Current paper presents a mathematical model based on 2D-asymmetric wedge water entry to model heave and pitch motions of planing hulls at non-zero heel angles. Vertical and horizontal forces as well as heeling moment due to asymmetric water entry are computed using momentum theory in conjunction with added mass of impact velocity in vertical and horizontal directions. The proposed model is able to compute sway and yaw forces, roll moment, as well as heave and pitch motions in calm water and regular waves. Validity of the proposed model is verified by comparing the results against existing experimental data in both symmetric and asymmetric conditions. Ultimately, different parametric studies are conducted to examine the effects of non-zero heel angle on dynamic vertical motions. The resulting sway and yaw forces due to asymmetric motion are also derived and effects of heel angle on these side forces are investigated.

The object of the new hull form is to provide a single hull which possesses long natural periods of roll and heave and has substantially reduced motion response amplitudes in very high sea states. Model tests and preliminary estimates indicated that the new hull form can be designed for roll and heave motions nearly equivalent to those of much larger semisubmersible units. All existing conventional marine construction barges have rectangular cross section hull. The new hull form consists of a system of upper side tanks and lower side tanks added onto a rectangular cross section hull. The upper tanks and lower tanks form longitudinal troughs on the port and starboard sides. Structural grillage of any open type is to connect the upper and lower tanks at the side of the vessel. Figure 1 indicates a profile and a typical transverse section of the new hull form. The new hull comprises the concept of reduced water plane area which is turn results in low transverse metacentric height and low tons per in. immersion. The novel features of combining low GMT and low TPI with extremely heavy damping and added mass of the entrained water characteristics result in very long natural periods of roll and heave and considerably small rolling and heaving amplitudes in high sea states. The open side shell plating on the side of the vessel functions to dissipate wave energy at the side of the vessel which would have otherwise been transmitted to the vessel and caused the vessel to respond. This paper presents the conceptual foundation and outline of the new hull form. Model test results are presented and implemented. Also presented is the design philosophy.

The paper presents the results of an experimental investigation of added masses and damping coefficients of a model of a fast monohull. A model of 4.5 m length between perpendiculars was constructed of fiber glass reinforced plastic (FRP) with four segments connected by a backbone. The backbone was instrumented with load cells at the positions of the cuts. This configuration, combined with load cells measuring the force exerted by the forced motion actuators, made it possible to obtain the hydrodynamic coefficients for each of the four hull segments.

The investigation focused on the vertical motions. Thus, the experimental program included forced harmonic heave and pitch motions in calm water (no incident waves). Subtracting inertial and restoring forces from total measured forces, one obtained the hydrodynamic component, which then resulted in the hydrodynamic coefficients. The effects of steady forward speed on the radiation forces were investigated by conducting model tests at four forward speeds. Finally, nonlinear effects were assessed by conducting model tests for three amplitudes of forced heave and forced pitch motions.

The energy extraction performance of a flapping foil generator is studied through experiment and numerical simulation. A practical flapping foil generator has been proposed. The heave motion and the pitch motion of the foil are adjusted through a crankshaft-like structure. The heave and pitch motions of the foil are transferred to the rotational motion of the main shaft. A pair of gears is adopted to increase the pitch angle. A prototype with pitch amplitude θ0 = 60 has been built and the experiment is carried out in a tunnel. The overall performance of the mechanism has been analysed. Good agreement of numerical results and experiment data has been found. Further simulations with larger pitch amplitudes are carried out. It is found that higher efficiency can be achieved with larger pitch amplitude at medium frequency.

Equations of yaw, sway, roll and rudder motions are formulated to represent realistic maneuvering behavior of high-speed ships such as destroyers. Important coupling terms between yaw, sway, roll and rudder were included on the basis of recent captive model test results of a high-speed ship. A series of computer runs was made by using equations of yaw, sway, roll and rudder motions. Results indicate substantial coupling effects between yaw, roll, and rudder, which introduce changes in maneuvering characteristics and reduce course stability in high-speed operation. These effects together with relatively small GM (which is typical for certain high-speed ships) produce large rolling motions in a seaway as frequently observed in actual operations. Results of digital simulations and captive model tests clearly indicate the major contributing factors to such excessive rolling motions at sea.

On the parametric rolling of ships using a numerical simulation method

This paper has shown a numerical motion simulation method which can be employed to study on parametric rolling of ships in a seaway. The method takes account of the main nonlinear terms in the rolling equation which stabilize parametric rolling, including the nonlinear shape of the righting arm curve, nonlinear damping and cross coupling among all 6 degrees of freedom. For the heave, pitch, sway and yaw motions, the method uses response amplitude operators determined by means of the strip method, whereas the roll and surge motions of the ship are simulated, using nonlinear motion equations coupled with the other 4 degrees of freedom. For computing righting arms in seaways, Grim's effective wave concept is used. Using these transfer functions of effective wave together with the heave and pitch transfer functions, the mean ship immersion, its trim and the effective regular wave height are computed for every time step during the simulation. The righting arm is interpolated from tables, computed before starting the simulation, depending on these three quantities and the heel angle. The nonlinear damping moment and the effect of bilge keels are also taken into account. The numerical simulation tool has shown to be able to model the basic mechanism of parametric rolling motions. Some main characteristics of parametric rolling of ships in a seaway can be good reproduced by means of the method. Comprehensive parametric analyses on parametric rolling amplitude in regular waves have been carried out, with that the complicated parametric rolling phenomena can be understood better.

We present a study of the nonlinear coupling internal resonance for the heave roll and pitch performance of a spar platform under the wave and vortex-induced loads when the ratio of the frequencies of heave, roll and pitch are approximately 2:1:1. In consideration of varying wet surface, the three DOFs nonlinear coupled equations are established for the spar platform under the effect of the first-order wave loads in the heave and pitch, and vortexinduced loads in the roll. By utilizing the method of multi-scales when the vortex-induced frequency is close to the natural roll frequency, the first-order perturbation solution is obtained analytically and further validated by the numerical integration. Sensitivity analysis is performed to understand the influence of the damping and the internal detuning parameter. Two cases with internal resonance are shown. The first case is that no saturation phenomenon exists under small vortex-induced loads. The first order perturbation solution illustrates that only the vortex-induced frequency motion in roll and the super-harmonic frequency motion in heave are excited. The second case is that the vortex-induced loads are large enough to excite the pitch and a saturation phenomenon in the heave mode follows. The results show that there is no steady response occurrence for some cases. For these cases chaos occurs and large amplitudes response can be induced by the vortex-induced excitation.

The present paper describes a mathematical model in which the fluid motion inside a U-tank is nonlinearly coupled to the heave, roll and pitch motions of the ship. The main purpose of the investigation is centred on the control of roll motion in the case of parametric resonance in longitudinal waves. A transom stern small vessel, known to be quite prone to parametric amplification, is employed in the study. Four tank designs are employed in order to study the influence of tank mass, tank natural frequency and tank internal damping on the control of parametric rolling at different head seas conditions. Additionally, the influence of the vertical position of the tank is also investigated. The main results are presented in the form of limits of stability, with encounter frequency and wave amplitudes as parameters. Distinct dynamical characteristics are discussed and conclusions are drawn on the relevant parameters for the efficient control of the roll amplifications in head seas.

Large volume semi-submersible units may present significant wave induced resonant motions in heave, roll and pitch. Evaluating the slow motions of such systems is important from the initial stages of their designs and therefore requires a model that is both accurate and expedite enough. In the present article, different options for modeling the second-order hydrodynamic forces and induced motions are discussed using as a case-study the PETROBRAS 52 unit—P-52. Computations of the low frequency forces are performed in the frequency domain by means of a commercial Boundary Element Method (BEM) code. Different hydrodynamic approximations are tested and evaluated by directly comparing the predicted responses with those measured in small-scale tests performed in a wave-basin. From the results obtained in theses comparisons, a methodology based on a white-noise approach of the force spectrum is proposed. The validity of such approximation is attributable to the typically low damping levels in heave, roll and pitch motions. Furthermore, results also indicate that the second order forces may be calculated disregarding the free-surface forcing components, an option that helps to reduce the computational burden even more, rendering the procedure suitable for preliminary design calculations.

The seakeeping characteristics of a Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull (SWATH) vehicle equipped with fixed stabilizing fins was investigated by experimental and numerical methods The calculation methods range from viscous CFD simulation based on an unsteady RANS approach to Boundary Element Method (BEM) based on Three Dimensional Translating-pulsating Source Green Function (3DTP). Responses of ship motions in head regular waves and nonlinear effects on motion responses with increasing wave amplitude were analyzed. Numerical simulations have been validated by comparisons with experimental tests. The results indicate that the heave and pitch transfer functions depict two peaks with the increase of wave length. Comparisons amongst experimental data and different numerical calculations illustrate that the RANS method predicts ship motions with higher accuracy and allows the detection of nonlinear effects. The heave and pitch transfer functions see a downward trend with the increasing wave amplitude in the resonant zone at low speed.

Model tests were conducted on two 1:100 scaled models of a typical concrete gravity substructure at the University of Western Australia. The two models had dimensions 0.5 m length×0.5 m width with the first model being a sealed closed bottom box of height 0.1 m and the second model being an open bottom box with skirt length of 0.1 m. The mass of the air cushion model was changed to accommodate various water plug heights within the skirt chamber. Each model was floated at a constant draft of 0.1 m and tested in water depths ranging between 0.03 m (shallow) and 0.8 m (deep). The environment comprised regular waves with periods ranging between 0.6 and 3.5 s and amplitude of 0.08–0.02 m. To quantify the dynamic response the heave and pitch motions of each model were measured.A simplified theoretical solution based on long wavelength, linear wave assumptions was developed and applied to the geometries in consideration. Improvements to the theory are sought using the forcing function from a boundary element code, as well as utilizing added mass coefficients from free decay experiments. Results show that experimental trends compare reasonably well with analytical solution in particular for periods longer than the natural period. The results show that introducing air cushion support into a CGS increases the pitch response, while having little effect of the heave motion.

Ship motions after damage are difficult to evaluate since they are affected by complex phenomena regarding fluid and structures interactions. The possibility to better understand how ship behavior in damage is influenced by these phenomena is important for improving ship safety, especially for passenger vessel. In this paper an experimental campaign is carried out on a passenger ferry hull, to show the effects of the water dynamics across damage openings on ship motions. Novel aspects of this research include the study of the effects of the damage position on the ship roll response. The study is carried out for still water and for beam regular waves at zero speed. Results from the experiments carried out underline that the roll behavior of a damaged ship is affected by the position of damage opening and not only by its size. Assuming the same final equilibrium conditions after flooding but characterized by different damage openings it is possible to observe how motions RAOs and roll decay characteristics modify according to the opening locations.

A partly non-linear time-domain numerical model is used for the prediction of parametric roll resonance in regular waves. The ship is assumed to be a system with four degrees of freedom, namely, sway, heave, roll and pitch. The non-linear incident wave and hydrostatic restoring forces/moments are evaluated considering the instantaneous wetted surface whereas the hydrodynamic forces and moments, including diffraction, are expressed in terms of convolution integrals based on the mean wetted surface. The model also accounts for non-potential roll damping expressed in an equivalent linearised form. Finally, the coupled equations of motion are solved in the time-domain referenced to a body fixed axis system. This method is applied to a range of hull forms, a post-Panamax C11 class containership, a transom stern Trawler and the ITTC-A1 containership, all travelling in regular waves. Obtained results are validated by comparison with numerical/experimental data available in the literature. A thorough investigation into the influence of the inclusion of sway motion is conducted. In addition, for the ITTC-A1 containership, an investigation is carried out into the influence of tuning the numerical model by modifying the numerical roll added inertia to match that obtained from roll decay curves.

On unstable ship motions resulting from strong non-linear coupling
In this paper, the modelling of strong parametric resonance in head seas is investigated. Non-linear equations of ship motions in waves describing the couplings between heave, roll and pitch are contemplated. A third-order mathematical model is introduced, aimed at describing strong parametric excitation associated with cyclic changes of the ship restoring characteristics. A derivative model is employed to describe the coupled restoring actions up to third order. Non-linear coupling coefficients are analytically derived in terms of hull form characteristics. The main theoretical aspects of the new model are discussed. Numerical simulations obtained from the derived third-order non-linear mathematical model are compared to experimental results, corresponding to excessive motions of the model of a transom stern fishing vessel in head seas. It is shown that this enhanced model gives very realistic results and a much better comparison with the experiments than a second-order model.

This study investigates the dynamic response of a Triangular Configuration Tension Leg Platform (TLP) under random sea wave loads. The random wave has been generated synthetically using the Monte-Carlo simulation with the Peirson–Moskowitz (P–M) spectrum. Diffraction effects and second-order wave forces have not been considered. The evaluation of hydrodynamic forces is carried out using the modified Morison equation with water particle kinematics evaluated using Airy's linear wave theory. Wave forces are taken to be acting in the surge degree-of-freedom. The effect of coupling of various structural degrees-of-freedom (surge, sway, heave, roll, pitch and yaw) on the dynamic response of the TLP under random wave loads is studied. Parametric studies for random waves with different Hs and Tz under the presence of current have also been carried out. For the orientation of the TLP, surge, heave and pitch degrees-of-freedom responses are influenced significantly. The surge power spectral density function (PSDF) indicates that the mean square response is affected by the amplification at the natural frequency of the surge degree-of-freedom and also at the peak frequency of the wave loading. The PSDF of the heave response shows higher peak values near the surge frequency and near the peak frequency of the wave loading. Surge response, therefore, influences heave response to the maximum. Variable submergence seems to be a major source of nonlinearity and significantly enhances the responses in surge, heave and pitch degrees-of-freedom. In the presence of current, the response behaviour of the TLP is altered significantly introducing a non-zero mean response in all degrees-of-freedom.
