Eight stations were chosen for this 14 month survey of Tolo Harbour in Hong Kong, four of them in the harbour proper and four in the estuaries of the major streams entering the harbour. Various chemical and physical factors were measured twice each month. Water samples were collected for nutrient, phytoplankton, chlorophyll and bacteriological analysis.The annual discharge of nutrients from the four streams into Tolo Harbour has been estimated, based on the nutrient analyses and computation of annual discharge (QA) values for these streams. The seasonal and spatial variations in nutrient content are discussed in relation to the increasing organic pollution of Tolo Harbour. Calculations of various ratios between SiO3, PO4, NO3 and total inorganic N reveal that excessive amounts of phosphate are entering the harbour and subsequently accumulating in the bottom waters and sediments, leading to changes in the trophic condition of this water body and the development of anoxic conditions in the bottom layer.Significant correlation has been demonstrated between standing crop and various environmental parameters in both estuarine and marine waters and similarly between chlorophyll a concentration and various environmental parameters. However, no significant correlation values were obtained between either standing crop or chlorophyll a concentrations, SiO3Si (the latter presumably due to the predominance of diatoms in the phytoplankton). Neither standing crop nor chlorophyll determinations reveal any evidence of alternating periods of high productivity and decomposition which could explain the deteriorating bottom water conditions. This again is taken as evidence that the high organic inputs are responsible for such deterioration.Increasing TC, FC and FS densities have been noted in Tolo Harbour as a direct result of the increasing organic pollution and ratios between FC and FS densities indicate that in 55% of the samples pollution was derived from human sewage. The bacterial levels well exceeded various international standards for bathing waters and shellfish collection for at least a part of the survey period and at a number of stations for the entire survey period. Pathogenic organisms were also present. This underlines the potential health risks in these waters.Finally, the future prospects for this harbour are discussed in relation to activities such as reclamation and the development of new towns and their impact on water quality.  相似文献

利用养殖期间水体中颗粒有机质垂直迁移通量,测定了虾塘自污速率;并以虾塘沉积物的Eh和Com值为指标,结合其空间分布形式,初步探讨了虾塘中有机质污染程度。结果表明,新、旧虾塘尤其是不同养殖区域间的自污速率都存在明显差别;而沉积物中Eh和Com值的垂直分布形式,则可能成为虾塘有机质污染程度的重要评估参数。  相似文献

The Zhujiang (Pearl River) Estuary is a complex water system whose catchments basincovers a very large part of southern China. The large quantity of fresh water carried by the river system flows into the northern coast of the South China Sea through its eight inlets. The Zhujiang River Delta has experienced the fastest economic growth in China during the past two decades. Rapid population expansion and increased industrial development coupled with insufficient waste management turned the Zhujiang Estuary into waste disposal channels just before entering the coastal waters. The water quality of the estuaries and the coastal oceans has become polluted. During the past two years, an intensive study and monitoring efforts of the pollutions of these waters have been made. A systematic and integrated monitoring task including shore-based measurements, shipboard in-situ measurements, and satellite and radar remote sensing surveys has been completed. One indicator of health in estuarine and coastal ecosystems is the ability of local waters to transmit sunlight to planktonic, macrophytic, and other submerged vegetation for photosynthesis. The concentration of coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM) is a primary factor affecting the absorption of incident sunlight in coastal and estuarine waters. In estuaries, CDOM concentrations vary due to changes in salinity gradients, inflows of industrial and domestic effluents, and the production of new dissolved organic matter from marine biologic activity. CDOM absorption data have been collected from a variety of waters. However, there are a limited number of measurements along the US east coast and a general lack of data from New England waters.This study characterized the temporal and spatial variability of CDOM absorption over an annual cycle in Narragansett Bay and Block Island Sound (Rhode Island). Results suggested that, in Narragansett Bay, the magnitude of CDOM absorption is related to the seasonal variability of freshwater input from surrounding watersheds and new CDOM production from in situ biologic activity. The data show that the average CDOM absorption coefficient at 412 nm was 0·45 m−1 and the average spectral slope was 0·020 nm−1.  相似文献

The effects of monochromatic and polychromatic UV and visible (VIS) radiation on the optical properties (absorption and fluorescence) of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) were examined for a Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA) standard and for water from the Delaware and Chesapeake Bays. The primary (direct) loss of absorption and fluorescence occurred at the irradiation wavelength(s), with smaller secondary (indirect) losses occurring outside the irradiation wavelength(s). The efficiency of both direct and indirect photobleaching decreased monotonically with increasing wavelength. Exposure to polychromatic light increased the CDOM absorption spectral slope (S), consistent with previous field measurements. An analysis of the monochromatic photobleaching kinetics argues that a model based on a simple superposition of multiple chromophores undergoing independent photobleaching cannot apply; this conclusion further implies that the absorption spectrum of CDOM cannot arise solely from a simple superposition of the spectra of numerous independent chromophores. The kinetics of CDOM absorption loss with the monochromatic irradiation were employed to create a simple, heuristic model of photobleaching. This model allowed us to examine the importance of the indirect photobleaching losses in determining the overall photobleaching rates as well as to model the photobleaching of natural waters under polychromatic light fields. Application of this model to natural waters closely predicted the change in the CDOM spectral shape caused by photodegradation. The time scale of this process was consistent with field observations acquired during the summertime for coastal waters in the Middle Atlantic Bight (MAB). The results indicate that the ratio of the photodegradation depth to the mixed layer depth is a key parameter controlling the rate of the photobleaching in surface waters.  相似文献

We develop a semiempirical spectral model of penetrating irradiance taking into account the biooptical characteristics of the Black Sea. The evaluation of the contributions of the principal optically active components to the total absorption of light in the sea shows that, in the short-wave range (400–500 nm), light is mainly absorbed by the dissolved organic matter (41–77%). The contribution of phytoplankton to the total absorption attains its maximum values (26–37%) in the abyssal part of the sea in the period of spring blooming of diatoms. In the coastal waters, the absorption of light by suspended nonalgae particles in summer is almost twice as intense (20–30%) as in the open sea (8–13%). The analysis of the sensitivity of our model shows that the absorption of light by dissolved organic matter is more significant for the estimation of the photosynthetically active radiation in the Black Sea than the concentration of pigments and backscattering of light by suspended particles. The comparison of the results of model computations with the data of measurements of the underwater irradiance reveals high accuracy of the proposed model.  相似文献

对海南岛周边海域表层沉积物中7种分散元素镓(Ga)、锗(Ge)、铷(Rb)、铊(Tl)、镉(Cd)、碲(Te)和硒(Se)的分布与富集特征,及其与沉积物粒度、总有机碳和有机氮的相关性进行了较系统的分析,并分别利用内梅罗综合指数法和污染负荷指数法对这些元素的污染情况进行了初步评价。结果表明,分散元素的富集与沉积物粒度、有机碳和有机氮的含量有密切关系,除Te外,其它6种分散元素均表现出在粉砂或黏土质,以及有机碳和有机氮含量高的沉积物中趋于富集;沉积物的分散元素污染总体上呈轻微程度,但在局部海域(如海南岛西北部、西部、东南部近海海域以及陵水和三亚段海域)接近中等污染程度,说明这些区域受人类活动的影响较大,应引起海洋环境保护主管部门的重视。  相似文献

The spectral measurements of the attenuation coefficient of sea water and the absorption coefficient of suspended particles and of yellow substance were made with a spectrophotometer for the sea waters sampled in Tokyo Bay. These parameters can be used to compute the expected spectral irradiance reflectance. Some relationships between the optical properties of sea water and the concentration of dissolved organic carbon, the dry weight of suspended matter and chlorophyll-a concentration are presented. On the basis of these results, the possibility of modelling the relationship between optical and material properties is discussed.  相似文献

Absorbance at 360 nm and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration were measured on 47 filtered water samples collected from streams and rivers of the west coast of South Island, New Zealand. The regression equation (DOC (g m‐3) = 59.6 Abs1 cm + 1.9) calculated from the data, reliably predicted DOC concentration within the range 1.6–43.2 gm‐3. This relationship is similar to that found fsr some Venezuelan and south‐eastern United Stales waters indicating that it may have widespread utility for estimating DOC concentrations in soft waters where DOC is dominated by humic substances  相似文献

Psammechinus miliaris occurs in the Clyde Sea area in large numbers (<18 individuals per 100 g?1 weed dry wt) on sublittoral beds of detached Laminaria saccharina. Its rôle in weed decomposition has been examined by comparing its responses (behavioural choice, growth rate, absorption efficiencies of both carbon and protein, gut retention times and rate of faecal output) to fresh and rotting weed.Younger urchins grew faster than older individuals on a diet of rotting weed but not on fresh weed. Large seasonal variation existed, however, with fast growth occurring in June–August and little, or no, growth in December–February, irrespective of diet. Starved controls did not grow. Correcting for seasonality, rotting kelp still promoted faster growth of young urchins than did fresh weed. Larger (older) individuals showed no difference. Urchins fed fresh weed had significantly longer gut retention times. Protein absorption efficiency was higher on fresh than rotting weed, varying with weed protein content and size of urchin. Very young individuals can only digest high protein weed efficiently, eg. material derived from near the frond meristem. Organic carbon content of rotting weed was significantly lower than fresh weed. Carbon absorption efficiencies were significantly higher on fresh weed which related to organic carbon content. Standard-sized urchins fed rotting weed produced larger dry weights of faeces per day, reflecting increased ingestion rate. In closed-system choice experiments urchins preferred rotting weed kinetically. Size-frequency analysis of field populations suggested that weed beds are principally colonized by larval settlement from the plankton.Mature Psammechinus have evolved different ‘strategies’ for exploiting fresh and rotting weed. Fresh weed is relatively difficult to digest and long gut retention times allow high protein absorption efficiencies to be attained. Rotting weed has microbial protein in quantities and a lower organic carbon fraction. Some bacterial protein is seemingly unavailable though and lower protein absorption efficiencies result. Thus gut retention time is shortened and more food passed through the gut. Growth remains equivalent. Substratum digestion is of paramount importance for Psammechinus feeding on either fresh or rotting weed, cf. the ‘classical’ microbe-stripping detritivore of Fenchel.  相似文献

Abstract

Aquifers occur in basalt deposits infilling valleys in the Western Springs catchment of Auckland City, and they discharge into small streams incised along the edges of major lava flows. Total run‐off from the area is >0.261 m3·s?1. Analyses by standard methods of twelve subsurface and surface waters show that flowing groundwaters have a low level of pollution (dissolved oxygen x = 7.6 mg·l?1, abuminoid nitrogen x = 0.038 mg·l?1, and total solids x = 188 mg·l?1). Surface waters and stagnant groundwater have high, but varying levels of biological activity. Although much of the dissolved solid content of all the waters (e.g., Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, SiO2) is consistent with the chemistry of the rocks of the catchment, particularly the glassy volcanic tuffs, for surface waters various sources of pollution also make significant contributions (e.g., leaking sewers, sewage overflows, combustion of fossil fuels, fertilisers, zoo animals). Apart from its iron level, the moderate volume (~.0.13 m3·s?1) of flowing groundwater is of suitable quality for domestic, industrial and irrigation needs.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Microplastic pollution in aquatic systems has been reported globally at an alarming rate, with an increasing number of documented negative biological consequences. Research on microplastic pollution in freshwaters has barely begun in New Zealand, and few studies from smaller lotic systems such as streams exist globally. We investigated the extent of microplastic pollution within urban streams across New Zealand and determined if microplastic concentrations were related to human population density and urbanisation of streams. Fifty-two streams were surveyed across five urban agglomerations in January 2019. Microplastics were found in samples from all sites at densities ranging from <1 to 44?items/m3. This concentration range was comparable to global data but lower than reported in another recent New Zealand study, probably due to differences in sampling methodology. Microplastic pollution was similar across all urban centres, and neither length of urbanised catchment nor urban proportion of the stream were significant predictors of microplastic concentrations. These findings suggest microplastic pollution in New Zealand streams are comparable to larger aquatic systems globally, and that smaller urban streams are significant transport pathways for microplastics. We also recommend standardising microplastic sampling methods to a greater extent in the future, to improve comparability across studies.  相似文献

We analyze a two-year time-series of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) light absorption measurements in the upper 400 m of the water column at the BOUSSOLE site in the NW Mediterranean Sea. The seasonal dynamics of the CDOM light absorption coefficients at 440 nm (acdom(440)) is essentially characterized by (i) subsurface maxima forming in spring and progressively reinforcing throughout summer, (ii) impoverishment in the surface layer throughout summer and (iii) vertical homogeneity in winter. Seasonal variations of the spectral dependence of CDOM absorption, as described by the exponential slope value (Scdom), are characterized by highest values in summer and autumn at the surface and low values at the depths of acdom(440) subsurface maxima or just below them. Variations of acdom(440) are likely controlled by microbial digestion of phytoplankton cells, which leads to CDOM production, and by photochemical destruction (photobleaching), which leads to CDOM degradation. Photobleaching is also the main driver of Scdom variations. Consistently with previous observations, acdom(440) for a given chlorophyll a concentration is higher than expected from Case I waters bio-optical models. The total non-water light absorption budget shows that surface waters at the BOUSSOLE site are largely dominated by CDOM during all seasons but the algal bloom in March and April. These results improve the knowledge of CDOM absorption dynamics in the Mediterranean Sea, which is scarcely documented. In addition, they open the way to improved algorithms for the retrieval of CDOM absorption from field or satellite radiometric measurements.  相似文献

本文基于42组不同年份不同季节获得的遥感反射率、水体各组分吸收系数的实测数据,对QAA(Quasi-Analytical Algorithm)和GSM(Garver-Siegel-Maritorena)算法在寡营养的南海和富营养的福建沿岸两种不同类型水体的吸收系数反演进行了检验。以水样测量值为参考,两种算法在本研究水体中的反演成效与他人在其它水域的研究结果相当。QAA算法在南海的反演成效高于福建沿岸水体。对于443 nm的总吸收系数(a443 ),南海的对数均方根误差(RMSE )为0.046,平均相对误差为7.9%,对数平均偏差为0;福建沿岸水体的对数均方根误差(RMSE )为0.194,平均相对误差为30.6%,对数平均偏差为-0.167 。GSM算法在两类水体的反演成效类似,A443 之RMSE和平均相对误差,南海分别为0.161和27.7%,福建沿岸分别为0.149和32.1%,但从A443的对数平均偏差值看,其在南海反演值低于实测值(对数平均偏差为-0.142 ),在福建沿岸则略呈高于实测值(对数平均偏差为0.016)。两种算法中的部分经验参数与实测值之间的差异是产生反演误差的主要原因,为了提高反演精度,对算法中经验参数的更进一步区域化调整可能是必要的。  相似文献

The aim of this study is to understand the various sources and factors controlling the abundance and distribution of the metals through the analyses of selected metals (iron, manganese, chromium, copper, zinc and cobalt), sand, silt, clay, organic carbon and magnetic susceptibility of the surface sediments of Zuari estuary in three different seasons. Total suspended matter (TSM) concentration and salinity of near surface and bottom waters were also measured. The study undertaken for three seasons, based on 18 selected stations all along the estuary, indicated that the concentration of most of the metals were comparatively higher during pre-monsoon than in monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. Further, along the length of the estuary, high concentrations were observed at lower middle and lower estuary and also at few stations at the upstream end. Salinity, distribution of TSM, size of the sediment, organic matter, geomorphological setup, fresh water input from land and release of industrial waste within the estuary played a role in distribution and concentration of metals. Magnetic measurements indicated the dominance of haematite like minerals and helped in understanding the source and depositional processes.  相似文献

The oxygen and carbon stable isotope compositions of the present-day Mediterranean waters have been measured in order to evaluate their variability, which is related to the specific climatic and hydrological conditions within the basin. The experimental equation between the δ18O value and the salinity of water, based on 300 measurements on surface, intermediate, and deep waters sampled during the VICOMED 2 and 3 cruises in the western, central and eastern Mediterranean, has a slope of 0.27, a value which is significantly lower than the slope of 0.45, as defined in the northeast Atlantic Ocean. This difference in the δ18O–salinity relationship, which occurs immediately in the Alboran basin, is basically a characteristic of the climatic regime of the Mediterranean, i.e., of an excess evaporation over fresh water input. The largest variations of these two parameters, δ18O of water and δ13C of ∑CO2, are observed in the surface waters, mostly in the western Mediterranean. This evolution mirrors the progressive eastward restriction, which separates the less-evaporated and more-productive western basins from the more-evaporated and less-productive eastern basins. The intermediate waters constitute a homogeneous layer. However, their δ18O values decrease eastward by 0.35‰ at maximum, due to progressive dilution by mixing with overlying and underlying water masses; their δ13C values decrease also eastward by 0.35‰ at maximum, due to an increasing input of nutrients issued from the regeneration of sinking organic particles. The deep waters have similar δ18O values but slightly higher δ13C values (often by less than 0.1‰) than the overlying intermediate waters, indicating generally well ventilated conditions due to active winter convection.  相似文献

Chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) is the light absorbing fraction of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). The optical properties of CDOM potentially permit remote sensing of DOC and CDOM, and correction for CDOM absorption is essential for remote sensing of chlorophyll a (chl a) in coastal and estuarine waters. To provide data for this purpose, we report the distributions of CDOM, DOC, and chl a from seven cruises in Chesapeake Bay in 1994–1997. We observed non-conservative distributions of chl a and DOC in half of the cruises, indicating net accumulations within the estuary; however, there were no net accumulations or losses of CDOM, measured as absorption at 355 nm or as fluorescence. Freshwater end member CDOM absorption varied from 2.2 to 4.1 m−1. Coastal end member CDOM absorption was considerably lower, ranging over 0.4–1.1 m−1. The fluorescence/absorption ratio was similar to those reported elsewhere for estuarine and coastal waters; however, in the lower salinity/high CDOM region of the Bay, the relationship was not constant, suggestive of the mixing of two or more CDOM sources. Chl a was not correlated with the absorption for most of the cruises nor for the data set as a whole; however, CDOM and DOC were significantly correlated, with two groups evident in the data. The first group had high CDOM concentrations per unit DOC and corresponded to the conservative DOC values observed in the transects. The second group had lower CDOM concentrations per unit DOC and corresponded to the non-conservative DOC values associated with net DOC accumulation near the chl a maximum on the salinity gradient. This indicates the production of non-chromophoric DOC in the region of the chl a maximum of Chesapeake Bay. In terms of remote sensing, these data show that (1) the retrieval of the absorption coefficient of CDOM from fluorescence measurements in the Bay must consider the variability of the fluorescence/absorption relationship, and (2) estimates of DOC acquired from CDOM absorption will underestimate DOC in regions with recent, net accumulations of DOC.  相似文献

My studies on metabolism of organic matter in aquatic environments first involved research on the sedimentation process of organic matter in lacustrine environments. Subsequently, measurements of primary production in lake and sea water were undertaken to know the organic substance supply into the metabolism. After establishing the routine technique of productivity measurement in aquatic environment, the primary production and the photosynthetic characteristics in waters in the northwestern Pacific, the western Indian Ocean and the Antarctic Sea were studied. Following the development of new methods to determine the organic substances in the dissolved and particulate forms and chlorophyll pigment in seawater, their distributions both horizontal and vertical directions were determined. And I have had interest in the mechanism producing a subsurface chlorophyll maximum in the ocean. Recently, my major interest has been directed to the coastal waters. The nitrogen cycle was studied in oyster beds and the research on eutrophication processes in a shallow bay is being carried out from the aspect of production and decomposition of organic matter.  相似文献
