Upwelling occurs on the coast of Java between June and October, forced by local alongshore winds associated with the southeasterly monsoon. This causes variations in phytoplankton community composition in the upwelling zone compared with the surrounding offshore area. Based on pigments analysis with subsequent calculations of group contributions to total chlorophyll a(Chl a) using CHEMTAX, we studied the distribution and composition of phytoplankton assemblages in the subsurface chlorophyll maximum along the south coast of Java and the influence of upwelling. Nineteen phytoplankton pigments were identified using high-performance liquid chromatography, and CHEMTAX analysis associated these to ten major phytoplankton groups. The phytoplankton community in the coastal area influenced by upwelling was characterized by high Chl a and fucoxanthin concentrations, indicating the dominance of diatoms. In contrast, in the offshore area, the Chl a and fucoxanthin concentrations declined to very low levels and the community was dominated by haptophytes represented by 19′-Hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin. Accordingly, microphytoplankton was found to be the major size class in the coastal area influenced by upwelling, while nanophytoplankton was most abundant in the offshore area. Low concentrations of other accessory pigments indicated less contribution from dinoflagellates, prasinophytes, chlorophytes and cryptophytes. Photo-pigment indices revealed that photosynthetic carotenoids(PSCs) were the largest component of the pigment pool, exceeding the proportion of Chl a, with the average PSCTP up to 0.62. These distribution trends can mainly be explained by phytoplankton adaption strategies to upwelling and subsurface conditions by changing species composition and adjusting the pigment pool.

In order to detect iron (Fe) stress in micro-sized (20–200 μm) diatoms in the Oyashio region, western subarctic Pacific during spring, immunological ferredoxin/flavodoxin assays were applied to samples collected from the surface layer in May 2005. Concomitantly, the community composition of the micro-sized phytoplankton and hydrographic conditions, including dissolved Fe and macronutrient concentrations, were also examined. Chlorophyll (Chl) a concentrations were <2 mg m−3 at all sampling stations, except at a station where the Chl a level was 9.0 mg m−3 and a micro-sized diatom bloom occurred. A high abundance of ferredoxin in micro-sized diatoms was detected only at a rather near-shore station where dissolved Fe and macronutrient concentrations were higher, indicating that the micro-sized diatoms did not suffer from iron deficiency. On the other hand, flavodoxin in micro-sized diatoms was often observed at the other stations, including the bloom station, where macronutrients were replete but dissolved Fe concentration was low (0.31 nM). A significant amount of chlorophyllide a, a degradation product of Chl a, was also observed at the bloom station, suggesting a decline of the diatom bloom. The micro-sized phytoplankton species at all the stations were mainly composed of the diatoms Thalassiosira, Chaetoceros, and Fragilariopsis spp. Our study indicates that micro-sized diatoms were stressed by Fe bioavailability during the spring season in the Oyashio region

The distribution of chlorophyll a(Chl a) and its relationships with physical and chemical parameters in different regions of the Bering Sea were discussed in July 2010. The results showed the seawater column Chl a concentrations were 13.41–553.89 mg/m2 and the average value was 118.15 mg/m2 in the study areas. The horizontal distribution of Chl a varied remarkably from basin to shelf in the Bering Sea. The regional order of Chl a concentrations from low to high was basin, slope, outer shelf, inner shelf, and middle shelf. The vertical distribution of Chl a was grouped mainly from single-peak type in basin, slope, outer shelf, and middle shelf, where the deep Chl a maxima(DCM) layer was observed at 25–50 m, 30–35 m, 36–44 m, and 37–47 m, respectively. The vertical distribution of Chl a mainly had three basic patterns: standard single-peak type, surface maximum type, and bottom maximum type in the inner shelf. The analysis also showed that the transportation of ocean currents may control the distribution of Chl a, and the effects were not simple in the basin of the Bering Sea. There was a positive correlation between Chl a and temperature, but no significant correlation between Chl a and nutrients. The Bering Sea slope was an area deeply influenced by slope current. Silicate was the factor that controlled the distribution of Chl a within parts of the water in the slope. Light intensity was an important environmental factor in controlling seawater column Chl a in the shelf, where Chl a was limited by nitrate rather than phosphate within the upper water. Meanwhile, there was a positive relationship between Chl a and salinity. Algal blooms broke out at Sta. B6 of the southwestern St. Lawrence Island and Stas F6 and F11 in the middle of the Bering Strait.

In the upper Schelde estuary in 2002, phytoplankton biomass and community composition were studied using microscopic and pigment analyses. Chlorophyll a concentration was a good predictor of phytoplankton biomass estimated from cell counts and biovolume measurements. The phytoplankton carbon to chlorophyll a ratio, however, was often unrealistically low (<10). CHEMTAX was used to estimate the contribution of the major algal groups to total chlorophyll a. The dominant algal groups were diatoms and chlorophytes. While diatom equivalents in chlorophyll a predicted diatom biomass relatively well, chlorophyte equivalents in chlorophyll a were only weakly related to chlorophyte biomass. The pigment-based approach to study phytoplankton overestimated phytoplankton biomass in general and chlorophyte biomass in particular in late autumn and winter, when phytoplankton biomass was low. A possible explanation for this overestimation may be the presence of large amounts of vascular plant detritus in the upper Schelde estuary. Residual chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and lutein in this detritus may result in an overestimation of total phytoplankton and chlorophyte biomass when the contribution of phytoplankton to total particulate organic matter is low.

Using the seawater dilution technique, we measured phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing rates within and outside of the 1999 Bering Sea coccolithophorid bloom. We found that reduced microzooplankton grazing mortality is a key component in the formation and temporal persistence of the Emiliania huxleyi bloom that continues to proliferate in the southeast Bering Sea. Total chlorophyll a (Chl a) at the study sites ranged from 0.40 to 4.45 μg C l−1. Highest phytoplankton biomass was found within the bloom, which was a mixed assemblage of diatoms and E. huxleyi. Here, 75% of the Chl a came from cells >10 μm and was attributed primarily to the high abundance of the diatom Nitzschia spp. Nutrient-enhanced total phytoplankton growth rates averaged 0.53 d−1 across all experimental stations. Average growth rates for >10 μm and <10 μm cells were nearly equal, while microzooplankton grazing varied among stations and size fractions. Grazing on phytoplankton cells >10 μm ranged from 0.19 to 1.14 d−1. Grazing on cells <10 μm ranged from 0.02 to 1.07 d−1, and was significantly higher at non-bloom (avg. 0.71 d−1) than at bloom (avg. 0.14 d−1) stations. Averaged across all stations, grazing by microzooplankton accounted for 110% and 81% of phytoplankton growth for >10 and <10 μm cells, respectively. These findings contradict the paradigm that microzooplankton are constrained to diets of nanophytoplankton and strongly suggests that their grazing capability extends beyond boundaries assumed by size-based models. Dinoflagellates and oligotrich ciliates dominated the microzooplankton community. Estimates of abundance and biomass for microzooplankton >10 μm were higher than previously reported for the region, ranging from 22,000 to 227,430 cells l−1 and 18 to 164 μg C l−1. Highest abundance and biomass occurred in the bloom and corresponded with increased abundance of the large ciliate Laboea, and the heterotrophic dinoflagellates Protoperidinium and Gyrodinium spp. Despite low grazing rates on phytoplankton <10 μm within the bloom, the abundance and biomass of small microzooplankton (<20 μm) capable of grazing E. huxleyi was relatively high at bloom stations. This body of evidence, coupled with observed high grazing rates on large phytoplankton cells, suggests the phytoplankton community composition was strongly regulated by herbivorous activity of microzooplankton. Because grazing behavior deviated from size-based model predictions and was not proportional to microzooplankton biomass, alternate mechanisms that dictate levels of grazing activity were in effect in the southeastern Bering Sea. We hypothesize that these mechanisms included morphological or chemical signaling between phytoplankton and micrograzers, which led to selective grazing pressure.

Surface water transects and vertical profiles for dissolved iron, macronutrients, chlorophyll a (Chl a), and hydrographic data were obtained in the Peru upwelling regime during August and September 2000. The supply of the micronutrient iron, relative to that of the macronutrients nitrate, phosphate and silicic acid, is shown to play a critical role in allowing extensive diatom blooms to develop in the Peru upwelling system. The extremely high-chlorophyll “brown waters of Peru” (with Chl a concentrations between 20 and 45 μg/l) result from massive diatom blooms with maximal photochemical efficiencies (Fv/Fm >0.6) occurring in the iron-rich upwelling region observed over the broad continental shelf off northern and central Peru. The source of the upwelled water in this region is the nutrient-rich subsurface countercurrent in contact with the organic-rich shelf sediments. This subsurface shelf water is suboxic and has extremely high concentrations of dissolved Fe (>50 nM) in the near-bottom waters. In marked contrast, relatively low-chlorophyll “blue waters” (Chl a <2 μg/l) with low concentrations of dissolved Fe (<0.1 nM) and high unutilized macronutrient concentrations are observed in the coastal upwelled waters along the southern coast of Peru and in the offshore regions of the Peru Current. Southern Peru is a region without a wide shelf to serve as a source of iron and, as a result, dissolved Fe concentrations in the near-bottom suboxic waters of this region are an order-of-magnitude lower than observed off northern and central Peru. In addition, the offshore Peru Current is a broad, Fe-limited, high-nitrate, lower than expected chlorophyll region extending hundreds of kilometers offshore into the northeast region of the South Pacific subtropical gyre and northwestward into the South Equatorial Pacific.

Phytoplankton is a key component in the functioning of marine ecosystems, phytoplankton community structures are very sensitive to their environment. This study was conducted in the central Bohai Sea in the spring and early summer of 2015. Spatial variations in phytoplankton functional groups were examined through high-performance liquid chromatography pigment–CHEMTAX analysis. Results suggested that the phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a [Chl a]) in spring was mainly derived from the diatom community and was 3.5-fold higher than that in the summer. Meanwhile, the phytoplankton in the early summer sustained more diverse marker pigments than that in the spring. Despite the overwhelming predominance of microsized phytoplankton in the spring, some smaller phytoplankton (pico- or nanosized), including flagellates, such as prasinophytes, chlorophytes, and cryptophytes, highly contributed to the total Chl a in the summer. Various physico-chemical variables were recorded, and their correlations with phytoplankton density were established by redundancy analysis. Temperature, water stratification, nutrient availability, and even nutritive proportion influenced the succession of phytoplankton functional groups from diatom dominance in the spring to flagellate (mainly haptophytes and prasinophytes) dominance in the early summer. In conclusion, our work comprehensively evaluated the phytoplankton diversity and dynamics in the central Bohai Sea and suggests the need for long-term monitoring for further investigation.

A mesoscale iron-enrichment study (SEEDS II) was carried out in the western subarctic Pacific in the summer of 2004. The iron patch was traced for 26 days, which included observations of the development and the decline of the bloom by mapping with sulfur hexafluoride. The experiment was conducted at almost the same location and the same season as SEEDS (previous iron-enrichment experiment). However, the results were very different between SEEDS and SEEDS II. A high accumulation of phytoplankton biomass (∼18 mg chl m−3) was characteristic of SEEDS. In contrast, in SEEDS II, the surface chlorophyll-a accumulation was lower, 0.8 to 2.48 mg m−3, with no prominent diatom bloom. Photosynthetic competence in terms of F v/F m for the total phytoplankton community in the surface waters increased after the iron enrichments and returned to the ambient level by day 20. These results suggest that the photosynthetic physiology of the phytoplankton assemblage was improved by the iron enrichments and returned to an iron-stressed condition during the declining phase of the bloom. Pico-phytoplankton (<2 μm) became dominant in the chlorophyll-a size distribution after the bloom. We observed a nitrate drawdown of 3.8 μM in the patch (day 21), but there was no difference in silicic acid concentration between inside and outside the patch. Mesozooplankton (copepod) biomass was three to five times higher during the bloom-development phase in SEEDS II than in SEEDS. The copepod biomass increased exponentially. The grazing rate estimation indicates that the copepod grazing prevented the formation of an extensive diatom bloom, which was observed in SEEDS, and led to the change to a pico-phytoplankton dominated community towards the end of the experiment.

Sediment cores were collected from the shelf, slope, and basin of the Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort Seas during May–June (under ice cover) and July–August (largely ice-free) 2004. Measurements of chlorophyll a (chl a), total organic carbon (TOC), and C/N ratios were made in surface and some subsurface core increments. Surface sediment chl a decreased with increasing water depth. Significant positive correlations were found between chl a and TOC and chl a and C/N ratios in the basin (>2000 m), but there were significant negative correlations between chl a and C/N ratios on the shelf (⩽200 m). Chl a values generally declined in down-core profiles, but in some deeper slope and basin cores, measurable inventories of subsurface chl a were present at depth. In some cases, these subsurface chlorophyll inventories coincident with peak activities of the anthropogenic radionuclide 137Cs were detected, which had maximal deposition following the atmospheric nuclear weapons testing era in the 1960s. A sedimentation rate independently determined for one of these cores using 210Pb was consistent with the depths of subsurface 137Cs peaks in slope sediments reflecting steady, relatively undisturbed deposition over a several-decade period. The depth of penetration of 137Cs in some continental slope sediments, together with detectable chl a, suggests that chl a can be buried in some of these deeper-water sediments under cold conditions for decadal periods in the absence of deposit feeders. Because organic deposition from the water column is episodic at high latitudes and concentrated following the spring bloom, these buried sources of organic materials, whether on the shelf or in deeper basin sediments, may ultimately be important for benthic invertebrates that could utilize this food source during times of the year when primary production flux from the overlying water column is reduced.

Vertical distributions of phytoplankton biomass and community structure were studied in the summer stratified central Yellow Sea (YS) using a submersible spectrofluorometer (Fluoroprobe, bbe Moldaenke, Germany), along with photosynthetic pigments analysis (HPLC-CHEMTAX), and microscope observation. Above all, the results of the dominating group obtained from these methods generally coincided with each other on the transect 35°N. The concentrations of brown algae, green algae and total chlorophyll a (Chl a) biomass were highly correlated between the results of Fluoroprobe observations and pigments analysis (r?=?0.79, 0.91 and 0.82, respectively, n?=?54, p?<?0.01). In the summer stratified central YS, significant differences in phytoplankton compositions on the vertical distribution was observed. On the basis of HPLC-CHEMTAX results, the dominating group of phytoplankton composition generally changed from cyanobacteria to chrysophytes and then to diatoms, from surface to bottom. Interestingly, on the basis of high-resolution observations using Fluoroprobe, a periodic fluctuation of the pycnocline presumably due to the semidiurnal internal tides was observed at an anchor station (35°N, 123°E). In addition, both nutrients and Chl a concentrations at the depth of the subsurface chlorophyll maximum (SCM) seemed to coincide with the rhythm of the pycnocline fluctuation, indicating the latter might have a potential impact on the dynamics of SCM phenomena in the summer stratified central YS.

We characterized the community composition of phytoplankton in the western subarctic Pacific from the pre-bloom to the decline phase of the spring bloom with special reference to decreases in the silicic acid concentration in surface waters as an index for diatom bloom development. Furthermore, responses of heterotrophic bacteria and viruses to the spring bloom were also concomitantly investigated. Under pre-bloom conditions when nutrients were abundant but the surface mixed layer depth was relatively deep, chlorophyll (Chl) a concentrations were consistently low and green algae (chlorophytes and prasinophytes), cryptophytes, and diatoms were predominant in the phytoplankton assemblages as estimated by algal pigment signatures. Together with the shallowing of the mixed layer depth and the decrease in silicic acid concentration, diatoms bloomed remarkably in the Oyashio region, though the magnitude of the bloom in the Kuroshio-Oyashio transition (hereafter Transition) region was relatively small. A total of 77 diatom species were identified, with the bloom-forming diatoms mainly consisting of Thalassiosira, Chaetoceros, and Fragilariopsis species. It has become evident that the carotenoid fucoxanthin can serve as a strong indicator of the diatom carbon biomass during the spring diatom bloom. Differences in the species richness of diatoms among stations generally enabled us to separate the Oyashio bloom stations from the Transition and the Oyashio pre-bloom stations. Relatively high values of the Shannon-Wiener index for the diatom species were also maintained during the Oyashio bloom, indicating that a wide variety of species then shared dominance. In the decline phase of the Oyashio bloom when surface nutrient concentrations decreased, senescent diatom cells increased, as inferred from the levels of chlorophyllide a. Although the cell density of heterotrophic bacteria changed little with the development of the diatom bloom, viral abundance increased toward the end of the bloom, suggesting an increased likelihood of mortality among organisms including diatoms resulting from viral infection. This is the first report on the microbial trophodynamics, including viruses, during the spring diatom bloom in the western subarctic Pacific.

The spatial variations of phytoplankton community structure in the Xiamen Western Bay during the summer and autumn cruises in 2001 were investigated based on HPLC analysis of photosynthetic pigments in algal cells and CHEMTAX processing of pigment data. The Chl a concentration reached 18.9 μg/L in the summer and declined to 0.28-2.17 in the autumn, respectively, consistent with the observation of diatom blooms in June.Among the accessory pigments, fucoxanthin was consistently the most abundant, ranging from 0.172 to 8.46 μg/L,with the maximum concentrations in June.19'-hexfucoxanthin and alloxanthin were the other two abundant pigments in the summer and autumn. In addition,19'-butanoyloxyfucoxanthin or peridinin was also important in late autumn.Generally the biomass of all the phytoplankton or each group was higher in the inner part than the mouth of this bay, represented by Chl a.CHEMTAX processing revealed the dominance of diatoms with their contribution of 14.6%-52.5% to the total Chl a,but its importance decreased in the autumn.Cryptophytes and Haptophytes, with an average contribution of 16.9%-31.4% and 12.1%-26.3%,were the other two important groups, especially in the autumn. On the contrary,Dinoflagellates and Chlorophytes were the minor groups, but the former became important sporadically in the autumn. It was suggested that there was distinctive variation in both the phytoplankton community structure and biomass between summer and autumn in the Xiamen Western Bay and the latter was coupled to the changes in temperature and dissolved oxygen. However, the spatial variation of the phytoplankton community structure was not as clear as the trend in the biomass of phytoplankton among all the sites in this bay.

The aim of this study was to investigate controls on the phytoplankton community composition and biogeochemistry of the estuarine plume zone of the River Thames, U.K. using an instrumented moored buoy for in situ measurements and preserved sample collection, and laboratory-based measurements from samples collected at the same site. Instrumentation on the moored buoy enabled high frequency measurements of a suite of environmental variables including in situ chlorophyll, water-column integrated irradiance, macronutrients throughout an annual cycle for 2001 e.g. nitrate and silicate, and phytoplankton biomass and species composition. The Thames plume region acts as a conduit for fluvial nutrients into the wider southern North Sea with typical winter concentrations of 45 μM nitrate, 17 μM silicate and 2 μM phosphate measured. The spring bloom resulted from water-column integrated irradiance increasing above 60 W h m 2 d 1 and was initially dominated by a diatom bloom mainly composed of Nitzschia sp. and Odontella sinesis. The spring bloom then switched after ∼ 30 days to become dominated by the flagellate Phaeocystis reaching a maximum chlorophyll concentration of 37.8 μg L 1. During the spring bloom there were high numbers of the heterotrophic dinoflagellates Gyrodinium spirale and Katodinium glaucum that potentially grazed the phytoplankton bloom. This diatom–flagellate switch was predicted to be due to a combination of further increasing water-column integrated irradiance > 100 W h m 2 d 1 and/or silicate reaching potentially limiting concentrations (< 1 μM). Post spring bloom, diatom dominance of the lower continuous summer phytoplankton biomass occurred despite the low silicate concentrations (Av. 0.7 μM from June–August). Summer diatom dominance, generally due to Guinardia delicatula, was expected to be as a result of microzooplankton grazing, dominated by the heterotrophic dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans, controlling 0.7–5.0 μm ‘flagellate’ fraction of the phytoplankton community with grazing rates up to 178% of ‘flagellate’ growth rate. The Thames plume region was therefore shown to be an active region of nutrient and phytoplankton processing and transport to the southern North Sea. The use of a combination of moorings and ship-based sampling was essential in understanding the factors influencing nutrient transport, phytoplankton biomass and species composition in this shelf sea plume region.

Microphytobenthic biomass was estimated in the Bay of Brest (1994) and the western English Channel (Trezen Vraz, 1993) using spectrophotometry. Best results (42 % difference) were obtained with an instantaneous extraction procedure at room temperature, compared with the cold extraction procedure. Chlorophyll biomass in sediment was higher in the western English Channel (65–215 mg Chl a m−2) than in the Bay of Brest (10–113 mg Chl a m−2), in contrast to total pigment biomass (Chl a + pheo a : 88–254 mg m−2 at Trezen Vraz vs. 131–934 mg m−2 in the Bay of Brest). This study emphasized decreasing pigment biomass from the estuary to the open sea. Low benthic pigment biomass in the Bay, compared to eutrophic ecosystems, agrees with previous studies on the pelagic system, suggesting that there is no eutrophication in the Bay of Brest. Microphytobenthic blooms were strongly correlated with environmental factors, such as river floods, light intensity, water temperature and the spring/neap tidal cycle. Turbidity and light could be limiting factors at Roscanvel, i.e. the deepest site facing gyre circulation. The latter would favour sedimentation of silt particles at the sediment-water interface. Microphytobenthos population dynamics would be also dependent on the spring/neap tidal cycle, since maximum chlorophyll biomass occurred at neap tides at all three sites in the Bay of Brest, in contrast to the western English Channel. Lower temporal variations of pigment biomass in sediment were observed in the Channel, compared with the Bay of Brest; maximum chlorophyll biomass in sediment was found to occur three to four weeks after the phytoplankton blooms.

Six research cruises were conducted off the west coast of Vancouver Island between April and October of 1997 and 1998 as part of the Canadian GLOBEC project to compare nutrient and phytoplankton dynamics between ENSO (1997) and non-ENSO (1998) years. Limited sampling also was conducted during three cruises in 1999. During the 1997 ENSO period, there was a shallow thermocline (∼10 m) that resulted in a shallower mixed layer, lower salinity and density, and stronger summer stratification. In general on the shelf, the 1997 growing season was characterized by higher nitrate (7.5 μM) and silicic acid (17 μM) concentrations, lower total chlorophyll (∼76 mg m−2), lower phytoplankton carbon biomass (0.2 mg C L−1), and lower diatom abundance and biomass than in 1998. Phytoplankton assemblages were dominated by nanoplankton in 1997 and by diatoms in 1998. These results suggest that the 1997 ENSO was responsible for a reduction in the growth and biomass of larger phytoplankton cells. In mid-1998, the hydrographic characteristics off the west coast of Vancouver Island changed suddenly. The 1997 poleward transport of warm water reversed to an equatorward transport of coastal water in July 1998, which was accompanied by normal summer upwelling. During 1998, a large diatom bloom (mainly dominated by Chaetoceros debilis, Leptocylindrus danicus and to a lesser extent by Skeletomema and Pseudo-nitzschia sp.) was observed in July over the continental shelf. This large bloom resulted in chlorophyll concentrations of up to 400 mg m−2, primary productivity of up to 11 g C m−2 d−1, and near undetectable dissolved nitrogen concentrations at some of the shelf stations in 1998. In contrast, during 1997, the sub-tropical waters that were advected over the slope, resulted in low chlorophyll a and primary productivity (generally <1 g C m−2 d−1). Therefore, there was a sharp contrast between the very high primary productivity on the shelf in July 1998, due to normal nutrient replenishment from summer upwelling and outflow from the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and the lower primary productivity during the 1997 ENSO year. During 1998, non-ENSO conditions resulted in phytoplankton biomass that was twice as high on the shelf as that measured in regions beyond the continental shelf of the west coast of Vancouver Island.

During most of the vegetation season from late May to early September, the large-sized diatom alga Proboscia alata forms local patches with high abundances and biomasses in different oceanographic domains of the eastern Bering Sea shelf. The average abundance and biomass of the species in these patches amounts to 0.7 × 106 cells/l and 5 g WW/m3, respectively, for the layer of 0–25 m, while the corresponding estimates for the layer of the maximal species concentrations are 4.0 × 106 cells/l and 38 g WW/m3 (1.6 g C/m3). These levels of abundance and biomass are typical of the spring diatom bloom in the region. The outbursts of P. alata mass development are an important element of carbon cycling in the pelagic zone of the shelf area in the summer season. The paradox of the P. alata summertime blooms over the middle shelf lies in their occurrences against the background of the sharp seasonal pycnocline and the deficiency in nutrients in the upper mixed layer. The duration of the outbursts in the P. alata development is about two weeks and the size of the patches with high abundances can be as large as 200 km across. Degradation of the P. alata summertime outbursts may occur during 4–5 days. The rapid sinking of the cells through the seasonal pycnocline results in an intense transport of organic matter to the bottom sediments. One of the possible factors responsible for the rapid degradation of the blooms is the affect on the population by ectoparasitic flagellates. At the terminal stages of the P. alata blooms, the share of infected cells may reach 70–99%.
