Solutions were computed for the vertical ambient sea noise field directionality at five sites in the Western North Atlantic Ocean using data from a 26-hydrophone element array with a 358.4-foot aperture at a center depth of 1,000 feet. Results show that the low-frequency noise below 100 Hz is concentrated near the horizontal (50 to 93 percent of the noise power between /spl plusmn/15/spl deg/ of horizontal) and is apparently dependent on bottom loss and shipping density. The results in the band 200 to 380 Hz are a combination of sea state and shipping noise dependent. A noise field solution technique was developed involving noise cross spectral matrix inversions. This technique overcomes some of the drawbacks of previous techniques such as least mean square estimation and successive approximations.  相似文献

The method of principal component beamforming described in this paper is an array data reduction method that allows one to observe the statistically uncorrelated components of wave energy arriving at an array of acoustic sensors. The method can be used to process array data so as to observe and identify the sources of noise, both environmental and self noise. After identifying the sources of noise, the method of principal components can be used to discriminate signal from noise. The method can be applied to active systems (subbottom profilers) as well as passive systems. A model of isotropic noise and incident bandlimited plane waves is used to study array resolution and bandwidth effects. Experimental data from a2 times 3planar acoustic array were used to identify sources of hydro-flow related noise in an underwater vehicle. In all cases studied, the technique provides a maximum spatial information analysis method to the observer.  相似文献

A digital array of 120 acoustic channels 900 m in length has been constructed to study low-frequency (20-200 Hz) ambient noise in the ocean. The array may be deployed vertically or horizontally from the research platform FLIP and the array elements are localized with a high-frequency acoustic transponder network. The authors describe the instrumentation, telemetry, and navigation systems of the array during a vertical deployment in the northeast Pacific. Preliminary ambient noise spectra are presented for various array depths and local wind speeds. Ambient noise in the frequency band above 100 Hz or below 25 Hz increases with local wind speed. However, in the frequency band 25-100 Hz, ambient noise is independent of wind speed and may be dominated by shipping sources  相似文献

A novel array was designed and tested in the eastern Pacific Ocean for the measurement of the vertical directionality of ambient noise. The results of the test, conducted in 1983, illustrate the existence of a 5-dB "noise notch" for arrival angles associated only with submerged acoustic sources. A measurement system based on improvements to the design and processing is described.  相似文献

Measurements of the natural extremely low-frequency (ELF) radio noise (known as Schumann resonances) in the period 1988-1989 have enabled average atmospheric noise levels and Schumann resonance parameters to be deduced. At 45 Hz, the average measured electric field was 41.6 dB·μV/m·√(Hz). It is assumed that the Schumann resonance noise field in the air-space in the vicinity of the observation point can be considered to be represented as the sum of four components, one arising from propagation over a short great-circle path, and a second representing a long great-circle path contribution, each of these having an upgoing and a downgoing part. The noise fields can then be estimated at any given depth below the ground (or sea) surface from the measured values in the air. The authors present results showing the computed fields produced in the sea from submerged horizontal electric quadrupole and vertical electric dipole man-made sources, and compare these with the subsurface atmospheric noise fields deduced from the experimental measurements  相似文献

Abstract

For high frequency ocean acoustic modeling applications, seabed reflection loss is a useful alternative input compared to conventional geoacoustic model parameters. Reflection loss can be estimated by comparing the noise intensity of the up and down components of the ambient noise vertical directionality pattern. The potential of this method is demonstrated with experimental data spanning one week, collected off shallow east coast of India using a 21 element vertical hydrophone array. The compact and easily operable vertical array has been designed for high frequency directionality estimation in the band 2–10?kHz. The ambient noise data are beam formed to arrive at the vertical directionality pattern. Further reflection loss values as a function of frequency and grazing angle have been estimated for 1/3 octave bands for a sandy sea bed in warm tropical waters. This has been compared with modeled reflection loss estimates using OASR reflection loss module of OASES. This will serve as inputs to propagation models for applications such as inverse techniques, ambient noise modelling, and sonar system performance prediction.  相似文献

Although the existing array shape estimation methods using reference sources demonstrate good performance, most of the methods require at least two reference sources 2RS in known locations and the reference sources must be in far field. This communication proposes a simplified subspace fitting method that uses only a single reference source 1RS. In the proposed method, the horizontal and vertical positions of each sensor are modeled by applying fixed intersensor spacing and sensor angles, so that the unknown parameters of the cost function are reduced. Furthermore, the Cramer–Rao lower bound (CRLB) is investigated for the proposed method. The results of the numerical experiments indicate that the proposed method is practical for estimating the shape of a towed array.   相似文献

Based on the general concept of the inverse acoustic radiation problem, the temporal scanning of a stationary acoustic field along a closed contour is used to simplify the measurement approach for obtaining information on source directionality. The mathematical formulation is derived from a model of the two-dimensional acoustic field. The formulation of the inverse problem is also investigated to establish a methodology for improving the angular resolution of the array processing. The fundamental relationship between the sound sources and the circular passive synthetic array is explored, utilizing existing mathematical methods, in order to develop the processing algorithm. Other subjects of practical interest, such as directional ambiguity, effect of Doppler frequency, interference noise, and processing gain are discussed. It is concluded that the results can be used to establish guidelines for engineering design and deployment of this type of synthetic array, and to further exploit the new array signal processing technique  相似文献

A numerical solution is developed to investigate the generation and propagation of small-amplitude water waves in a semi-infinite rectangular wave basin. The three-dimensional wave field is produced by the prescribed “snake-like” motion of an array of segmented wave generators located along the wall at one end of the tank. The solution technique is based on the boundary element approach and uses an appropriate three-dimensional Green function which explicitly satisfies the tank-wall boundary conditions. The Green function and its derivatives which appear in the integral equation formulation can be shown to be slowly convergent when the source and field points are in close proximity. Therefore, when computing the velocity potentials on the wave generators, the source points are chosen outside the fluid domain, thereby ensuring the rapid convergence of these functions and rendering the integral equations non-singular. Numerical results are shown which illustrate the influence of the various wavemaker and basin parameters on the generated wave field. Finally, the complete wave field produced by the diffraction of oblique waves by a vertical circular cylinder in a basin is presented.  相似文献

In April 1994, coherent acoustic transmissions were propagated across the entire Arctic basin for the first time. This experiment, known as the Transarctic Acoustic Propagation Experiment (TAP), was designed to determine the feasibility of using these signals to monitor changes in Arctic Ocean temperature and changes in sea ice thickness and concentration. CW and maximal length sequences (MLS) were transmitted from the source camp located north of the Svalbard Archipelago 1000 km to a vertical line array in the Lincoln Sea and 2600 km to a two-dimensional horizontal array and a vertical array in the Beaufort Sea. TAP demonstrated that the 19.6-Hz 195-dB (251-W) signals propagated with both sufficiently low loss and high phase stability to support the coherent pulse compression processing of the MLS and the phase detection of the CW signals. These yield time delay measurements an order of magnitude better than what is required to detect the estimated 80-ms/year changes in travel time caused by interannual and longer term changes in Arctic Ocean temperature. The TAP data provided propagation loss measurements to compare with the models to be used for correlating modal scattering losses with sea ice properties for ice monitoring. The travel times measured in TAP indicated a warming of the Atlantic layer in the Arctic of close to 0.4°C, which has been confirmed by direct measurement from icebreakers and submarines, demonstrating the utility of acoustic thermometry in the Arctic. The unique advantages of acoustic thermometry in the Arctic and the importance of climate monitoring in the Arctic are discussed. A four-year program, Arctic Climate Observations using Underwater Sound is underway to carry out the first installations of sources and receivers in the Arctic Ocean  相似文献

This paper presents an evaluation of second, third, and fourth-order moments for the passive detection of transient signals in both simulated Gaussian noise and measured noise. The measured noise was recorded by a vertical array located near the San Diego, CA, harbor and is dominated at low frequencies by ship-generated noise. The detectors assume neither noise nor signal stationarity and can use single or multiple channels of data. Simulation results indicate that the fourth-order moment detector often performs better than the energy detector in the correlated measured noise, with increasing channel contributions to the moment function, resulting in increased gain. The results in simulated Gaussian noise likewise favor the fourth-order moment detector, at least for the signals with significant fourth-order moments, but the ability of the higher order detector to discriminate against correlated noise is evident. Analysis over a 30-min segment of the measured noise with selected signals demonstrates that fourth-order detection gains can be reliably expected as the noise statistics change.  相似文献

This paper describes results from geoacoustic inversion of low-frequency acoustic data recorded at a receiving array divided into two sections, a sparse bottom laid horizontal array (HLA) and a vertical array (VLA) deployed in shallow water. The data are from an experiment conducted by the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI) in the Barents Sea, using broadband explosives (shot) sources. A two-layer range-independent geoacoustic model, consistent with seismic profiles from the area, described the environment. Inversion for geoacoustic model parameters was carried out using a fast implementation of the hybrid adaptive simplex simulated annealing (ASSA) inversion algorithm, with replica fields computed by the ORCA normal mode code. Low-frequency (40-128 Hz) data from six shot sources at ranges 3-9 km from the array were considered. Estimates of sediment and substrate p-wave velocities and sediment thickness were found to be consistent between independent inversions of data from the two sections of the array.  相似文献

A seismic reflection profiling system consisting of a 264 m long, deep-towed, 15-element, end-fire, vertical array and a 40 cubic inch airgun was successfully used to profile a sediment pond in the trough of the inactive segment of the Kane Fracture Zone close to it's intersection with the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at 24° N. The increased signal to noise ratio achieved with the array demonstrates that it is a useful tool for detailed seismic profiling in areas of rough topography in the deep ocean.Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Contribution No. 5443.  相似文献

A method is described for the estimation of geoacoustic model parameters by the inversion of acoustic field data using a nonlinear optimization procedure based on simulated annealing. The cost function used by the algorithm is the Bartlett matched-field processor (MFP), which related the measured acoustic field with replica fields calculated by the SAFARI fast field program. Model parameters are perturbed randomly, and the algorithm searches the multidimensional parameter space of geoacoustic models to determine the parameter set that optimizes the output of the MFP. Convergence is driven by adaptively guiding the search to regions of the parameter space associated with above-average values of the MFP. The performance of the algorithm is demonstrated for a vertical line array in a shallow water enviornment where the bottom consists of homogeneous elastic solid layers. Simulated data are used to determine the limits on estimation performance due to error in experimental geometry and to noise contamination. The results indicate that reasonable estimates are obtained for moderate conditions of noise and uncertainty in experimental geometry  相似文献

Measurements in the Levantine Sea with a seismic-type array [i.e., the high-frequency array (27 wavelengths at 348 Hz), the mid-frequency array (27 wavelengths at 175 Hz), and the low-frequency array (21 wavelengths at 58 Hz)] were found to have on average results within 1 dB of the theoretical signal gain. Observed signal gain degradations for peak-tracked and short integration times (1 min) had standard deviations from 2 to 3 dB and were caused by the combination of coherent multipaths, array shape, and array motion. The relative motion of source and receiver (5-8 kn) was an important cause of the average degradation at longer integration times (5 min). Equivalent plane wave beam noise levels were measured as a function of frequency, time, bearing, and aperture length. The beam noise level results show contributions from distant surface-ship-generated noise and natural environmental background noise. These results showed resolved distant shipping with median beam noise levels consistent with array noise gain 1-2 dB greater than the theoretical value for incoherent isotropic noise. The beam noise cumulative probability distribution function versus equivalent plane wave levels differed significantly from log-normality. Beam noise surfaces (beam noise levels versus time and bearing) show a higher density of ships for the high-frequency array when compared to the low-frequency array. Beam-to-beam cross correlations were found be sharply peaked and beam autocorrelation functions versus time showed zero crossing times on the order of 9-10 min. Significant space-time noise fade durations were observed at lower frequencies  相似文献

In this study an attempt has been made to extract sediment geoacoustic properties using ambient noise measured from a vertical hydrophone array. Time series noise data recorded from three shallow water sites (Chennai, Cuddalore and Cochin) along the Indian continental shelf were used for the analysis. The compressional sound speed of sediment for all the sites was estimated from the vertical directionality of ambient noise. Using the value of the compressional sound speed remaining wave properties and material properties were deduced from the Grain-Shearing (G-S) theory of wave propagation in saturated granular media. The type of sediment extracted from the G-S theory correlates well with the results obtained from sieve and particle size analysis of grab samples, collected from all the sites. The study clearly shows the application of ambient noise in extracting environmental information in shallow water, and further applying it to improve sonar performance modeling.  相似文献

This paper presents results of combined consideration of sound coherence and array signal processing in long-range deep-water environments. Theoretical evaluation of the acoustic signal mutual coherence function (MCF) of space for a given sound-speed profile and particular scattering mechanism is provided. The predictions of the MCF are employed as input data to investigate the coherence-induced effects on the horizontal and vertical array gains associated with linear and quadratic beamformers with emphasis on the optimal ones. A method of the radiation transport equation is developed to calculate the MCF of the multimode signal under the assumption that internal waves or surface wind waves are the main source of long-range acoustic fluctuations in a deep-water channel. Basic formulations of the array weight vectors and small signal deflection are then exploited to examine optimal linear and quadratic processors in comparison with plane-wave beamformers. For vertical arrays, particular attention is paid also to evaluation of the ambient modal noise factor. The numerical simulations are carried out for range-independent environments from the Northwest Pacific for a sound frequency of 250 Hz and distances up to 1000 km. It was shown distinctly that both signal coherence degradation and modal noise affect large-array gain, and these effects are substantially dependent on the processing technique used. Rough surface sound scattering was determined to cause the most significant effects  相似文献
