In practical maritime conditions, ship hulls experience heave motion due to the action of waves, which can further drive the ship’s propellers to oscillate relative to the surrounding water. In order to investigate the motion of a propeller working behind a surface vessel sailing in waves, a numerical simulation is conducted on a propeller impacted by heave motion in cavitating flow using the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) method. The coupling of the propeller’s rotation and translation is fulfilled using equations of motion defined for this purpose. The heave motion is simplified as a periodic motion based on a sinusoidal function. The numerical transmission of information from the unsteady flow field is achieved using the overset grid approach. In this manner, the unsteady thrust coefficient and torque coefficient of propellers in different periods of heave motion are analyzed. A comparative study is implemented on the unsteady cavitation performance and wake characteristics of propeller. With the propeller’s heave motion, the flow field non-uniformity constantly changes the load on the propeller during each revolution period and each heaving period, the propeller load and the wake field are closely related to the variation of heave motion period. The results obtained from the numerical simulation are expected to serve as a useful theoretical reference for the numerical analysis of a propeller in a heave motion.  相似文献

In this study, a dynamic modeling method for foil-like underwater vehicles is introduced and experimentally verified in different sea tests of the Hadal ARV. The dumping force of a foil-like underwater vehicle is sensitive to swing motion. Some foil-like underwater vehicles swing periodically when performing a free-fall dive task in experiments. Models using conventional modeling methods yield solutions with asymptotic stability, which cannot simulate the self-sustained swing motion. By improving the ridge regression optimization algorithm, a grey-box modeling method based on 378 viscous drag coefficients using the Taylor series expansion is proposed in this study. The method is optimized for over-fitting and convergence problems caused by large parameter matrices. Instead of the PMM test data, the unsteady computational fluid dynamics calculation results are used in modeling. The obtained model can better simulate the swing motion of the underwater vehicle. Simulation and experimental results show a good consistency in free-fall tests during sea trials, as well as a prediction of the dive speed in the swing state.  相似文献

A new six Degree Of Freedom (6DOF) motion measurement technique for small-scale physical models of floating bodies is presented, based on analysis of image sequence from one camera. The proposed system consists of one camera and one target: the method estimates the 3-D rigid motion following the time evolution of the target of known pattern fixed to the moving body and framed by the camera. In particular, the rotation matrix and the translation vector of the 3-D rigid motion between initial still position and a generic moved position are calculated by assuming the existence of a planar homography between the camera CCD plane and the plane passing through the flat target surface. Geometrical relationship allows one the calculation of wanted 6DOFs for every point of the modeled body. In the paper, the method is mathematically presented in terms of equations of rigid motion with its associate accuracies. The image-based technique is illustrated on some tests carried out in an experimental multipurpose wave basin.  相似文献

A new approach to multibody dynamics is investigated by treating floating wind turbines as multibody systems. The system is considered as three rigid bodies: the tower, nacelle and rotor. Three large-amplitude rotational degrees of freedom (DOFs) of the tower are described by 1-2-3 sequence Euler angles. Translation of the entire system is described by Newton’s second Law applied to the center of mass (CM) of the system and transferred to 3 translational DOFs of the tower. Additionally, two prescribed DOFs governed by mechanical control, nacelle yaw and rotor spin, are combined with the 6 DOFs of the tower to formulate the 8-DOF equations of motion (EOMs) of the system. The CM of the system is generally time-varying and not constrained to any rigid body due to the arbitrary location of the CM of each body and relative mechanical motions among the bodies. The location of the CM being independent of any body is considered in both the solution to 3 translational DOFs and the calculation of angular momentum of each body for 3 rotational DOFs. The theorem of conservation of momentum is applied to the entire multibody system directly to solve 6 unknown DOFs. Motions computed using the six nonlinear EOMs are transformed to each body in a global coordinate system at every time-step for use in the computation of hydrodynamics, aerodynamics and restoring forcing, which preserves the nonlinearity between external excitation and structural dynamics. The new method is demonstrated by simulation of the motion of a highly compliant floating wind turbine. Results are verified by critical comparison with those of the popular wind turbine dynamics software FAST.  相似文献

Low frequent motions of vessel may cause motion sickness in rough seas. These undesirable effects induce fatigue of crews during the navigation. The motion sickness is always an important criterion for the high-speed craft design. Modern ferry designs have been marketed with a great emphasis on the seakeeping performance. This research has been carried out by investigating the results on the vertical motion sickness incidence (MSI) study for a 40 m wave-piecing catamaran at seas. The primary purpose of this research is to investigate the vertical motion sickness characteristics of a high-speed catamaran ferry. Two mathematical models, three-dimensional translating–pulsating source distribution technique and three-dimensional pulsating source distribution technique, are used for predicting the vertical acceleration responses of the wave-piecing catamaran in oblique waves. The comparison between numerical predictions and experimental data shows a good agreement except that around the pitch resonance region in FP vertical acceleration motions. Based on the experimental observation, the discrepancies may be caused by the nonlinear effects of centre bow during large pitch motions in waves. The comfort assessments are based on the ISO-2631/1997 standard with the hydrodynamic analysis for determining the acceleration levels in different locations on the vessel. The effects of seating location, wave heading and duration of motion exposure on seasickness are discussed.  相似文献

A numerical study of vortex-induced rotations(VIRs) of an equivalent triangular cylinder, which is free to rotate in the azimuthal direction in a uniform flow, is presented. Based on an immersed boundary method, the numerical model is established, and is verified through the benchmark problem of flow past a freely rotating rectangular body. The computation is performed for a fixed reduced mass of m~*=2.0 and the structural stiffness and damping ratio are set to zero. The effects of Reynolds number(Re=25-180) on the characteristics of VIR are studied. It is found that the dynamic response of the triangular cylinder exhibits four distinct modes with increasing Re: a rest position, periodic rotational oscillation, random rotation and autorotation. For the rotational oscillation mode, the cylinder undergoes a periodic vibration around an equilibrium position with one side facing the incoming flow. Since the rotation effect, the outset of vortex shedding from cylinder shifts to a much lower Reynolds number. Further increase in Re leads to 2 P and P+S vortex shedding modes besides the typical 2 S pattern. Our simulation results also elucidate that the free rotation significantly changes the drag and lift forces. Inspired by these facts, the effect of free rotation on flow-induced vibration of a triangular cylinder in the in-line and transverse directions is investigated. The results show that when the translational vibration is coupled with rotation, the triangular cylinder presents a galloping response instead of vortex-induced vibration(VIV).  相似文献

During ice-breaking navigation, a massive amount of crushed ice blocks with different sizes is accumulated under the hull of an ice-going ship. This ice slides into the flow field in the forward side of the podded propulsor, affecting the surrounding flow field and aggravating the non-uniformity of the propeller wake. A pulsating load is formed on the propeller, which affects the hydrodynamic performance of the podded propulsor. To study the changes in the propeller hydrodynamic performance during the ice podded propulsor interaction, the overlapping grid technique is used to simulate the unsteady hydrodynamic performance of the podded propulsor at different propeller rotation angles and different ice block sizes. Hence, the hydrodynamic blade behavior during propeller rotation under the interaction between the ice and podded propulsor is discussed. The unsteady propeller loads and surrounding flow fields obtained for ice blocks with different sizes interacting with the podded propulsor are analyzed in detail. The variation in the hydrodynamic performance during the circular motion of a propeller and the influence of ice size variation on the propeller thrust and torque are determined. The calculation results have certain reference significance for experiment-based research, theoretical calculations and numerical simulation concerning ice podded propulsor interaction.  相似文献

The use of free-fail penetrators is being now actively considered by many national and international organizations as a possible option for the safe final, disposal of high-level radioactive waste in vitrified form within deep-ocean sedimentary geological formations. The present paper describes methods and results of a study aimed at highlighting the effects of a number of different parameters on penetrator performance. This work is intended as a preparation of a new series of tests to be carried out during 1984-1986 to assess the present modeling capabilities in more detail. An initial experiment carried out in March 1983, using large model penetrators (3.25 m long, 0.325 m diameter, weight 1.8 tons in air) has successfully demonstrated that it is feasible to design free-fall vehicles which are capable of reaching terminal velocities of 45-50 m/s and embedding themselves up to thirty meters in clayey deep-sea sediments.  相似文献

In this paper, the three-dimensional water exit of a sphere with different vertical velocities is investigated numerically using the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). In this method, the liquid-gas two-phase flow is simplified as a single-phase free surface flow. To capture the free surface, a mass tracking algorithm is incorporated into the LBM. The gravity as a body force is introduced in the form of calculating the equilibrium distribution with an altered velocity, while the surface tension is neglected. Besides, the employed bounce-back boundary conditions are used for a moving sphere. What’s more, the Wall-Adapting Local Eddy (WALE) viscosity model is employed to capture the turbulent structures of the flow and stabilize the simulation. The accuracy of the numerical results is demonstrated through comparisons with the previous numerical and experimental results in the literature. The results show that the spike height is significantly influenced under the Froude number (Fr) below 4.12 and slightly affected under the Fr varying from 4.12 to 8.24. After the sphere exits water totally, the evolution of the free surface waterfall can be described as two phases and becomes more intense with the Froude number increasing. The non-uniform distribution of velocity results in the breaking of the free surface after the sphere completely exits the water. Moreover, the Reynolds number greatly affects the wake dynamics and hydrodynamics acting on the sphere when it moves beneath the water surface.  相似文献

When a high-speed body with cavity passes through water-air free surface and exits water, its mechanical environment and dynamic characteristics change significantly due to the great difference in density and viscosity between water and air. With focusing on this problem, the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method is applied to perform numerical calculation on the process of this vapor-liquid-gas flow during the water exit of a high-speed cylinder, with the Volume of Fraction (VOF) multiphase flow interface-capturing techniques and the overset grid technology. After the verification and validation of the CFD model through mesh convergence study and a water-entry experiment, cavity evolution and flow characteristics including pressure and velocity distribution during the water exit are analyzed. The effects of different initial velocities on the pressure distribution and drag characteristics of the cylinder are investigated. Calculated results show that the cavity collapse during water exit causes strong pressure fluctuation on the cylinder; when the cylinder exits water enveloped in a supercavity, the pressure distribution on its wall surface and surrounding water region is relatively uniform, and the drag changes gently, and thus the cylinder has good motion stability.

There is a great interest in a practical method of predicting the behaviour of a free-fall lifeboat, when dropped from an offshore platform or from a ship, in order to assess the risk of injury to the occupants. In particular, for those environmental conditions in which full-scale experiments are very difficult, one can benefit from numerical prediction. The hydrodynamic impact of the boat at water entry is a complex problem and makes the establishment of an analytical prediction method a challenging task. This paper is the second of two articles outlining a practical method for simulating the water entry of a free-fall lifeboat. The first article (Part I: impact theory) [Boef, W. J. C. (1992), Ocean Engng19, 119–138] reviewed the relevant literature on hydrodynamic impact and outlined the theoretical model for the water entry of a lifeboat. This paper discusses the implementation of the lifeboat launch model and a method for evaluating the effects of impacts on the occupants. The results of a comparison with full-scale tests and of a case study are also included.  相似文献

The existence of the heaving plates can improve the heaving motion performance of an offshore structure significantly by providing both extra added mass and damping. In the current research, numerical investigation is carried out on the hydrodynamic characteristics of both isolated square heaving plate and double square heaving plates with opening by an immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method. The effects on hydrodynamic performance of plates due to Keulegan-Carpenter(KC) number, frequency number, opening ratio, opening distribution and spacing of plates are examined. It is found that the heaving plates with optimized opening ratio can provide additional damping compared with the plates without opening. Better hydrodynamic characteristics of double plates can be obtained with the increase of plate spacing.  相似文献

In the consideration of safety it is required that packages containing radioactive wastes when dumped at sea should keep their integrity and retain their contents until they reach the seabed. Packages containing simulated radioactive wastes (non-radioactive) were tested by a free-fall method at depthsca. 4,300 m in an area for dumping industrial waste off Shikoku Island. Since the weight of the largest package was 4,300 kg, special attention was paid to the connection of a buoyancy system with mooring rope. Descent and ascent velocities of the free-fall system were calculated prior to the experiment. A free-fall experiment with an extremely heavy object, heavier than ever previously reported, was accomplished without trouble by using the free-fall system. Recovery of a camera, flash-light, and other components was successful in each of the three experiments. Successive photographing of the package during descent was made and its integrity was observed using the photographs taken by the recovered camera. The packages remained intact during descent and at least for a short time after arrival on the seabed.

During certification of free-fall lifeboats, it is necessary to infer the injury potential of the acceleration forces exerted on the occupants during water entry. Such an evaluation is required by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and most regulatory authorities. The dynamic response model and the square-root sum of the squares method are two criteria included in the IMO recommendation for testing lifeboats. At least one national authority requests use of the Hybrid III human surrogate when inferring injury potential. The purpose of this paper is to compare the potential for injury as indicated with the IMO criteria and that obtained through use of the Hybrid III manikin. The comparison is based on data obtained during prototype tests with full-scale free-fall lifeboats launched from heights of up to 30 m.  相似文献
