The Sanabria region (Central Iberian Zone, Variscan belt of Spain) shows an asymmetric thermal dome marked by migmatites accompanied by the Ribadelago and the Sotillo plutons. These small plutons display pronounced mineralogical variations. Biotite granodiorites and tonalites prevail, and granites and gabbros are common. Both plutons are confined in the releasing stepover of a transpressional shear zone that strikes 120°E and dips 70°SW. Most of the igneous rocks form sheets parallel to the shear zone. Magnetic foliations and lineations in the igneous rocks are parallel, respectively, to the shear bands and stretching lineations observed in the shear zone. The formation of these igneous sheets at high angle to the main axis of the regional field stress is explained by a combination of the fault-valve behaviour of the shear zone with the power of melt overpressure to open and ascend through previously formed planar structures, like S- or C-planes.

Multivariate outliers in environmental data sets are often caused by atypical measurement error in a singlevariable. From a quality assurance perspective it is important to identify these variables efficiently so thatcorrective actions may be performed. We demonstrate a procedure for using two multivariate tests toidentify which variable‘caused’each outlier. The procedure is tested with simulated data sets that havethe same correlation structure as selected water chemistry variables from a survey of lakes in the WesternUnited States. The success rates are evaluated for three of the variables for sample sizes of 50 and 100,significance levels of 0.01 and 0.05 and various amounts of mean shift. The procedure works best forhighly correlated variables.

In the interior of the Iberian Peninsula, the main geomorphic features, mountain ranges and basins, seems to be arranged in several directions whose origin can be related to the N–S plate convergence which occurred along the Cantabro–Pyrenean border during the Eocene–Lower Miocene time span. The Iberian Variscan basement accommodated part of this plate convergence in three E–W trending crustal folds as well as in the reactivation of two left-lateral NNE–SSW strike-slip belts. The rest of the convergence was assumed through the inversion of the Iberian Mesozoic Rift to form the Iberian Chain. This inversion gave rise to a process of oblique crustal shortening involving the development of two right lateral NW–SE shear zones. Crustal folds, strike-slip corridors and one inverted rift compose a tectonic mechanism of pure shear in which the shortening is solved vertically by the development of mountain ranges and related sedimentary basins. This model can be expanded to NW Africa, up to the Atlasic System, where N–S plate convergence seems also to be accommodated in several basement uplifts, Anti-Atlas and Meseta, and through the inversion of two Mesozoic rifts, High and Middle Atlas. In this tectonic situation, the microcontinent Iberia used to be firmly attached to Africa during most part of the Tertiary, in such a way that N–S compressive stresses could be transmitted from the collision of the Pyrenean boundary. This tectonic scenario implies that most part of the Tertiary Eurasia–Africa convergence was not accommodated along the Iberia–Africa interface, but in the Pyrenean plateboundary. A broad zone of distributed deformation resulted from the transmission of compressive stresses from the collision at the Pyrenean border. This distributed, intraplate deformation, can be easily related to the topographic pattern of the Africa–Eurasia interface at the longitude of the Iberian Peninsula.Shortening in the Rif–Betics external zones – and their related topographic features – must be conversely related to more “local” driven mechanisms, the westward displacement of the “exotic” Alboran domain, other than N–S convergence. The remaining NNW–SSE to NW–SE, latest Miocene up to Present convergence is also being accommodated in this zone straddling Iberia and Morocco, at the same time as a new ill-defined plate boundary that is being developed between Europe and Africa.

This study deals with the structure and emplacement of the Calmayo and El Hongo trondhjemite plutons (Famatinian belt of Córdoba, Argentina). It provides structural data from the granites and the country rocks and a study of the magnetic fabric in the plutons. New U/Pb geochronological data yield intrusion ages of 512.1 ± 3.4 Ma and 500.6 ± 4.5 Ma for the Calmayo and El Hongo plutons respectively. The El Hongo massif and the southern part of the Calmayo trondhjemite preserve magmatic structures, whereas the northern domain of Calmayo shows the imprint of solid‐state deformation. The main foliation in the country rocks outlines a boudin‐like pattern at the map scale and the granites are located along boudin necks, suggesting that the emplacement of these trondhjemite plutons was linked to large‐scale boudinage of the country rocks.

The Spanish Central System is a Cenozoic pop-up with an E–W to NE–SW orientation that affects all the crust (thick-skinned tectonics). It shows antiform geometry in the upper crust with thickening in the lower crust. Together with the Iberian Chain it constitutes the most prominent mountainous structure of the Pyrenean foreland. The evolutionary patterns concerning the paleotopography of the interior of the Peninsula can be established by an analysis of the following data: gravimetric, topographical, macro and micro tectonic, sedimentological (infilling of the sedimentary basins of the relative foreland), P–T–t path from apatite fission tracks, paleoseismic and instrumental seismicity.Deformation is clearly asymmetric in the Central System as evidenced by the existence of an unique, large (crustal-scale) thrust at its southern border, while in the northern one there is a normal sequence of north verging thrusts, towards the Duero Basin, whose activity ended during the Lower Miocene. This deformation was accomplished under triaxial compression, Oligocene–Lower Miocene in age, marked by NW–SE to NNW–SSE shortening. Locally orientations of paleostresses deviate from that of the regional tensor, following a period of relative tectonic quiescence. During the Upper Miocene–Pliocene, a reactivation of constrictive stress occurred and some structures underwent rejuvenation as a consequence of the action of tectonic stresses similar to those of today (uniaxial extension to strike–slip with NW–SE shortening direction). However, the westernmost areas show continuous activity throughout the whole of the Tertiary, with no apparent pulses. At the present time there is a moderate seismic activity in the Central System related to faults that were active during the Cenozoic, with the same kinematic characteristics.

In this paper, different Precambrian series of Hesperic Massif have been described, using some data taken from different bibliography and unpublished data by the authors. The relation among them have been discussed and also their problems stated. These Precambrian series are forming the anticlinorium nuclei of hercynian structure. The incomplete understanding of these series, as well as their occurrence in distant and isolated outcrops, give place to doubtful interpretations when traying to establish the stratigraphical sequence and he correlation among the different series. The discussion implied from the global study of these problems permit us, provisionally, to establish a general stratigraphy and a possible correlation among different units. All these series constitue an Upper Precambrian; within it three groups have been differentiated: lower group consisting of basic and ultrabasic complexes; intermediate group with a very important acid volcanism and derivated rocks, and finally upper group where pelitic schists and greywackes prevail.

Fluid flow from pore pressure measurements off La Palma, Canary Islands
In situ subseafloor pore pressure results from the western flank of the island of La Palma, Canary Islands, are presented. The data obtained with a Pop Up Pore Pressure Instrument (PUPPI) provide constraints on the fluid circulation and its causes in a very special context: The sediment piles near an intraplate oceanic island built on the continental rise of the Northwest African Margin. The ambient pore pressures estimated from 2 to 4 days long record are negative in almost all cases with values, at depths of a few meters below sea floor, usually on the order of −10 to −70 Pa. Excess pore pressures develop only in the distal most areas. The permeabilities and compressibilities obtained respectively from the decay of the insertion pressures and the amplitude of the tidally induced pore pressure variations range between 2.5×10−18 and 6.6×10−16 m2 and, 6.2×10−9 and 1.5×10−7 Pa−1. According to these permeabilities fluid flow is estimated to be mostly downward and usually on the range between 0 and −0.3 mm y−1. However, from the excess pore pressure profile a complex pattern of fluid circulation is inferred where horizontal fluid motion cannot be neglected. Horizontal flow is probably controlled by significant contrasts in the permeability of the different layers. The prevailing downward fluid flow is abnormal for a classical passive margin. We thus interpret these results as the superposition to the loss of fluids by sediment compaction (on the continental rise), of a large-scale flow system stimulated by thermal buoyancy (100 km wide) related to the volcanic activity on the island of La Palma.

The Tastil batholith (Eastern Cordillera, NW Argentina) holds relevant keys for interpreting the tectonic evolution of the Central Andes basement since it has always been interpreted as the subcrop of the Cambrian and Lower Ordovician basins in the Eastern Cordillera. However, in the Angosto de la Quesera section, the batholith intrudes sandstones underlying a fossiliferous Lower Tremadocian conglomerate containing Tastil granite pebbles. The precise assignation of the sandstones intruded by the granite to Cambrian Mesón Group or to the Uppermost Cambrian–Lower Tremadocian Santa Victoria Group is a key for refining the relationships between magmatic and sedimentary units. The ages of 526 Ma and 517 Ma (U/Pb, zircons) obtained from two facies of the batholith are coherent with the proposal of including these sandstones in the Mesón Group. However, the lithologic features and fossil content point to an affinity with the basal units of the Santa Victoria Group according to sedimentologic and stratigraphic studies ruled out by other authors. The intrusive relationships between the Tastil batholith and the Lower Paleozoic sandstones indicates the batholith is coeval with the Mesón and/or Santa Victoria groups basins instead of being its subcrop, which strongly contradicts previous proposals about basement evolution along the Lower Paleozoic margin of Gondwana. Therefore, the genesis and emplacement of the Tastil batholith must be related to the development of the Lower Paleozoic shelf basins rather than with the final stages of Puncoviscana-type basin evolution. The basement of central and northern Argentina records a wide spectrum of sedimentary, deformational, magmatic and metamorphic processes at a variety of crust levels during the Early Paleozoic. Tastil batholith emplacement and exhumation in the Eastern Cordillera represent shallower crustal expressions of the plutonic and high-T–low-P metamorphic events at deeper levels in the basement now exposed mainly in eastern Puna and Pampean Ranges.
