Latitudinal distributions of narrow-band 5 kHz hisses have been statistically obtained by using VLF electric field data received from the ISIS-1 and -2 at Syowa station, Antartica and Kashima station, Japan, in order to study an origin of the narrow-band 5 kHz hisses which are often observed on the ground in mid- and low-latitudes. The result shows that the narrow-band 5 kHz hiss occurs most frequently at geomagnetically invariant latitudes from 55° to 63°, that are roughly the plasmapause latitudes at various geomagnetic activities, both in the northern and southern hemispheres.The narrow-band 5 kHz hiss seems to be generated by the cyclotron instabilities of several keV to a few ten keV electrons for the most feasible electron density of 10 cm?3?103 cm?3 in the vicinity of the equatorial plasmapause since the hotter electrons with energy of 10–100 keV are dominant just outside the plasmapause. This will be the origin of the narrow-band 5 kHz hiss observed frequently in mid- and low-latitudes.  相似文献

Abstract The upper Mesozoic Tetori Group contains numerous fossils of plants and marine and non‐marine animals. The group has the potential to provide key information to improve our understanding of the Middle Jurassic to Early Cretaceous biota of East Asia. However, the depositional age of the Tetori Group remains uncertain, and without good age constraints, accurate correlation with other areas is very difficult. As a first step in obtaining reliable ages for the formations within the Tetori Group, we used laser ablation‐inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry to measure the U–Pb ages of zircons collected from tuff beds in the Shokawa district, Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, central Japan. The youngest reliable U–Pb ages from the tuff beds of the Ushimaru, Mitarai and Okurodani Formations are 130.2 ± 1.7, 129.8 ± 1.0 and 117.5 ± 0.7 Ma, respectively (errors represent 2 SE). These results indicate that the entire Tetori Group in the Shokawa district, which was previously believed to be correlated to the Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous, is in fact correlated to the Lower Cretaceous. The maximum ages of the Ushimaru, Mitarai and Okurodani Formations are late Hauterivian to Barremian, late Hauterivian to Barremian and Barremian to Aptian, respectively.  相似文献

Subsurface redox fronts control the mobilization and fixation of many trace elements, including potential pollutants such as certain radionuclides. Any safety assessment for a deep geological repository for radioactive wastes needs to take into account adequately the long-term redox processes in the geosphere surrounding the repository. To build confidence in understanding these processes, a redox front in a reduced siliceous sedimentary rock distributed in an uplifting area in Japan has been studied in detail. Geochemical analyses show increased concentrations of Fe and trace elements, including rare earth elements (REEs), at the redox front, even though concentrations of reduced rock matrix constituents show little change. Detailed SEM observations revealed that fossilized microorganisms composed of amorphous granules made exclusively of Fe and Si occur in the rock’s pore space. Microbial 16S rDNA analysis suggests that there is presently a zonation of different bacterial groups within the redox band, and bacterial zonation played an important role in the concentration of Fe-oxyhydroxides at the redox front. These water–rock–microbe interactions can be considered analogous to the processes occurring in the redox fronts that would develop around geological repositories for radioactive waste. Once formed, the Fe-oxyhydroxides within such a front would be preserved even after reducing conditions resume following repository closure.  相似文献

Asymmetric rifting of the northern Mariana Trough   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The evolution of rifting in the northern Mariana Trough was studied, based on single-channel seismic reflection profiles and heat flow. The rift showed structural asymmetry. The northernmost part of the Mariana Trough at 24°N, just south of Minami-Iwojima Island, is now in an incipient rifting stage and shows a half-graben structure. The arc crust just behind the volcanic front is cut by a few major east-dipping normal faults. The major faults extend southward behind the Hiyoshi seamounts around 23°30'N. The rift develops to a full-graben stage at ∼ 23°N, where the width of the trough increases to 80 km. The trough is comprised of several faulted and tilted blocks of island-arc crust. Maximum subsidence occurs along a row of small grabens on the eastern margin of the trough. These grabens are separated by arc volcanoes, and their depths increase southward from 2500 m at 23°20'N to 4500 m at 22°N. The strike of each graben is north-northwest–south-southeast, which is close to the trend of the remnant West Mariana Ridge, but oblique to the active Mariana arc. Crustal extension becomes concentrated along the eastern margin of the trough as rifting progresses. The transition from rifting to sea floor spreading may occur at ∼ 22°N, where the width of the trough is ∼ 120 km. The possible spreading center lies along the southern extension of the grabens on the eastern margin. The period of back-arc rifting before spreading begins is estimated to be less than 3 million years. Heat flow is asymmetric in the rift. High heat flow was observed only in or close to the row of grabens along the eastern margin of the trough. The asymmetric pure shear extension model fits the observed heat flow distribution better than the simple shear extension model.  相似文献

The brightness distribution of diffuse soft X-rays in the pulse height range 0.15–0.3 keV (L-band) and 0.5–0.8 keV (M-band) are obtained over a quarter of the sky centered at the galactic anticenter with 1.5 m polypropylene window proportional counters on board a sounding rocket. In theL-band three enhanced regions are noticed on the map. They coincide with the northern and southern Hi holes and the inner part of the galactic radio Loop II.In the northern Hi hole theN H dependence of theL-band flux and the hardness ratioM/L can be fitted with a local hot plasma model with the absorption by a low velocity neutral hydrogen gas (|V|<25 km s–1) along the line of sight. The X-ray feature of Loop II is similar to that of Loop I. In the lowN H region (<3×1020 H atoms cm–2) theM/L value is lower than 0.3, whereas it varies in the range 0.1–0.4 at low latitudes (|b|<300). This fact seems to be interpreted in terms of a model that a number of hot plasma clouds contribute to X-ray emission.  相似文献

Relations between sea-surface temperature (T s) and heat flux at the sea surface (F) have been investigated using data from ocean observation buoys located off Shikoku in the Sea of Japan and in the East China Sea. Wavelet transformation decomposed F and T s to wavelet coefficients (WLC) in the period-time domain. Assuming one-dimensional heat transfer by eddy diffusion in the upper ocean, the phase difference (δθ) defined as the difference between the phase of the temporal change rate of T s, and the phase of F ranges statistically from 0 to +π/4 when F changes T s, and is around −π/2 when heat convergence in the sea (Av) forces T s. The δθ values are distributed from 0 to +π/4 at one-day and one-year periods at all buoys. WLC amplitude (WLCA) of F at periods from 16 to 32 day periods, which may be caused by the atmospheric ridge-trough systems, maintains energy longer than WLCA at periods from 2 to 16 days, which may be caused by monsoonal surges. At periods from 2 to 64 days, δθ values distribute from 0 to +π/4 or around −π/2 at each event, reflecting the surroundings of each ocean, i.e., Kuroshio recirculation in the off-Shikoku area, water-temperature front in the Sea of Japan, and water exchange in the continental shelf edge in the East China Sea. We demonstrate that the wavelet analysis can characterize the correspondence between irregular signals of F and T s in various time scales and locations. The dynamical structure of a two-dimensional (depth and axial directions) estuary is studied analytically. A set of governing equations describing the time-averaged velocity and salinity in the estuary is used, where all of the external parameters (depth, width, freshwater discharge and horizontal and vertical coefficients of eddy viscosity and eddy diffusivity) are assumed to be constant along the estuary.Two dynamical relations are taken into consideration in the theory. One of them is the dependence of the longitudinal scaleL d on the balance of longitudinal salt transport, and the other is the relation between the vertical stratification of salinity and the the Prandtl numberP r=Av/Kv, whereA v andK v denote the coeffcients of the vertical eddy viscosity and diffusivity, respectively. The two relations result in an extension of the parameter range in which the linear balance of momentum holds.A linear state of motion (LM-state) is defined as the state where the momentum balance is linear. The LM-state comprises the so-called vertically homogeneous and the so-called partially mixed state. Perturbation analysis is introduced and dynamical theory is developed in the LM-state. Since the LM-state covers a fairly wide regime with respect to the balance of salt transport, the state is subdivided into three stages: the diffusive, intermediate and advective stages. In the diffusive stage the upstream salt transport is mainly attributed to the horizontal diffusion, whereas in the advective stage it is attributed to advection caused by gravitational circulation. The salinity balance is also linear in the diffusive and intermediate stages, whereas the balance is nonlinear in the advective stage. The advective stage of the LM-state is regarded as a stage bordering the salt wedge state.The longitudinal distribution of depth-mean salinity is found to take an exponential form in the diffusive stage, a nearly linear form in the advective stage and an intermediate form between them in the intermediate stage.  相似文献

Seasonal variations of heat and salt balances are estimated in the Seto Inland Sea with the use of a numerical experiment.The surface effect is dominant with respect to the heat balance. In spring, however, the effect of the horizontal heat transport is the same as or greater than that of the surface heating (or cooling). Annual mean heat transport is 85 cal cm–2 day–1 (356 J cm–2 day–1) which is supplied from the open ocean and lost through the sea surface in the Inland Sea as a whole. Because of the shallow water depth, heat is supplied through the surface and carried out by the horizontal heat transport in Hiuchi- and Bingo-nada in the annual mean. The heat transport has the opposite sense to that in the whole Seto Inland Sea and annual mean transport is negative (–10 cal cm–2 day–1,i.e., –42 J cm–2 day–1).The salt balance is primarily controlled by the river discharge and the surface effect (precipitation) in June and July. In the other months, the effects of horizontal salt transport, of river inflow and of sea surface exchange (especially of the evaporation in autumn) are comparable to each other. In the Bungo Channel the river effect is relatively small. The Global Imager (GLI) aboard the Advanced Earth Observing Satellite-II (ADEOS-II) made global observations from 2 April 2003 to 24 October 2003. In cooperation with several institutes and scientists, we obtained quality controlled match-ups between GLI products and in-situ data, 116 for chlorophyll-a concentration (CHLA), 249 for normalized water-leaving radiance (nLw) at 443 nm, and 201 for aerosol optical thickness at 865 nm (Tau_865) and Angstrom exponent between 520 and 865 nm (Angstrom). We evaluated the GLI ocean color products and investigated the causes of errors using the match-ups. The median absolute percentage differences (MedPD) between GLI and in-situ data were 14.1–35.7% for nLws at 380–565 nm, 52.5–74.8% nLws at 625–680 nm, 47.6% for Tau_865, 46.2% for Angstrom, and 46.6% for CHLA, values that are comparable to the ocean-color products of other sensors. We found that some errors in GLI products are correlated with observational conditions; nLw values were underestimated when nLw at 680 nm was high, CHLA was underestimated in absorptive aerosol conditions, and Tau_865 was overestimated in sunglint regions. The error correlations indicate that we need to improve the retrievals of the optical properties of absorptive aerosols and seawater and sea surface reflection for further applications, including coastal monitoring and the combined use of products from multiple sensors.  相似文献
