From February to March 1989 the Phobos 2 spacecraft took 37 TV images of Phobos at a distance of 190-1100 km. These images complement Mariner-9 and Viking data by providing higher-resolution coverage of a large region West of the crater Stickney (40-160 degrees W) and by providing disk-resolved measurements of surface brightness at a greater range of wavelengths and additional phase angles. These images have supported updated mapping and characterization of large craters and grooves, and have provided additional observations of craters' and grooves' bright rims. Variations in surface visible/near-infrared color ratio of almost a factor of 2 have been recognized; these variations appear to be associated with the ejecta of specific large impact craters. Updated determinations of satellite mass and volume allow calculation of a more accurate value of bulk density, 1.90 +/- 0.1 g cm-3. This is significantly lower than the density of meteoritic analogs to Phobos' surface, suggesting a porous interior perhaps containing interstitial ice.  相似文献

Structural analysis of low-grade rocks highlights the allochthonous character of Mesozoic schists in southeastern Rhodope, Bulgaria. The deformation can be related to the Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous thrusting and Tertiary detachment faulting. Petrologic and geochemical data show a volcanic arc origin of the greenschists and basaltic rocks. These results are interpreted as representing an island arc-accretionary complex related to the southward subduction of the Meliata–Maliac Ocean under the supra-subduction back-arc Vardar ocean/island arc system. Whiskers and thin platelets of pyrite have been found growing coherently on the face of small cubic pyrite crystals from the Strashimir and Gradishte hydrothermal lead-zinc deposits. The host crystals formed framboids and spheroids of macroscopic size inside large crystals of chalcopyrite from which they are separated by concentric gaps. The whiskers, one to several μm in width, are elongated along [001] and bounded by {100}, partly by {210} and {111} faces. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) observation revealed longitudinal steps and grooves, flat rectangular pits, drop-like and elongated bulges on their side faces. High-voltage electron microscopic (HVEM) studies showed that the thin whiskers are perfect and dislocation-free, although some ribbon-like whiskers and platelets contain internal longitudinal channels and small isometric fluid inclusions. Based on these observations, the following growth mechanism is proposed. Whiskers grow in the restricted volume of the internal cavities in chalcopyrite from stagnant solutions under a diffusion regime. The growth proceeds in two stages: (1) Initially, pyramidal “pedestals” are formed due to morphological instability of the host crystal surfaces and multiapex growth, (2) Whiskers grow rapidly by unidirectional supply of material and competition between neighbouring individual whiskers, the growth taking place at the tip by a two-dimensional nucleation mechanism. Fabry-Pérot interferograms of comet Hale-Bopp were obtained on several nights in March and April 1997. For this purpose we utilized the 2-channel focal reducer of the Max-Planck-Institute for Aeronomy at the 2-m telescope of the Pik Terskol Observatory. Solid Fabry-Pérot etalons of resolving power 30000 were used in both channels of the focal reducer. The main aim of this study is to measure the velocities and abundances of OH+ and H2O+, both ions closely related to the same parent molecule, H2O. In the blue channel interferograms we identified several individual OH+ rotational lines of the A3Πi - X3Σ (0-0) transition and measured their Doppler shifts. The target emissions in the red channel were the H2O+ lines of the A2A1 − X2B1 (10-0) band. We found that the line of sight velocities, obtained from the Doppler shifted wavelengths of emissions in the comet are higher in sunward direction than in the plasma tail and do not exceed 20 km s–1. The corresponding values, deprojected in antisolar direction, are consistent with predictions by magnetohydrodynamical models of the solar-wind-comet interaction, when one accounts for the extremely high gas production rate of comet Hale-Bopp. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We obtained high-resolution (λλ∼25,000) spectra of Comet C/1999 H1 (Lee) on UT 1999 August 19.6 and 21.6 using the cross-dispersed Near InfraRed SPECtrometer (NIRSPEC) at the Keck Observatory atop Mauna Kea, HI. Here we present spectra of Comet Lee between 2.874 and 3.701 μm (3479-2702 cm−1) representing the most complete high-resolution infrared survey of a comet to date in this wavelength region. Using published line lists and laboratory spectra we have identified 444 of the 545 distinct emission features present in these spectra. We have tabulated the rest frequencies, assignments, relative intensities, and signal-to-noise ratios of all detected emissions. In addition to gaining insights into the chemistry of Comet Lee, this survey provides a valuable tool for planning future high-resolution infrared observations of comets and other astronomical targets, and for retrospective comparison to existing high-resolution infrared datasets.  相似文献

Low-resolution spectra of the Io plasma torus have been obtained on 10 and 11 February 1992 (2 days after the Ulysses encounter) using the 2 m telescope of the Bulgarian National Observatory. The spectra show the forbidden line emissions of S+ (λλ 6716, 6731 Å) and S2+ (λ 6312 Å). Measured intensities are compared with a Voyager-type model. The intensity distribution of [SII] is found to deviate from the model predictions which indicates a change in the torus at the Ulysses encounter when compared with the Voyager epoch. A corotating structure was observed, both in [SII] and [SIII], at λIII = 170°, showing that the torus was not azimuthally symmetric. The λ 6716/λ 6731 and λ 6731/ λ 6312 line ratios indicate a higher electron density at the time of the Ulysses observations. Additionally, the shift of the torus caused by the dawn-dusk electric field could be observed. Peak intensities in [SII] were found at 5.66 ± 0.02 RJ on the West ansa and 5.91 ± 0.04 RJ on the East.  相似文献

Comet 73P-B/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3 was observed with IRCS/Subaru at geocentric distance of 0.074 AU on UT 10 May 2006. Multiple H2O emission lines were detected in non-resonant fluorescence near 2.9 μm. No significant variation in total H2O production rate was found during the (3 h) duration of our observations. H2O rotational temperatures and ortho-to-para abundance ratios were measured for several positions in the coma. The temperatures extracted from two different time intervals show very similar spatial distributions. For both, the rotational temperature decreased from ∼110 to ∼90 K as the projected distance from the nucleus increased from ∼5 to ∼30 km. We see no evidence for OPR change in the coma. The H2O ortho-para ratio is consistent with the statistical equilibrium value (3.0) for all spatially resolved measurements. This implies a nuclear spin temperature higher than ∼45 K.  相似文献

The residual south polar cap of Mars (RSPC) is distinct from the residual north polar cap both in composition and in morphology. CO2 frost in the RSPC is stabilized by its high albedo during southern spring and summer despite the relatively large insolation during that period. The morphology of the RSPC in summer displays a bewildering variety of depressions that are formed in relatively thin layers of CO2. The increase of the size of these depressions between each of the first three years of Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) observations may possibly signal some sort of climate change on the planet. For example, the erosion of the bright plateaus might reduce the RSPC albedo and affect the energy balance. The Mars Orbiter Cameras (MOC) on MGS observed Mars for four consecutive martian years before contact with the spacecraft was lost in late 2006. During this period coverage of the polar regions was particularly dense because MGS flew over them on every orbit. In this paper we report on the four-year behavior of the morphological features in the RSPC and on the large-scale variability in RSPC albedo over the period. The changes in the size of the surface features in the RSPC due to backwasting that were first observed between Mars years (MY) 24 and 25 and subsequently between MY25 and M26 was observed to continue at the same rate through MY 27. The results indicate that on average thicker layers in the RSPC retreat faster than thinner ones, roughly in proportion to their thickness. We argue that a simple difference in porosity between the A and B layers can explain this difference although other factors could be involved. The large-scale albedo of the RSPC decreases as the depressions are uncovered by sublimation of seasonal CO2. However, any interannual differences in albedo due to the backwasting process are masked by interannual differences in the summer dust opacity in the RSPC region.  相似文献

The Deep Impact encounter with the Jupiter family Comet 9P/Tempel 1 on UT 2005 July 4 was observed at high spectral resolving power (λ/δλ∼25,000) using the cross-dispersed near-infrared echelle spectrometer (NIRSPEC) at Keck-2. We report the temporal evolution of parent volatiles and dust (simultaneously measured) resulting from the event. Column abundances are presented for H2O and C2H6 beginning 30 min prior to impact (T−30) and ending 50 min following impact (T+50), and for H2O and HCN from T+50 until T+96, in time steps of approximately 6 min post-impact. The ejecta composition was revealed by an abrupt increase in H2O and C2H6 near T+25. This showed C2H6/H2O to be higher than its pre-impact value by a factor 2.4±0.5, while HCN/H2O was unchanged within the uncertainty of the measurements. The mixing ratios for C2H6 and HCN in the ejecta agree with those found in the majority of Oort cloud comets, perhaps indicating a common region of formation. The expanding dust plume was tracked by continuum measurements, both through the 3.5-μm spectral continuum and through 2-μm images acquired with the SCAM slit-viewing camera, and each showed a monotonic increase in continuum intensity following impact. A Monte Carlo model that included dust opacity was applied to the dust coma, and its parameters were constrained by observations; the simulated continuum intensities reproduced both spectral and SCAM data. The relatively sudden appearance of the volatile ejecta signature is attributed to heating of icy grains (perhaps to a threshold temperature) that are decreasingly shadowed by intervening (sunward) dust particles in an optically thick ejecta plume, perhaps coupled with an accelerated decrease in dust optical depth near T+25.  相似文献
