less pronounced (total salinity changed from about 40‰ to 48‰). The distributions of REE in the superficial sediments of Lake Nakuru and Lake Bogoria are presented here for the first time. The results show a high abundance of the REE and a very distinct Eu depletion of Eu/Eu* = 0.33–0.45.  相似文献

The Basque coastal area, in the southeastern Bay of Biscay, can be characterised as being more influenced by land climate and inputs, than other typically ‘open sea’ areas. The influence of coastal processes, together with the presence of irregular and steep topography, complicate greatly the water circulation patterns. Water movement along the Basque coastal area is not well understood; observations are scarce and long-term current records are lacking. The knowledge available is confined to the surface currents: the surface water circulation is controlled mainly by wind forcing, with tidal and density currents being weak. However, there is a lack of knowledge available on currents within the lower levels of the water column; likewise, on the main time-scales involved in the water circulation. This study quantifies the contribution of the tidal and wind-induced currents, to the overall water circulation; it identifies the main time-scales involved within the tidal and wind-induced flows, investigating difference in such currents, throughout the water column, within Pasaia Bay (Basque coast). Within this context, extensive oceanographic and meteorological data have been obtained, in order to describe the circulation. The present investigation reveals that the circulation, within the surface and the sub-surface waters, is controlled mainly by wind forcing fluctuations, over a wide range of meteorological frequencies: third-diurnal, semidiurnal and diurnal land–sea breezes; synoptic variability; frequencies, near fortnightly periods; and seasonal. At the lower levels of the water column, the main contribution to the water circulation arises from residual currents, followed by wind-induced currents on synoptic time-scales. In contrast, tidal currents contribute minimally to the overall circulation throughout the water column.  相似文献

Summary The problem to detect configurational defects in geodetic networks is solved by a graph-theoretical algorithm, here applied to triangular geodetic networks and being presented as a computer program in the Appendix. Based on an analysis of the incidence matrix the algorithm detects, for instance, missing vertical directions which cause two types of deficiencies. In case of only vertical direction measurements from one point to another, but no counter vertical direction measurements backwards, the rank deficiency of the first type is identified. Furtheron if there are “bare” points with no vertical direction measurements at all, the rank deficiency of the second type is found. The algorithm has proved a rank deficiency of 4+13=17 in theSW Finland triangular network which before has been found as the surprizing rank defect ofTAGNET 3d-operational adjustment.  相似文献
