Volcanic explosion earthquakes accompanying explosive eruptions are viewed as representing an abrupt release of pressurized magma beneath a volcano through a vent. I examine the source mechanisms of explosion earthquakes assuming two extreme cases of magma property. When magma is assumed to be a perfect gas which migrates upward isentropically through a vent acting as a nozzle, the seismic source is expressed as a single force. On the other hand, when magma flow is assumed to be incompressible, an implosive source is dominant. Both source models predict that the seismic magnitude is proportional to the cross-sectional area of the vent. I investigate observed seismic magnitudes for different volcanoes based on data in published papers and reports. The results show that the seismic magnitude of the largest event for each volcano is essentially proportional to the cross-sectional area of the vent for vent radii ranging from 10 to 600 m. The consistency found between the theoretical prediction and the observed relation suggests that the vent area plays a substantial role in the magnitude of explosion earthquakes. I further estimate that initial pressures in the reservoir are of the order of a few MPa, with a one order of magnitude uncertainty based on the single force model. I also apply the implosive source model to the observed seismic magnitudes and estimate the product of bulk modulus of magma and flow velocity to be 1010–1011 J/m2 s.  相似文献

— I studied crustal deformation in the Kanto district, central Japan, based on continuous GPS data. Horizontal as well as vertical displacement rate demonstrate significant interaction between the landward Kanto block and the Philippine Sea plate. Although the subduction effect of the Pacific plate is not apparent, it is reasonable to consider the entire Kanto district is displaced westward due to the interaction with the Pacific plate. The GPS velocity data were inverted to estimate the slip deficit distribution on the Sagami Trough subduction zone. The result delineates a strongly coupled region on the plate interface, part of which corresponds to the 1923 Kanto earthquake. The strongly coupled region is located shallower than 20 km. In addition, the plate interaction is laterally heterogeneous even in the same depth range, implying thermal structure is not the only factor controlling interplate coupling. The GPS data also detected a silent earthquake event on the interface of the Philippine Sea slab east of the Boso Peninsula in the middle of May, 1996. The silent rupture propagated over a 50 km * 50 km wide area during about a week. The maximum slip was approximately 50 mm and the released seismic moment was 4.7*1018Nm (M w 6.4). There was a small seismicity triggered by this silent event. The silent slip was located in the peripheral of the strongly coupled area, suggesting that frictional properties and/or stress conditions are inhomogeneous on the plate boundary interface.  相似文献

通过主要剖面、平面、长纵剖面矿化元素的空间分布、矿石多元素相关分析得出 :Cu、Sn矿化既有关、又有分离 ,二者并非总是同时空富集 ,存在独立的锡矿体和铜矿体 ;总体上Sn矿化与Cu -Ag矿化关系密切、局部与Zn矿化有关 ;Ag矿化与Cu矿化、Pb -Zn矿化均有关 ;Cu与Pb、Zn的相关性差 ,空间上经常分离。从NWW到SEE矿化元素存在Ag -Cu -Sn -Pb -Zn混合矿化→Cu -Sn -Ag矿化→Pb -Zn -Ag矿化的纵向分布。成矿地球化学阶段可划分为 :Sn +As+Co、Cu +Sn +Ag±Au±Co、弱Ag +Cu±Au、Zn +Pb +Ag±Cu四个阶段。推断NE向断裂F2 -1及F2 可能是导矿构造。F1可能是另一个类似于F2 -1的导矿构造。  相似文献

An experiment was carried out to develop a technique to measure shear wave velocity simultaneously with the standard penetration test popular in soil engineering. In the standard penetration test an impact at the bottom of a borehole is produced by weight dropping and may be expected to generate seismic waves. A three-component geophone was set on the ground surface near the borehole and the waves generated were recorded with a magnetic recorder at successive depths of the penetration test. The predominance of the SV wave obtained with this simple method was assured by measurement of the particle orbit. Signal amplitudes decrease with depth and become less than the noise level at a certain depth. Therefore records from deeper sources must be processed to disclose the shear waves. Since waveforms of SV events generated by blows of the penetration test at a given depth are very similar, the signal to noise ratio would be expected to be improved by a stack of wave trains. A paste-up of the radial component after stacking was compared with that before stacking and a refinement was clearly recognized. A vertical distribution of shear wave velocity was obtained by reading the onset time at each depth. Shear wave velocities thus obtained were compared with N values from the standard penetration test and specific resistivities from electrical logging in the same borehole. The data were mutually consistent. This experiment showed that a convenient, precise shear wave velocity measurement can be conducted during the routine work of a standard penetration test.  相似文献

Three methods of geothermometry, currently used for spinel lherzolites, are refined based on new experiments on subsolidus phase equilibria of olivine, pyroxenes and spinel in CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 and natural rock systems at 16 kb and 1200 °C. Although quasi-thermodynamic modelling is employed, the methods are essentially based on the pyroxene solvus, alumina contents in clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene. Increasing alumina contents in pyroxenes reduce enstatite and diopside components in clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene, respectively. Thus, neglect of alumina in pyroxenes causes underestimates of temperatures by the solvus method.The three geothermometers were tested by applying them to homogeneous spinel lherzolites which were especially selected for this purpose. Coincidence of the three temperatures thus estimated gives confidence in the effectiveness of the geothermometers.They were also applied to spinel lherzolite nodules in basalts and intrusive lherzolites described in the literature. It was found that equilibration temperature of the nodules varies from 1000 °C to 1300 °C, i.e., temperatures somewhat higher than have been generally thought. In contrast to the nodules, the intrusive spinel lherzolites show extensive disequilibrium, which is probably due to retrogressive metamorphism suffered by the intrusives.  相似文献

Conclusions During the last ten years, aquaculture, especially mariculture has undergone remarkable expansion to counter-balance the gap between the supply and demand of fishery products in Japan. Its expansion has also been supported by the traditional preference of the Japanese people for seafood. Mariculture is now being forced to change its structure due to adverse economic circumstances such as the rise in the cost of energy, feeds and other materials for culture, low market prices, deterioration of environmental conditions, and many other factors. Before these constraints can be resolved, advanced scientific knowledge and technologies must be integrated to develop new types of aquaculture. Expansion of maricultural activities to more open-sea and off shore areas would be one route to follow. Technologies for the development of formulated diets not only for young but also for adults and larvae, establishment of feeding standards, prevention of epizootic diseases must support the establishment of modern aquaculture.The culture-based fisheries, or marine ranching, is becoming a subject for further development in Japan. Much research work has been conducted with a great degree of governmental support. Establishment of a net work of seedstock production farms has made it possible to carry out releasing experiments on a large scale. A newly integrated restoration system could be developed on the basis of these experiments, even though the profits resulting from the artificial restoration of stocks is not thouroughly verified at present. The commencement of a national scheme for culture-based fisheries would be a manifestation of the enthusiasm of the Japanese fish industry.  相似文献

The Main Central Thrust (MCT) is a tectono-metamorphic boundary between the Higher Himalayan crystallines (HHC) and Lesser Himalayan metasediments (LHS), reactivated in the Tertiary, but which had already formed as a collisional boundary in the Early Paleozoic. To investigate the nature of the MCT, we analyzed whole-rock Nd isotopic ratios of rocks from the MCT and surrounding zones in the Taplejung–Ilam area of far-eastern Nepal, Annapurna–Galyang area of central Nepal, and Maikot–Barekot area of western Nepal. We define the MCT zone as a ductile–brittle shear zone between the upper MCT (UMCT) and lower MCT (LMCT). The protoliths of the MCT zone may provide critical constraints on the tectonic evolution of the Himalaya. The LHS is lithostratigraphically divided into the upper and lower units. In the Taplejung–Ilam area, different lithologic units and their εNd (0) values are as follows; HHC (− 10.0 to − 18.1), MCT zone (− 18.5 to − 26.2), upper LHS unit (− 17.2), and lower LHS unit (− 22.0 to − 26.9). There is a distinct gap in the εNd (0) values across the UMCT except for the southern frontal edge of the Ilam nappe. In the Annapurna–Galyang and Maikot–Barekot areas, different lithologic units and their εNd (0) values are as follows; HHC (− 13.9 to − 17.7), MCT zone (− 23.8 to − 26.2 except for an outlier of − 12.4), upper LHS unit (− 15.6 to − 26.8), and lower LHS unit (− 24.9 to − 26.8). These isotopic data clearly distinguish the lower LHS unit from the HHC. Combining these data with the previously published data, the lowest εNd (0) value in the HHC is − 19.9. We regard rocks with εNd (0) values below − 20.0 as the LHS. In contrast, rocks with those above − 19.9 are not always the HHC, and some parts of them may belong to the LHS due to the overlapping Nd isotopic ratio between the HHC and LHS. Most rocks of the MCT zone have Nd isotopic ratios similar to those of the LHS, but very different from those of the HHC. The spatial patterns in the distribution of εNd (0) value around the UMCT suggest no substantial structural mixing of the HHC and LHS during the UMCT activities in the Tertiary. A discontinuity in the spatial distribution of εNd (0) values is laterally continuous along the UMCT throughout the Himalayas. These facts support the theory that the UMCT was originally a material boundary between the HHC and LHS, suggesting the MCT zone was mainly developed with undertaking a role of sliding planes during overthrusting of the HHC in the Tertiary.  相似文献

Tunnel excavation at Äspö Island, Sweden, has caused severe groundwater disturbance, gradually extending deeper into the tunnel as present-day Baltic seawater intrudes through fractures connecting to the surface. However, the paleo-hydrogeochemical conditions have remained in the deep highly saline waters that have avoided mixing. A correlation has been observed between dissolved 4He concentration and Cl ion concentration, measured every two years from 1995 to 2001 at Äspö. Groundwater mixing conditions can be examined by the correlations between 1/Cl, 36Cl/Cl, and 3H concentrations. Subsurface production is responsible for the majority of the 36Cl and excess dissolved 4He of interstitial groundwater in fractures. The secular equilibrium ratio of 36Cl/Cl in rock was theoretically estimated to be (5.05 ± 0.82) × 10−14 based on the neutron flux intensity, a value comparable to the measured 36Cl/Cl ratio in rock and groundwater. The degassing crustal 4He flux was estimated to be 2.9 × 10−8  1.3 × 10−6 (ccSTP/cm2a) using the HTO diffusion coefficient for the Äspö diorite. The 4He accumulation rate ranges from 6.8 × 10−10 (for the in situ accumulation rate) to 7.0 × 10−9 (ccSTP/(gwater · a) considering both 4He in situ production and the degassing flux, assuming 4He is accumulated constantly in groundwater. By comparing the subsurface 36Cl increase with 4He concentrations in groundwater, the 4He accumulation rate was determined from data for groundwater arriving at the secular equilibrium of 36Cl/Cl. The 4He accumulation rate was found to be (1.83 ± 0.72) × 10−8 ccSTP/(gwater · a) without determining the magnitude of degassing 4He flux.  相似文献

Three submarine hydrothermal sites (Snail, Y and Pika sites) in the southern Mariana area were investigated to clarify the geochemical difference between off-axis and on-axis submarine hydrothermal activities and volcanic rocks. The Snail and Y sites are located on the axis of the spreading ridge, and the Pika site is located on the off-axis region. Low-temperature venting of submarine hydrothermal fluids was observed at the Snail and Y sites. High-temperature black smoker activities were found at the Pika site. For further geochemical study, sulfide chimneys and mounds were collected from each site by manned submersible Shinkai 6500 . Basement short drill cores of volcanic rocks and sulfides were also obtained from the Snail and Pika sites using a multi-coring system. All drilled pillow lavas were tholeiitic andesite with a narrow range of chemical variation. Significant enrichments of Rb, Ba and Th were absent in both on-axis (Y and Snail sites) and off-axis (Pika site) samples, suggesting the least incorporation of subducting sediments to the magmatic system. Concentrations of Au and Ag in the sulfide chimney were within the range of massive sulfides at the mid-ocean ridge rather than typical arc-type massive sulfides. It is found that sulfur isotope compositions of sulfides were different between the on-axis and off-axis samples: on-axis samples had heavy δ34S (+2.9–+8.7‰) and off-axis samples (–0.3 to +3.8‰) were similar to the local magmatic value. Such a regional difference probably results from changes of deep hydrothermal processes during the water–rock interaction rather than differences in tectonic settings.  相似文献
