Tectonic slices and lenses of eclogite within mafic and ultramafic rocks of the Early Cretaceous–Eocene Naga Hills ophiolite were studied to constrain the physical conditions of eastward subduction of the Indian plate under the Burma microplate and convergence rate prior to the India–Eurasia collision. Some of the lenses are composed of eclogite, garnet-blueschist, glaucophanite and greenschist from core to margin, representing a retrograde hydrothermal alteration sequence. Barroisite, garnet, omphacite and epidote with minor chlorite, phengite, rutile and quartz constitute the peak metamorphic assemblage. In eclogite and garnet-blueschist, garnet shows an increase in Mg and Fe and decrease in Mn from core to rim. In chlorite in eclogite, Mg increases from core to rim. Inclusions of epidote, glaucophane, omphacite and quartz in garnet represent the pre-peak assemblage. Glaucophane also occurs profusely at the rims of barroisite. The matrix glaucophane and epidote represent the post-peak assemblage. The Fe3+ content of garnet-hosted omphacite is higher than that of matrix omphacite, and Fe3+ increases from core to rim in matrix glaucophane. Albite occurs in late stage veins. P – T pseudosection analysis indicates that the Naga Hills eclogites followed a clockwise P – T path with prograde metamorphism beginning at ∼1.3 GPa/525 °C and peaking at 1.7–2.0 GPa/580–610 °C, and subsequent retrogression to ∼1.1 GPa/540 °C. A comparison of these P – T conditions with numerical thermal models of plate subduction indicates that the Naga Hills eclogites probably formed near the top of the subducting crust with convergence rates of ∼ 55–100 km Myr−1, consistent with high pre-collision convergence rates between India and Eurasia.  相似文献

Tapejara wellnhoferi, a small azhdarchoid pterodactyloid from the Early Cretaceous Santana Formation of Brazil, provides critical information about the aerodynamic function of its spectacular head crest. The cranial crests in pterodactyloids were sexually dimorphic and are thought to have evolved in adult males in response to female mate choice. However, the location of cranial crests in front of the center of gravity would create instability in the yaw axis during flight and may seem like a handicap. Vertically aligned webbed feet probably suppressed the yawing rotations and instability from the crest. Here we show that the crest functioned as a front rudder to make agile turn and mediate flight control. A computer simulation model suggests that Tapejara had a large excess of muscle power available above the power required for continuous flapping flight. It could easily takeoff from a perch, ground, or water surface and land safely on the ground. It was an excellent glider with a gliding angle close to 4o and a cruising speed of 27 km/h. Tapejara could soar efficiently on the windward side of cliffs or circle on rising thermals over tropical waters for efficient long-distance flight. Various control surfaces in the wings of Tapejara analogous to the slat, aileron, elevator, fin, rudder, and horizontal stabilizer of an aircraft made pterodactyloids versatile flyers.  相似文献

We developed a generic formalism to estimate the event rate and the redshift distribution of Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) in our previous publication (Bera et al. 2016), considering FRBs are of an extragalactic origin. In this paper, we present (a) the predicted pulse widths of FRBs by considering two different scattering models, (b) the minimum total energy required to detect events, (c) the redshift distribution and (d) the detection rates of FRBs for the Ooty Wide Field Array (OWFA). The energy spectrum of FRBs is modelled as a power law with an exponent ?α and our analysis spans a range ?3≤α≤5. We find that OWFA will be capable of detecting FRBs with α≥0. The redshift distribution and the event rates of FRBs are estimated by assuming two different energy distribution functions; a Delta function and a Schechter luminosity function with an exponent ?2≤γ≤2. We consider an empirical scattering model based on pulsar observations (model I) as well as a theoretical model (model II) expected for the intergalactic medium. The redshift distributions peak at a particular redshift z p for a fixed value of α, which lie in the range 0.3≤z p ≤1 for the scattering model I and remain flat and extend up to high redshifts (z?5) for the scattering model II.  相似文献

We present a new method for textural analysis of mineral associationsthat uses digital back-scattered electron and X-ray images obtainedwith the electron microprobe to determine the spatial propertiesof minerals on a two-dimensional surface of the rock at differentscale lengths. We determine modal amounts and average grainsizes of each mineral in the thin section without resortingto ellipsoidal approximations of grain boundaries, and investigatethe spatial relationship of mineral pairs. The method is usedto characterize nine mantle xenoliths exhumed within kimberlitepipes in South Africa and to test whether the pyroxenes arespatially correlated with the garnets. The spatial associationof these minerals is used to develop a model for the evolutionaryhistory of the Kaapvaal peridotites. The observed distributionscan be explained by a two-stage model. Reversed Na-K exchange data between mica and a 2 molal aqueous(Na,K)Cl fluid (Flux & Chatterjee, 1986) have been employedto model the thermodynamic mixing behaviour of muscovite-paragonitecrystalline solutions on the basis of the Redlich-Kister equation.For these binary micas, Gexm may be expressed as where A=11222+1.389 T+0.2359 P, B=–1134+6.806 T–0.0840 P, and C=–7305+9.043 T, with T in K, P in b, Gexm, A, B, and C in joules/mol. Gmex is well constrained between 450 and 620?C, and may be extrapolatedbeyond that range with caution. The calculated solvi are skewedtoward the paragonite end member. In the range up to 15 kb,the critical temperature, Tc and the critical composition, Xcmay be expressed as a function of P by the relations: and with P indicated in bars. Calculated phase relations of muscovite-paragonite crystallinesolutions have been depicted in terms of the system KAlSi3O8-NaAlSi3O8-Al2O3-SiO2-H2O.These data may be applied to appropriate assemblages involvingmica, alkali feldspar, an Al2 polymorph, and quartz to estimateP, T and aH2O conditions of their equilibration. In principle,the muscovite limb of the solvus may be used to obtain geothermometricdata for coexisting muscovite-paragonite pairs, provided theequilibrium pressure is independently known. However, such applicationmust be restricted for the present to micas on the ideal muscovite-paragonitejoin. Mica-alkali feldspar-Al2SiO5-quartz or mica-plagioclase-Al2SiO5-quartzassemblages may be used to deduce aH2O in the coexisting fluid,if P, and T of equilibrium are independently known. Thermochemical data on several phases forming in the systemCaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 have been tested for consistency in reproducingexperimental phase equilibrium relationships. Calorimetric dataon enthalpy, entropy and heat capacity have been adjusted withinexperimental errors and new data on some phases have been estimatedusing phase equilibrium data. The consistency of the data inreproducing phase equilibrium relations in the multicomponent-multiphasesystems has been tested by computing phase diagrams using themethod of minimization of total Gibbs free energy. The recentcalorimetric data on most phases can be used without any significantchange except for phases that show cation disorder. Disordercorrections have been added to the heat capacity data on gehlenite,anorthite, spinel and Ca-Tschermak.  相似文献
