Photometers on the ISIS-II spacecraft provide a view of the atomic oxygen 5577 and 6300 Å emissions and the N2+ 3914 A? emission detected as dayside aurora in the magnetospheric cleft region. The 6300 Å emission forms a continuous and permanent band across the noon sector, at about 78° invariant latitude, with a defined region of maximum intensity that is never less than 2kR (uncorrected for albedo), and is centred near magnetic noon. There are significant differences in the intensity patterns on either side of noon and their responses to geomagnetic activity. Discrete 3914 Å auroral forms appear within this region, at preferred locations that cannot be precisely specified, but which tend to the poleward edge of the 6300 Å emission in the evening, and the equatorward edge in the morning where the difference between the two emissions is greatest. It is concluded that the discrete auroras observed by all-sky cameras in the day sector do follow the 6300 Å emission through the cleft region, though a definite cleft boundary is not defined. Substantial 6300 Å emission having a peak intensity near noon is also seen in the low latitude “outer auroral belt”, while the diffuse 3914 Å emission tends to show a relative minimum near noon. On the morning side the 3914 Å intensity is displaced to lower latitude and earlier local times, compared to the 6300 Å emission.  相似文献

A regional fluid inclusion study of Cu-Au (+Zn-Pb) mineralisation in the Harlech Dome area, North Wales, gives support to the concept of two distinct metallogenic episodes. The inclusion assemblages associated with the porphyry copper mineralisation at Coed-y-Brenin are consistent with a genetic model of early potassic-propylitic alteration overprinted by later phyllic alteration. High salinity fluids, normally characteristic of potassic alteration, are confined to the host rock quartz. The meteoric/hydrothermal system is closely linked to the emplacement of late-Cambrian diorites. Integrated fluid inclusion and mineralogical studies of the Gold-belt veins suggest that the mineralising fluids were probably dehydration waters released from weakly metamorphosed Cambrian and perhaps Precambrian sediments during hydraulic fracturing in a tensional zone at the close of the Caledonian orogeny. Localisation of economic concentrations of gold in veins at the level of the Clogau Formation is ascribed to a destabilisation of metal complexes caused by a change in fluid buffering from a pyrite-magnetite assemblage in the Lower Cambrian sediments to a pyrite-pyrrhotite-graphite assemblage in the Upper Cambrian sediments. Veining associated with the Coed-y-Brenin porphyry copper deposit and related breccia pipes can be distinguished from the copper-gold veins of the coextensive Dolgellau Gold-belt by the presence in the former of inclusions notably richer in CO2. Furthermore the Gold-belt fluids have a distinctive low CO2/CH4+N2+H2 ratio.  相似文献

The city of Lincoln draws water from a well field along the banks of the Platte River in east-central Nebraska. We have been able to follow the infusion of atrazine into this well field under induced recharge. Samples of water from the river, several monitoring wells and a production well were analyzed by GC/MS and solid phase extraction and found to change in concentration over the range 0.1 and 5.0 ppb of atrazine through the spring, summer, and fall 1989. Increases in the concentration of atrazine relating to precipitation events in the Platte River Basin were observable in the well water samples and ultimately in Lincoln municipal tap water. Atrazine from the river was seen to move via induced recharge and into well field ground water and away from the river at an observable rate. The concentration of atrazine in the river is dependent upon time of year and precipitation in the river basin.  相似文献

A fluid inclusion investigation of the Carrock Fell tungsten deposit, Northern England, confirms that the quartz-wolframite-scheelite veins associated with the Caledonian Skiddaw Granite are almost exclusively related to an exocontact hydrothermal system developed at the margin of a local cupola. Fluid circulation, as defined by the spatial variation in temperature and H2O/CO2 ratios for inclusions in vein quartz, reveals a strong structural control. The zone of maximum flow, which extends 0–400 m out from the granite contact, is characterised by high H2O/CO2 ratios and corresponds closely with the known distribution of high-grade oreshoots. Based on the fluid inclusion gas signature for the Carrock Fell deposit, a distinction can be made between potentially tungstaniferous quartz veins and those related to Cu-Pb-Zn deposits in the absence of diagnostic ore minerals. Also, a regional survey of quartz veins in the Lake District suggests that at several localities the fluids have a close affinity with those at Carrock Fell. This is interpreted as the high-level, distal expression of tungsten mineralisation at depth. Evidence for similar mineralisation elsewhere in the British Caledonides favours those granites in the paratectonic zones of Ireland and southern Scotland.  相似文献

Temperature observations at 20–90 km height and 5–15°N during the winter of 1992–1993, 1993–1994 and 2003–2004, from the Wind Imaging Interferometer (WINDII) and Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) experiments on the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) satellite and the Sounding the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) experiment on the Thermosphere, Ionosphere, Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite are analyzed together with MF radar winds and UK Meteorological Office (UKMO) assimilated fields. Mesospheric cooling is observed at the time of stratospheric warming at the tropics correlative with stratospheric warming events at middle and high latitudes. Planetary waves m=1 with periods of 4–5, 6–8, 10 and 12–18 days are found to dominate the period. Westward 7- and 16-day waves at the tropics appear enhanced by stationary planetary waves during sudden stratospheric warming events.  相似文献

The effect of changes in zonal and meridional atmospheric moisture transports on Atlantic overturning is investigated. Zonal transports are considered in terms of net moisture export from the Atlantic sector. Meridional transports are related to the vigour of the global hydrological cycle. The equilibrium thermohaline circulation (THC) simulated with an efficient climate model is strongly dependent on two key parameters that control these transports: an anomaly in the specified Atlantic–Pacific moisture flux (Fa) and atmospheric moisture diffusivity (Kq). In a large ensemble of spinup experiments, the values of Fa and Kq are varied by small increments across wide ranges, to identify sharp transitions of equilibrium THC strength in a 2-parameter space (between Conveyor On and Off states). Final states from this ensemble of simulations are then used as the initial states for further such ensembles. Large differences in THC strength between ensembles, for identical combinations of Fa and Kq, reveal the co-existence of two stable THC states (Conveyor On and Off)—i.e. a bistable regime. In further sensitivity experiments, the model is forced with small, temporary freshwater perturbations to the mid-latitude North Atlantic, to establish the minimum perturbation necessary for irreversible THC collapse in this bistable regime. A threshold is identified in terms of the forcing duration required. The model THC, in a Conveyor On state, irreversibly collapses to a Conveyor Off state under additional freshwater forcing of just 0.1 Sv applied for around 100 years. The irreversible collapse is primarily due to a positive feedback associated with suppressed convection and reduced surface heat loss in the sinking region. Increased atmosphere-to-ocean freshwater flux, under a collapsed Conveyor, plays a secondary role.  相似文献

Kick 'em Jenny is the only known currently active submarine volcano in the Lesser Antilles. The volcano has erupted at least 10 times since first being discovered in 1939 and the summit has shoaled from a depth of 232 m in 1962 to its present-day depth of 150 m. Kick 'em Jenny is located in a province of explosive volcanism, has a known history of explosive eruptions and erupts magma of an explosive type. Future eruptions are likely to become increasingly more violent as the effect of the overlying water pressure becomes less. A preliminary study (Smith and Shepherd, 1993) suggests that Kick 'em Jenny is a prime candidate for tsunamigenic eruptions on a potentially hazardous scale, possibly affecting the whole of the eastern Caribbean region.The classic approach to problems of water waves generated by sudden disturbances of the free surface makes use of the Cauchy-Poisson-Lamb theory. A large number of theoretical developments to this theory have been made for specific forms of surface disturbance. A development by Unoki and Nakano (1953a, b) considers both two- and three-dimensional Cauchy-Poisson waves generated by finite initial elevations and impulses applied to a free surface of infinitely deep water. Unoki and Nakano's results compared well to the wave systems recorded following submarine eruptions of the Myojinsho Reef volcano in 1952–53.Given the similarity of the two situations, Unoki and Nakano's theory is applied to Kick 'em Jenny to provide estimates of potential Cauchy-Poisson wave heights throughout the eastern Caribbean for a range of eruption magnitudes. The results show that, although the waves generated are unlikely to pose much of a threat to the eastern Caribbean as a whole, they should be considered a hazard to the islands immediately adjacent to the volcano including Grenada, the Grenadines, and St Vincent.  相似文献

We have used the Grid ENabled Integrated Earth system modelling (GENIE) framework to undertake a systematic search for bi-stability of the ocean thermohaline circulation (THC) for different surface grids and resolutions of 3-D ocean (GOLDSTEIN) under a 3-D dynamical atmosphere model (IGCM). A total of 407,000 years were simulated over a three month period using Grid computing. We find bi-stability of the THC despite significant, quasi-periodic variability in its strength driven by variability in the dynamical atmosphere. The position and width of the hysteresis loop depends on the choice of surface grid (longitude-latitude or equal area), but is less sensitive to changes in ocean resolution. For the same ocean resolution, the region of bi-stability is broader with the IGCM than with a simple energy-moisture balance atmosphere model (EMBM). Feedbacks involving both ocean and atmospheric dynamics are found to promote THC bi-stability. THC switch-off leads to increased import of freshwater at the southern boundary of the Atlantic associated with meridional overturning circulation. This is counteracted by decreased freshwater import associated with gyre and diffusive transports. However, these are localised such that the density gradient between North and South is reduced tending to maintain the THC off state. THC switch-off can also generate net atmospheric freshwater input to the Atlantic that tends to maintain the off state. The ocean feedbacks are present in all resolutions, across most of the bi-stable region, whereas the atmosphere feedback is strongest in the longitude–latitude grid and around the transition where the THC off state is disappearing. Here the net oceanic freshwater import due to the overturning mode weakens, promoting THC switch-on, but the atmosphere counteracts this by increasing net freshwater input. This increases the extent of THC bi-stability in this version of the model.
