Two algorithms for in-situ detection and identification of vertical free convective and double-diffusive flows in groundwater monitoring wells or boreholes are proposed. With one algorithm the causes (driving forces) and with the other one the effects (convection or double-diffusion) of vertical transport processes can be detected based on geophysical borehole measurements in the water column. Five density-driven flow processes are identified: thermal, solutal, and thermosolutal convection leading to an equalization, as well as saltfingers and diffusive layering leading to an intensification of a vertical density gradient. The occurrence of density-driven transport processes could be proven in many groundwater monitoring wells and boreholes; especially shallow sections of boreholes or groundwater monitoring wells are affected dramatically by such vertical flows. Deep sections are also impaired as the critical threshold for the onset of a density-driven flow is considerably low. In monitoring wells or boreholes, several sections with different types of density-driven vertical flows may exist at the same time. Results from experimental investigations in a medium-scale testing facility with high aspect ratio (height/radius = 19) and from numerical modeling of a water column agree well with paramters of in-situ detected convection cells.  相似文献

Single crystals of two novel calcium oxotellurate(IV) nitrates were grown under hydrothermal conditions and were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. Ca $_5$ Te $_4\text {O}_{12}$ (NO $_3$ ) $_2$ (H $_2$ O) $_2$ [ $Cc$ , $Z=4$ , $a=25.258(3)$ Å, $b=5.7289(7)$ Å, $c=17.0066(19)$ Å, $\beta =124.377(2)^{\circ}$ , $R[F^2 > 2\sigma (F^2)]=0.043$ , 4083 $F^2$ data, 281 parameters] can be described as a non-classic order/disorder (OD) structure, which fulfills the basic principle of OD theory, viz. local equivalence of polytypes, but does not strictly follow the vicinity condition (VC) of OD theory. The structure is made up from an alternating stacking of non-polar layers composed of isolated [TeO $_3$ ] units and Ca $^{2+}$ ions and polar layers containing NO $_3^-$ ions and water molecules. The electron lone-pairs of the [TeO $_3$ ] units protrude into the free space of the anion/water layers. The crystal under investigation was a non-classic OD-twin of domains of a maximum degree of order (MDO). At the twin plane a fragment of the second MDO polytype is located. The main building blocks of Ca $_6$ Te $_5\text {O}_{15}$ (NO $_3$ ) $_2$ [ $P2_1/c$ , $Z=4$ , $a=15.494(2)$ Å, $b=5.6145(7)$ Å, $c=39.338(4)$ Å, $\beta =142.480(5)^{\circ}$ , $R[F^2 > 2\sigma (F^2)]=0.043$ , 3026 $F^2$ data, 307 parameters] are isolated [TeO $_3$ ] units and Ca $^{2+}$ ions which are connected to a three-dimensional framework perforated by channels in which the N atoms of the nitrate anions are located and the electron lone-pairs of the [TeO $_3$ ] units protrude. The structure can topologically be derived from the structure of Ca $_5$ Te $_4\text {O}_{12}$ (NO $_3$ ) $_2$ (H $_2$ O) $_2$ by removing the water molecules and connecting the CaTeO $_3$ layers with additional [TeO $_3$ ] units and Ca $^{2+}$ ions.  相似文献

The formation of the Ries impact and the moldavites have identical radiogenic ages of 14.3 Ma. According to this conformity in age moldavites are generally regarded as products of the Ries impact. This paper, which is divided into two sections, deals with two aspects of the moldavite-forming process: the formation of moldavite bodies by accretion of small precursors, and the physical and chemical conditions under which these primary units originated from sands which covered the Ries impact site.First, the chemical inhomogeneity of moldavite glasses is investigated in sections of 11 moldavites, using back scattered electron (BSE) images and electron microprobe analyses on 0.4-2.7 mm long traverses. Schlieren and lechatelierite particles are interpreted as relics of small, chemically different precursors, which accumulated to larger moldavite bodies at temperatures too low to be efficient for mixing. The patterns of schlieren and lechatelierite inclusions represent two successive rheological regimes: Small agglomerating primary melt units were extended into thin lamellae and threads under conditions of laminar flow. As evidenced by folded textures, these fluidal arrays were later plastically deformed under conditions of compressional stress.To elucidate the production of the primary melt units by the Ries impact, in the second section the geologic situation of the Ries area is considered with regard to possible source materials. The site of the Ries impact, situated at the northern border of the pre-Alpine Molasse basin, was covered at the time of the impact by fluviatile sediments of the lower sequence of the Obere Süßwasser-Molasse (OSM) Formation of Middle Miocene age, consisting of sands, marly sands and clays. Chemical analyses for major and trace elements of 38 moldavites from Bohemia and Moravia, and of 28 samples of the OSM Formation, collected from outcrops and drill holes, immediately south of the Ries crater and south of the Danube, show chemical conformity of moldavites and sand samples with regard to the major parameters SiO2,Al2O3+ FeO, and MgO + CaO, indicating that these sands were the essential source material of moldavites. But, differences in contents of individual major and trace elements between moldavites and sands show that the formation of moldavites from sands involved a specific chemical differentiation which can not be explained by selective vaporization or melting, nor by selective condensation from melt or vapeur. Because large ions were enriched and small ones depleted in moldavites, the ionic radius has controlled the distribution of elements between sands and moldavites. We assume that moldavites originated from a plasma that the impact produced at its encounter with the surficial sand formation at the impact site, and that the primary units formed as early condensates in which large ions were preferentially trapped.  相似文献

Laser-Ablation-Inductive-Coupled-Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) has proved to be a reliable tool to date metatorbernite–bassetite solid solution series in Pleistocene weathering pits developing on the surface of Late Variscan granites. The maximum age of weathering in these granites in NW Spain is 1.61 ± 0.01 Ma. The likelihood to find uranyl phosphates or silicates amenable to LA-ICP-MS dating increases with increasing silica content in the magmatic bedrocks (granites) and with decreasing grade during regional metamorphism (low-grade-stage/greenschist metamorphics) of the parent material. Uranyl vanadates may be used for geochronological studies during the Quaternary as well but they are confined to arid morphoclimatic zones.  相似文献

The Schmidt‐Teleskop‐Kamera (STK) is a new CCD‐imager, which is operated since begin of 2009 at the University Observatory Jena. This article describes the main characteristics of the new camera. In this paper we describe a flux‐free fusion technique for the highly precise LA‐ICP‐MS bulk analysis of geological samples. For this purpose we have developed an automated iridium‐strip heater with temperature and melt time control. To optimise the homogeneity of the fused glasses and to reduce possible depletion of volatile elements during melting, we undertook experiments with basaltic rock and glass powders using different melting temperatures (1300–1700 °C) and melting times (5‐80 s). Major and trace element microanalysis was performed using EPMA and LA‐ICP‐MS. Homogeneous glasses were obtained for temperatures ≥ 1500 °C and melting times ≥ 10 s. High loss (20‐90%) of highly volatile elements (e.g., Cs, Ge, Sn, Pb) was observed for high melting temperatures (≥ 1600 °C) and long melting times (80 s). Standard melting conditions (1600 °C, 10 s) represent a compromise, as the glasses were homogeneous with respect to major and trace elements and, at the same time, were not depleted in elements with condensation temperatures (at a pressure of 10?4 bar) higher than about 900 K (e.g., Zr, Hf, Ba, Sr, REE, U, Mo, Ni, Rb, Ga). Several international geological reference materials with SiO2 ranging between 47% m/m and 59% m/m were prepared using our standard melting conditions (1600 °C, 10 s) and subsequently analysed by LA‐ICP‐MS. These samples also include the new Brazilian basaltic reference material BRP‐1. Matrix‐matched calibration of the LA‐ICP‐MS data was performed using the basaltic reference glasses KL2‐G, ML3B‐G, BCR‐2G and BHVO‐2G. Most analytical data agreed within uncertainty at the 95% confidence level with the GeoReM preferred values published in the GeoReM database for reference materials of geological and environmental interest. To demonstrate routine bulk LA‐ICP‐MS analyses of geochemical and cosmochemical samples using the whole rock fusion technique, we also present trace element data for ocean island basalts from Lanai (Hawaii) and of Martian meteorites.  相似文献

We evaluated the effects of fishway design and stream habitat on fish distribution and migrations within a 50 km section of the Enz River (108 km long, 16.7 m3 · s−1 mean annual discharge), a second order tributary of the Rhine River. On 12 different occasions between August 1994 and September 1995, we collected fish electrically upstream, downstream, and inside three different types of fish-passes: a concrete channel (site I), an artificial stream (site II), and a step and pool fishway (site III). During electrofishing, species identity and fish lengths were recorded separately for specific habitats or sections within the fishways, and traps were installed for 3–5 week long periods at the upstream outlets of the fishways. More than 3550 fish >5 cm and approximately 5800 young-of-year individuals of 28 species were captured. 772 fish marked by subcutaneous injection of alcian blue dye were released downstream of two fishways. Almost 1150 fish, including 5 marked individuals, were captured in the traps, providing direct evidence for migration through the fishway. The total number of species recorded decreased downstream from 21 at site I to 18 at site II, and 17 at site III. This shift in numbers and also in species composition between sites could be partially related to differences in the available habitat. There were pronounced changes in the abundance of most of the dominant species downstream and upstream of the fishway at site III, and, to a lesser degree at sites I and II, indicating species (and size) specific differences in the effectiveness of the three designs for fish passage. Furthermore, marked differences in relative fish abundance between downstream locations and inside the fishway itself, and in the relative numerical composition of the trap catch at sites I and II, clearly demonstrate that some species (Cottus gobio, Barbatula barbatula, Salmo trutta, Leuciscus cephalus) use these fishways as a habitat, whereas others (Phoxinus phoxinus, Gobio gobio) simply migrate through. Only inside the artificial stream did we find early life stages of seven species, suggesting that passage of the other fishways is restricted to older fish. Our results demonstrate that fishway design is crucial in providing continuous fish passage for all species and life-stages, and that a nature-like fishway is the most functional solution.  相似文献

Air guns and air-gun arrays of different volumes are used for scientific seismic surveys with R/V Polarstern in polar regions. To assess the potential risk of these research activities on marine mammal populations, knowledge of the sound pressure field of the seismic sources is essential. Therefore, a broad-band (0–80 kHz) calibration study was conducted at the Heggernes Acoustic Range, Norway. A GI (2.4 l), a G (8.5 l) and a Bolt gun (32.8 l) were deployed as single sources, 3 GI (7.4 l), 3 G (25.6 l) and 8 VLF™ Prakla-Seismos air guns (24.0 l) as arrays. Each configuration was fired along a line of 3–4 km length running between two hydrophone chains with receivers in 35, 100, 198 and 263 m depth. Peak-to-peak, zero-to-peak, rms and sound exposure levels (SEL) were analysed as functions of range. They show the typical dipole-like directivity of marine seismic sources with amplitude cancellation close to the sea surface, higher amplitudes in greater depths, and sound pressure levels which continuously decrease with range. Levels recorded during the approach are lower than during the departure indicating a shadowing effect of Polarsterns's hull. Backcalculated zero-to-peak source levels range from 224–240 dB re 1 μPa @ 1 m. Spectral source levels are highest below 100 Hz and amount to 182–194 dB re 1 μPa Hz–1. They drop off continuously with range and frequency. At 1 kHz they are ∼30 dB, at 80 kHz ∼60 dB lower than the peak level. Above 1 kHz amplitude spectra are dominated by Polarstern's self-noise. From the rms and sound exposure levels of the deepest hydrophone radii for different thresholds are derived. For a 180 dB rms-level threshold radii maximally vary between 200 and 600 m, for a 186 dB SEL threshold between 50 and 300 m.  相似文献

High soil temperatures influence seedling emergence as well as the performance of plant organs and yields. Temperatures of above 40°C were recorded in the topsoil of the Ferralsols of the semi-arid areas of SE-Kenya during the rainy season. Experiments were conducted in the climatological laboratory of the University of Trier, Germany, on two legumes (green grams and common beans var. kathika), grown by smallholder farmers in the study area under varying soil temperature conditions. The main objective was to examine the effect of soil temperature on various parameters: seedling emergence, crop water requirements, leaf area index and phenology of the two legumes. The simulated climatological laboratory conditions were similar to those at Kiboko, SE-Kenya. This study confirmed that under high soil temperature conditions, green grams are well adapted to semi-arid and hot tropical lowlands as well as lower midlands due to low water requirements, high seedling emergence rates and good yield performance. However, kathika beans were very susceptible to the simulated extreme climatic environment. By means of crop simulation modelling, a temporal differentiation for potential growth of green grams is presented for the long and short rains according to different rainfall conditions (ENSO, antiENSO, normal) over a period of 31 years.  相似文献

A regional conceptual hydrogeological model has been developed for evaluating residence times of both, percolate water in the unsaturated zone and groundwater in upper aquifers. The model is based on digitally geo-data bases available at the regional level and has been applied for the entire Federal State of Hesse (Germany) with a spatial resolution of 60?×?60?m. Residence times determined for unconsolidated rock areas typically ranged between 10 and 25?years, whereas residence times of <5?years were assessed for consolidated rock areas. With regard to the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive, the determined residence times may help to assess the time periods between the introduction of well-targeted groundwater protection measures and their impact on groundwater and surface water quality, respectively.  相似文献
