The existence of a valuable historical heritage of the Medieval age in Bologna has motivated a deeper study on the seismic behaviour of the Asinelli Tower, which, beyond being the town symbol, has a structural configuration prone to seismic damage. Accordingly, in the present paper, the seismicity of Bologna is reviewed and a synthesis of the damage observed in the urban area, based on an accurate historical research, is given, with the objective of evaluating the behavior of the Asinelli Tower within the framework of the effects localized in the municipality. An assessment of the tower's stability with respect to compatible seismic events, at least qualitatively, with the region seismicity is then carried out by means of a non-linear dynamic analysis on a simplified model.  相似文献

A singularly complete record exists for the eruptive activity of Etna volcano. The time series of occurrence of flank eruptions in the period 1600–1980, in which the record is presumably complete, is found to follow a stationary Poisson process. A revision of the available data shows that eruption durations are rather well correlated with the estimates of the volume of lava flows. This implies that the magnitude of an eruption can be defined directly by its duration. Extreme value statistics are then applied to the time series, using duration as a dependent variable. The probability of occurrence of a very long (300 days) eruption is greater than 50% only in time intervals of the order of 50 years. The correlation found between duration and total output also allows estimation of the probability of occurrence of a major event which exceeds a given duration and total flow of lava. The composite probabilities do not differ considerably from the pure ones. Paralleling a well established application to seismic events, extreme value theory can be profitably used in volcanic risk estimates, provided that appropriate account is also taken of all other variables.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to provide some constrains on the time behavior of earthquake generation mechanism, through the usage of a non-parametric statistics that leads up to the empirical estimation of the hazard function. The results indicate that the most characterizing temporal feature for large (M 7.0+) worldwide shallow earthquake occurrence is a clustering lasting few years, indicating that the probability of earthquake occurrence is higher immediately after the occurrence of an event. After that, the process becomes almost time independent, as in a Poisson process. Remarkably, this time clustering is very similar to what previously found for different spatio-magnitude windows, and it does not seem to depend on the tectonic style of the region. This may support the hypothesis of an universal law for earthquake occurrence.  相似文献

We derive a global, three-dimensional tomographic model of horizontally and vertically polarized shear velocities in the upper mantle. The model is based on a recently updated global database of Love- and Rayleigh-wave fundamental-mode phase-anomaly observations, with a good global coverage and a particularly dense coverage over Europe and the Mediterranean basin (broadband stations from the Swiss and German seismic networks). The model parameterization is accordingly finer within this region than over the rest of the globe. The large-scale, global structure of our model is very well correlated with that of earlier shear-velocity tomography models, based both on body- and surface-wave observations. At the regional scale, within the region of interest, correlation is complicated by the different resolution limits associated to different databases (surface waves, compressional waves, shear waves), and, accordingly, to different models; while a certain agreement appears to exist for what concerns the grand tectonic features in the area, heterogeneities of smaller scale are less robustly determined. Our new model is only one step towards the identification of a consensus model of European/Mediterranean upper-mantle structure: on the basis of the findings discussed here, we expect that important improvements will soon result from the combination, in new tomographic inversions, of fundamental-mode phase-anomaly data like ours with observations of surface-wave overtones, of body-wave travel times, of ambient “noise”, and by accounting for an a-priori model of crustal structure more highly resolved than the one employed here.  相似文献

The 2001 and 2002–2003 flank eruptions on Mount Etna (Italy) were characterized by intense explosive activity which led to the formation of two large monogenetic scoria cones (one from each eruption) on the upper southern flank of the volcano. Continuous monitoring of Etna, especially during flank eruptions, has provided detailed information on the growth of these cones. They differ in genesis, shape, and size. A set of high resolution (1 m) digital elevation models (DEMs) derived from light detection and ranging (LIDAR) data collected during four different surveys (2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007) has been used to map morphology and to extract the morphometric parameters of the scoria cones. By comparing LIDAR-derived DEMs with a pre-eruption (1998) 10 m DEM, the volume of the two scoria cones was calculated for the first time. Comparison of the LIDAR-derived DEMs revealed in unprecedented detail morphological changes during scoria cone degradation. In particular, the morphologically more exposed and structurally weaker 2002–2003 cone was eroded rapidly during the first few years after its emplacement mainly due to gravitational instability of slopes and wind erosion.  相似文献

Summary. The long wavelength radiation patterns of P - and S -waves are determined for an elastic prestressed earth model. The prestress is treated as a perturbation of an isotropic medium. Non-zero first-order corrections are found to the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the deviatoric seismic moment tensor. The radiation pattern given by a purely tangential dislocation is equivalent to a double couple contaminated by a dipolar term linear in the perturbation.  相似文献

Summary. A microplate is modelled as an elastic plate with two long strike-slip boundaries, lying over a Maxwell-type viscoelastic asthenosphere. The microplate is subjected to a constant and uniform shear strain rate by the opposite motions of two adjoining larger plates. After the occurrence of an earthquake at one of the microplate boundaries, the time evolution of shear stress at the other boundary is studied. It is found that stress build-up at the second boundary is delayed due to stress diffusion governed by the asthenosphere relaxation. Earthquake occurrence at this latter boundary would be delayed depending upon both the microplate width and the ratio between the Maxwell relaxation time of the asthenosphere and a characteristic time required for tectonic strain to recover rupture conditions. It turns out that the parameters which determine the occurrence of seismic activity along the microplate boundaries are more strictly constrained in the presence of a viscoelastic asthenosphere than in the case of an elastic half-pace model.  相似文献

Summary. It is well-known that the chemical environment and the thermodynamical conditions play a fundamental role in the physics of the fracture properties of solids which in turn appear relevant in the understanding of the earthquake mechanism and related precursory phenomena. We designed and built an experimental apparatus capable of measuring the fracture velocities with control of the physical and chemical environment as well as of the applied stress. The apparatus consists of a chamber where both the total pressure and the partial pressure of gases can be controlled. The stress is applied in mode I (tension) configuration. The crack is detected optically on the surface of the sample with an ordinary microscope and the velocity of propagation is directly measured by the increase in length in the elapsed time. The very good stability of the system over very long periods allows us to measure crack velocities down to 10−12 ms−1. The propagation under such low-velocity regimes appears interesting from a geological standpoint since it implies extremely low stress values, which are generally assumed to have no effect on crustal rocks. The first results obtained will be discussed, with particular regard to the apparent dramatic influence of the partial pressure of water vapour in the crack propagation velocity.  相似文献
