Contributions of slab fluid and sediment melt components to magmatism in the Mariana Arc–Trough system: Evidence from geochemical compositions and Sr,Nd, and noble gas isotope systematics 下载免费PDF全文

This study presents new major and trace element, mineral, and Sr, Nd, and noble gas isotope geochemical analyses of basalts, gabbro, and clinopyroxenite from the Mariana Arc (Central Islands and Southern Seamount provinces) including the forearc, and the Mariana Trough (Central Graben and Spreading Ridge). Mantle source compositions beneath the Mariana Arc and the Mariana Trough indicate a mantle source that is depleted in high field strength elements relative to MORB (mid‐oceanic ridge basalt). Samples from the Mariana Arc, characterized by high ratios of Ba/Th, U/Th, 84Kr/4He and 132Xe/4He, are explained by addition of fluid from the subducted slab to the mantle wedge. Correlations of noble gas data, as well as large ion lithophile elements, indicate that heavy noble gases (Ar, Kr, and Xe) provide evidence for fluid fluxing into the mantle wedge. On the other hand, major elements and Sr, Nd, He, and Ne isotopic data of basalts from the Mariana Trough are geochemically indistinguishable from MORB. Correlations of 3He/4He and 40Ar/36Ar in the Mariana Trough samples are explained by mixing between MORB and atmosphere. One sample from the Central Graben indicates extreme enrichment in 20Ne/22Ne and 21Ne/22Ne, suggesting incorporation of solar‐type Ne in the magma source. Excess 129Xe is also observed in this sample suggesting primordial noble gases in the mantle source. The Mariana Trough basalts indicate that both fluid and sediment components contributed to the basalts, with slab‐derived fluids dominating beneath the Spreading Ridge, and that sediment melts, characterized by high La/Sm and relatively low U/Th and Zr/Nb, dominate in the source region of basalts from the Central Graben. 相似文献

We examined the geochemical characteristics and temporal changes of deposits associated with the 2011 Tohoku‐oki tsunami. Stable carbon isotope ratios, biomarkers, and water‐leachable ions were measured in a sandy tsunami deposit and associated soils sampled at Hasunuma, Kujukuri coastal plain, Japan, in 2011 and 2014. At this site, the 2011 tsunami formed a 10–30 cm ‐thick layer of very fine to medium sand. The tsunami deposit was organic‐poor, and no samples contained any detectable biomarkers of either terrigenous or marine origin. In the underlying soil, we identified hydrocarbons and sterols derived from terrestrial plants, but detected no biomarkers of marine origin. In the samples collected in 2011, concentrations of tsunami‐derived water‐leachable ions were highest in the soil immediately beneath the tsunami deposit and then decreased gradually with depth. Because of its finer texture and higher organic content, the soil has a higher water‐holding capacity than the sandy tsunami deposit. This distribution suggests that ions derived from the tsunami quickly penetrated the sand layer and became concentrated in the underlying soil. In the samples collected in 2014, concentrations of water‐leachable ions were very low in both soil and sand. We attribute the decrease in ion concentrations to post‐tsunami rainfall, seepage, and seasonal changes in groundwater level. Although water‐leachable ions derived from seawater were concentrated in the soil beneath the tsunami deposit following the tsunami inundation, they were not retained for more than a few years. To elucidate the behavior of geochemical characteristics associated with tsunamis, further research on organic‐rich muddy deposits (muddy tsunami deposits and soils beneath sandy tsunami deposits) as well as sandy tsunami deposits is required. 相似文献

Late Quaternary foraminifera assemblages have been examined in two sediment cores (MD179‐3296 and MD179‐3317) from cold seep areas in the eastern margin of the Japan Sea, off Joetsu, Niigata Prefecture. Foraminifera assemblages in core MD179‐3296, which was located at the center of a pockmark on the Umitake Spur, show no evidence of methane flux and, especially in its upper portion, share the same paleo‐environmental history as other free gas hydrate areas of the Japan Sea. In comparison, in the core MD179‐3317 at the center of a pockmark at Joetsu Knoll, foraminiferal distributions were strongly affected by methane activities and, in the main part of the core, were deposited under local conditions. Three horizons were identified in this core, which are characterized by the high abundance value of Thalmannammina parkerae and might be related to methane flux due to sea level fall especially through late marine isotope stage (MIS) 3 and MIS 2. 相似文献

We present the results of observational campaigns of asteroids performed at Asiago Station of Padova Astronomical Observatory and at M.G. Fracastoro Station of Catania Astrophysical Observatory, as part of the large research programme on Solar System minor bodies undertaken since 1979 at the Physics and Astronomy Department of Catania University. Photometric observations of six Main-Belt asteroids (27 <em>Euterpeem>, 173 <em>Inoem>, 182 <em>Elsaem>, 539 <em>Paminaem>, 849 <em>Araem>, and 984 <em>Gretiaem>), one Hungaria (1727 <em>Metteem>), and two Near-Earth Objects (3199 <em>Nefertitiem> and 2004 <em>UEem>) are reported. The first determination of the synodic rotational period of 2004 <em>UEem> was obtained. For 182 <em>Elsaem> and 1727 <em>Metteem> the derived synodic period of 80.23±0.08 and eight="13" border="0" style="vertical-align:bottom" width="105" alt="View the MathML source" title="View the MathML source" src="http://ars.sciencedirect.com/content/image/1-s2.0-S0032063308003139-si52.gif">, respectively, represents a significant improvement on the previously published values. Despite their small size, in both area and population, many different languages are spoken by residents of the small island developing states (SIDS). Most of these languages are used by very few people. With one exception, the remaining forty-nine SIDS have one or more official languages. Slightly over 62 percent of the eighty official languages are those of former colonial rulers. Of the total of 1,500 languages, the Weaver’s minimum positive deviation method identified only 106 as dominant languages. These languages are spoken by more than 96 percent of the population in the SIDS. The data further show that twenty-eight of the fifty SIDS are monolingual and the remaining twenty-two are either bilingual or multilingual. Surprisingly, in many monolingual SIDS, the official language is not the dominant language. The dominant languages of these nations were first categorized as monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual and then were analyzed by their location, area, and population size. No statistically significant variation was found between them. Reasons for these conditions are explained, and future research direction is provided. Seafloor images of coarse‐grained submarine channel–levée systems commonly reveal complex braid‐plain patterns of low‐amplitude bedforms and zones of apparent bypass; however, mechanisms of channel evolution and the resultant channel‐fill architecture are poorly understood. At Playa Esqueleto the lateral relationships between various elements of a deep‐marine slope channel system are well‐exposed. Specifically, the transition from gravel‐dominated axial thalwegs to laterally persistent marginal sandstones and isolated gravel‐filled scours is revealed. Marginal sandstones pass into a monotonous thin‐bedded succession which built to form relatively low‐relief levées bounding the channel belt; in turn, the levées onlap the canyon walls. Three orders of confinement were important during the evolution of the channel system: (i) first‐order confinement was provided by the erosional canyon which confined the entire system; (ii) confined levées built of turbidite sandstones and mudstones formed the second‐order confinement, and it is demonstrated that these built from overspill at thalweg margins; and (iii) third‐order confinement describes the erosional confinement of coarse‐grained thalwegs and scours. Finer‐grained sediment was transported in suspension and largely was unaffected by topography at the scale of individual thalwegs. Facies and clast analyses of conglomerate overlying channel‐marginal scours reveal that they were deposited by composite gravity flows, which were non‐cohesive, grain‐dominant debris flows with more fluidal cores. These flows were capable of basal erosion but were strongly depositional; frictional freezing at flow margins built gravel levées, while the core maintained a more fluidal transport regime. The resultant architecture consists of matrix‐rich, poorly sorted levées bounding better‐sorted, traction‐dominated cores. The planform geometry is interpreted to have consisted of a low‐sinuosity gravel braid‐plain built by accretion around mid‐channel and bank‐attached bars. This part of the system may be analogous to fluvial systems; however, the finer‐grained sediment load formed thick suspension clouds, probably several orders of magnitude thicker than the relief of braid‐plain topography and therefore controlled by the levées and canyon wall confinement. 相似文献

黄山铜镍硫化物矿床镁铁.超镁铁质岩体岩相发育良好,主要包括橄榄岩、辉石岩、辉长岩和闪长岩,橄榄岩中部分橄榄石包含有硫化物珠滴。对该岩体不同岩相进行了主元素、微量元素、铂族元素和单矿物的分析,结果表明,不同类型岩石的化学组成受橄榄石、辉石和斜长石结晶分异作用的控制。微量元素和稀土元素具有相似的分布模式,(La/Yb)N介于1.14—3.65之间,明显亏损Nb和Ta,富集Sr。含矿岩石Cu/Pd和Ti/Pd比值大于原生地幔岩浆。上述结果揭示黄山镁铁-超镁铁质岩体不同岩性的岩石具有不同的主元素和微量元素特征,但母岩浆来自同一源区。根据橄榄石的F0值和全岩的主要氧化物组成估算出母岩浆为高镁(MgO约为15%)玄武岩岩浆,在岩浆作用过程中地壳富硅组分的混染是导致硫化物熔离的主要机制。 相似文献

Abstract The Mianlüe suture extends from Derni‐Nanping‐Pipasi‐Kangxian to the Lüeyang‐Mianxian area, then traverses the Bashan arcuate structure eastward to the Huashan region, and finally to the Qingshuihe area of the southern Dabie Mountains. From east to west, with a length of over 1500 km, the ophiolitic melangé associations are distributed discontinuously along the suture. The rock assemblages include ophiolite, island‐arc and oceanic island rock series, indicating that there existed a suture zone and a vanished paleo‐ocean basin. The Mianlüe paleo‐ocean basin experienced its main expansion and formation process during the Carboniferous‐Permian and closed totally in the Triassic. It belongs to the northern branch of the eastern paleotethys, separated from the northern margin of the Yangtze block under the paleotethys mantle dynamic system. 相似文献

This paper reviews the history (TIMS, hot‐SIMS, MC‐ICP‐MS), significance, geochemical behaviour and current uncertainties (λ176 Lu, Hf‐Nd Bulk Silicate Earth) surrounding the Lu‐Hf isotope system, and thus marks two decades of its application to geochemical problems. An appendix further presents (a) improvements to the original chemistry protocol of Blichert‐Toft et al. (1997) for application to Mg‐rich samples and (b) a compilation of previously published and new Hf isotope determinations by MC‐ICP‐MS for a set of international rock reference materials. Prior to the advent of multiple‐collector plasma source mass spectrometry (MC‐ICP‐MS), routine analysis of the Lu‐Hf isotope system developed only slowly because of the extreme difficulty of measuring Hf isotope compositions with thermal ionisation mass spectrometry, caused by the very high first ionisation potential of Hf. However, Hf isotope compositions can be measured relatively easily using MC‐ICP‐MS and this new technique now provides reproducible measurements at high precision regardless of the matrix from which Hf is separated. Of the commonly used long‐lived radiogenic isotope systems, only the Sm‐Nd and Lu‐Hf isotope systems are unaffected by parent/daughter fractionations related to volatile nebular processes and core formation. While other systems (Rb‐Sr, U‐Th‐Pb, Re‐Os) may also be used to investigate the chemical evolution of the Earth, Moon, Mars and parent bodies of differentiated meteorites, the larger uncertainties in their bulk chemical and isotopic values limit their application to determine geochemical budgets and assess planetary mantle‐crust evolution. In the study of garnet‐bearing rocks, both for dating purposes and as an isotopic tracer for source provenance and mantle processes, the Lu‐Hf isotope system likewise is of major interest because of the high partition coefficient of Lu compared to Hf for garnet with respect to other minerals. Furthermore, the larger Lu/Hf fractionation compared to Sm/Nd during melting beneath ridges produces proportionally higher Lu/Hf in the residue and faster in‐growth of a radiogenic Hf isotopic signature (compared to Nd), which may help shed light on the dynamics of mantle melting. While the chemistry protocol and mass spectrometric technique for high‐precision Lu‐Hf isotope analysis have been resolved in satisfactory ways over the past five years, more accurate determination of the decay constant for 176 Lu, at present known with a precision of only about 4%, still needs to be completed and a consensus reached on which value to use for future Lu‐Hf isotope studies. Although the current combined Lu‐Hf and Sm‐Nd Bulk Silicate Earth parameters are plagued by possible incompatibilities in chondrite selection and potential interlaboratory biases, a more accurate set of values may not be readily established owing to heterogeneities in the isotopic composition of chondrites that far exceed present analytical accuracy. 相似文献
